    Valve, worked with HORIPAD for the new Steam controller (available in Japan later this summer), and worked with HORI's team to make their controller work well with Steam Input.

      I find the only thing I can’t live without is gyro. If you’re creative enough with steam input, you can do basically anything the pads can do with the sticks. I use the switch pro controller and dualsense that way. Gyro and stick are enough to take me to mouse and keyboard level, so I’m personally super excited for this controller despite its lack of rumble. 🎉

    Fortunately I've never had a problem with using controllers wired, so the PS5 controller has been excellent in games that support it. Even better in Yuzu for TOTK motion aiming, seemed more accurate than the Joycons though that may have just been due to 60fps.
    Just one stupid glitch with that is it drains the battery for some reason when left plugged into a PC that is turned off, even when the USB port is still supplying power. But I have a controller dedicated to PC use so its not a big deal, just annoying if you try to move it back to PS5 and the battery is dead.

    Ignoring the steam deck is always a dumb idea.
    And yeah, the steam box seems likely, imho, but this controller has fuggall to do with it.

    • @alexatkin
      @alexatkin 3 месяца назад +1

      I don't think Valve will bother with it though, it will be third-parties using SteamOS, if they ever get round to officially releasing it for other hardware as promised.

    I personally think they really should just take a steam deck and remove the screen and maybe put a more tactile dpad on it. Something more like the Vita had.
    They need to keep those dual trackpads to keep games not designed around controllers playable. I have gotten used to the trackpad keyboard typing.
    That would be my favourite controller if they could do that.

      Yeah good gyro is essential for fps games. I had difficulties with my PS4 controller not being precise enough, which were fixed when I got a 8bitdo controller which had amazing gyro.

    The fact that Hori is teaming up with Valve would lead me to believe that Steam is picking us some steam in Japan pun intended. Then again whether it's actually Steam or Hori making it doesn't really matter. A Steam console would be absolutely amazing to have also if it was on par or slightly better than a PS5/Xbox Series X that would be very cool. Not sure why they wouldn't just make their own controller but at least it natively supports Steam input.

    • @HaplessIdiot
      @HaplessIdiot 3 месяца назад

      Still hori isn't the company they used to be they are why PS5 fight sticks are 500$ mandatory for sf6 and all their gamepads lack any protection from stickdrift they refuse to use hall effect sensors. this is worse than a madcats partnership hyperkin 8bitdo guilikit and elecgear already make better "steam" controllers

      According to KADOKAWA ASCII research, the Japanese PC gaming market has been growing massively in the past few years alone. So yeah, PC gaming is very much on the rise in Japan and no longer just a niche.
      I'm excited to see what effect Handheld PC's have on Japan. I hope we start to see smaller, more pocketable handheld PC's (like the GPD Win Mini clamshell handheld), specifically designed for the Japanese/Asian market.

    Playing Dragon Age 2 on Deck right now with a controller layout that uses the trackpads is perfect, however there is no way to play it like that docked since there are no controllers with trackpads (unless I shell out ungodly amounts of cash for a used OG Steam controller). We would all benefit from a controller like this that had some track pads, back buttons, and gyro.

    Analysis makes sense, I was wondering what this potentially could mean, and you are right all the other explanations don't really hold water. Shore-ing up controller support in Japan, when overall controller use is on the rise, is just a good thing to do for steam as a whole.

    hori is definitely upper eschelon of third party manufacturing for consoles enough to secure many deals with Nintendo and Sony themselves. They make for the price that is not over 200€ excellent fight sticks, that are also licensed that is big for the current PS5 compatibility. They made one of the highest regarded N64 controllers fixing it to be usable for most that is now being cloned by retro figthers or some such. They are not Mad Catz for sure though ironically one could say historically Mad Catz made better arcade sticks than hori does these days. I have not tested personally any Hori product that made me feel like mad catz and other actually low grade products. Worst I can say for their cheap products is that they are still best product for the price, but the price does show.

That aside, I'm happy to see Valve and Hori take a stab with these new Steam Controllers. I just hope that the system buttons are NOT rubber. Hori has a bad habit of using rubber menu buttons on their controllers 🤦🏾‍♂️.

      Astro is their console peripheral company, so I think if it were coming from Logitech, it would have an Astro badge on it.
      I wouldn’t count out 8-bitdo either. They’ve got a strong relationship with Xbox, making licensed controllers and accessories from them. We might get a different company to make a “steam” controller for the western markets.

    Handheld PCs, specifically cheaper ones from China were always being manufactured and sold. They just got more popular after the Steam Deck.
    That new controller shown off looks alright, no gyro, rumble or a trackpad is a shame but I guess it’s just a comfortable quality controller.
    PC gaming from what I can tell has been less popular in Japan than it has in the west and as you mentioned Xbox is not a very popular option for console gaming there. This partnership with Hori means that the Steam platform and PC gaming as a whole might be starting to pick up a bit over there.
