Man, that Ghost town was surreal, thanks for showing the area and talking about it. It was kinda melancholy to think about a whole community living and working where you were standing but now it's chipmunks and squirrels for Lando to chase.

Carol, I could feel your Mama's heart, recalling seeing Caroline off for her mission, and as a Mama whose for kids all have families by now, I can tell you, it will not get easier with the others. Each is a distinct personality with presence and Spirit, so you will feel that intense missing for each. You are grateful for the time you have been given. She will be back, and in between, there's lots to inspire your days! The ghost town! It looked like a scene in a horror movie! How interesting, and I'm glad you guys did it for us, because I don't think I'm going there! Be blessed!

When I did my trip last year up to the Taiga I went up to Chibougamau and took the Route De Nord (North Route) this Chibougamau is known as the gateway to the Quebec north and the Route De Nord is a 407 kilometer very remote stretch of dirt road to a very friendly Native village of Nemiscau , I believe it is called . Very friendly people in this community , with a grocery store and gas station . The Route De Nord links up with the Billy Diamond Highway (James BayHighway) and from there North to Radisson and then back down to the Taiga road ,then come back and go east to the James Bay Highway and to Chisasibi (another little Native community)and the shore of James Bay or visa versa . The year before I did part of the Taiga only going to Sakami River 60 kilometres up the Trans Taiga . You have to fish the Sakami it is a fantastic walleye (pickerel) river , when you go to catch supper , you will catch supper , no question . So yeah 2 years ago I started at the beginning of the James Bay Highway at Matagami all along either way there is plenty of wild camping . ENJOY !!👍

I really felt for you Carol watching our girls- young women begin their path, venturing out on their own… we feel proud of whom they’re becoming and want them to safely fly exploring life for themselves but boy do we miss their presence… so from one Mum to another a big loving and understanding hug 🤗 🥰is sent to you! Kia Kaha (stay strong) and love that you’re picking up her duties on the road. That ghost town is kinda surreal to think that there was a thriving gold town with families making a life and now a few decades later there isn’t anyone there just over grown roads and side walks. It’s a reminder how we need to treat our natural resources.

I guess you camped in what used to be Joutel on your way to Matagami. Wow what a change from what I remember. Now in my sixties, I worked underground there as a miner in 78. The money was very good for those times. Most men lived in bunkhouses but there was a small village with gaz, a bank and small grocery store etc. Lucky for you , you went through early in the season because they used to say that in Joutel mosquitoes were so agressive and big that even dogs refused to go outside hi hi hi. Hope you have a good safe trip and thanks for bringing back memories.

Hello, I wish I had known you would be in in my area! If you come back the same way, you should camp one night in Silver Centre. It was a very large mining town in the early 1900’s and there are remnants of the foundations of some of the buildings and mining shafts are still visible. The road also runs beside the Montreal river, truly beautiful! Safe adventures in Quebec, Happy Birthday Dan 🎂

I should have mentioned to you folks that gas at Kenogami Kitchen in Kenogami, Ontario on highway 11 has the best premium ethanol free gasoline for the price. The western sandwich is also awesome. Happy birthday Dan!
Hmm egg salad without a fridge, I guess it's not like you're in the desert southwest and it's hitting 90ºf where it will be ripe within a day. I'm sure Caroline will do great and things change that's just how life is, now that I'm retired I get to travel a lot more than in the past so I'm entering a new phase of my life. Safe travels !

I've had fish & chips all over the US and the UK but the very best I've ever had was at an open air sea side restaurant on the USVI island of St. John. Amazing! Then one's we had in Cambridge England were the most disappointing. The best in England were always from little roadside take away shops.
Carol, as I watch this, I am sad for you because as a mom, I know what it is like to watch a daughter launch into the world. Caroline is well-equipped to succeed because of her supportive parents and family as well as her faith. Gradually, you will find your new normal, but it will take time. God bless you as you go through this.
In reference to your new sleeping arrangements I thought id share. I exclusively sleep in the back of my Jeep when camping. I’m not a fan of inflatable’s, not sure how you guys feel about them. What I have found for max comfort is a thinner 2 or 3 inch inflatable camping pad with a Hest mattress on top. The Hest isn’t the most compact thing nor is it very easy to roll up but it’s very comfortable, you may be able to keep it up top unrolled and then just pull,it down?? I do this because I’m a bigger guy 6’3 2much and find most pads and mattresses uncomfortable and wake up often with stiff back etc. and I’ve tried a bunch. Anyway, safe travels.
