I super duper love this video. Was curious about laws so that's awesome you said you're actually within city code. Finding it really interesting to see about people who do various homestead, off-grid, alternative housing, permaculture, etc., situations. Was fun visiting Kailash EcoVillage here in Portland too recently with a friend and we wanted to visit tiny home communities too (even the tiny home hotel!) but they weren't currently offering tours. There are folks who do off-grid homesteading even in snow and with big families or families that live on buses, etc. This stuff is only gonna keep getting more popular. Thanks for being creative and deep and brave enough to try new ways! That San Diego weather is easier than say snow for your set-up. Reminds me of how some folks live in Hawaii apparently.

If everyone were to move to this way of life, wouldn't you agree that the entire economy, technology, society would completely collapse into chaos and anarchy?
I definitely don't think that everyone on Earth should do this. Nor do I think there is much of anything that everyone should do. We should keep diversity in existence and live in a manner that coexists with the local environment of where we live.
+Rob Greenfield I certainly wish I was able to move to a similar way of life with my girlfriend and her 5 year old son, but that would take some major life sacrifices. Keep up the good work my friend!
Don't worry. There will always be tons of people Buying Massive homes and lots of material things to keep the economy going. Most people aren't willing to live this kinda life, but it makes it all the more enjoyable for the people who do.
+Alex Black It's not about going backwards but looking at ways of moving forward. I don't think this is the lifestyle for everyone but if more people considered lower impact lifestyles then we could all enjoy a better quality of life.
belverkungol I agree we should strive toward progres, but I think we can go forward only through implementaion of new scientific discoveries in every day life. Even now human mindset is on much higher level, when it comes to ecology and enviroment preservation (at least in the west), considering how things were just a few decades ago. Middle age way of living is superseded for a reason. My biggest objection is that its very unsanitary, hes surounded with patogens, and someone with weakened immune system would quickly become very sick in such enviroment.
I almost wish I lived in a warmer climate so I could live more outside! But I love the PNW. My boyfriend and I live in a renovated school bus in Washington. It's about 240sq feet of pure love. We are trying to go local with our food and possibly eventually get off grid. Your lifestyle is such an inspiration! Channels like yours gave me the courage to live my bus dream and find a partner with the same level of consciousness. We both work regular jobs but save so much money living simply. (As flawed as the system is, we want to be able to have our own piece of land someday and travel.)
"How do I not have a bill in my name but have a sweet spot like this?" lol because someone else is paying the payment and tax on the property! 99.9% of us don't know someone who would let them live in their backyard, nor would we mooch off of someone if we did. Besides being illegal, it makes for an overcrowded living environment if everyone had people living in "tiny houses" in the backyard of all the properties. San Diego is already ridiculously overcrowded with rental properties being packed in like sardines, and parking LOL good luck! I have to kick people off the street living in front of my house in their RV's constantly. Because they don't want to work full time and pay for a place to live like the rest of us. Ya great thing you're doing here. You think you are teaching people how to live "free" and "debt free" and "off the grid", well go do it in the mountains on your OWN property that you bought.
***** You don't see the point? "So what?" Go buy a property in Point Loma, then have your neighbors start letting people live in sheds and trailers around you. Now paying that nice big mortgage payment for a house in a beautiful area doesn't seem worth it anymore when the area begins to look like Tijuana. The point is simple, there is a reason this is illegal! Yes this is one person at the moment, but making videos about it and promoting the "lifestyle" will only bring down the value of the area that the rest of us are paying for, if all the houses started letting a bunch of people live in the back yard. If you want to live in a trailer in someones backyard then go do it where it's ALLOWED, which is very few places, maybe rural Tennessee. Your comment has nothing to do with what i said.
You shouldn't force anyone to do anything. As a family every person is equal and you should have conversations before making changes so that everyone can enjoy life and be comfortable.
In the U.S if you dont have health insurance you have to pay a penilty during tax time. If you dont pay it, you will be charged interested on it compounded daily. :(

army and disasters will tear up the cities after riot from people being hungry. the money system is closing down completely.we must find our way away from it
So the guy let's you occupy square footage on his land that he has to pay tax on while you make a video saying you're living for free?? Hmm, the property owner is one hell of a nice guy or an idiot.
Cool idea. Only downside is every time I see it done it's relying on someone else's backyard. So it's very foundation is relying on someone else, not self-reliance.
So basically, you're freeloading on somebody's mortgage payment and property tax and in exchange, you're throwing in a shitload of zoning violations? Only one step up from living in a cardboard box in an alley.
+lt34102 while i agree with you i dont, but only because he's doing improvements to the owners property, hes just trading labor for rent instead of cash i can tell you right now what the landscaping he has done would cost the owner to do and maintain 400$ for the cleanup and 100$ a week for maintenance of the gardens and grounds, for rain collection the owner would probably pay close to 2500$ ect ect ect hes not getting anything for free hes just doing barter instead of money, and honestly? the gov hates that because its fair and the gov doesent get its cut.
I am so glad to be receiving updates finally. How is your relationship with the land owner? Is he pleased with the work you are doing in his yard? How did it come about that the neighbour was generous enough to let you harvest his rain water as well?
lost in the tundra Hey man! All is well with the land owner. I think he is really pleased, especially with the fence. That thing was a lot of work and something he'd wanted for a while. He's also the one who I set the rainwater harvesting system on and he's stoked because it'll be all his when I leave here. Plus he's just into this sort of stuff too.
I think the composting toilet is a real major technological development. I hope that Joe Jenkins gets recognized for his work with it. Please do yearly or so updates on how well your toilet system works. If all your changes, the composting toilet is the one that can do an amazing amount of good.

So inspiring!!! Go Rob.
Great work man! I dig it. You're an inspiration. Peace!
If everyone starts living like this we would go back to middle ages.
Alex Black No cause someone would have to own the house that the rest of us would be squatting on.
Robert M ha, that was very funny!LOL
Ken Barnett I'm still laughing!
This is amazing. You are amazing. Great job at living this lifestyle.
Doesnt that ocean water make you all sticky and itchy?
+portraitphenomenon Nope!
+Rob Greenfield How do you control body odor? I hate deodorants, but I have to work for a living ;-)
Thanks Rob, so many great ideas!
This would work well for a single person but I am a married man with 3 kids. My family will want a divorce if I force them to this.
You shouldn't force anyone to do anything. As a family every person is equal and you should have conversations before making changes so that everyone can enjoy life and be comfortable.
Dude, you are #GOALS! Fantastic life you have!
What do you do for a living? even with no bills, you still have to at the very least pay the tax for no health insurance.
+seabliss22 Wut? when you don't have a health insurance you pay a tax? wtf?!
In the U.S if you dont have health insurance you have to pay a penilty during tax time. If you dont pay it, you will be charged interested on it compounded daily. :(
seabliss22
Damn, health insurance companies did a great job on lobbying.
+seabliss22 what about homeless people with no money they don't have to get health insurance. Plus the fine is a lot cheaper than heath insurance
The fine is based on income.
Great video. I respect this way of living. It soon awaits me. I'm excited about making readjustments in my lifestyle and consumption values.
no minerals in that rain water...
+about em great place though really love it!!
+about em Nope, but plenty of bird shit.
Plenty of bird shit and bugs in that rainwater though lol
Rob , I recently found your channel
Super inspirational
Brilliant work man
Rob do you have a job?
Joel Hernandez I no longer work just for the sake of making money. Instead I work to make the earth a better place. More on that here. www.robgreenfield.tv/TheTeenyGreenyFAQ
army and disasters will tear up the cities after riot from people being hungry. the money system is closing down completely.we must find our way away from it
Rob Greenfield have fun being an old man without any securities. hope you can still fill your buckets of water then
mxmlnklngr same goes for you too
Tuomas Sipilä lol
Ive watched your videos a million times and I am in love 😍😍😍😍😍
So the guy let's you occupy square footage on his land that he has to pay tax on while you make a video saying you're living for free?? Hmm, the property owner is one hell of a nice guy or an idiot.
+Internet Tough Guy He's working for him, not living for free.
Brandon Quinn On a regular basis or just cleaned up the property that one time?
Internet Tough Guy
His work seems to be a WIP.
Brandon Quinn I guess he better work real slooooow so he can stay there long term. lol
+Internet Tough Guy Jim and I have a great deal. He's very happy to have me and I'm happy to be there. It's been a mutually beneficial deal.
Cool idea. Only downside is every time I see it done it's relying on someone else's backyard. So it's very foundation is relying on someone else, not self-reliance.
You forgot to mention the clothes peg for your nose, or the frequent anti-tetanus shots through living in your own shit.
Dr Verity Strange-Fish hahaha brilliance
this is awesome and inspiring! keep doing what you're doing!
This was very inspiring and interesting, it's so nice to see other people interested in Off The Grid lifestyle. Good job!
you musty little dude
.
simple and perfect, you are great
Rob is making a Natural Impakt for sure. Hats off to you. Good Man.
Dude, I aspire to live in a simple manner as well! Love your video and way of life!
Plus he's just into this sort of stuff too.
you're a amazing down to earth guy I can respect, keep up the awesome lifestyle:-)
I think the composting toilet is a real major technological development. I hope that Joe Jenkins gets recognized for his work with it. Please do yearly or so updates on how well your toilet system works. If all your changes, the composting toilet is the one that can do an amazing amount of good.
Love your video, very inspirational.
Very inspirational bro! I also read up your blog. Truly inspiring!
Fantactic and a big inspiration for freedom and sustainability.
I would like to have a refrigerator like yours but I can't find one anywhere
