My family thinks I'm crazy because I'd truly love to move into my motorhome eventually. I want to live a minimalist life with my children. I want to teach them the value of lost skills.
Same, what Rob is discussing and sharing are goals for me too.
cool thing is that as you put effort into that, your kids learn on their own and eventually start teaching you things! It was like that just from gardening with my mom who worked in the city and I went to school all on the grid but just from the effort planted that seed. 'The less you want the more you have' really does encapsulate how to make tiny living work, I started getting rid of my things in stages over 3 years and by the time I moved into my tiny I missed nothing whatsoever with room to spare. I cut my living expenses about 80% and with it all the pressures that come with modern life.

I Really appreciate Rob Greenfield. Living in Haiti, I find that sustainable living is natures choice. And is a vision of mine to initiate a model eco community here. To much pressure on the grid. Once I can gather some friends in the world that would love to find peace on a small piece of the earth for a awhile, we'll just do it. Thanks, Rob.
How is it to live in Haiti ?
@@HueNarcisWorld in the countryside of northwest Haiti; it's a refreshing getaway from the grid. The best part is food from the tree and meals are prepared in no time. No artificial or chemical preservatives. A healthy adventure for the outdoors type. I would love to be the pioneer of showing my people a model of sustainable living. You think we got friends who would like the idea of being an eco-tourist for a couple weeks. I can just imagine someone like rob greenfield or Kirsten Dirksen roamimg around our thick forestry 80 acres of semi mountain land, building homes with earth and some waste materials. Solar energy, rain water harvesting, compost making.. Wow the life I've dreamt of all my life. Can someone please help me find my place in this world???. Sorry, but it's an emotional subject for me.

Thank you for this video. I have enjoyed watching your videos and very much agree with you. I love you touched on the green washing with energy because it does take so much input for those green technologies. We are a family of five that have a homestead. We use fallen wood in an outdoor wood boiler to heat our 1850s home(1500 sq feet) and hot water. Our grey water gets minimal treatment and we have a cesspool so it’s like a giant compost toilet feeding the surrounding trees/bushes. We grow a lot of our own food as well. Eat foods and use herbal remedies in season. Keep making great videos!
Wood burning will create way more pollution than solar panels do over their lifespan.

This guy is what we call .... spiritually aware ... the ultimate of what makes us human and different to other species. It would be an honour to meet such an enlightened being. The ultimate sign of an enlightened being is one who does NOT cause harm on to any living being and one who understands why it is wrong to consciously or unconsciously bring a human being into this world. Only the buddhist monks and nuns truly understand this. Yep. figured out all that he says and i'm trying to move myself in that direction. i'm already somewhat there.
You are such a positive person, I like to listen to your wise words! Living simply in Germany really causes problems, you need a lot of strength! When we wanted to implement a composting toilet back in 1989 it was a really hard task convincing the officials! After a lot of exchange of arguments we got the permission! Also getting permission to use our rainwater for the washing machine, a second toilet on the upper floor and the garden took some extra time and effort! Needless to say I never owned a car, BUT: I was able to retire at the age of 57 after having worked only parttime for most of my "career"!
Living frugally is much more fulfilling than following the mainstream consumerism. Quality of life is not acchieved by doing what your neighbors do. I love to watch and smell and feel and taste nature, that is fulfillment for me! I get my best food from my own garden, almost all year round. I am planning on growing more at a communal place, but that is to be seen...
it is indeed sad that many times we are not allowed to live the life we want, and many times you need to move someplace else just so you are allowed to do the right thing. I'm happy you are striving do do what can be done and not finding excuses !

I'm so tired of explaining myself to people who don't really want to listen. I mean, they ask about why am I doing this or that, but have no patience for actually listening, probably because they don't really care. Since I don't want to waste my own time and energy, I'll just forward them this video and stay hopeful :-)
Sharing resources such as tools etc., is always a great idea. Many extended family members I know do that. With older adults, healthcare is always a concern before Medicare kicks in. High blood pressure issues etc. are often genetic and patients must take daily medication to keep it under control. No matter where we are, or what we have in life, there is always something we CAN change to be more environmentally friendly and use less resources. Getting out of debt and cutting the cable bill for example, is something everyone can strive for to keep more money in their pocket and eliminate the stress of monthly bills. I cut the cable bill years ago, and use a small cheap antenna next to my TV to catch local weather. I live in tornado country, so weather can be a concern at time. I enjoy your channel and your life mission. Keep up the great work!

I have a 10,000 gallon catchment tank, all of my food scraps go to the pigs and chickens. Cesspool handles the waste. I chose where I live based on the climate so I never need heating or air conditioning and minimum clothing. Great fishing and hunting and outdoor activities that are free.

I’m trying to learn as much as I can about simple living and sustainable living. I went back to my country about two years ago and I bought a piece of land and I have great plans to create something like you created in Orlando. We utilize catchment tanks here in Hawaii/Big Island due tot he amount of rain on the island. There's an UV filtration in place for this rainwater. Some of the residents live off-grid and sustainably especially, due to the land space on the Big Island. Love your simple lifestyle!

You are simple yet you have inspired me with your great insights about the world that we want to live in:
1. Minimalizing our needs and increasing our responsibilities :) gives us more power.
2. Demonetization and sharing/exchanging our skills and resources.
3. Building community - and empowering others to become more aligned with nature.
4. Our Current situation dictates that whatever we choose we will be faced with hardships, so face it with forbearance (taps) is the right attitude and of course being on the nature side gives us the power to live happily and eventually will die with peaceful, contented mind, instead of passively accepting the current greedy selfish capitalism, consumerism and exploitation of nature and people and later suffering the consequences of this global egoistic karma.

Love your video. Thanks so much. We are not living in a tiny house right now but we went from all most 2000sq ft house to 1000sq ft for 5 of us. We are trying to simplify things and did alot more gardening and our fruit and berry bushes are growing. Please keep sharing your videos We may get there some day.
Be proud of yourself, 1000sqft for five is an example to follow ! "tiny house" has become too much of way to categorize things. We need to use the minimum resources that we can, this applies to housing and other everything else as well

I love my Berkey 😭💜 It's to the point where I'd rather drink no water than drink out of a faucet. Gives me chills thinking of all the gunk in tap water...
It's very simple to build your own filter.
@@frantzsaintil3624 Yes I've seen many videos of simple versions using two 5 gallon buckets one inside the other with the Berkey filters installed in the top one and a spigot installed in the bottom one.
To take it one step further I imagine you could gather and stratify all the filter mediums, sand, activated charcoal and several more types of materials and build an outdoor water filter which would be helpful in lots of different circumstances for outdoor water filtration.

For me the number one concern that i can not not deal with beyond exercise and eating healthy is healthcare. I live off of $200 month after leaving a corporate based job, but am planning to grow enough food and maybe trade for meat so that I can even cut these expenses. I am living communally right now with my family and we share with each other.
much easier to achieve your goals if you give up on meat. this is is one of the best things to do for your health as well. do a little research, get out of the biases. we are apes

I love what you said about adjusting to who you are. Some years ago I found a 160sq ft tiny house I loved. I purchased it used so as to not create any more construction trash for landfill. I've lived in it a few times since then but have had a lot of problems finding land I could live on legally that is safe because of yearly fires where I am. Now I'm 60 and starting to feel like all this is passing me by even though I still want to homestead and live tiny. After this video I'm sure I can solve this problem and I'm inspired to think about it. I was going to sell my tiny house but now I may have to think about how to make things work for who I am now.

I like that Rob mentions solar and wind ,& where these tools are put. In western southern AZ , Chinese families own vast amounts farm land & lease it out to the public utilities, where you see miles and miles of solar panels. I cried the first time I saw them

I guess a question on the compost toilet is, if someone is in treatment for a medical problem, for example going through chemo treatment, I would be concerned about them using a compost toilet because residual of their treatment could still persist in their poop/output, I would be concerned about using that compost, thoughts? thank you for your work.

I just watched your video on body odor. I want to stop using deodorants and am wondering if white vinegar would work? I eat a simple diet but eat raw garlic that's been soak in honey.
I and many others like me no longer have bad b.o. and don't need deodorant.
We follow strict carnivore .
I haven't use any soap or deodorants for about 2 years (expect for when I work with automotive lubricants). I keep really actives, spending most of my time outdoor in texas or florida. there is some armpit smell, but nothing to worrisome. clean water is enough for me to wash with(same for my hair). I am vegan which probably contributes to reducing odors
Every body is different. I have never felt a need for vinegar and don't use anything on my armpits, including soap.
I have heard of people using vinegar. Plenty of online resources you can look into!

I would be interested in knowing what has happened to those tiny homes you have left behind. Were they passed on to others or did the homeowners of the properties tear them down and send them to landfills?

Hi Rob! I share the same opinion about "zooming out", "alignment between values and lifestyle", and also the benefits of demonetizing. But on this last point, how can one deals with the necessity to have a medical treatment an pay for it? This can be a constraint to keep us working for corporations.

LATE posting on purpose..... TINY HOMES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN a part of American history. They were called 'shotgun houses', where the slaves and their families lived, while working the fields on large plantations. Sooooooooooooooooooo for me tiny home movement is NOT A NEW ISSUE TO ME Arkansas and Louisiana still have many shotgun houses, where folks still live in them!!!!!!........................................................... a woman of color in the Ozarks
also people have been living in trailer homes for so long; nothing is really that new, just people have short memories
Rob, how were you able to travel to and around France without having a credit or debit card?
This is the lifestyle that I wish to lead. Would love to build a tiny house. Live in Michigan. Seems like its almost impossible
to find communities where it is allowed. thoughts or options ?
it would seem that in many states you are allowed to build a small cabin without permits, it think it needs to be under 250 sqft. also in rural areas you can usually get away with building anything you want without fear of authorities.
Can you recommend any ideas for using a bike safely in rural areas?
Use helmet, lights at dark and go only side roads - never main roads if possible.
