  • Individual actions can amount to change at a large scale. In his talk, Rob explains how this applies to environmentally friendly living. His extreme activism initiatives, such as the “Trash Me” campaign he ran in New York in 2016, are meant to awaken our consciousness on the impact our actions have on the planet. Rob invites us to commit to small daily changes to become the change we wish to see in the world.
Rob Greenfield is an adventurer, environmental activist, humanitarian, and dude making a difference. He is dedicated to leading the way to a more sustainable and just world. His activism creates eye-catching visuals that inspire people to self reflect on how they can make positive changes in their lives to be a part of the solution to our current environmental and social problems. He lives a near zero waste lifestyle with just 111 possessions to his name and donates 100% of his media income to grassroots environmental non-profit organisations.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      Hi Rob,
You really inspire everyone who cares about the environment and challenges the rush of the economic world. I got a question for you. How do you like to address about living zero waste life in developing countries where people want to live a city life?
      Thank you! :)

    • @Robin.Greenfield
      @Robin.Greenfield 7 лет назад +22

Hi Mann Kumari Giri! That's a great question to bring up. The beautiful thing about zero waste living is that it doesn't have to be uncomfortable and it doesn't have to feel like you are giving up a lot. There are so many things that can be done easily no matter the country and city. For example, carrying a reusable water bottle (get a water purifier if the water is not clean), reusable dishes, to go containers, utensils, etc. Instead of paper towels and napkins you can use a washable cloth. Composting keeps resources like food scraps out of the landfill and turns them into soil and this can be done fairly easily in many cities. It is indeed possible to create very little waste even in a city in a "developing country" and there are many, many people who are doing it already. It takes dedication, resourcefulness, and the ability to stand up for what you believe. My website is full of resources and guides to help in this journey.
      Sending you love!
      Rob

I got a question for you. What would you tell, if that person love to be green, but have to work in order to pay the high rent in the city for his or her family. But really getting upset about the current lifestyle, and thinking of changing her or his career into sustainable lifestyle. What he or she shall do?

    • @Morten_Nielsen1979
      @Morten_Nielsen1979 6 лет назад +5

Sustainable Tips I can answer that since it is actually excactedly the positive change I am working on right now. I want to guide people to live a more moneyless, free and very environmental-friendly life. I am going to open an albergue (Bed & Breakfast) on Camino de Santiago here in Spain where I live. My albergue will demonstrate to pilgrims from all over the world how to live a free, happy and sustainable life.
Step 1. Buy or rent land, and build a tiny house out of recycling and/or natural materials.
Step 2. Apply the principles of Permaculture. Grow you own food, raise chickens for eggs and meat. Make a little pond for trouts. Use your waste-water, poo and pee for underground watering and nutrition for your vegetables. Alternatively compost, and just use your waste-water manually for your garden. There are many smart environmental-friendly solutions to be implemented.
Step 3. Sell all stuff you don't need, or donate to second hand shop, or give away. Sell your car and use bicycles and public transportation. Sell or rent your apartment/house if you own one.
Step. 4 Work as little as possible.
Those steps are the fundamentals. On top of my albergue, we (my girlfriend and I) are going to make free instructive videos and put on RUclips, Instagram, Facebook etc. Being a professional bar-musician (singer and guitar player), part of my idea is to play a concert every night for the pilgrims, and talk about my environmental conceps and ideas. I will of course also use my musical skills to help attrack attention on my internet-channels. Besides that, I will do everything I possibly can to convert as many people as possible.
One question to you Rob: There will be 400.000 pilgrims annually walking by my albergue every year. By playing concerts and putting all my positive energy into the Camino, I am also helping to attrack even more pilgrims. The problem is that these pilgrims come by plane mainly. You could argue that they would fly to another tourist-destination anyway, so I am not really creating more indirect co2-emission by being on the Camino. On the other hand, you could also argue that it would be better to stay away from this tourist-magnet, and just build a small cabin by the river, do my permaculture thing and my instruction-videos from there. But on the Camino I will have a much bigger impact with my project. What is your take on this?
Keep up your awesome work. Much respect.
      - Morten

My wife and I are starting our new journey, calling ourselves urban homesteaders, by gardening heavily all over our tiny 1/8th acre lot, leaving our jobs that only promote more materialism, consumerism, and capitalism, and learning foraging techniques to supplement what our lot can't support (yet?!😁).
We've loved So much of what we've seen from you, Robin, and are using what you DO, what you teach to lean on as we make our changes.

Wow. I compost my food waste and use in my garden. I use cardboard for weed suppression in my garden and alleyway (before smothering with woodchips). That deals with food and cardboard packaging waste. Has made a huge difference in reduction of my household waste recycling. I also practice permaculture, hugelculture and no dig gardening techniques. I smothered my entire rocky alleyway under 12 inches of woodchips from a local family run arborist (live in London, UK), who was quite happy to oblige as he did not have to pay some one to take the woodchips off him after doing a local job of cutting trees. We both benefitted reciprocally. It's TRUE, making these changes makes you happy. I will be growing more food, veg n herbs in my kitchen garden at the same time. Feel empowered, secure n happy. Thank you for sharing. By sharing your experience, I am inspired to do even more :)

Great talk, Rob! We have been making small changes for years now, they certainly do add up! Next step, expanding our family garden to grow more of our own food. You are true inspiration for humanity! In the last year and a half my boy friend and I sold our house and almost everything we own. We bought a used RV and lived in it for 4 months on a piece of land, to find out it wasn't drivable and had delamination. So we found a whole sale buyer, sold it, and bought a 21 ft travel trailer (we've lived in it for 9 months now on my parents property). I traded in my Subaru for a Jeep to tow it with. It took a long time to sell our house for many reasons but it sold after 6 months. The last few months we've been preparing to travel for the first time in our RV which meant quitting our jobs, paying off all of our debt and finding a new way to make money as we travel. Next week we hit the road! We are currently in VA and are on our way to the west coast hoping to find property to live on and trade labor for living. We are very excited, nervous, scared and fascinated, but were jumping in and just doing it. I watched quite a few of your videos and you truly are living the dream.
We want to be self sustaining. We want to have less so we can live more. Living in an RV has gotten us very close to that but we still have some adjustments to make. Can't wait to watch all of your videos and use so many more of the tip you share about living free. Thank you for being amazing!

Hi Rob, enjoying every step you share in being a responsible, loving human as part of this beautiful planet we live on... I aim for the same for many, many years already... The thing that saddens me most is that up until now i have not been able to even interest my kids one single bit... They shove me aside as being totally extreme and weird. They live for money and ease. Not bothered to even look into the matter. Even now, as they have become parents themselves, which is completely baffling me.... They are your age. I have tried everything. I can try to be a positive change in the world, but i cannot get my kids to understand the need even. I have to admit it frustrates me immensely. One of the reasons why i am happy for each and every person that is.... thank you again for sharing

Love. Thank you so much. I have been making small changes too. Reusable bags for all stores, walking more, reusable water bottle & tea/coffee mug, glass food storage, eliminating saran wrap for reusable cloth bowl covers, making my own cleaners with glass bottles, using cloth napkins, using reusable towels instead of paper towels, using bar soap at the sinks, spending more time outside, meditating, eating mostly plant-based, moving more often over convenience for the health of my body & the planet, consuming less, & sharing more and I am going to continue to take more steps. I am currently working on getting into the habit of telling restaurants, "no straw please" and learning about Nonviolent Communication to clean up my language.
I think you may really enjoy Katy Bowman's book, Movement Matters, where she equates how moving more and taking care of our bodies in ways we often don't think of leads to less waste and destruction on the planetary level.

Hi Rob. Like I had said on facebook, I have watched your journey for awhile now. I remember you in your tiny house and you started to inspire me then. I try to have a paperless kitchen, still use paper towels but barely. Making beeswax cloth "saran wrap". Have been using cloth grocery bags for the store (for years now) but am now in the process of ordering Onya bags for produce and bulk items. (Was going to make my own, lol, just haven't done it so am no just going to buy them.) Growing my own food, making so much more of our meals from scratch. I could go on, but you asked for one. Will continue the journey to buying less, and living a simple life, as much as I can. Blessings.

I'll be going back to buying bulk from the local grocery store instead of ordering bulk online on Amazon where it turns out to be cheaper, but comes with excessive amounts of packaging of cardboard and plastic

      You could repurpose the bottles.
Also you can grow backyard grapes or mullberries and make your own wine. I've made mullberry wine from wild mullberry trees in my backyard. It's easy.

Thanks for sharing your inspiring experience! I do most of these little things to reduce my impact and we generate very little trash, of which 99% is recyclable. Maybe the one thing I can do as a start to a list of positive changes is to count my possessions. I might have to narrow this down though to a room at a time because in total that is a bit overwhelming. This is something I really want to do though because I have a lot of things that I no longer need and I need to give them to people who could use them.

That's a great one! A huge part of my journey was simplifying my life and getting rid of all the things that were cluttering my life both physically and mentally. It took me 5 years to get to where I am now but the trick was every 6 months or so going through most of my stuff and asking myself if I'd used it in the last 6 months. If I hadn't and I thought it wasn't really serving me well then I'd get rid of it and find it a likely better home where it would actually get used. Little by little I'm sure you'll do it with dedication!

Thing about expiry date on food is
The companies already make profit "Good enough"
They play safe by keeping expiry much less than the actual..
But yeah the best thing always seems to be growing own food 🌿☮

Love this. I'm lucky where I live. Ireland has had a green recycling bin for cardboard etc, a brown bin for compost for years now on a weekly collection basis . Bottle banks and recycling centres are everywhere. We have also had re usable carrier bags for at least ten years. You have to pay for a disposable carrier bag, and some of the supermarkets don't even offer that service any more. I don't drive, no kids and am also vegetarian. Next on my list is to try live zero waste. This hasn't been really viable here, however a zero waste market has just opened up 😊 Re usable water bottle and bamboo toothbrushes are also rules from watching this. We don't eat out the same as ye do in the US. Re usable plates etc are the norm here. From watching this and other docs, I realise Ireland might not be perfect but on a whole we are pretty environmentally friendly compared to other Western countries in our small daily habits. Thanks for the talk 😊

gypsysun100 I love Ireland! It is the one country I would move to in a heartbeat. I did look into emigrating there but it's not that easy in terms of Irish requirements.
