I graduated in 1989. Winger's first album came out in 1988. At that time, there were so many hair bands that were all putting out great music, and we jammed to them all. Winger was among those. The first album was great, and we loved it (check out Hungry, Headed For A Heartbreak, Madalaine and Time to Surrender). I distinctly remember putting Winger above many of the other bands, because I simply enjoyed the music. It was hard-hitting and edgy, Reb Beach was just amazing, and the songs simply rocked. The circle of friends I was in loved Winger. At the time, we didn't care that the music was formulaic, it was still good, and we spent many years listening to it (until we outgrew Seventeen). As at least one other commenter mentioned, we lived in a different time when it wasn't abnormal for an adult man to date a sixteen year old. I myself dated a sixteen year old at the age of eighteen, and we stayed together past her turning age eighteen. It was a different time. Yes, parents cared, but the kids did not. What the boomer parents of the time wouldn't tell you is that they did the same thing, but younger. Things are so hyper-sensitive today, and I don't subscribe to any of that mess. I'm a child of the 70's and 80's, and I refuse to be held hostage by such silliness.

This was arguably their biggest hit, but my personal favorite was Madellaine. Class of '85 here, right in the middle of 80s🤪❤. As for controversy over the lyrics, I don't recall any, but then again, by then Dee Snider ripped Al and Tipper Gore a new one over music ratings in congress, so they backed off lol. That was also in 85. As far as the suggestive lyrics, Stonewall Jackson released a song "Push the Panic Button" in 71. Its country but give it a listen,

Well, in Europe, the age of consent is 17... in Asia it's 14 in some countries... 🙄In honesty, Winger wrote those lyrics to fit in w/ the 80's rock bands of the day... in reality, Kip Winger (vocals & bass) was a bit goody-two-shoes... he was a ballet dancer... married and then widowed, when his first wife Beatrice died in an auto accident in 1996. Kip Winger was also Alice Cooper's bassist in the 80's. It was kinda unfair that Winger became targeted by Beavis & Butthead (even Metallica had a Kip Winger 'pretty boy' dart board in their video for 'Nothing else matters') ...they just got caught up in the anti-80's rhetoric in the early to mid 90's. It killed their career...
Bassist Kip Winger was a top musician who rose in the 80's in Alice Cooper's band, but he wanted his own success... Labels would not take him seriously, but somehow, his managers allegedly tricked Atlantic Records head into signing Winger... Their music was similar to Bon Jovi's mega records in the 80's, and they had top talent w/ Rod Morgenstein (drums), Reb Beach & Paul Taylor (guitars) ...debut album in 1988 went platinum after the hit ballad 'Headed for a heartbreak' broke Winger into commercial success.
2nd album 'In the heart of the young' was more like a Journey album, and went platinum on the success of the ballad 'Miles away' and the rock single 'Easy come easy go'... However, the advent of the 90's and changes to the music industry put Winger in the back burner... 'Beavis & Butthead' mocking Winger was enough to kill their career - guitarist Reb Beach claimed that once the cartoon aired, Winger's sales stopped cold... 3rd album 'Pull' was finally released in 1993 (Paul Taylor had left the band) and it failed commercially, despite being a good record. Winger broke up... Reb Beach joined Dokken, and then Whitesnake in 2002... Rod Morgenstein played in Dixie Dregs, a prog band... Eventually, Winger did reunite in 2006 w/ Kip Winger, Reb Beach & Rod Morgenstein in the band and released the album 'IV'... They have been recording and touring often since then and are considered a stellar live band.
Besides 'Seventeen' (which was largely a gimmick)... their songs like 'Hungry'... "Can't get enuff"... 'Madalaine'... 'Rainbow in the rose' ... are not controversial at all.

I think its important to understand the difference between ages then, and now.
Back then, 17 was very much more an adult in comparrison... people were getting kicked out of their parents house at 17 and 18, and had to grow up very quick. The one girl in my grade 11 high school class had a 31 yr old fiancee... and that was the start of me feeling that might be a little weird. Young people are treated more like 'children' now, and aren't really expected to grow up so fast. It was a different time.
I cranked this album in my car driving down the main strip in our city on Friday nights and no one batted an eye at all. I'm pretty sure we played this song at school dances.

I was in Germany while in the Army from 87 - 89. They didn’t have a lot of music compared to other bands but we enjoyed the hell out of them. I always liked this tune. Also around this time the Bullet Boys came out with Smooth Up In You. Music was changing and the hair bands were on the way out when the 90’s hit. It will always be my favorite music though!

This song/video was one of the most popular/requested on MTV back in the day!! This song still KILLS IT!! And there was ZERO controversy when it came out!! U gotta a realize when Hair Metal was at its peak the lyrical themes to all songs were: girls, partying, getting laid and picking up prostitutes. PERIOD.

As someone who was big fan of Winger (mainly for guitarist Reb Beach) previous to B&B, I thought the joke about Stuart was hilarious and cracked up whenever he popped up with that shirt. They have a lot of fantastic albums and have another coming out. I was a Thrash guitarist in the 80s and my peers gave me some shit about liking Winger--until "Heading For a Heartbreak" came out then they got it. They ended up seeing them with me multiple times after that.

Hey this stuff has been going on before the 80's. I was only 17 in 1985 no pun intended.🤣 Check out KISS..... Christine Sixteen. Listen to these lyrics from KISS. Billy Idol..... Rock the Cradle of Love. Love your reactions T.

Unfair! I grew up listening to Kiss and I always interpreted the lyrics to Christine Sixteen as them reminiscing about a girl named Christine who was 16 back in the day when they were 16 too and went to the same high school as her. I never once imagined that they were grown men lusting after a 16 year old girl named Christine.
I’m 36 and I still reminisce about a girl named Heather who went to my high school when she and I were 16.

@@dwaynek.1293 ok so I took your advice and read the lyrics with my adult eyes and unfortunately I have to admit that you’re right. Those are some incriminatingly creepy lyrics.
