Winger were all studio musicians who came together out of Alice Cooper. The drummer, Rod Morganstein, is a prog rock drummer from the Dixie Dregs, Reb Beach has played guitar with Chaka Kahn, Dokken, Night Ranger, Winger, solo stuff and is currently the longest lasting member of Whitesnake aside from David Coverdale.
Winger has released 3 albums since their reunion in 2006 - 'IV' (2006)... 'Karma' (2009) and this record "Better days comin' " (2014). Winger did try to evolve their 80's sound w/ the 'Pull' album in 1993, but no one was listening to them in the grunge rock era. A number of 80's rock bands tried to make themselves relevant musically and released great albums... 'Dog eat dog' by Warrant... 'Subhuman race' by Skid Row... 'Let it rock' by Great White... 'Fear no evil' by Slaughter... 'Vicious circle' by L.A. Guns... 'Native tongue' by Poison... Motley Crue self-titled album w/ vocalist John Corabi... "It's 5 O'clock somewhere" by Slash's Snakepit... 'Dysfunctional' by Dokken... 'Still climbing' by Cinderella... 'Show business' by Kix... '3' by Firehouse... 'Hey man' by Mr. Big... 'Terrified' by Quiet Riot... etc. But no one gave them a chance... Even established metal & rock bands failed to make an impact in the 90's... Iron Maiden's 'The X factor'... Accept's 'Objection overruled' ... Testament's 'Low'... Overkill's 'W.F.O.'... Exodus' "Force of habit"... Saxon's 'Dogs of war'... Manowar's 'Louder than hell'... Anthrax's 'Stomp 442'... Scorpions' 'Face the heat'... Dio's 'Strange highways'... Motorhead's 'Sacrifice'... Black Sabbath's 'Cross purposes'... Metal Church's 'Hanging in the balance'... Deep Purple's 'Purpendicular'... etc. None of these records had a major impact in sales or musically, sad to say...
All solid albums too. I have every album you mentioned except for Manowar, Exodus, Testament and Overkill. I've heard the Testament and Overkill albums though. Neither one made a bad album.
Not sure if this has been said, but great observation that this is what the 80's glam metal should have evolved into. Witness is probably my favorite Winger track.
Hey T, check out FROM WINGER: 1) WINGER (1988): HUNGRY, MADALAINE, TIME TO SURRENDER, POISON ANGEL, HIGHER AND HIGHER, HEADED FOR A HEARTBREAK (BALLAD) 2) IN THE HEART OF THE YOUNG (1990): RAINBOW IN THE ROSE, IN THE DAY WE’LL NEVER SEE, EASY COME EASY GO, YOU ARE THE SAINT I AM THE SINNER, BAPTIZED BY FIRE, MILES AWAY (BALLAD) 3) PULL (1993): BLIND REVOLUTION MAD, JUNKYARD DOG, IN FOR THE KILL, HELL TO PAY, IN MY VEINS 4) IV (2006): DISAPPEAR, YOUR GREAT ESCAPE, M16 5) KARMA (2009): DEAL WITH THE DEVIL, PULL ME UNDER, FEEDING FRENZY, STONE COLD KILLER 6) BETTER DAYS COMIN’ (2014): QUEEN BABYLON, TIN SOLDIER, MIDNIGHT DRIVER OF A LOVE MACHINE, OUT OF THIS WORLD
Great review. People always put down the Hair Metal Era, but fail to realize how talented a lot of these bands were and still are. Winger is right there at or near the top.
Their image was their curse. Kip was too good looking. The MTV Era so the label really highlighted and pushed the image. But these are serious, kick-ass musicians! Rod Morgenstein, the drummer, is from the Dregs, for God's sake! Winger never did much in the way of odd meter or polyrhythmic stuff, but he is very good at playing to the song, while still going off. So if you listen carefully, you'll find he is throwing in some crazy complex sh*t, he just disguises it really well. Lots of ghosts notes and what not. It is easy to hear in a song like Headed for a Heartbreak. Kip is a classically trained musician and also ballet dancer. That getting out probably didn't help fight the image playing against them early in their career.
This might be their hardest tune...it rocks...wish they'd continued to evolve like this...as a former member of Alice Cooper's band, Kip was a part of my music more so than I realized. I came to appreciate him for a lot more than his looks!
Progressive metal at it's finest. Kip Winger sings and plays with Soul. Reb Beach is one of the greatest guitar players for this genre. Check out 2023's record Seven. The original members from debut record.✌️
Stuart Stevenson knew what good music is. Rod Morgenstein was once a good friend of my family. I used to talk music with him at a barbecue and Dixie dregs live shows
Glad You think they don't suck. They have worked so hard to overcome the 90's .. I discovered a little later , but I've heard most of their early and last songs/music, and I think they are very talented, and have built a very good band of great musicians and friends too .Thank You man !!
Kudos for doing this song! Winger is one of my favorite bands and sooooo underrated 'cuz of a few 80s songs. They are stellar musicians and songwriters. This is a great song!
I've never heard much Winger except those few songs from the 80s. This is a banger. I suspect that back then the label and management had a lot to do with their sound. I've heard that from a lot of musicians. They hated it.
Also wanted to add, that these guys you see in the video are the ones currently touring, Winger is one of the few that sounds live, just like they do in studio. Kip still has a fantastic voice as do all of those musicians you see here. This would be a show to keep your eye out for, before they decide to retire.
Their behind the scenes clips are also worth watching, my favourite from this album is So Long China - Some similar tunes from their previous albums Your Great Escape, Short Flight to Mexico (IV), Stone Cold Killer, Deal with the Devil, Pull Me under (Karma) - Their album Pull is also a banger...
As a longtime Winger fan, I'm glad whenever I hear that someone's opinion of them that was formed purely from "Bevis & Butt-Head" actually LISTENS to their music - and then decides whether to like or dislike the band on their own merit. Also, WINGER just released the single "Proud Desperado" 3 days ago - you should DEFINITELY check that out if your liked this song!
@@TheAdventuresofTNT Well it it isn't really new material. I believe it is live performances of some of their previous songs. Guess I should specified that in my post. Sorry about that. But I can reccomend one of my favorite songs. Check out "Down Incognito" from their "Pull" album. That album was released in 1993 so it isn't really newer. But it was kind after most of the hair band metal started to go away for the grunge. Great review of this Winger song. Well done. 👍👍
Dude! I first LAUGHED about how you were going to promote Winger... and then, BOOM! I was WRONG! The lyrics are ON POINT. And the guitars and bass and drums were ALSO ON POINT? I guess he decided to fu*k a Cougar and said, "Fu*k it, let's GET HARD!"? VIAGRA is a HELLEVA DRUG! 🤣
Favorite: maybe either Headed for a Heartbreak or Witness. 1988: Madalaine, Hungry, Headed for a Heartbreak is a great ballad, with a badass guitar solo and outro solo. 1990: Miles Away, Rainbow in the Rose, Under One Condition; In the Heart of the Young 1993: Blind Revolution Mad, Spell I’m Under, Who’s the One. 2006: Your Great Escape, Can’t Take It Back; Karma 2009: Big World Away, Supernova, Pull Me Under, Always Within Me, Witness; 2014: Better Days Comin, Be Who You Are Now, Out of This World. (Note: Karma is a great album start to finish and worthy of a full listen.) Solo Kip Winger: How Far Will We Go, Another Way, Down Incognito, Under One Condition, Miles Away. Every Story Told, Where Will You Go, Pages and Pages, In Your Eyes Another Life (About his deceased wife/ love of his life)
I like the straight ahead rockers, but as I age I find myself leaning more to the songs that have a bit more melodic structure, not necessarily softer or heavier, either, just songs with a bit more complexity in both musical and lyrical content/structure. Of course, I still love the straight ahead, all out rockers, but when thinking of songs to highlight and suggest I choose the ones that have some uniqueness and individuality and a bit less generic. So you will find that reflected in my song choices above. However, everything they do, they do it well, so it is just a matter of style and preference. The cool thing about having a nice mix is it makes for great diverse albums that stay interesting and make you come back for repeat listens.
There CD Pull is in my opinion there best work. It came out the same year as Nirvana and never got any airplay. Every song on Pull is Amazing. Just pick one. Your reaction videos are great.!!!
Progressive metal at it's finest. Kip Winger sings and plays with Soul. Reb Beach is one rhe greatest guitar players for this genre. Chexk out 2023's rexord Seven. All original members got back together for this one.✌️
I don't believe they have anything new past this album. This song is good, but there are others on this album that are great ( Tin Soldier and Queen Babylon ). Most fans agree they really progressed starting with the 3rd album "Pull" in which pretty much every song is gold. Then they outdid even that album with "IV" where the songs were both catchy and serious, topic wise - M16 being one of the best. You should really weave these picks into your journey, among the "hits" that everyone knows.
T!!! You still got to listen to "Headed For A Heartbreak." There's more though - Down Incognito - Easy Come Easy Go - Junkyard Dog - Spell I'm Under - Madalaine - Miles Away: This is a softer song I don't remember which one you did but there's - Can't Get Enough - Hungry Another band you ought to try is Badlands. Eric Singer (Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Avantasia) on drums not Eric Carr. Eric Singer left Badlands and joined KISS on drums after Eric Carr passed away. In Black Sabbath after Ozzy on vocals was Ronnie James Dio (Elf, Rainbow), Ian Gillan (Deep Purple), Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Country Communion, California Breed, The Dead Daisies, Hughes Turner Project), Tony Martin. Ray Gillen did record vocals and sing with Black Sabbath but not on any official release. Years later on the remastered deluxe of Seventh Star, it included him singing live at the Hammersmith Odeon, and on the remastered deluxe of The Eternal Idol, it featured his vocals that were recorded, but the original album officially released features Tony Martin on vocals. Ray Gillen also sang in Rondinelli and Sun Red Sun.
I'm surprised Haven't listened to Winger since the 80's. It is a decent rocking tune, I like a heavy faster paced song, this kinda falls flat for me in the refrain would have been a winner for me if there were some screams or growls. Rest of the song was great. Vocals good but not Dio good, he's got some power but not the range. You wanna see DIO good? Good choice! Another of there more recent good songs is Deal With the Devil. As well as Easy Come Easy Go, No Man's Land, Junkyard Dog. You should check out Your Great Escape and Short Flight to Mexico on the Winger IV album. Two great songs. Plenty of absolutely excellent Winger songs to be heard.
Whats your favorite Winger song?
Junkyard Dog (Tears on Stone). Trust me, you're in for another surprise 😉
Hey T, I knew you'd like it. Winger got better with each album. This was their last album but they're working on a new one for either 2022 or 2023.
Hard to beat 2009's Karma, in terms of great beginning to end, all great tracks. However, this album is really good too.
"Blind Revolution Mad", or any song of the Pull album.

What an awesome reaction and feedback. Winger truly deserves way more praise for all their post 80s work.
And the moral of the story is don't listen to a cartoon's opinion on music.
As if

Definitely shameful how fickle and sheep likes the ‘90s rock fan was. Basically killed the genre.
Not sure if this has been said, but great observation that this is what the 80's glam metal should have evolved into. Witness is probably my favorite Winger track.
Nice reaction and it's the guitarists birthday! They dont usually do fast songs like this but when they do it rocks!!🤘🤘🤘

The dudes in Winger could always play...as could a bunch of the musicians and vocalists in Hair Band stuff.
Definitely listen to Winger - Like A Ritual or Winger - Junkyard Dog! BANGERS!
Battle Station by Winger is pretty rockin'. From the Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack (1991)
Damn, didn’t know they were even still relevant, to be honest this sounded better than their 80s stuff, so I’m definitely impressed.

Another newer Winger song "Tin Soldier" is very much prog rock. Many will be shocked to hear this!
👆 This here... amazing song.
Damn great song!!! Kip has truly taken care of his voice.
Check out Winger's newest single "Proud Desperado". Pretty awesome track!!!
Thank you so much for not giving up on a band because of a single narrative. Some will run away. You ran toward it. Love that...
Heading for a heartbreak was always one of my favs.
Agree 100 percent one of the best songs the arrangement is great
Definitely one of my faves from Winger. Kick ass!
Check out "Madalaine" and "In The Day We'll Never See" also.
Dude! I had forgotten about Winger! Shame on me!
Heavy but still melodic!
Joe from Germany
Love this song and so do my young kids. Love Winger.

Uh .. ok.. Wow! This is good, I'd never heard it.
Very clever band.
I’m impressed. I thought they’d fallen off the face of the earth lol
Can you react to the new episodes of Beavis and Butt-Head please where Beavis is talking to the fire in the dumpster that was hilarious 😂👋☺️😊
I hated it. As a huge beavis and butthead fan I was incredibly disappointed.
