Travis Orbin - Periphery Playalongs - "The Walk"

- ...And the series continues. Much like the "Sinus" playalong, I had a couple of days in between sessions to spend how I chose and figured I'd rehearse this bugger a few times. "The Walk" is the first Periphery tune I ever heard, learned/eventually 'Orbinated', and is one of two tunes with which I was requested to audition. Of course, this was back in the old days when Jake Veredika was the vocalist; this version was released after I had left and features the mighty Chris Barretto.
If I had to quantify, I'd estimate about 90% of these parts were composed between when I joined -- Sept '06 -- and 2007, with the remaining bits and some trimmings added sometime up until I embarked to record at Audio Hammer (that story is recounted in my "Project 15" video). Because of this, some of this stuff certainly feels stale and I'd probably do a few things differently. However, I consider these performances 'snapshots' of my progress from the past, both developmentally and creatively, only executed with my current facility.
This video marks the 'debut' of the TRX ICON medium crashes that I've been using (18" & 19"), although I've already rocked 'em in three different sessions heh.
I'd like to state a few things before I issue the usual disclaimer. This isn't a feud nor is it a contest; I am not trying to prove anything. If Periphery had not gone on to blossom into what it is, I'd still construct these videos. These are artistic statements; nothing more, nothing less. It's alright to prefer somebody else's playing - that's the beauty of art, its subjectivity. One's goal should not be to sharply criticize but to be rather constructive. If you cannot leave an artistic exhibition having either learned something new or simply been inspired, then you may deem it to be 'bad'. Of course, this is my opinion and what the hell do I know? Enjoy!

Tempo = 160 BPM
Oh yah... up next is "Far Out". Hopefully I can squeeze more than one of these out per year so it doesn't take me a lifetime to document everything!
Disclaimer: In an attempt to stave off potential ignorant comments as I've received in the past, I felt the need for this nigh preposterous disclaimer. I am doing this for myself and for the sake of posterity. I put countless hours into these parts (composing, practicing, etc.) and wish to share them with everyone. I am in no way bitter or regretful; much on the contrary, I share a mutual friendship with everyone in Periphery and intend to keep it that way. Enjoy the videos!

2:50 my brain melted
jacksepticeye bro!! I just found this. I was just watching periphery drum videos and found your comment. That’s so cool.
jacksepticeye wtf your here???!? Didn’t expect to find here of all places!
oh lol i have watched this so many times never saw this comment lol
before he came face to face with the queen of all the dragons and the android sent by cyberlife, he was at home in ireland watching travis orbin drum videos
That weird moment when a 24Million subscriber channel just has an 8 year old comment on one of the sickest drum videos ever.
2:50 holy shit those ghost notes
12 yr later and still the gold standard
I've probably watched this vid 100 times, I've been binging oldies lately
This one is a beauty. I love watching his old Of Legends sessions.
I misread that at first glance as you've been "bringing old ladies" to watch this video.
PanasonicTooth 🤣🤣
Back to watch this again after a few years....still so sick!
I'm proud of all of my students. If they stay inspired to play and they've taken something from my lessons, it's a wonderful symbiosis.
Still blows me the fuck away. Jeeezus Travis, this bar can hardly be touched.
3:34 "one two three four five, one two three four five"
+Carlo Kind haha, indeed
+Travis Orbin lol I had to rewind and mouth the same thing. Love the videos by the way!
+Travis Orbin Those blushda's are insane
How can anyone ever say he doesn't groove?
He takes this incredibly technical piece and gives it more than just notes. Yes the playing is technical, but all those ghosts, rudiments, everything done as such a fast tempo, in my opinion helps smooth it all out and gives a much more pleasurable listening experience.
Too good for words
I keep coming back to this when I need inspiration. The perfect drum composition getting fully slayed \m/ \m/
I'm not the only one who routinely comes back to this video am I?
You are not..
I lost count of how many times I've watched this after SEVEN BILLION.
SUPER CLEAN as always! I watched this with a huge smile on my face the entire time. Travis, you're a damn BEAST!
3:31 those flams on the feet
ohmagawd o.o
I've watched this over the years so many times and never gets old such a masterful elite class level of sticking and kicking dude is amazing 🙌 Praise Travis for such a great cover and props to Matt Halpern for writing this masterpiece 🎉
Travis wrote it
This is simply put, stallar. I love your setup. Extremely creative.
Holy fucking shit Travis its been a year or so since Ive listened to periphery.. not that that really matters. You wrote some insane parts. Glad they're on RUclips for us to watch. Cheers!
Been here a thousand times, it seems. Never gets old. Timeless video. A fucking treasure trove. Mystical Mastery. Peripheral perfection.
One of the best drum videos that I watch every now and then!!!!
2020 still one of the craziest drum record i've ever seen. This is just something else.
for 3 years i'm waiting for this. Now it is done. Awesome! 2:50 that's exactly why i fall in love with your drumming :)
Best drum cover of this song I have ever seen!
Not a cover, he wrote this stuff while he was on Periphery.
Sizasman's Rebirth I stand corrected. Best original drummer playing along with another drummer playing his work of this song I have ever seen.
lol
Sizasman's Rebirth Actually for P1, Misha wrote all the drum parts. Travis interpreted them to his style. So most everything you hear here is already written, he just added a few things his way.
For example. At 2:50 the grace notes with his left hand, they don't exist on the published P1.
I just cant stop watching this. Your drumsound and your playing is PHENOMENAL!
Tf is happening at 1:07 I can't even tell what he's doing with the stick but it looks awesome
2:50 - 3:40 is hands down one of the best displays of skill and creativity that I've ever seen, in my opinion, and it has become my absolute favorite drum part. I wish one day to inspire somebody half as much as this man has inspired me, not only with his drumming, but with his philosophy as well!
Anytime i watch any of your videos, I just Cry!!! knowing i will never be half as good as you
For some reason, and i know your schedule must be crazy, but I would LOVE to see a video of you emulating different styles of music. Rock, jazz, metal, pop punk-y what ever. Keep up being honestly one of the greatest drummers of this generation.
Both 'Death Of A Dead Day' and Meshuggah's 'Nothing' (the original) subconsciously inspired me to play my ghosts louder in heavy music.
Let's do covers to meshuggah. Obsidian maybe😅😅😅😅
Man I have been practicing this song forever and all those little accents you do on your snare are so damn hard! You are easily the influential drummer I have ever seen in my entire life, hands down.
From one drummer to another you are truly an amazing drummer! Great videos and thanks for some knowledge.
The flams on the bass pedals between 3:31-3:35 are fantastic! Great job playing that Orbinator!
@shaftninja Brings back fond memories for me as well, it was my first time ever hearing anything from sky eats air plane, and I remember how low my expectations where for the show. Literally within seconds of your kick routine warm-up my mood about the show changed. At the time I just started watching your old Periphery play a longs and had no clue it was you until I go home (bad lighting/intoxication). Anyways thanks for making a "bad" show a great one.
i was rockin like a baby craddle while watching u play this haha, phenomenal playing! its awesome seeing these playalongs again. this once again shows why ur my favorite drummer :)
After watching this, it makes me that much more excited to see your Killtrox session!! Gah, I've listened to Death Bringer a hundred times already!!
Been waiting for a vid like this for a while... cannot describe how much I respect you, Travis. Really hoping Of Legends rolls through my neck of the woods sometime soon, it'd be incredible to get to meet you.
You made my week Travis! One of my favorite Periph tunes!
Seeing you do this video after I'd been patiently waiting for it for so long (mostly to see you slay a song I covered for fun) is just awesome!
That relieved shout at the end was epic! Unbelievable video, once again!
Just remembered that whole corner of RUclips called "Periphery self titled with other vocalists and also with Travis Orbin" and how it is 100% bangers
The kick drum sound you've got here is absolutely insane, almost a perfect tone. So phat!!!!
wow!.. this is just insane!! Awesome job on the track mate, truly inspiring!
This is insane the symmetrical blows me away i wish i could play like this
It's people like you who make drumming so much more competitive for us who can't keep up! Don't stop! (Y)
Omg this kit sounds so good! and you my sir are god at playin!
Your dynamics are incredible. You know just the right amount of force to use.
One of your best vids thus far hands down! Top dog drummer right there. (:
Not the biggest fan of the music but can't help but love your skill. So precise and clean. Must be a pleasure micing you up and capturing the epicness.
It's fun to see how much more fluid and comfortable you seem nowadays since I first saw the same parts played way back in your "Select Periphery Parts" video. It's inspiring to see that someone as good as you seems to keep on improving!
The coolest man on the drum! Acting like doing nothing or simple things. God damn it, it was amazing performance and I admire your hardworking and reading and playing notes on such a extreme djent song/s.
I'm still blown away by the ghost-stroke groove at 2:50. Absolutely unique, state-of-the-art technical Orbination applied to a groove that totally grooves. ...If that made sense. Amazing drumming with every note having purpose, as always with Travis!
Dude you fooking kill it!! your unbelievable that has to be the best video I've seen of you rawkus man!!! P.E.A.C.E........
Lord, I can't get enough of Travis Orbin. God, please help me to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom that I suck in comparison to Travis....
Yep, totally hear ya. Just me being funny :)
Travis, you are an anomaly; this is an absolutely legendary performance.
This poped up on my feed, felt compeled to chime in.
I literally wouldn't be half the drummer I am today if it wasn't for Travis's lessons. He's an amazing teacher and a great friend. If you EVER get the chance to study under him, TAKE IT!! You won't regret it. *cough* teacher plug *cough* ;D
Too good. Way too good.
How many people do you know who are technically comparable to your style? This video is incredible, one of your best.
Oh My! I discover new valuable treasures on RUclips everyday! congratulations man! you're a G R E A T musician! and It's an honor to subscribed to your channel haha
dude you are an amazing drummer to watch. Inspiring as well. Love the style breh.
No wonder it took forever for you to get this done and up. shits HARD! lol. I would venture to say with all the nuances like the hand switches, the the triplets with the diddle on your left foot, the foot flams in the solo, all the down to up strokes with the ghost and just general craziness that this is one of the harder songs I've seen you upload! Just such a variety of challenges!
Lol Travis. I had a good chuckle half way through reading the description. I'm sure the cyber archaeologists who find this video after we're all long gone will do the same. I don't think what u did in this video will ever get stale.
You nailed it, like a bosssssss.
Thanks Travis, you're a huge inspiration. :)
your stick tricks make you even more badass :) oh the crossovers as well and hell pretty much everything :P
Got down and on this one! I love it. You're definitely one of my idols
Travis. You make things look so simple. I like your open hand drumming though. Its so smooth I love it!
the spurts dude... so ridiculously clean, love it.
This is like, another level, How does it feel to be one of the most underrated, yet most awesome drummer ever?
I've been waiting for this for 3 years! However, Zyglrox is still my most anticipated video.
The kit sounds SICK!!!!!! I like the way you kept the natural sound of the bass drum unlike most metal drummers wuth the clicky bass drum. Awesome cover dude!!!! :)
I absolutely love how your kit sounds.
Happy 10 years to this upload!
So many rim shots! Love your stuff Travis. Inpired me to practice harder and set my aim higher.
@shaftninja some jazz on the way?? wow, can't wait!
I must say, this is by far my favourite video of yours and your best drum sound in a while IMO. Not to say the other sounds you've been producing have been bad, but these tones kick ass! Very well done sir :)
you are honestly so under-rated!!!!!!
Amazing job, man! I'd love to hear the stuff you're working on now!
I really like drummers like you, Travis, not only because of your amazing skill but your generosity to the drumming community. I'm finally going to get serious and get some drum transcriptions and learning songs the right way. Starting with your "The Walk" transcription. I love free stuff! Thanks!!
im attempting to set my drum kit up like this as a challenge.... didnt realise the challenge would be setting it up! had to come to this video just to look at it. haha your a legend dude.
That was crazy awesome
I still bow to the power that is Travis Orbin.
I don't play drums,although I'd love too,but this man,is siiiiiiiick,Your kit and Michael set up,is soooooo siiiiiiiick
Thankya. I began playing the MS4 model back in March 2010 because I dug the Mangini sigs -- which are 'weighted' -- yet always desired for them to be thicker. They just feel good and sound good when slamming into the drums. I've actually stepped up to the SRH2 Hammers because they're a bit bigger and the tips sound more preferable on cymbals; I love barrel-style tips.
YOU'RE MY ALTIME FAVORITE! OMG THAT WAS INSCREDIBLE!
Hitting that china from the bottom is amazing. Shows how flawless your grip is, very impressive.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO FOR YEARS. OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH YEAAAAAAAAHHHHH
The best drumset ive seen in awhile
gotta say I love that upstroke on the China sick man. great job man
@BurnThePope0514 That is a very pleasant, flattering remark that brings back great memories. Thank you!
What an absolute BEAST!
I love the way the your kit sounds
jezus christ travis, at first i was so dissapointed you weren't comming to holland with periphery and that i couldn't see you with SEA but man your a beast, guess this song will be called the run now, hotdamn i guess the guys from periph have seen another video where they'll be like, ffs why have we let him go in the first place! travis, YOU ARE KING
@shaftninja Your welcome! and of course, didn't mean to say it took you a while to learn or practice, that'd just be silly :) I definitely subscribe so I watch every video you put up! This video stuck out in particular to me for diversity of the challenges it posed and per your usual, the nuances of the performance that may not be apparent to all, but make what you do so incredible and above all musical! keeps me and others coming back for more jaw dropping Travis Orbin! We are the "Orbi-nation"
dear lord... I couldn't keep up wiht a LOT of that... WITH MY EYES.
Holy shit, just Goggled those TRX ICON cymbals and noticed the press release saying they were developed in conjunction with you! That's cool as hell. Top playing as usual. Also I love the mix of the kick here- triggers I guess?
you've always had the best snare sound, i could make love to your mixing
This is the sickest video I've ever seen. Literally.
I cant think of another drummer as precise and well coordinated. This is just unreal
What happened with Periphery? As much as I love Halpern, the Juggernaut albums wouldve been a lot more interesting with you on the kit.
Also are you right-hand dominant or left-hand dominant?
i want to say left but you're so fluid with both, jesus christ I hope one day to be half the drummer you are
He's right handed. He used to play open handed on a normal kit and added the tom on his left to promote more left hand movement. He added the second pair of hi-hats a few years later when he decided to try and use his left foot to lead more often. You can read a blog post about why he left Periphery on his website but the short answer is: a) he wanted to join Sky Eats Airplane and b) he wanted a bit more creative freedom.
It's way more groovy with Matt. Travis is amazing though
Well, if you want your mind blown by another drummer, check out Brent Rodgers. He's a walking metronome!
Robbie Jones Mike Mangini, Mike Portnoy, Troy Wright, Simon Phillips are awesome as well
***** not creative enough? Watch his clinics. The guy is a creative genius.
By far my favorite drummer. Love this.
V glad my algo decided to show me this again.
Travis those ghost notes/ inner beats you added in at 2:50 are incredible!
The flams you play right before that are incredible
