Travis Orbin - Periphery Playalongs - "Racecar"

- Somehow, I relearned this epic in two days. The backing track is from the Bulb Soundclick, which is what I used to write my parts many years prior. You'll hear 'artifacts' of the drums on the original MP3 peeking through here and there.
I used the same gear as the Ow/ANM/LE/NEM/Absolomb/Insomnia vids, so check them out for specifics.
Rather than inundate everyone with notes--as there is obviously MUCH to digest here--I'm just gonna list some of my favorite little drum moments:
0:29 - 0:42 - this craziness, of course
2:52 - 3:12 - pedal hat orchestrations make this far more difficult
3:35, 3:41 - pattern variations
5:51 - 6:02 - love the driving feel of this section
7:02 - 7:37 - this is all highly challenging to play, but feels great
8:07 - 8:15 - SMASH
9:08 - ;)
10:25 - 8th quintuplet cymbal orchestration
10:45 - 10:55 - metric modulation with all former accents retained
11:22 - 11:54 - all this wackiness too
13:17 - 8th septuplet fill-in, with a triplet nested inside of the last two notes (three double kicks)
Only one video remains, and it will be a surprise until I get to it. Could be sooner than later.
You may purchase an isolated drum movie pack of this tune, along with "Letter Experiment", "Not Enough Mana", "Absolomb", "Insomnia", and "Unleash the Pwnies" here: travisorbin2.bi...

Tempo = 150 BPM
Disclaimer: In an attempt to stave off potential ignorant comments as I've received in the past, I felt the need for this nigh preposterous disclaimer. I am doing this for myself and for the sake of posterity. I put countless hours into these parts (composing, practicing, etc.) and wish to share them with everyone. I am in no way bitter or regretful; much on the contrary, I share a mutual friendship with everyone in Periphery and intend to keep it that way. Anyway, enjoy the videos!

My favorite periphery song of all time
Absolutely
I came from future to tell you one word: Rep-fucking-tile!
@@TheEmperius sucks shit compared to the first album
@@TheEmperius I prefer Reptile but love both of these masterpieces
@@TheEmperius Nah, bro... lol
9:08 That "Remember kids, don't try this at home" face always gets me ;P
hehe
Awesome to see you play this. I saw you guys perform in a tiny ass record store in 2007. Those early Periphery days are still my favorite.
Holy shit, I remember that gig haha.
Hands down, without a fucking doubt my favorite video you've posted. I love your session work, but I feel like these songs are where you truly shine. That being said one of my darkest "desires" as a drummer is to watch you write stuff for 'The Number Twelve Looks Like You". I remember reading on some random drum forum discussion back around 09' that you'd go down as one of the most "underrated musicians of our time" on the drums. If memory recalls the poster said you're one of those guys that can be classified as a "drummers favorite drummer". Think that suits you pretty well. Keep grinding man.
Edit: Also love the fill at 13:17....
Hah, never really listened to them aside from their really early stuff. They're pretty zany and very abrasive. And that's a hell of a comment. I appreciate your viewership, always!
Mongrel and Worse Than Alone have some really colourful jazz fusion drum parts. You're the best Travis.
Damn, that would by my favorite drummer covering my favorite band. My 15 year old self would be over the moon
Travis Orbin And I appreciate your constant approach to bettering yourself at your craft my man. Much love from Oregon. "Zany and abrasive" fits them very, very well. I mentioned them after going back and watching your "Pete Peterson" session work. One could say it's almost "right up your alley", haha. Been a blast and a privilege to go down the journey that is your drumming career. Truly an interestingly colorfully rich career you have had. Been following you for around eight years now haha. Don't think there's a general approach you have for anyone, or just any one band/group. From the Cartoon Theory sessions to The Darkest Hour. Just good, clean, complex
rhythms.
devildog621 Lol, almost the exact "feels" I was going for. They've always been a guilty pleasure of mine.
The independence hurts my brain. Can you stop playing for like 20 years so I can catch up?
Anthony Ghazel Hey, could very easily be YOU in a few years if you keep at it! But I've felt this was since discovering Travis eight years ago.
@@BurnTheNuance easily? I think not
7:10 I spit out my food cause that shit was made stale in comparison to that TASTY ASS FILL
Hahahah
HarassedNAGiraffe lmfao
No one can do this. No one is say. Except Travis
I've waited years for this. Thank you sir.
Same, since when I first watched one of his videos
So glad there are musicians like this out there...even tho it makes me feel like a worthless piece of shit!! keep killin it Travis
Haha you aren't worthless! Cheers!
Simply unreal. The section at 7.03 is still potentially my all time favourite drum part. Just slows soo well. You influenced my drumming in a massive way back in the bulb soundcloud days and I remember seeing the early videos of you playing walk, Icarus lives ect and your approach to drumming blew my mind wide opened. I spent so much time after seeing those videos learning to groove leading with my left hand/foot it helped me out soo much in shaping my own drumming style. Amazing playing as always and cheers for sharing these throwback videos.
Thanks so much! That means a lot to me.
Always love to hear these soundclick era mp3s, great playing!
Thankya!
One of my favorite P songs, thanks for your flair and style. The whole 11:30-40 bit was mind blowing
I... I have absolutely no words man. Since i found you many a 'SEA' videos ago, you were already blowing my mind, and you've only gone above and beyond. Just killer man. CANNOT wait for the last one to come!
Cheers!
Absolutely savage. I never knew Leonidas could also kill the drums. Winning! Excellent content!
Soooooo freakin' awesome! Lots of possible "VF15" Instagram moments in there, including 7:02.
Man , it is really surprising how you can play all these songs with versatility and power . It took me a lot of time to even play several Periphery songs imperfectly , and you did it without a hitch ! Seriously , you are mind blowing .
But seriously, I'm a guitar player who used to play drums, and whenever I'm writing drums on guitar pro, I always think of Travis Orbin when writing fills and stuff. You're the fucking king, man.
That's bitchen, thanks so much!
Dude, this is extremely impressive. I've always admired your technicality and analytical yet musical approach to drums, I love the unorthodox setup as well because you just punish it. I've been searching high and low for a transcription for some tasty shit and now I have it, feels like Christmas. Thank you!
Many thanks!
HOLEY SHIT - I just shat a donut shaped shit watching this.
haha
This has always been my absolute favorite Periphery song for a decade. I'm so glad they programmed the VAST majority of your work in the final product. Because I just realized, all of my favorite drum parts from the final version were written by you. This is the song in 2010 that introduced me to Progressive Metal. I remember thinking "who the fuck can play drums like that!?!?".
The drums in the P1 album weren't programmed, they were played by Matt Halpern on an electric kit.
Got a huge smile when i saw this in my feed. It's been a lot of fun seeing you upload all these masterpieces back to back.
Holy fuckkk you're still doing these, thats 3 new periphery playalong vids for me
4:45 wow, the control you have over you left foot, left hand and you’ve got a separate rhythm on your right hand. Amazing!
i was going to say this is so clean and ask how you managed to sight read with only two pages. i didn’t realize you wrote these beats. i just wanted to say thank you. this song continues to pull me through hard times and the drums are my favorite part.
This is my favourite play along from you so far!! You're amazing, keep doing these! 😁
My god man. You are one of those drummers that make you just want to go home and practice. Even if you don't have 3 million views per video dear god please never stop making them.
Do you lead left or right for hands and feet?
Keep these vids comin'!
Depends on many factors. Thanks so much!
@@TravisOrbin I believe you are more of a lefty than righty. I've noticed in many of the videos that you lead on left. Just an observation though! :-)
But man! You are one God of drums!
Set sounds sooooooo freshhhhh :D
I remember when Bulb first created this masterpiece. Suuuch an epic tune. Amazing job on the play along. :)
Awesome footwork, Travis 😊
Many thanks!
I’ve been waiting for this forever, this will definitely help in the parts that have thrown me off. Thanks!
Props to Halpern for not crying and immediately leaving after hearing/seeing what you wrote
3:18. The way you switch up this footwork without any drop in consistency blows my mind. Truly awe-inspiring.
travis your are the man, seriously, super inspirational stuff.
Favourite song off the album, unbelievable performance:)
Cheers, Tom!
Considering you're playing parts sometimes both lefty and righty, and the fact that version is slighty faster that the final one, well it's...Amazing !! Great Job Orbinator !
Hah, didn't even realize it was slower on the album. Thankya kindly!
I bet you $5 Travis is good at "Simon Says".
Been a while since I've seen any of your videos. I come back, and you're thick as hell! Someone's been hitting the gym. And hell yes to Racecar!
I always make sure to check out your videos, the periphery tunes are always a special treat. But this one. This ones ridiculous. Machine. No other way to put it.
WOW! Unbelievable! Great work Travis
this is how the fuck it's done. fuck yes
Incredible.
finally somebody with big balls takes a shot at this song, thank you very much
Lol, takes a shot. He wrote these parts, he's Periphery's previous drummer before Halpern.
*plays AC/DC
+daveed reyes These parts were Orbinated long before they were Halpernized son
OOOOOH WEEEE here we go!
Best drummer alive
Top notch delt development brah
Cheers, brah.
I'll never not be in love with that snare tone
It's my workhorse for a reason!
Yeah man, at the end where the track falls away at the end and you can really hear it. Great body to it, little bit of crisp top end, almost dry
really amazing
Love that snappy snare drum
Your drum skills get better as your muscles get bigger.
YESSSSSSSS
This was my birthday present
Stupendous.
Sick dude! 🔥🔥🔥
I think it'd be super fun if his last surprise periphery playalong wasn't even P1. Something like Orbinated Ragnarok or Make Total Destroy covers would be dope to see.
Sorry, but not gonna happen man. Plus the last one is FAR harder than those tunes.
Travis Orbin Fair enough. Excited for the last playthrough!
Amazing!!!Travis I want to ser you playing Sepultura Machine Messiah playalongs. Come on dude do it!
9:10 lmao you're the bomb straight fire
Amazing
So much precision!
Man I would like to buy all the backings but I can not play a single one. To play your songs only being ambidextrous even though the variations are very creative and depend on the parts of the setup to have the perfect sonority.
You are a genius!
It is almost inconceivable to think of playing these songs with sheet music.
For the sake of clarity, I sell isolated drum movies--NOT backing tracks. I appreciate your kind words!
Okay, sorry if I wrote the wrong word.
When will a live broadcast take place?
I will challenge you to play a samba!
His words were also pleasing, thank you very much for the feedback.
The drum quality in periphery took an enormous hit when you walked away. I wonder what it would've been like had you remained.
well done my friend
It seems, he was born in the studio🤘
Oh my. Christmas has come early
dude absolutely nailed it!! everheard of "weak hand/foot"? highly doubt that haha
You are great dude :)
superhuman
Amazing job man
Cheers!
That shotgun snare tho... also just feel weird at 5:40 because i got really used with them blast beats at the release version lmao
Hero!
Aww shucks
It's just incredible. I can not even find words to describe the admiration for your work. Many years ago I listened to the demo of the periphery and my brain just bled it. Then I heard the first album of periphery (I honestly think that the version without words is much better ... and in general it seems to me that without you they are absolutely not funny) ... I remember hearing
the beginning of the track insomnia .... and naturally the racecar .... Until now I keep it in the player ... I even did a t-shirt myself with the cover of the album .... then I came across your channel .... Every new video I'm waiting for. You're just phenomenal. Particularly struck by the work with the Cartoon theory and Gabriel constract ... well, the tracks from the first album periphery. I'm from Russia and I want you to come to us with master classes. Well, maybe you can come and give lessons. Because
in my opinion you are one of the three best drummers of our time, where else there are Matt Garstka and Alex Rudinger (in my opinion). Your manner of playing and video gives a big push in development. They always have a huge number of new ideas and solutions that move and develop the drumming further.
Thanks so much! I appreciate the fact that you watch my other work (TGC, Cartoon Theory); really proud of all of that stuff. I would love to teach in Russia sometime!
Mr Orbin!still inspirational mate!!!
AWESOME!
That last song better be buttersnips, or else..
Amazing. All recorded thru mics and acoustic drums in digital era.
I really like the way you play. Ive always been turned off by "technical" drummers because they play in a way that is talented but really doesn't make sense to anyone besides like minded musicians. I don't really see the point in that. The way you play makes sense.
Dude this video kicks soo much ass
Brother you killed it fuck yes
9:55 WARNING: May cause non voluntary head bobbing.
You play perfectly
Omg that intro... left foot leads to right foot leads and all
9:04 - 9:29 every time 🤘😤
6:16 cool little fill
One day you will rejoin Periphery doctor Orbin , for sure.
that floor tom is beefy as fuck..
Is the cymbal compression pumping really desireable?
Still the best Periphery song
How easy is this for this guy? Looks like he's knitting a sweater. I'd be sweating my ass off.
Travis you should make more music that sounds P1 like! This can’t be the end
'Projects', my first solo EP, is comprised entirely of material I wrote while in Periph as it was intended to eventually be utilized (after retooling via collaboration, of course). You can pick up a copy at travisorbin.bandcamp.com. Aside from that and any sessions that roll my way that have this 'aroma', there's only one more left. Sorry!
worth following the link for the album description alone.
Travis Orbin thanks dude! I appreciate it haha
Damn
That China sounds sick 😷
4:00 every time I watch one of your videos and see that china stand, I always fear it's going to break.
Those two screws you can see eventually become stripped and I either have to replace the top part of the stand, or sometimes Pearl will send me a new one altogether. It's getting to that point, but don't fret! Haha.
Speaking of Periphery... "Over here, we have Travis Orbin! The only man who can break 3 cymbals with one swing of the stick!"
I LOVE this! Great job dude! Friendly suggestion though... up the volume on the actual track some. Just a touch.
Hey Travis, did you hear about JP Bouvet filling in for Matt Halpern short notice at Knotfest?
I saw. He did a swell job, that would be a tough gig with such short notice.
What zildjian cymbals is he used in this video ?
20" K Heavy Ride, 19" K Dark Crash Thin, custom hats (14" K Constantinople bottom (top) / 14" K Custom High Definition bottom (bottom)), 'stack' (14" A Custom EFX / 16" FX Oriental China "Trash"), 13" A New Beat Hi-hats, 19" K Custom Hybrid Crash, 18" K Custom Special Dry Trash China
just come back to periphery bro for like one session atleast
9:09 is my all time favorite possibly
This video is all about 9:09
5:30 cut
cut?
like 600 o/ ! Amazing, Travis! @callidrummer! insta
Glad there’s another Travis drummer out there good enough to put the more famous one in his place.
I want to see you play Rainbow Gravity so bad. Probably one of my favorite drum tracks
