@@att3r1 do keep in mind that Neil was homeschooled from fourth grade on, and his father was a computer programmer!! doing weird internet projects WAS his schooling so it makes sense he had more time to make ultimate showdown and the like
And he started this career AS A CHILD! His mashups came to my attention just a few years ago, so I asked Jesse Walker if he'd ever heard of Neil Cicierega, and the reporter said he'd reported on him as a phenomenon many years earlier in an article that I'd read and had simply forgotten.
He's a lot of things tbf. You should check out his proper music, his newest album Spirit Phone is my person fav and his brodyquest song is a part of his Nature Tapes EP which has six other equally bizarre songs.
"Goosebumps", "Vivid Memories", and "As your father I expressly forbid it" are some good entry points to his music. He has a lot of songs which evoke or capitalize on childhood nostalgia in a new and interesting way, rather than just being memes. A lot of his original songs have a lot of thought put into them, and often if you listen closely you can learn about their obscure, interesting, and occasionally unsettling real-life inspirations. "Spiral of Ants", based on ant mills "Redesign Your Logo", based on the bizarre (and publicly available) design process documents behind Pepsi's hundred-million-dollar logo redesign. "Reaganomics", based on, well... One of my favorite things about his songs is, when listening through a track for the sixth or seventh time over as many weeks, I'll suddenly realize what the song was about the whole time. Spirit Phone in particular is amazing, and delves into the supernatural in a corny, ufology-is-real, grainy-90s-bigfoot-video sort of way. And yet, when you finally figure out their inspiration, they suddenly become less silly and more... sinister.
I first heard of Neil way back. Like WAY back in 2001 when he was still doing these bizarre music videos set to Japanese Pokemon songs like Animutation. He was barely even a teenager back then, and it was some real art house mindfuck material that was somewhere between Monty Python and an acid trip. The highest quality example of this was Earth Vs. Funk, the final work of this genre.
There was a decent sized group of people making animutations of varying quality all the way through 2012 and if you look deep enough, you can find a scant few still trying to make them today. Animutations are some of Neil's greatest artistic contributions in his entire time creating, despite him not even having invented the genre. I've worked on and off to try and preserve as many great, good and even merely decent animutations as I can in mp4 video format, so that when Flash dies it doesn't take this incredible genre with it.
Emmy Cicierega. I think she's worked on Gravity Falls and Ducktales. Also, Neil made a song to be used for the GF opening but wasn't used in the end. Mother. Fucking. Macy's. Sale.
"IN THE BEGINNING" > starts with like, Neil's *third* big hit, lol. Potter puppet pals predates ultimate showdown by two years, and both of them came after his first megahit, Animutations, which you didn't even bring up. Also you left out Windows 95 Tips and Tricks, What's Dylan Grillin?, The two video games he made, Ariel's legs, his more recent video project Guaranteed Video...You barely scratched the surface.
It's honestly really amazing how Cicierega managed to jump from trend to trend over the course of RUclips history, all without seeming like he was trying too hard to stay relevant. And (having not had access to Internet that wasn't dial-up until about 2011), I can't begin to comprehend how much he's modified and influenced the RUclips content landscape. Great short essay!
Not sure what Aubrey's experience is, but I know I've lived in the country since I was 15 and there was no high speed internet until a couple of years ago. No cable. There was only dial-up.
Shahyah Darioosh I meant Neil Cicerega has been around since before RUclips. Idk what's up with OP having dialup in 2011. They probably live up in the mountains/hills or out in the country where it's hard to get decent internet speeds.
You're killing me not mentioning Emily Cicierega - I followed her before I followed her brother, and she's a huuuuuge part of all of Potter Puppet Pals, as well as later cartoons like "Ariel Needs Legs." She's a spectacular artist and deserves her credit. Anyway thanks for mentioning the perfection that is Bustin'.
What's stunning is that you've barely scratched the surface. Before Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny he was creating animutations, which were a gigantic meme pre-RUclips.
Sean Riley He's credited as having created animutations as a genre by a lot of people. I have no idea if that's accurate, since that whole meme was a bit before my time, but still - what an incredible mind.
hey! ive never watched you until now. a good friend of mine who knew me for being completely infatuated with neil let me know about this video and i actually PRAISE you for giving neil this spotlight. i LOVE to know that people know him beyond wow wow, ultimate showdown, or ppp. hes such a talented guy and hes had a big impact on me ever since i was just 9 years old. seriously, viewers, if you havent already PLEASE check out lemon demon's discography (its a masterpiece!!) and all of the mashup work hes done. his impact on the internet is fucking insane and just the idea of who he is amazes me. hes a big inspiration and im so glad im alive the same time he is.
The crazy thing is that this only even gets Neil Cicierega's RUclips phase. Even before that he had a massive impact on flash animations in like 2001 and basically pioneered the dumb 'animutation' style of flash videos that were basically the standard from 02-05. Nine out of Ten sociopaths agree, you've gotta see HYAKUGOJYUUICHI.
I was surprised to find out how far back his work went. I found this flash animation called "Captain Lou Albano's Steady Descent into Madness" from all the way back to 2002 and, big shock, it was done by Cicierega as well. This man is pretty much a synonymous of the name "Internet".
I haven't thought about that site in years. To be back in 7th grade, playing Counter-Strike and linking people his Flash animations on ABS (using AIM, of course!) On one hand, I feel very unaccomplished with his internet resume at the same age, but at the same time, my parents didn't homeschool me and let me pursue any interest as long as it was constructive, as apparently his parents did. And he came out a total weirdo, like homeschooled kids do, but in a good way. A perfect way.
oh, this is cool! I've ALWAYS wanted to do a similar sort of project of basically making songs with similar chord progressions and musical motives and just slamming them up against each other to hear how they warp and change.
I was hoping you'd also talk about his less popular comedy sketches. They deserve more love, as does his fiends who are regular collaborators in those sketches. He's done a lot of different stuff over the years, and recently came out with a text based nostalgia game called monsterbreeder which is super fun.
Knew of all his work except Ultimate Showdown. I was so confident I wasn’t gonna be a “oh shit that was him?” person. I’ve been a Neil fan for a while so I felt a little superior. Then Ultimate Showdown started playing and I thought “Oh shit that was him??” You’ve humbled me, QuintonReviews.
Mashing “You Oughta Know”; a breakup song written about Uncle Joey from Full House; with the Full House theme is one of the many chefs kiss songs Neil has done.
"I'm marching along I'm doing it proudly It's leading me somewhere I hope it's not off a cliff" Honestly, some up-and-coming music artist needs to make a song with that as the chorus
sometimes i remember popular songs wrong because ive listened to the mouth trilogy more times than i can count. notably i always expect "love shack" to be mixed with the psycho theme
The guy pioneered the concept of using jpeg cutouts in flash aka Animutations when he was 13 and put them on Albinoblacksheep i understand this is what you described as a "Cliffnotes version of his career" but that's a pretty big cliffnote to exclude
I was so happy to see you were making this. I've always loved Neil's content, and Lemon Demon is one of my favorite bands. Considering you're my favorite RUclipsr at the moment, seeing this and learning you were a fellow fan absolutely made my day. I'm hoping this gives people more insight into the scale of Neil's impact on the internet, and that they can dig into stuff you didn't touch on in the video, like his tumblrs, personal music, and his other RUclips videos. Also you "singing" the first line of Ultimate Showdown was great.
I see animutation and ytp as separate art forms but I see the similarities definitely, especially as YTPs became more advanced with animation, chroma key, masking and so on. I guess what I'm tryna say is that pre-spadinner seems like it came from somewhere else TL;DR WMM =/= Flash
I love Neil's work, I grew up watching all his videos with my mom. He is one of my favorite musicians, he makes wonderful comedy sketches, and potter puppet pals was one of my favorite things to watch in childhood even though I didn't like Harry Potter. I still follow him, and while he doesn't post often, he never fails to make my day better.
The man, the meme, the legend. My buddy showed me him about a year ago, and then I later found that he was The ultimate showdown guy, and he just keeps churning stuff out. I fuckin love this man.
This has made me freak out so much, just the fact I've recently been hooked to his music, then to find out how much of my childhood and arguably where a bunch of my sense of humour comes from was from the same guy. This is a good video, thanks Quinton
About a year ago my friend introduced me to some stuff Neil did. I started listening to more of his stuff and then a couple of months ago I found out that my cousin is friends with Neil and they live in the same town, which is honestly one of the coolest things I've ever learned
Having watched a few of his mashups the last couple days, I wasn't sure how much I'd actually be surprised by. The MOMENT he starts singing "The Ultimate Showdown," I went "Wait - HE did that?" Out loud. Just like Quentin said I would.
When you said this video was sponsored by dollar shave club my heart skipped a beat because i thought you were going to get rid of your glorious beard.
i found him from recommendations for his album Spirit Phone (which is amazing you should listen to it) and after i found it he basically laid the foundation for my childhood internet escapades ive been in love ever since LMAO
Neil Circierega made me think you could combine any two songs together and it’d sound good Example: T.I.M.E. Hans Volter Time and YMCA Somehow it actually sounds good
I love this man, I really liked They Might Be Giants and after listening to all of their best songs, I wanted more and then I found Neil and Lemon Demon, and he's essentially the modern version of TMBG
Never before have I seen a recommended video show up in my feed, and garner that one additional view and like combination as has this video. Cicierega is truly an under appreciated artist, for various reasons.
If there was a bunch of famous people at the end of the world and you had to pick a team to trust with your life, I would pick Neil Cicierega in a heartbeat and our team would win. Everyone would be preoccupied with how amazing he is that we could easily defeat them in their distraction. Neil will become the king of the earth

@@att3r1 do keep in mind that Neil was homeschooled from fourth grade on, and his father was a computer programmer!! doing weird internet projects WAS his schooling so it makes sense he had more time to make ultimate showdown and the like
This was a good summary and analyzation of Neil Cicierega's work. He was definitely one of the people who shaped the early internet. 👍
Do not cite the deep magic to me, Witch. I was there when it was written.

wow, i never knew that the guy who made ultimate showdown also made brodyquest...AND is also a "soundclown" masher
this guy is freaking amazing lol
He's a lot of things tbf. You should check out his proper music, his newest album Spirit Phone is my person fav and his brodyquest song is a part of his Nature Tapes EP which has six other equally bizarre songs.
He just doesn't flaunt it ("MAKE SURE TO SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON AND SUBSCRIBE BELOW ALSO MERCH LINK IN BIO") which is why I love him so much.
THE SoundClown masher
and also two trucks having sex lol
he also made AC/VC. this man is the originator of every music based meme in existence.
WOAH
He made "Super hey ya" aswell.
Word Disassociation is perhaps Neil's most brilliant, yet underrated work.
This is one of my favorites!

I love Word Disassociation. It's brilliant. Amnesia Was Her Name is another good one, as well as the Pointless Machine (?).

IKR??
It's so good.
eh, javabean is better
Lemon Demon in general
"Goosebumps",
"Vivid Memories",
and "As your father I expressly forbid it"
are some good entry points to his music.
"Spiral of Ants", based on ant mills
"Redesign Your Logo", based on the bizarre (and publicly available) design process documents behind Pepsi's hundred-million-dollar logo redesign.

Yeah I was kinda disappointed this video didn't go even further back. His animutation stuff was a true original meme.
My guy, Neil never made anything merely *like* Animutation. Neil is the originator of the style. Barely a teenager and he was already a cultural icon.
I thought Wizard Power was his last animutation.
Wizard Power was his curtain call. Animutation basically died about 9 months later. I still love it.
Neil is great, I fucking love his music!
His sister’s art is also awesome and has been long time inspo for me
Ohh! Who's his sister? I need to look this up immediately!!
Emmy Cicierega. I think she's worked on Gravity Falls and Ducktales. Also, Neil made a song to be used for the GF opening but wasn't used in the end. Mother. Fucking. Macy's. Sale.
his music is so gooooooood

Neil: *wakes up in cold sweat in the middle of the night*
"that's it!"
Lol true
"IN THE BEGINNING" > starts with like, Neil's *third* big hit, lol.
Potter puppet pals predates ultimate showdown by two years, and both of them came after his first megahit, Animutations, which you didn't even bring up.
Also you left out Windows 95 Tips and Tricks, What's Dylan Grillin?, The two video games he made, Ariel's legs, his more recent video project Guaranteed Video...You barely scratched the surface.
I was gonna say... that animutation with the Pee-Wee and Harry Potter heads, that's the thing I actually know him for.
lol i was gonna bring up animutations too. good shout
I mean, no.
Animutations in no way was as big a hit as PPP or Ultimate Showdown.
@@caesarin0 It was probably just as influential in its own way though. It created a whole genre of Internet video.
Two trucks..........
I really want to know about the dial-up thing. question: how? Why?
Not sure what Aubrey's experience is, but I know I've lived in the country since I was 15 and there was no high speed internet until a couple of years ago. No cable. There was only dial-up.
He's been around since before RUclips, yo. Newgrounds and Albino Blacksheep are where he got his start.
Samantha Port ok, that makes a lot more sense, but still, 2011? Dang.
I've always looked at "Bustin'" as "Ghostbusters" with a pretty bad concussion.
Bustin makes me feel good!

hey! ive never watched you until now. a good friend of mine who knew me for being completely infatuated with neil let me know about this video and i actually PRAISE you for giving neil this spotlight. i LOVE to know that people know him beyond wow wow, ultimate showdown, or ppp. hes such a talented guy and hes had a big impact on me ever since i was just 9 years old. seriously, viewers, if you havent already PLEASE check out lemon demon's discography (its a masterpiece!!) and all of the mashup work hes done. his impact on the internet is fucking insane and just the idea of who he is amazes me. hes a big inspiration and im so glad im alive the same time he is.
Obviously the objectively best Niel Cicierga's song is "When He Died"
that song is honestly so awesome. practically gave me chills
You’re at the Party or Fine is Neil’s best song

oh, this is cool! I've ALWAYS wanted to do a similar sort of project of basically making songs with similar chord progressions and musical motives and just slamming them up against each other to hear how they warp and change.

You skipped over a whole huge part of Neil’s early viral recognition - hyakugojuichii and animutations
Ah, Newgrounds. The good old days. I've watched Neil much back in the day, he was truly a legend, at least to me.
I can't tell if your profile is Ruby Rosr or not

Ruby Rose, or the profile picture? I was referring to the protagonist of the cartoon, RWBY, myself.
It *is* Nico Yazawa from precisely; Love Live.

... Even as someone who has already had many "Wait Neil did THAT?" moments, you gave me more of them.
I was hoping you'd also talk about his less popular comedy sketches. They deserve more love, as does his fiends who are regular collaborators in those sketches. Knew of all his work except Ultimate Showdown. I was so confident I wasn’t gonna be a “oh shit that was him?” person. I’ve been a Neil fan for a while so I felt a little superior. Then Ultimate Showdown started playing and I thought “Oh shit that was him??”
You’ve humbled me, QuintonReviews.
Mashing “You Oughta Know”; a breakup song written about Uncle Joey from Full House; with the Full House theme is one of the many chefs kiss songs Neil has done.
long live neil, the often unsung face of the internet
MahBucket I'd argue he's the often sung face of the internet.
"I'm marching along
I'm doing it proudly
It's leading me somewhere
I hope it's not off a cliff"
Honestly, some up-and-coming music artist needs to make a song with that as the chorus
Yes. Bonus points if it's Neil Cicierega.
sometimes i remember popular songs wrong because ive listened to the mouth trilogy more times than i can count. notably i always expect "love shack" to be mixed with the psycho theme
Mouth Moods was the best album I heard in 2017.
It's a legit masterpiece.
The guy pioneered the concept of using jpeg cutouts in flash aka Animutations when he was 13 and put them on Albinoblacksheep i understand this is what you described as a "Cliffnotes version of his career" but that's a pretty big cliffnote to exclude
Niel was just a one hit wonder like a thousand times
I was so happy to see you were making this. I've always loved Neil's content, and Lemon Demon is one of my favorite bands. Considering you're my favorite RUclipsr at the moment, seeing this and learning you were a fellow fan absolutely made my day. I'm hoping this gives people more insight into the scale of Neil's impact on the internet, and that they can dig into stuff you didn't touch on in the video, like his tumblrs, personal music, and his other RUclips videos.
Also you "singing" the first line of Ultimate Showdown was great.
I always thought his name was a Greek curse. Glad this video cleared that up
hey i love your videos
"Wndrwll" is the best piece of artistic expression ever conceived of by any species in existence and nothing will ever change my mind about that.
Gungywamp yeah too bad it keeps on getting taken down for copyright reasons (even though it’s fair use)
No mention of Trapezoid/Deporitaz, his New Kids on the Rock days, animutation, or his sketches (mainly Slumber Party).
This man has done everything.
Animutation borderline invented YTP so it's probably the biggest overlook.
I see animutation and ytp as separate art forms but I see the similarities definitely, especially as YTPs became more advanced with animation, chroma key, masking and so on. I guess what I'm tryna say is that pre-spadinner seems like it came from somewhere else
TL;DR WMM =/= Flash
Technically Ultimate Showdown was Trapezoid.
when people are saying reupload but you never saw this video the first time and it’s a happy surprise
Nobody gonna talk about Wow Wow? Its seriously magnificent honestly. I MF LOVE IT
are we not gonna talk about Spirit Phone?
When you said this video was sponsored by dollar shave club my heart skipped a beat because i thought you were going to get rid of your glorious beard.
I wouldn't be surprised if Neil was the one behind something like the syncing up of Dark Side of the Moon to the Wizard of Oz
i found him from recommendations for his album Spirit Phone (which is amazing you should listen to it) and after i found it he basically laid the foundation for my childhood internet escapades ive been in love ever since LMAO
