I’m surprised by the raw amount of comments here saying they never heard of him. The FGC is quite a bubble I suppose. But yeah, the FGC is niche. You can’t compare FGC views against all of RUclips, you have to gauge the popularity in comparison to the total community. Just imo something to consider.
A quick clarification about what you said arounf 11:38 about Mike Ross leaving because gameplays not going his way: actually his frustration was with the game itself, Streer Fighter 5 did a lot of things that didn't float well with the community, especially with long time players like them, for starters the game got rid of long crazy impossible combos in favor of more stream lined ones, back on SF4 linking moves could only be done within one frame (1 frame links, a 1/60 second to input the next move), meaning even the simplest combo was a feat, the trade-of being that long "infinite" combos were posible ONLY if you were like stupid awesome at the game, for SF5 Capcom noted that a lot of players got into the game to try and do those long combos and dropped the game harder than a bag of bricks when they realized how much work that meant, so they "fixed it" by changing the time you have to link moves to 3 frames (3/60 of a second) wich doesn't sound so much better until you play it, most people will feel the input window to be longer than it actually is because the brain is awesome like that, so everyone was doing this impresively long looking combos but in reality those combos were almost guaranteed to come out and boringly linear, in order to "balance it" now you had a lot less freedome, like you would actually see your character punch or kick the oponent but if it wasn't programed to be a part of the combo as the designers wanted, it just wouldn't connect, so everyone was doing the exact same combo as you, and to top it off in Capcom's e-sport centric focus, in order to keep the Meta always moving and guessing they tried to regularly buff characters giving more attention to under used ones, a good idea on paper until it became a game of playing favorites, the tier list was always changing for the wrong reasons, often because the fixes meant making certain moves for a character bullshit while killing off abilities for other charachters, they used to say the actuall reward for wining a tournament was to get your character nerfed, and while for us casually competitive players meant the online was anoying and would usually get flooded by Capcom's favorite of the week, for pros it meant there was no actuall tier liest, frame data didn't last for long and learning a character felt like a waste of time when it could get destroyed on the next patch, add all of those things together and the real reason Mike Ross left was because it got frustrated with the new e-sport culture Capcom tried to build off with SF5 and was a vocal advocate against e-sport culture in fighting games when other games tried to follow in Capcom's foot steps, now days the balancing and the way Capcom handles DLC and so in SF5 has gone a bit better and thank god Onochi (SF5's original director) is forever gone, but it is too late.

I knew Gootecks back around 2010. He is such a different person today. I think his story is similar to a lot of the people he found himself associating with as of late. These people once were full of hopes and dreams in their youth and for whatever reasons, their lives never became what they thought it should be. Their egos never allowed them to reconcile this and the only way to validate their existence was not to admit that they were wrong but to instead believe everyone else is wrong. He was a fun guy back in the day and it's sad to see him like this. I hope he gets the help he needs and can turn his life around.

Man, I was a follower of Excellent Adventures during its golden years, the Gootecks and Mike Ross combo was amazing. I remember actually meeting Gootecks back during 2017 at E3, even got my hat signed by him, and even by then he seemed tired, broken, and self-loathing, it was pretty sad.
Same tho, I remember tuning in for the 2012 holiday special ahahah. And yeah, it was clear in all the lead up to the end that there was rough shit going on behind the scenes. Constant hiatuses and 'Final Episodes' only to come back a year later, Gootecks seemed way more interested in starting esports clubs and being vaguely predatory about (young) women than he did actually playing the game.

Here's an update regarding Twitch's removal of PogChamp: Since PogChamp, Pog, Poggers, etc is ingrained in Twitch culture at this point, rather than outright remove PogChamp, Twitch has sought to replace it. Starting today (1/8/21), they are, for a time, changing the PogChamp emote every 24hrs, seemingly until they come up with a permanent replacement. The first is the streamer Unroolie, who was possibly the first to tweet a photo of themselves making the Pog expression and suggesting Twitch use their face instead. I'm glad the source of the PogChamp name is such a deep reference, since it made it easy to divorce Gootecks entirely from the meme.

Mental health is overlooked in the USA. I think more funding and acceptance is desperately needed. A lot of these people have mental health issues and need professional help.
As someone with a mental illness, I disagree. Some of these people are just stupid. You don't have to be mentally ill to believe in stupid things. On the same note, people can be mentally ill and still be perfectly reasonable and rational. I do agree that the U.S needs to increase it's acceptance of mental illness and make treatment more accessible. Some of these people, as you said, may be suffering from mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders, paranoia, delusions, etc. So I guess I sort of agree?
While I, someone with mental illness, agree the US really needs better mental health help and acceptance. As an FGC member and a long fan of Mike Ross and Gootecks excellent adventures series watching his slow decent into madness was heart breaking. I have watched every single episode of excellent adventures and its still to this day some of the best fighting game content out there.

Feels weird being part of the small camp in here that knows of Gootecks far more vividly than PogChamp. Everytime I saw that Emote it always surprised me that the guy I watched make Excellent Adventures for years had accidentally produced something that outgrew him and was being used by a vast number of people who didn't even know a single thing about the man or his origins. Not that this is entirely a unique perspective, but I'm not very privvy with Internet culture and it's developements, so it's rare that I'd ever be part of the well informed party for these types of videos that have been flying around over these last few years of RUclips And by the way Quinton, the main appeal of Excellent Adventures and what brought it tons of attention in the FGC in particular was that it was offline competitors taking their abilities to the online scene and recording the matches for everyone to see. Back then online players were considered a joke, and offline settings were the only credible places to play the game. This stigma meant pretty much all these incredibly skilled players that had been getting results for years never played online, and we rarely ever got to see these two groups clash. So when Mike and Gootecks decided to jump online, we finally got to see just how good they compared to the online crowd. Even though it pretty much confirmed that these offline players were stronger, it was entertaining to see the skill gap in action finally. The average online player got a chance to play these big deal tournament placers, and when some online players started taking games off the boys, even though things like the connection could be used as an excuse, it was encouraging to see that players that only had online as an option could still get good enough to beat the offline talent in any capacity. All in all, not only did Excellent Adventures ease up on the stigma of fighting games online being a useless commodity, but it also gave people an opportunity to make a name for themselves by beating the alreadly established talent, and some of them became quite popular, even meme'd regularly in the comments. It's pretty commonplace now, but tournament winners weren't bred online, and that show was the first glimpse into the world that's produced so many strong players and 1st placers now, who have humble beginnings of starting off online and getting better in that medium, where a world without that show might've discouraged them from even trying.
Not gonna say I read all of that but I was watching excellent adventures way before twitch and POG became popular. It was always so mind boggling crazy to me that Gooteks never jumped on the opportunity to grow his brand with The POGGERS emote.. he could’ve literally just became a twitch streamer claimed the POGGERS username and made A LOT of money.. It’s absolutely insane... instead he decides to become some Street fighter 4 teacher?? Wtf? Back then I knew something about this guys decisions were off besides devoting way too much of their life to SF4. I really do hope for the best with this guy I feel like his life is missing a lot of balance and as a result it’s in shambles
It honestly breaks my heart to see what Gootecks turned into, I remember devouring every episode of Excellent Adventures and even included the Mike Ross pop-off in a presentation on eSports last semester. Been watching Mike play Dota 2 and he's still pretty much the same charismatic guy but man, Gootecks sure went down an awful path.
Excellent adventures was the show that really good me into fighting games. The Gootecks and Mike Ross chemistry simply can't be replicated, although the episodes of Capcom Pro Talk are still worth a watch!

The fighting game community aside of Smash bros is pretty small compared to gaming as a whole so they were a relatively well known duo within the FGC. Following the falling out between the two we saw the shift of Gootecks toward his conspiracy theory ideals and kind of left him by the wayside. In my opinion it's kind of saddening that he'll only be remembered as the "Poggers" guy when he meant so much more to people in the FGC before he, you know, kinda went crazy

But yeah, the FGC is niche. You can’t compare FGC views against all of RUclips, you have to gauge the popularity in comparison to the total community. Just imo something to consider.
A quick clarification about what you said arounf 11:38 about Mike Ross leaving because gameplays not going his way: actually his frustration was with the game itself, Streer Fighter 5 did a lot of things that didn't float well with the community, especially with long time players like them, for starters the game got rid of long crazy impossible combos in favor of more stream lined ones, back on SF4 linking moves could only be done within one frame (1 frame links, a 1/60 second to input the next move), meaning even the simplest combo was a feat, the trade-of being that long "infinite" combos were posible ONLY if you were like stupid awesome at the game, for SF5 Capcom noted that a lot of players got into the game to try and do those long combos and dropped the game harder than a bag of bricks when they realized how much work that meant, so they "fixed it" by changing the time you have to link moves to 3 frames (3/60 of a second) wich doesn't sound so much better until you play it, most people will feel the input window to be longer than it actually is because the brain is awesome like that, so everyone was doing this impresively long looking combos but in reality those combos were almost guaranteed to come out and boringly linear, in order to "balance it" now you had a lot less freedome, like you would actually see your character punch or kick the oponent but if it wasn't programed to be a part of the combo as the designers wanted, it just wouldn't connect, so everyone was doing the exact same combo as you, and to top it off in Capcom's e-sport centric focus, in order to keep the Meta always moving and guessing they tried to regularly buff characters giving more attention to under used ones, a good idea on paper until it became a game of playing favorites, the tier list was always changing for the wrong reasons, often because the fixes meant making certain moves for a character bullshit while killing off abilities for other charachters, they used to say the actuall reward for wining a tournament was to get your character nerfed, and while for us casually competitive players meant the online was anoying and would usually get flooded by Capcom's favorite of the week, for pros it meant there was no actuall tier liest, frame data didn't last for long and learning a character felt like a waste of time when it could get destroyed on the next patch, add all of those things together and the real reason Mike Ross left was because it got frustrated with the new e-sport culture Capcom tried to build off with SF5 and was a vocal advocate against e-sport culture in fighting games when other games tried to follow in Capcom's foot steps, now days the balancing and the way Capcom handles DLC and so in SF5 has gone a bit better and thank god Onochi (SF5's original director) is forever gone, but it is too late.

I knew Gootecks back around 2010. He is such a different person today. I think his story is similar to a lot of the people he found himself associating with as of late. These people once were full of hopes and dreams in their youth and for whatever reasons, their lives never became what they thought it should be. Their egos never allowed them to reconcile this and the only way to validate their existence was not to admit that they were wrong but to instead believe everyone else is wrong. He was a fun guy back in the day and it's sad to see him like this. I hope he gets the help he needs and can turn his life around.

Fuck...I loved Mike Ross and Gootecks in Excellent Adventures/cross counter etc. Watched that shit religiously. This actually really saddens me. I watched it while I had to deal with some really dark shit and was in a terrible place. It made me feel better a little bit.
Also, his personality somewhere took a sharp turn into weirdChamp territory. As a former addict myself, who used partying to normalize my substance-use, my gut tells me that he got heavy into party drugs and lost his marbles in the process.
Capcom Pro Talk was great too. Floe was REALLY entertaining. It's a shame that Mike bounced from that, too.

Man, I was a follower of Excellent Adventures during its golden years, the Gootecks and Mike Ross combo was amazing.
I remember actually meeting Gootecks back during 2017 at E3, even got my hat signed by him, and even by then he seemed tired, broken, and self-loathing, it was pretty sad.
Same tho, I remember tuning in for the 2012 holiday special ahahah. And yeah, it was clear in all the lead up to the end that there was rough shit going on behind the scenes. Constant hiatuses and 'Final Episodes' only to come back a year later, Gootecks seemed way more interested in starting esports clubs and being vaguely predatory about (young) women than he did actually playing the game.

Here's an update regarding Twitch's removal of PogChamp: Since PogChamp, Pog, Poggers, etc is ingrained in Twitch culture at this point, rather than outright remove PogChamp, Twitch has sought to replace it. Starting today (1/8/21), they are, for a time, changing the PogChamp emote every 24hrs, seemingly until they come up with a permanent replacement. The first is the streamer Unroolie, who was possibly the first to tweet a photo of themselves making the Pog expression and suggesting Twitch use their face instead. I'm glad the source of the PogChamp name is such a deep reference, since it made it easy to divorce Gootecks entirely from the meme.

Mental health is overlooked in the USA. I think more funding and acceptance is desperately needed. A lot of these people have mental health issues and need professional help.
As someone with a mental illness, I disagree. Some of these people are just stupid. You don't have to be mentally ill to believe in stupid things. On the same note, people can be mentally ill and still be perfectly reasonable and rational. I do agree that the U.S needs to increase it's acceptance of mental illness and make treatment more accessible. Some of these people, as you said, may be suffering from mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders, paranoia, delusions, etc. So I guess I sort of agree?
While I, someone with mental illness, agree the US really needs better mental health help and acceptance. I don’t think you should see this and go “He’s got mental health problems” because even though it’s possible he does , I think he’s just a *huge* stupid asshole. Some people just are. It’s not always mental issues. So like the commenter above, I agree but also don’t in a way I guess

Hearing Mr. Quinton of QuintonReviews say the word “homestuck” has aged me many years.
Feels weird being part of the small camp in here that knows of Gootecks far more vividly than PogChamp. Everytime I saw that Emote it always surprised me that the guy I watched make Excellent Adventures for years had accidentally produced something that outgrew him and was being used by a vast number of people who didn't even know a single thing about the man or his origins. Not that this is entirely a unique perspective, but I'm not very privvy with Internet culture and it's developements, so it's rare that I'd ever be part of the well informed party for these types of videos that have been flying around over these last few years of RUclips
And by the way Quinton, the main appeal of Excellent Adventures and what brought it tons of attention in the FGC in particular was that it was offline competitors taking their abilities to the online scene and recording the matches for everyone to see. Back then online players were considered a joke, and offline settings were the only credible places to play the game. This stigma meant pretty much all these incredibly skilled players that had been getting results for years never played online, and we rarely ever got to see these two groups clash. So when Mike and Gootecks decided to jump online, we finally got to see just how good they compared to the online crowd. Even though it pretty much confirmed that these offline players were stronger, it was entertaining to see the skill gap in action finally. The average online player got a chance to play these big deal tournament placers, and when some online players started taking games off the boys, even though things like the connection could be used as an excuse, it was encouraging to see that players that only had online as an option could still get good enough to beat the offline talent in any capacity.
All in all, not only did Excellent Adventures ease up on the stigma of fighting games online being a useless commodity, but it also gave people an opportunity to make a name for themselves by beating the alreadly established talent, and some of them became quite popular, even meme'd regularly in the comments. It's pretty commonplace now, but tournament winners weren't bred online, and that show was the first glimpse into the world that's produced so many strong players and 1st placers now, who have humble beginnings of starting off online and getting better in that medium, where a world without that show might've discouraged them from even trying.

It honestly breaks my heart to see what Gootecks turned into, I remember devouring every episode of Excellent Adventures and even included the Mike Ross pop-off in a presentation on eSports last semester. Been watching Mike play Dota 2 and he's still pretty much the same charismatic guy but man, Gootecks sure went down an awful path.

Excellent adventures was the show that really good me into fighting games. The Gootecks and Mike Ross chemistry simply can't be replicated, although the episodes of Capcom Pro Talk are still worth a watch!

He still remained a household name in the FGC, the FGC just happens to be a relatively niche community and his Poggers "fame" became much, much larger than that. I used to watch the Excellent Adventures of Gootecks and Mike Ross every week. The fighting game community aside of Smash bros is pretty small compared to gaming as a whole so they were a relatively well known duo within the FGC. Following the falling out between the two we saw the shift of Gootecks toward his conspiracy theory ideals and kind of left him by the wayside. In my opinion it's kind of saddening that he'll only be remembered as the "Poggers" guy when he meant so much more to people in the FGC before he, you know, kinda went crazy
