I am a "marathon" knitter & am developing worsening thumb arthritis, probably aggravated by the death grip with which I hold my work - pinching is much too mild a word to describe the hold! I just signed up for the wait list for your 30 day thumb program & have subscribed to your channel. Thanks for all the great info!
Sounds great! After a fall, my wrist slammed down on the floor. Doctor's only answer was cortizone injection. I really really want to crochet again. Hope you can help Thank you
I am wondering what that means for players of string instruments - we are pinching with our left thumbs all the time. Are there compensating exercises? Could you please elaborate on this? Considering the three types of pinches you mention (tip pinch, key pinch, 3 point pinch), which is preferable?
I do aromatherapy massage and reflexology but only 1 per week And I woke up from sleeping and couldn’t move my thumb was in so much pain (trigger thumb) And still is painful I can’t unscrew lids or pinch or even rub cream into my own feet ? The pain is at the inside base of my thumb Any ideas please ? Didn’t think I could wake up just like this It also moves into other thumb sometimes but not for long I have had this now about 6 weeks ? What is it ? 😊
Good one! Not that I have been using a ball or otherwise and pinching, but that motion definitely causes pain for me and being warned not to start using a ball that way is good info.
Do you have any insights regarding playing the guitar? I’ve been playing since the mid-70s, and have always been careful with my hand/arm position to prevent carpal-tunnel syndrome which is common with poor technique. But just in the last month or so (age 77), I’ve developed this type of arthritis and also “trigger thumb” for about a year previously. So far, been using wrist brace, anti-inflammatory drugs, and exercise such as you recommend.
This video is really helpful and I will subscribe. I do wish it did not take until 5:51 to get past what *not* to do and start with what you should do.
Thanks so much for all your helpful videos! I broke my wrist, both distal and ulna and did not have surgery. Therefore I am dealing with the resulting deformity. I developed carpal tunnel and had surgery for that. Because of the deformity I don’t have the normal extension of my thumb which was arthritic before the wrist injury. Will the program still work for me? I do have an arthritic thumb in my other hand too. Btw I was given cortisone shots in both thumbs at time of the carpal tunnel surgery, which was 3.5 weeks ago. Thanks so much for all you do, it’s invaluable to so many!❤
Michelle, thanks as always and I really need some help here. Though I don't do those pinching exercises per se, I AM doing the same movement pretty much all day long in many of my daily tasks...hundreds of different grips, grabs, squeezes and torques each day, most of them, quite automatic or unconscious. Your workshop is full. What to do? My basal thumb joints are always on fire.
When your osteopathic surgeon refers you to pain management for surgery acute management before doing surgery might indicate that her his technique results in chronic pain management results..usually onlt 4 % or less ever become difficult
@@VirtualHandCare My pleasure. I'm 41 and new to arthiritis in general and specifically tackling it in my thumb base. After the steroid shot in the joint, felt it was cured. Two weeks later and fews days after the shot the pain and weakness returned. So I stopped your strengthening exercises. Any advice what to do next? Thank you Ironically, my strength used to be my grip and hands, arms and arm wrestling weight lifting, so no clue where this arthirits came from
So, the worst exercise is playing guitar. 😢😢😢 I also have more of a hitchhiker's thumb, which place greater stress on the CMC. (I look forward to your other videos to hopefully continue to play guitar.)
I am now post-thumb (arthoplasty) surgery. Cast is off and I have just started therapy. They have me pinching. Is this different than the pre-surgery exercises you are showing here?
my saxophone teacher says to hold the instrument as though I were holding a pint glass, but my right thumb is really hurting. I don't know if it's arthritis or repetitive stress. The instrument falls to the left and I have to overcorrect it's weight. Any suggestions? Maybe a brace?
I play classical/flamenco guitar and my thumb arthritis has been making it harder to play. What is the solution without having to give up what I love to do?

Can i get same movement after surgery? I need answer desperately
Really appreciating your thumb videos, so thank you so much! But $97 for your 30 Day Thumbs arthritis program you plug at the end of the video??? That's WAAAY out of my price range. 😢
Hi, Thank you for sharing your knowledge, my issue is that I was doing bicep curls with a straight barbell which I later learned I shouldn't have because it can cause wrist injuries, do you have any knowledge of how to treat pain caused by this type of injury where the pisiform is bigger than it was before and it painful when I try to exercise again after 2 months of having the injury, flexibility is good though it's just with weight training that I have pain. Thanks
Wonder what you think of the Sarah trail for patients with RA and hand pain (including the thumb). This is one of the largest scale studies on RA and hand interventions and includes pinching as one of the the exercises.
I am familiar with that study. I believe there was only 1 pinching exercise amongst many others. I'm sure the pts were instructed on proper technique since they were under the guidance of physiotherapists. It helps further support the important role exericse plays in RA management.
Hello I have RA and OA and just had FAILED tendon realignment for my FIRST MIDDLE RING AND PINKY of right hand 09/23. Dr is going in this week and try again with maybe a borrowed tendon from forearm to create a slip for my middle finger tendon to prevent having to do an unnecessary joint replacement I'm only 50. I am a former RN. Could you point me to the Sarah trail you referred I'm curious with maybe I can practice or maybe help with my journey of pain management. Thank you ❤ I would like to read it at least.
I need surgery on both thumbs!!! Lol don’t want the surgeries. Ohhhh mmmmm Gggggg!!! This helped me out soooo much!!! Very much appreciated, thank you!!!
It depends on the position of your thumb, how much force, length of time, etc...it could aggravate it. But I don't know if I'd go as far as saying 'bad'.
Good advice. My trouble as others is said to be a lump that grows on tendon that blocks hole in joint tendon goes through - resulting in "clicking thumb" of joint. So you click in you have movement in toward palm but not up. You have to {pain} click thumb in open position then you can arch thumb open but very little strength moving in and can only go in half way - you have to click into inner position. It comes and goes and i notice water in diet makes difference. I think it can be healed naturally as it got there naturally - which as you would know is the best way of healing. How hard should the ball be? Soft and squishy or is something harder like a tennis ball ok? What about trigger hand grippers?
Firm like a tennis ball.
