Wow, this is the best self help video I have ever seen! Your professional, easy manner was much appreciated. I have severe thumb pain and the tennis ball thing really helped! Just waiting on the super duper tape now…. Thanks for the video!!
Thanks! Holding a 200 gm smartphone for 2 hours watching a movie, and after few months I have this pain at the base of my left thumb! Earlier phones were lighter with 3-4G. The 5 g phones with 4000 or larger mAh batteries caused this new problem!
I’ve had pain in my lower thumb for many weeks after landing badly on my hand. I came across your video.. and I didn’t have a tennis ball to hand m, but I pressed the fatty part of my palm onto a the ball of a back massager I had - and the pain is almost gone after one try! I hope it gets 100% better. Thank you!

(As such, these exercises and taping instructions are especially helpful tonight, when one of my MCPs is recovering from yesterday’s busy MT schedule) Again, thanks!!!
Thank you for all your tips. I’ve learned an awful lot from your videos and practice many of the mobility exercises and advice you so generously share. As an aside, I very much appreciate the easygoing, non self aggrandising manner which you display also.
Very helpful, thank you! Easy to follow instructions. I have used Rock Tape on my knees off and on for a long time, with a great deal of pain control, so will definitely try the "drumstick" method. Glad to have found your videos.
I have just come across your video and i'm pleased that i have. I have Osteoarthritis over many parts of my body and i take a lot of medication for it, however it doesn't seem to help at all with both of my thumb joints and a specialist is now talking about removing the thumb joints but said that i will still have pain! Nobody has ever mentioned exercises or taping of either my thumb and wrist joints. I am definitely ready to give this a go as it is so debilitating to have chronic pain especially in your hands. Thank you so much for the information and i will come back to you to let you know if it helped. Shirley from the UK.
Ironically my gardening career seems to have damaged my thumb. Weeding every day holding the trowel is now agony hoping this advice works as I really want to get back out there. Thanks

This is a great post. I have what the orthopedic doc called CMC Arlthritis, a very common location of arthritis. I'm a retired orchestra teacher and I think the pinching of my right hand, tuning thousands of violins was the nail in my coffin! My primary care doc called it tendinitis and prescribed motrin. Ugh. A year later an orthopedic triage doc took an xray and immediately diagnosed it as CMC arthritis. He gave me a steroid injection. The pain relief lasted about 2 weeks. I've not had another injection. I purchased a "push" brace which amazingly helps the pain by keeping the joint in tight. I'm a pianist and can play even while wearing the brace. But, I'm thinking it's only delaying the inevitable- surgery where they remove the trapezius bone. That option honestly scares me. This video presents the idea of adjusting the shape of the palm by stretching the muscles and flattening the palm. I've performed the first two exercises on this video for 2 days and already am sensing some relief. I have 2 questions: 1. Is it possible that the pain is mostly from my palm changing it's shape, and if I can return the shape to it's original flat shape, the pain will subside? 2. I haven't tried the third idea in this video, that of taping the joint as you've demonstrated. Will that serve my joint as my "Push" brace and relieve even more pain? Thanks so much.
I'm so glad you're getting some relief for this! Unfortunately, without a physical examination, I am not able to say what is causing/ contributing to your pain. Properly applied Rock Tape can help increase stability around a joint and provide some pain relief too - It's a really useful strategy.
My mother is near to 70 age. She have a pain in thumb lower side due to fell down. Doctor suggested her to wear thumb splint. My mother tried it yesterday. But I think her vains are so weak that couldn't bear tightness and thumb turned into blue. Means blood circulation due to tightness was not working properly. And doctor advised her that her thumb should be straight every time. What to do. Please suggest
Thank you for the recommendations, I will try it. For those living in Romania, I can recommend the Depanten gel. I used it, and my bump on the leg decreased. It has a pleasant cooling effect.
Hi, I have pain in both areas of the thumb. I also have "squaring" on my right hand so it's progressed pretty far. Can this 3 stage plan help someone who is in the advanced stages? I'm going to buy some rock tape today and try the first, easier taping strategy on my hand. You do a really good job of explaining how to do everything!!
Thanks for your kind words! Without an examination, it would be difficult to provide an accurate prognosis. However, almost everyone can improve their situation with a few simple daily practices performed consistently over time.
Thank you for these recommendations. I do have CMC joint pain in both hands with dx osteoarthritis and bone spurs. I did get a steroid injection that failed. I do wear a brace. I have been referred to a hand surgeon. I work as a cashier. My pain didn't really start until I started this position. With that all said, I tried the exercises you suggested. This made the pain worse after the first attempt. Is this normal? Should I continue doing the exercises?
I was so happy to come across your video. Two questions… How often do you do the tennis ball and wall exercises? And I am assuming you can perform these two exercises while the thumb is taped, correct?
I watched the interesting video. I am 64+ Years age. About 4 months back I started feeling pain in lower part of thumbs of both my hands during opening or closing of bottle cover by rotation. Even during putting eye drops when I press little tiny plastic bottle by my thumb and my forefinger, I feel pain at root of my thumb. I had also started feeling pain below inner ankles of both of my feet around same time about 4 months back. I had started watching your video primarily for thumb. But mentioned ankles problem also for wider perspective. Will these exercises be helpful Or Do I need to see any other video also, of yours in addition to this video?
The strategies here could be very helpful for you. However, the 4 month time frame is what stands out here. I would be very interested in what happened or what changed ~ 4 months ago.
Super helpful! I am going for a world record in a form of push-ups so I will be using this. Is it beneficial to apply both strapping methods at once? I am experiencing a little tension in both areas.
Good question. From a systematic review on the subject: "...there was no definitive evidence to support use of dimethyl sulphoxide and methylsulphonylmethane in treatment of osteoarthritis." www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK75771/
@@painfixprotocol in this case DMSO should be used as super solvent /Delivery agent/ ... it should be mixed with something else . Possible with Cortisone.
You mentioned "Degenerative non-inflammatory osteoarthritis of the thumb". Isn't all osteoarthritis inflammatory...especially during a flare up? Or did you mean that these exercises are for osteoarthritis but not rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune types? Good exercises here. My basal thumb arthritis was following trauma, a heavy fall on both hands, pain developed a couple of weeks later and progressed from there. X-ray just showed moderate arthritic changes cmc and stt joints. That was over 5 years ago. I am a pianist so surgery of the hand terrifies me. If I went ahead with surgery it would have to be the least invasive procedure. I will try these exercises, I am having a flare up at the moment following lots of work and activities involving gripping. Hopefully these exercises will help somewhat.
Good question. You are correct that these exercises are specifically for osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is non-inflammatory and it differs significantly from the inflammatory arthritides (like Rheumatoid or Psoriatic - autoimmune-related). The recommendations for those conditions are different. I like these exercises, they help me alot! I have a question. The reason for these exercises is to push the muscle from lower thumb outwards to prevent it from pushing inwards. The two thumb braces that I have tried pushes the hand along with the thumb muscle inwards. Are these braces not good?
So glad this video was helpful for you, Jason! There are situations where a brace like that may be helpful and appropriate. But the ultimate goal should be restore normal structure & function.
Thank you Doc! I have bad pain in the right thumb joint near the wrist, but it is closer to the inside of the fatty part of the hand. It is always sharp as hell and gets very restrictive with what I can do. Thumb braces don't seem to help. Adduction is hard to do and often causes it to happen in the first place. I never thought of using the tape. I think I'll try that. Thank you for your video! I do try to abduct it the best way I can with my other hand but it gets tricky to do. I think those exercises can help, too. But it is quite a lot of pain.
Thank you, Yoni! As always, I greatly appreciate your thorough explanations. I have pain in both spots that you showed. Should I alternate a couple of days to one spot and a couple to the other? Furthermore, I'm a movement instructor, so I move quite a bit and don't have any restrictions in mobility, just pain... Should I check anything else? Finally, do you have tips to address the root cause of the pain (a lot of the times at the shoulder girdle/ upper spine)?
You're very welcome, Galit! Rather then alternating back and forth, I tend to focus on 1 area exclusively for a period of time. Only when that area is under control will I branch out to a second area.
Great video, thank you. Ive tried all the three tests and seems fine. However when i try to do a push up the pain is triggered in my cmc joint. the wall test is fine. So really dont know whats wrong
Thank you! What you describe could be caused by a few different things. The best course of action would be to see a qualified practitioner in your area for a thorough assessment of the problem.
The strategies in this video will do much more for you than ice or heat ever could. Here's another video with some important hand-related information: ruclips.net/video/h8bUdYfA-nc/видео.html
Is it possible to use both Rock tape applications?? I have pain in both areas. I've applied the first technique and it works great but have pain in my thumb.
Thank you my friend I am the typical 60 year old guy who always played through pain and my hands been bothering me for about five years now because I work at a desk all day so when I get home I do a lot of woodworking and it’s all hand work and my thumb just hurt all the time and I’ve just got used to it and then I thought I bet there’s some bright young people out there who have figured out how to fix this and so I saw your video in another gentleman between the two of your videos are you both had some great ideas I especially love the tennis ball idea I’ve tried that myself actually I use my fist put my thumb on my fist and push down and wow that is some fun pain I Telya but it does loosen it up but I especially like the stretches on the tape idea do you recommend ice at all?
I'm glad this was helpful for you, Mr. Koolio! I almost never use ice - and instead use light therapy which has many of the same benefits of ice, with none of the downside. Here's a video where I go into that - ruclips.net/video/QOF5oqZsY04/видео.html
I have starting arthrosis of carpometacarpal on my left hand, while I'm right handed...Not really pain, but a numbness of the thenar and lateral wrist, due to a neurogenic thoracic outlet sydnrome. Do you have a video on nTOS?
Well, this was a great video! I'm too lazy to do any taping. I'm old and stubborn so I will simply continue to do construction work, play drums and rub my sore MFJ :) I will however stretch it out.
I'm glad you were able to take something away from this video. I think you'll find the stretching technique to be quite a bit more effective than rubbing the sore joint.
Good question. No, it's not necessarily arthritis. In the early stages, it could be chronic strain/sprain injury which can create a chronic inflammatory response unless appropriate rest from the offending activities is taken and rehabilitation is pursed.
I know this video is 3 years old, but my pain is on the next joint up on the thumb. It’s been swollen and painful for a while now. Any advice Dr. Whitten?
Hi doc, I had a severe hit/impact on my thenar eminence and I had bruise before but now it is not swelling but it is still painful What treatment it could help? Thank you doc
For acute injuries, light therapy can be very beneficial for both symptom relief and accelerating the healing process - ruclips.net/video/QOF5oqZsY04/видео.html
It's an important point - the tape itself is not therapeutic. All of the benefit comes from the location and way in which it is applied. Tape application is a learned skill - it takes practice. You might also consider seeing a Rock Tape certified practitioner in your area who could go through it with you one-on-one.
I just happened to see your video, hope this helps bcz im having pain in both my thumbs but the right thumb pains really bad till the wrist, as I use my right hand alot 😢
these procedures you mentioned, do they apply to a working mechanic that uses his hands aggressively with hand and hand tool operations? I have both options that you have mentioned in your video but the one thing is I have a severe problem with my middle finger knuckle on my right hand. At one point with excessive use I ended up with fluid on the knuckle. how will this tape help that?
I bought some Rock Tape, but it is in the form of a roll of tape, versus smaller patches like you asked in this video. I am in need of correcting my thumb position as it is not possible now for me to straighten out my thumb due to the osteoarthritis....years of gripping and pulling with dental instruments is the main contributor to this problem. How can I get the smaller pieces of tape as you demonstrated with in the video?
Hi Gail, Sorry I should have explained that the Rock Tape will come in a roll and it's up to the individual to cut it to the right size for their application (and body size). Once you have a good pair of scissors and practice a little it ends up being much better this way b/c the roll lasts a lot longer than the pre-cut strips (which never seem to be the right length).

Glad it was helpful, Roberto!
Wow. Thank you so much. I am going to find your videos relating to carpal tunnel as well!!
You're welcome, Janet! I'm glad it helped.
Thank you so much for this information. Both of my thumb joints hurt seriously. Can I put both strips of tape on at the same time?
You're welcome, Kathy! Absolutely, both strips can be worn at the same time.
Great video! Can you do both tape areas at the same time?
Thank you! Yes, absolutely both areas can be taped at the same time.
You are so right...thank you..great help...🙏
Cheers! Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant. Thank you so so much. I appreciated.
You're very welcome! So glad it helped you!
Thank you so much ❤ very good information
Glad it was helpful, Irma!
Can have the tape on while you do the exercises?
Absolutely, seeview06! Rock Tape is breathable and highly flexible so it's very easy to wear during exercise.
How about if I sit to do these exercises; I have an arthritic spine and standing for any time causes pain and I MUST sit down.
Absolutely, Judy! Find a way that works for you. 👍
@@painfixprotocol Thank you 😊 🙏
Great video, thank you.
Awesome 👌
Love this Sir
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍
Can you give me some advice. I will highly appreciate your feedback Sir
It's hard to offer specific advice without a physical examination.
Great advice, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
What are other alternatives of tennis ball and that sticker?
Those are the two I usually start with. Perhaps I'll make another video on this topic with other strategies.
Great tips. thanks DOC
My pleasure!
Thank you for the link.
You bet!
Thanks Yoni
You're very welcome!
thank you so much
You're most welcome!
Between texting and guitar my thumb fatigues fast. I love to play guitar. What should I do? Hear or ice? Sorry I’m going to finish the video. Thanks!
The strategies in this video will do much more for you than ice or heat ever could. Here's another video with some important hand-related information: ruclips.net/video/h8bUdYfA-nc/видео.html
Thanks you very I will try
Most welcome 😊
Thank you so much!!! Such a blessing!!! 🙏🏽
So glad it was helpful!
Excellent thanks
You're most welcome!
Great! Thanks! ❤️
You're welcome, littlebrook!
have a quick question, can you still do the exercises with the wrist taped up?
Absolutely, John!
Is it possible to use both Rock tape applications?? I have pain in both areas. I've applied the first technique and it works great but have pain in my thumb.
Yes, Bonnie! You can absolutely use both applications at the same time. So glad the 1st technique is helping you!
Where we get that tape?
ROCK TAPE is available here: amzn.to/3nnSb6u
This is good for my husband. He stays on the computer a lot and complains about his hand hurting.
I hope it's helpful him!
Can you do both tapings at the same time? Layering?
Yes, absolutely. Both tape applications can be used simultaneously.
I have starting arthrosis of carpometacarpal on my left hand, while I'm right handed...Not really pain, but a numbness of the thenar and lateral wrist, due to a neurogenic thoracic outlet sydnrome. Do you have a video on nTOS?
That's a good suggestion for a future video. Thanks!
Awesome tutorial!!! THANK YOU! :)
You're very welcome, Jeannie!
Thank you , great information
You're welcome, Fairouz! I'm so glad it was helpful!
Well, this was a great video! I'm too lazy to do any taping. I'm old and stubborn so I will simply continue to do construction work, play drums and rub my sore MFJ :)
I will however stretch it out.
I'm glad you were able to take something away from this video. I think you'll find the stretching technique to be quite a bit more effective than rubbing the sore joint.
Overworked? Is it always Necessarily arthritis? Is there a test?
Good question. No, it's not necessarily arthritis. In the early stages, it could be chronic strain/sprain injury which can create a chronic inflammatory response unless appropriate rest from the offending activities is taken and rehabilitation is pursed.
@@painfixprotocol Thank you for your response information& exercises too! 👏 My thumb thanks you.
I know this video is 3 years old, but my pain is on the next joint up on the thumb. It’s been swollen and painful for a while now. Any advice Dr. Whitten?
Hi doc, I had a severe hit/impact on my thenar eminence and I had bruise before but now it is not swelling but it is still painful
What treatment it could help?
Thank you doc
For acute injuries, light therapy can be very beneficial for both symptom relief and accelerating the healing process - ruclips.net/video/QOF5oqZsY04/видео.html
What about pain and swelling on the thumb?
Good question, Dina. Treatment will depend on the source of that pain & swelling and whether it's acute or chronic.
I’m using the tape but I’m using it some what wrong . Thanks
It's an important point - the tape itself is not therapeutic. All of the benefit comes from the location and way in which it is applied. Tape application is a learned skill - it takes practice. You might also consider seeing a Rock Tape certified practitioner in your area who could go through it with you one-on-one.
Is it ok to get that tape wet? Can I wash my hands with that taped on?
Yes. Rock Tape will stay on even after getting wet.
I just happened to see your video, hope this helps bcz im having pain in both my thumbs but the right thumb pains really bad till the wrist, as I use my right hand alot 😢
I hope this is helpful for you!
@@painfixprotocol yes Doc, been doing this for two days now there is little relief. Thank you God bless you🙏
What if you have pain at the base of your thumb and the higher joint for taping? I have a trigger thumb too. Thanks for the answers.
these procedures you mentioned, do they apply to a working mechanic that uses his hands aggressively with hand and hand tool operations?
What if can’t put enough weight on the tennis ball without it causing quite a bit of pain
In cases like that, I will usually switch to a softer ball or have the person apply less pressure.
