      My guess would be that the poor, unfortunate bride-to-be resorted to asking Leota to contact the spirits to find out what happened. Since the Phantom wasn't in the spirit-world anymore she failed to recive any answers, however she left a crystalball behind for future visits...😉

      That's sort of what I was thinking. Either that, or the first seance she did was actually in the area of Thunder Mesa (potentially be the daughter to see if she could contact her fiance). But she could sense that the Thunderbird was angered and left for Louisiana, where when she died she could go between her crystal balls because they were her mediums to channel spirits.

    • @MarcovanBergen
      @MarcovanBergen 3 года назад +17

      The old lore is more subtle, based more on insinuating situations rather than explaining them in full. At the end of the new lore Melanie appears manically trying to keep you there with her as a simple last scare instead of her skeleton pointing you to the exit while she remains behind, still waiting. The old lore stuck with you long after you left the attraction. And seeing here age and cry at her boudoir always hit me right in the feels. It was done so well!

    I just assumed that in this new lore Henry “arranged” for all Melanie’s suitors to meet gruesome ends, being a terrible possessive father and all. It makes it all the more likely that his ghost would return with murderous intent, if he was already doing these things in life.
    Having ridden Phantom Manor exactly once in its original state, I can say that I kind of miss Melanie’s characterization. In the original story, even though she wasted away in the manor she still maintained some goodness and humanity, pointing us to the way out so we wouldn’t be trapped with her. In this incarnation, all the tragedies in her life piled up to the point that she truly went insane and let her darker instincts take over as a ghost. It makes for a creepy end to the ride for sure, but I just miss having one bride in the Many Haunted Mansions who wasn’t, y’know, EVIL.
    Anyway, great video as always! ^_^

  • @lauriesmith4575
    @lauriesmith4575 5 лет назад +71

    I like the old story line better. It's much more melancholy and lends a tragic twist to the classic story of the jilted bride. I also like the fact that in the original, you don't really know if the phantom is Melanie's father or not. The new story line just seems so... damned generic.

  • @___David__
    @___David__ 5 лет назад +70

    I like the new one because it didn't really change the story and the things that were changed were quickly reverted upon fan feedback (they had replaced the waltz in the ghost ball with the music from the American version which just doesn't fit and, let's be honest, is much worse :P).
    By the way, from the new story, the one thing I would like to clarify is that Melanie herself never found out what happened to any of her husband-to-be's. She's still waiting for the last one to show up at the wedding feast.
    Oh and the phantom canyon was already full of dead people and only dead people before the refurbishment. They just improved the animatronics.

    As for why the ghosts moved into the house or stayed in the town, I think it's just one more horrifying example of just how evil Henry Ravenswood is: after death, in addition to psychologically torturing his daughter, he traps all the souls of Thunder Mesa in the town and his mansion so he can lord over them in death as well, preventing them from ever resting.

From what I remember of the old one though (From a book about the Haunted Mansion I bought at Disney like 12 years ago) the original story was like you said for the most part but from what I recall the wedding day was the same day as the earthquake and it killed basically everyone in the house except Melanie and she wandered the house looking for her groom. I may be misremembering but who knows. Either way I'm so glad you did a video on this because this story has always been so intriguing to me and with the update they did I was curious about the details of the story.

    Hello!
    As I am Japanese fan of Haunted Mansion, I always love your channel.
    I also a huge fan of Phantom Manor and I made some blogposts about it. (In Japanese, of course.)
    I have studied about Phantom Manor and there are somethings I want to discuss with you guys.
    1 I thought the Train engineer who planned to marry Mary was only in the original story...?
    (I thought there are only 4 suitors, who can be seen on the stretching portraits.)
    Was the Train engineer the one hunged by the Phantom, which is not changed from original story?
    2 In the original Manor, There was an letter from Mary’s brother in her room.
    I saw a blogpost which says the letter was kind of a inner joke.
    Do you know the letter is kept after the reopening?
    I mean, in the new story, Does Mary still have her brother?
    3 in the original version, there was the little bride in the wine cellar, who tells us to Hurry back.
    In the attraction, the bride(Mary) helps us to escape the Manor by pointing the exit.
    This is so odd to tell us to hurry back after that.
    I thought I read that the little bride’s voice is provided by the actress who did Leota.
    So... the little bride was Leota in her wedding gown? But why?
    (And I think the little bride scene was deleted after the reopening.)
    Sorry for such long comment. (I am such a Phantom Manor geek!)
    Thank you.

    • @elsie8757
      @elsie8757 5 лет назад +1

      -Yes, the train engineer is the guy being hung by the Phantom. In the original story he was Melanie's only suitor, but now in the rewrite there were four others _before_ him.
      -I never heard about Melanie having a brother even in the original lore, but then again I'm not a Mansion expert.
      -The one who tells the guests to hurry back in Phantom Manor is Melanie, yeah. It makes more sense in the new version because she's shown to be desperate for someone-- anyone, at this point-- to finally marry her, and I think the part where her skeleton points the way out has been removed.
      However, the only "little bride" I can think of is in the other Haunted Mansions and is actually not a bride at all. She's wearing a cloak of some kind, not a wedding dress with a veil. She is called Little Leota, but only because her voice was provided by Leota Tombs, who was the _face model_ for Madame Leota, not her voice. Madame Leota's voice was done be Eleanor Audley. Also, technically, "Little Leota" is not the tiny "hurry back"-lady's official name. Instead she is The Ghostess. She and Madame Leota are not the same character.

    i'm wondering if Rowan D. Falls is connected to Albert Falls (keeping the Disney S.E.A connection alive). I guess there is no Train Conductor in the new Story and Barry Claude is the last suitor, who proposed to Melanie and wanted to mary her. But in the end, when killed and his soul gotten trapped in the manor. He wants to leave and give the ring back, so Melanie wants a new suitor, the new arrivals...

      @@elsie8757 isn't it Just the Phantom starring at us? There is no hanging in the new version i think. I would love to think that the old story is part of the new, but it raises questions. Actually, in the new version there is no mention of the train conductor who wanted to marry Melanie in the original story. His hanged body above the stretching room is gone, now the Phantom is menacing directly the guests with the noose...so this led me to a theory: in this version, according to Henry each one of the visitors may potentially be Melanie's groom and so he's constantly trying to scare them or trap them inside the Manor and, at the same time, driving Melanie mad.
    In fact, according to Imagineers who worked on this refurb, the four suitors have been killed by Henry himself through fake accidents based on their names (as seen in the stretching room), so this theory makes more sense.

In the old one, she tries to escape and saves you in the end. With that being said, they did add a lot to the ride and it’s not a bad change. I'm actually really upset that Henry Ravenswood was the phantom. I think that, especially for this new ride, having him be an ominous spirit who killed each of Melanie's suitors would be better. As well as better matching the Phantom Opera story that it was based on.

      Jay Marine yeah I’m totally agreed with you! I also thought that the phantom could be a soul in love for Melanie yet very manipulating by acting like her father so Melanie could be “controlled “ or scared of him even without knowing that he killed her groom

      I agree! It never made sense to me that a man who was so overprotective of his daughter in life would then do his best to make her miserable as a ghost. I mean killing her fiance so she wouldn't leave Thunder Mesa _maybe,_ but where does inviting a bunch of other spirits into the manor to taunt her with a demonic wedding reception fit into that?

      @@JayMadd13 But it has always been suggested that Henry was the phantom, especially because in the old lore, just like in the new one, he was completely against Melanie marrying that guy, but couldn't do anything because he died in the earthquake along with his wife. Therefore, the phantom was his revengeful spirit coming back to kill the groom. This new storyline made it official.

    Dallin, what day will you be at the Haunted Mansion 50th Celebration? I will be getting coverage of the event as well.
    Also, on the subject of Phantom Manor, something big that you missed is that the hanging groom in the stretching room has been removed. I don’t believe that is a canon part of the story anymore.
    It can be inferred though, that the “groom” for whom Melanie is waiting, is YOU, the rider of the attraction.
    Not only does Melanie ask for your hand at the end of the attraction with the mirror illusion, the Phantom threatens you directly with the noose above your head in the stretching room and warns that you are doomed, just like Melanie’s previous suitors. And I believe the new French narration includes a line where the Phantom flat out asks if perhaps you are his daughter’s new “intended”. Perhaps the rider is now the “vanishing groom” of which Madame Leota speaks.

    To be honest, I like both the original and the updated Phantom Manors. I'm maybe one of the few fans who genuinely was open to the refurbishment and the changes that were added to the ride. I liked the original because it held a mysterious story with romantic characters (i.e. Melanie and Jake, the Engineer) set in a lonely Gothic mansion. I like the updated version because it's the same story but this time we get to learn the ENTIRE story, including the Phantom's identity. A lot of people did not like the updated story because they said it "loses its mystery", which I totally understand. But honestly, I felt so satisfied when it was announced that the Phantom was Henry Ravenswood. It feels so good when you find out you were right all along. HOWEVER, I was really disappointed in the ending of the updated ride (the skeleton bride is replaced by the mirror gimmick found in the Haunted Mansion). I didn't have a problem with Melanie's spooky proposal, where she calls out to anyone who will accept her hand in marriage. A lot of fans thought she was changed into an evil spirit; I wholeheartedly disagree. Tom Fitzgerald, an imagineer, confirmed that Melanie went insane after lingering in her mansion for so long (hence her crazy proposal). It makes sense to me; if I was trapped in my own house by my dead father and never got to marry the love of my life, I'd go insane too. Overall, they could have done so much better...
    As for Madame Leota, I always thought that there were a few Madame Leotas, all set in different storylines (much like alternate universes). In Phantom Manor, I thought that Madame Leota was a medium for the dead so that Melanie could know whether or not her suitors' spirits were with her.

  • @shibandit
    @shibandit 3 года назад

    At first glance, Madame Leota seems like a random cameo but of all the ghosts from the original, she makes the most sense thematically for one big reason: the spiritualism craze that caught on around the Victorian/old west era, which Phantom Manor is of course set in. It's kinda similar to why they put the mummy in the original graveyards, peoples' fascination at that time of ordering mummies and "communicating with the dead" or just wanting a macabre house guest, and not a very lively one at that.
    A notable real world example of the spiritualism craze is the Winchester House, that whole thing started when Sarah Winchester consulted with a psychic medium who while "channeling her late husband" told her to move west and continuously keep building a house for herself and to supposedly appease (or confuse?) the spirits of victims of her family's rifle.
    Considering how the original Haunted Mansion was partially based on Winchester House (endless hallway, otherworldly construction and especially the foyer) it seems like it came full circle with Phantom Manor. So while they opted to not include kings/queens, Caesar, and other figures that wouldn't fit the Old West setting, Leota seems like a good fit without needing any retheming, she's already a "disembodied" medium that could fit most any era, similar to how the singing busts don't seem out of place in the catacombs.

    I'm so glad you did the Phantom Manor video, thank you! It's rumored, in the old story, that Madam Leota was friends with the Phantom and was invited to the Manor. I enjoy the new Phantom Manor story as well as the overall effects. I kind of wish they kept the Phantom animatronic when you left Phantom Canyon because it was creepier - seriously, it's the rotting corpse of the Phantom. Melanie at the end asking guests to marry her drives the being in the Manor for too long stir crazy notion that was discussed at the new Manor's reveal, but I enjoy her corpse pointing way out. It's a way she can never peacefully obtain so she shows the guests how to escape from his wrath. Also, Hell yes more Vincent Price

However; it is more than likely it's the same actor who recently played Vincent Van Ghoul for 'Scooby-Doo and the Curst of the 13th Ghost', Maurice LaMarche. It makes sense that Melanie would have an interest in contacting the dead having lost 4 lovers so perhaps she set up the seance room in her house, hiring a then-alive Madame Leota. When the earth quake hit (Leota didnt see that coming) she is killed in it and her spirit haunts the seance room in the mansion for all eternity.

    They did so many thing to make it better with Phantom Manor... And yet so many small things that are actually worse than before. The new story is one of them... It's trying to add Haunted Mansion elements to an otherwise creepy and mysterious storyline involving a single missing groom. Along with some effects that have been removed and some added that don't make sense (like the two dueling shooters changing-portrait). The desperate Melanie crying out to random guests to marry her, makes her like she's is the reason of the deaths like in HM, while she would be the victim in the new story. It's just not very well thought through

    I had the pleasure of going to Disneyland Paris two weeks ago. There's also a portrait right before the stretching room of Melanie standing with the Phantom in front of the manor; the portrait then goes back in time and the Phantom turns into Henry Ravenswood (and the wallpaper goes from old and peeling to new and intact).
    Getting to hear Vincent Price do the familiar Ghost Host narration was *delightful*, though one difference between Phantom Manor and the Haunted Mansion is that Phantom Manor doesn't have a whole lot of narration once you get on the ride. I also found the tonal shift when the singing busts showed up to be a bit jarring. And I have to say, one of the weirdest things about Phantom Manor is that the Ghost Host doesn't lower the safety bar. You have to do it yourself. My many rides on the American Haunted Mansions have conditioned me not to lower my own lap bar on that ride.
