The best way to plant this rose is to purchase soil specifically for Roses. You can use the entire bag to fill up a container or amend your current ground soil with this. This is the product that I used:

While planting, it's a good idea to add some fertilizer for these plants to munch on because they have a lot of work to do. If you are planting a bare root rose then they have to first set new roots and then new leaves and flowers. Growing those beautiful roses is a lot of work and these plants are big feeders! You will also need to feed them every 14-21 days during the growing season. Feed your plants with this (Espoma Rose Fertilizer):
amzn.to/3PEiCnt
Do you have Aphids? This is my go-to spray for not only aphids but also Japanese Bettles, White Flies, Spider Mites, and other bugs that won't leave my beautiful roses alone!
amzn.to/3MT4nsO
A bare root rose will need to be soaked in water for a minimum of 2 hours, but it's best to let them soak for 5-6 6 before putting them into the ground.
When you plant a rose, plant it deep. Put the crown of the plant below the soil grade. It's always a good idea to have some mulch too because they like moist soil.
And, last but not least you will want to have some spray on hand that can kill bugs, aphids, white flys, etc. This Organic spray has Neem oil which you will want to spray every few weeks. This will also help with black spot and powder mildew. If you have ever grown a rose you know these take a bit of work, but are well worth all the love. This is my go-to rose spray:
amzn.to/3PEiCnt
Enjoy!

Always thought that David Austin should do mystery rose. You pay a few dollars extra and they include a random rose. Sounds fun!
I love this idea 😃
I planted Olivia Rose Austin in March (Coastal SoCal zone 10a). Gorgeous! Lots of blooms, nearly 3’ tall, very, very healthy. Light fragrance. You’ll love her.
Great! I’m very excited…hopefully this time next year she’s 3ft tall 🙏
gotta love those english roses! thanks for sharing.
Gotta collect’em all 😝
I just planted a Boscabel this spring and It is fast becoming my favorite. Love your roses and your modern cottage garden!
I have gone back and forth between Boscobel and Alnwick. I think you helped make up my mind 🙂
You got a good spotted one. The pots I got last year was horrible. Way smaller, having black pot and snails. I was so disappointed I had to nurse them back to health. I will stick to David Austin bare root roses only going forward.
I 100% agree with you. The ones I received in the video were overall pretty healthy but they were 50% the size of the ones online. The Lady did have some black spot. In CA I will not be buying them in 2qt again for a couple of reasons. First I received them during summer and they didnt like at all trying to root in during the hot hot summer. Second, the price. It wasn't worth the added price. Good comment Cassandra :0)
I had Olívia Austin and I very like! Is beautiful!
I’m so glad to hear. She’s already putting growth and a little tiny flower 😀
Good morning!🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Good morning!
Heaven roses…
HAHA, yes they really are!!!
ORA is amazing Glenn.
I'm so glad to hear that!!! Whats funny is I ended up with it by accident. I originally ordered a different rose but they couldn't fulfill the order so this was the one I ended up with 😄
💯
Hi there!😘
Would be great to see a garden tour
Glad someone wants to see it ❤️
olivia gets fragrant only from the third/fourth year which is a long wait and you need to prune it lower to ensure strong stems. But it's the best looking flower out of the whole range for sure.
Well, I guess good things are worth the wait 😃
Strange, I could smell mine from the first buds that flowered n it smells so good
@@tonyt5493 depends on the weather too. Generally speaking it can be lightly fragrant at the start but gets better with age. Olivia generally is not a strong scented.rose.anyway
Beautiful roses ! But is it me or at least the first plant seemed to have problems on its leaves ? However, I hope they'll establish without problem in your garden and you'll enjoy them for years to come :) I have a few David Austin roses, not so famous ones but they do look good too: Geoff Hamilton (its rose cups do not like heavy rain), Abraham Darby, a wonderful rose (colour and scent), Graham Thomas (fruity scent, very healthy), and the latest additions are Lady of Shallot, gorgeous, with the colour changing during the day, Princesse Charlene de Monaco which I adore, and one called Isabelle Autissier putting on her first bloom ever, can't wait to see the others !
You have a very good eye….I was disappointed at the over all plant I got. The lady Gardner has some ratty yellow leaves and maybe some black spot. Two days after planting all of the leaves fell off. I am keeping her nice and watered and I am shading her from the hot-hot sun. I’m hopeful she will rebound. But yes not their best plant 😕
@@intheglenn I'm sorry for you; I would have thought ordering from them directly would guarantee top notch quality...I'm sure if you contact them they could do something for you. And yeah, I'm a photographer, so I try to keep a good eye ;)
'Gabriel Oak' and 'Eustacia Vye' smelled strong right out of the box. Emily Bronte (in fool bloom) did have the scent while unboxing but it was somewhat weaker than that of 'Silas Marner' which, in turn, was OK but significantly weaker than Gabriel's and Eustacia's.
I have heard Gabriel Oak is very fragrant. My Eustacia Vye has a much stronger sent them Emily. Hopefully, in time both of ours mature and we get a more fragrant rose from Emily.
@@intheglenn hopefully, but has that ever happened to any rose?.. Emily does have a nice scent, just not a strong one as advertised..
Thanks for video. When did you order and how long for delivery.
Ami...I ordered the roses in late April and received them the day the video was posted. In the states they are sold out now, but they will get more close towards the end of the year.
Can you do a running list of the top 10 roses which have in your opinion the most intoxicating, lovely fragrances?
Thats a great idea. I think I will need more time with these roses and probably need to add more to the garden. My favorite that I have from David Austin is def Desdemona
@@intheglenn The website says it has an Old Rose fragrance. Is it similar to Gertrude Jekyll or others like Mr Lincoln? Or is it distinct enough to be worth getting?
@@shahrokhnaqvi9613 To me I dont understand why they call it an old fragrance, I don't think so at all. To me it is very citrus smelling and I mainly smell lemons. In my rose review of Desdemona I called it fresh, while someone in the comments said baby power which is another great way to describe it.
GLENN! I happy to have to found your channel and to know that you have both Eustacia Vye & Emily Brontë Roses.
Having initially wanted Ice Berg Roses (classic, pure white) I’m looking to pivot and go with either Eustacia Vye or Emily Brontë (Quantity of 3).
As they both are supposed to do well in shady conditions, which 1 of 3 will be placed more so in, if I’m looking to go more white (even considering when they age) would Emily Brontë be the one? If so, how would you compare it to Desdemona?
I like Desdemona from the videos I’ve watched, but I’m also not a fan of the blooms facing downward.
Hey!!! I'm glad you found it to. I love both of those roses for different reasons. As I mentioned EB is stunning, but for me the sent wasnt there. Eustacia has been tough to grow because I have only been getting small flushes of flowers, but then sent is great. My last property had 3 ice berg roses and that shrub was ALWAY covered in blooms!!!
@intheglenn glad to have found your channel. I planted an Iceberg about a month ago and it's already budding up nicely! I wasn't sure at first but now looking forward to seeing it bloom. I have it near Dancing in the Dark which has come up blind this year. The weather has been difficult with it being a mild winter until mid-March, and then, freezing temps. Oh well, that's gardening life!
Montreal, QC zone 6a/b
@@Lea-zf7lm thanks!!! I’m glad you’re here!!! I use ice very in lots of my landscape designs. Iceberg is always in bloom, very low maintenance, great health and the stark white color is beautiful. Happy gardening!!
I tried to get a Elizabeth this year and couldn't get one.
Elizabeth looks beautiful! I have been trying to get Roald Dahl and haven’t had much luck…maybe next year 😊
Are you going to get the new rose David Austin brought out the other week called DANNAHUE?
I’m not sure it’s going to be available in the states, but to be honest I have Roald Dahl high on my list so I will be purchasing this one before Dannahue. I think they look very similar. I have two large pots and in spring I hope to buy Roald Dahl and at least one or two others. What about you???
@@intheglenn I am not either this year however I did buy desdemona Bare Root just before they stopped shipping them for the summer in the UK. It was your video of desdemona and a video of someone going to David Austin gardens that convinced me. So thank you.
@@thefrontbackside that’s great! She is an amazing rose and a beautiful scent 😊
When did you buy them? They seem to be out of stock for 2quart planted roses for the last month or so... very disappointing
I ordered them a little over two months ago. It was a long wait so I was very excited for them to arrive. I bet they brought a ton of them to Chelsea flower show, so they may restock a few in the next couple of weeks so keep checking.
@intheglenn keeping my fingers crossed.. I have bought all my DA roses either from Heirloom Roses or local nurseries, and only 1, Eustacia Vye, was purchased bare root this month from DA.. it arrived in pretty poor condition, which really upset me as I thought DA would be exemplary in the customer service, but now it is leafing.. we'll see when it will be blooming but I am extremely impatient to see particularly that rose blooming 🙂
@@lichitchyan I have always gotten very nice and healthy roses from them so I am bit surprised yours wasnt. And, yes their online and by phone customer service isn't great. Best of luck.....Eustacia is one of my favs!
@@intheglennfor David Austin USA customer, they grow the roses in Texas
Where do you get them?
I ordered them directly from David Austin. I ordered them back in April and it took them a while to come. David Austin is currently sold out in the states but they always get more later in the year so keep watching. I’m 🙏 for Roald Dahl and Charles Darwin. What are you wanting to order??
What zone is this?
I am in Nor Cal which is 9b
Are these own root or grafted?
I’m no expert so I am not 100% sure. Nothing says in the paperwork.
Their potted roses are own root. I’ve been eyeing that Lady Gardener rose as a potted own root. Due to be released in a little while.
Do you regularly spray your roses for diseases?
I dont regularly spray, but I have had to use some sprays to battle black spot, white flies and powder mildew. I had 3 weeks this year where the Japanese beetles came and ate most of my first flush. If they hadn't, I think the roses would have looked much better in the video. 😖They were awful to deal with and I would have to go out multiples times per day and take them off the roses.....it was the closest I have ever been to buying a chemical spray.
If you have roses do you spray and what have been your results?
I’m new to growing roses. I’ve battled the desire to introduce roses to my garden because I knew they are fussy, but I couldn’t resist anymore haha. I’m using neen oil as recommended by many Rosarians. So far, I don’t have black spot issues, just minor sawfly problem. I’ll let you know if the neem oil is helping. On a different note, but I really want to get some David Austin roses, however, I was late and they sold out on all roses! Do you know when they usually restock?
@@nourabdullah1644 It would be great to hear your results with neem. I believe DA comes out with some later in the year, but for sure you will be able to buy some in spring.
