I grew up on the Welsh border and my parents used to take me to David Austin’s garden centre in Shrewsbury every other weekend. I have many of his roses in my garden. The scent from their blooms still have the power to transport me back to those hazy days wandering around his garden centre with my much missed dad. Loved watching this video. Thank you once again Janey for sharing. Xxx

Loved today’s focus on David Austin roses. They’re indeed wonderful and I absolutely adore them! I live about 2 hours away from David Austin Rose Gardens, in England, and will be visiting in February for a Rose Pruning Workshop. My first ever visit was in June, and I was blown away seeing their rose catalogue ‘live’ and in their full glory. It’s a sight a rose-lover doesn’t forget easily!

Mr. David Austin has made a tremendous gift to humanity through his huge passion and tenacity in materializing for us uniquely colored and textured masterpieces as well as divinely smelling. I give him thanks and bow with gratitude 💗. I have these beauties in my garden and not a few 😊, and yes, for me - as well as for Mrs. Fionuala- they are the most beautiful roses in the world. They are unique. Love, love, love them!

I was so excited to hear her say The Pilgrim is a good starter rose because I just bought one, my first David Austin, in November. If you live in Southern Calif. I highly recommend Otto and Sons Nursery in Ventura County for David Austins because they have dozens of varieties all year round. They are growers and offer wholesale prices. I got my Pilgrim during their Thanksgiving sale - it was over 5 ft tall, and was only $35! I don't work for them, I just wanted to mention them because Petaluma is really far for us in southern part of the state.

Eustacia Vye is in Claus Dalby's front garden here in Denmark, climbing on his fence facing towards the street. Unfortunately, it is a one-time bloomer, so I would not go for that one myself. I always go for those repeat flowering roses that come back with a second flush of flowers later in the season.
If you like apricot color, I can highly recommend Crown Princess Margareta. She is truly gorgeous and a repeat flowering rose with the most wonderful strong fruity fragrance. I have 2 of her myself and she is one of my favorites. I have several different David Austin roses in my garden. Gertrude Jekyll is so beautiful, a super wonderful choice, and you will become SO addicted like the rest of us, and go back again and again for more David Austins, Janey! 😍😍😍💚

I've not had success with the climbing version but trying again! It's an amazing rose. If you like yellow, I cant recommend Golden Celebration strongly enough. It's super disease resistant and performs beautifully. So many beauties. I’m trying to do a climber in my front yard against my house and I’ve been going back and forth between the pilgrim and James Galway. But now y’all got me thinking about Gertrude Jekyl!! I can’t decide!!!! I think my heart wants to go for the pilgrim because my mother who has passed loved yellow roses, and so I’ve always been fond of yellow roses. But I think I want to do a light pink color because it will pop against my house more than yellow. Decisions! Decisions!!

So, no problem with diseases, do you have Japanese beetles. Between the two, if the beetles make me as crazy this yr as last, sadly I'll be done with roses. I would love to see Fionuala home garden, it must be stunning.

My ‘gateway’ David Austin rose was Golden Celebration, which is no longer available. The one in my moms garden is still huge and absolutely gorgeous. David Austin has a new golden rose that I think was intended as a replacement but I don’t have one yet, I’m hoping to try it as I love golden roses.

I have 5 bare root DA in my cart. I do need to pull the trigger. Have 2 Lady of Shallot which were said to do the best in my southern hot/humid location. Hope the others will do well. I would love to see a video on growing a rose on an obelsik or maybe I have the wrong one on it. It just blooms at the top. Maybe I should get the short climber??? My current climber in there is not a DA. Thanks for the video!

I live in Texas where we have the dreaded rosé rosette virus. Several years ago I was able to attend the Chelsea Flower Show and talk with the people from David Austin rose. I grow only David Austin roses in pots and so far so good. My favorite is The Poets Wife-prolific and great aroma. Last year I ordered that variety in a tree rose. It’s done very well but gets so top heavy. Can you do a video about how to prune tree roses? Thanks so much!

Hi Celeste! I too am in Texas and have a Boscobel in a pot for the last 2 years. Soil level has dropped. Do you repot yours, or top off with soil?! I’d love any wisdom you could share!!

@@kariswanson5285 I’m in the Dfw area, zone 8A. I grew mine in smaller pots the first year, transplanted them into large cement pots with drip irrigation about 2 years ago. My soil level has remained stable. You can always top off the soil. I have emailed David Austin in the past for advice on growing in pots, they replied fairly quickly. My biggest issue has been with mildew. Neem oil at dusk really helps. This year I’m going to try a smaller climbing rose Wedgewood & Tess of the D’ Urbervilles in pots. So far my best grower is the Poets Wife. The most beautiful bloom is Double Delight. It’s more finicky than the others but worth the effort!

Thanks for a great video! We don’t see many David Austin roses for sale in Colorado and I’ve never seen a bare root for sale. I see you can order directly from David Austin online so I will do that this year. My only issue with them has been that the flowers are too heavy for the stem so they droop. Any ideas on if I can address that somehow?

Just FYI. The apricots will bleach out to yellow in the hot sun and won’t be that beautiful peachy color until late fall. I have them and am very disappointed in that as I really wanted the peachy color. I agree with her about Gophers LOVING roses. They will eat the roots to a nub. I try to get buy the DA roses Own Root because of our freaky weather Falls and Spring. 1 year I lost nearly all 70 of my DA roses to a freak freeze. Now I am down to 20 or so with a couple on order. Heirloom roses carries a bunch of DA roses and they grow them all on their own roots. Graham Thomas was my gateway DA rose. Found it at Home Depot barefoot 20+ years ago.

So one *can* prune roots on their bare-root DA roses. I read not to so I dug and dug and dug a very deep hole to plant mine. One didn't survive and another I planted in a container didn't either. DA has a good guarantee so I may be able to replace them.

Janey, just wondering what the water requirements are for these roses. I have an area I would really like to develop for roses this year. It has no irrigation, full sun, and I think I could get drip to them. I'm in New England. Each summer is a little different as far as the weather. Last year, we had sufficient rain. The previous year, drought conditions. Thanks!!
