Living in a part of the UK where we have hardly had a real summer for the past two years (lots of cloud, 70 on a good day and approaching 80 is a heatwave) and it does tend to rain a lot, it's interesting to see roses in a different climate. Even given our climate in the summer I do water copiously and if the saucers underneath my potted roses are dry I get the hose out and soak the pots, and I will water the roses in the ground almost daily. Temperatures this week have been in the low 50s and there has been so much mist that we have had less than an hour's official sunlight in November so far but my Lady of Shalotts are still flowering. Queen of Sweden I don't much like - mine reminds me of densely packed very upright bamboo, with flowers so high up that they cannot be appreciated. Good luck with your roses next season!
It’s finally cooling down a little here. Do you have mosquitoes in the UK? If I have water left in my saucers, they become a mosquito breeding ground. I actually drilled holes in my saucers, so the water would drain, but prevent the roots from growing into the ground!
Am so happy you did this. I am zone 8b/9 and I have the same experience with my Lady of Shallot which has never bloomed in its 2nd year, one or two here and there. My Queen of Sweden was better in the Spring but the leaves are dried out and scorched not sure if it entirely due to the heat. Olivia Rose Austin has thrived well in my garden and giving out buds and blooms now. I may get more of those. Hhhhmm sometimes I wish I lived in cooler climate so my Roses can thrive better.
I am already planning where I'm going to move things! I have a nice big rose bed being dug in back this week that gets afternoon shade and will have drip irrigation. I was going to move Lady of Shalott again and put her in the back, though I have a friend that has one out in front of his home in full sun and its GORGEOUS...
I grew the climbing Gertrude Jekyll in 2 different gardens for over 10 years and it only bloomed once in the spring, it's a stunning show but no repeat. Jenny at Gardening with Creekside grows the bush variety and that one seems to repeat bloom.
If you call David Austin, they say it’s the same bush they just sell it on two different areas and you have to trim it. That is disappointing though it is not as frequent a bloomer! Or maybe if you continually trim it, it stimulates more blooms? I got one puny bloom this month.
You know what? I love videos like this, because they are honest and you’re right, some roses are duds for some people. I like to give DA roses the benefit of the doubt for at least 3 years, but that’s just me. Thank you for posting this 👏 👍. Yeah, Emily Brontë is notorious for getting super tall and big but blooms only once.
1 year is NOTHING for a DA rose. Give them full 3 summers to settle and start performing as expected. If you're in a hot climate- those pots must be watered very frequently, otherwise they won't perform. I bet moving them in the ground will change things dramatically as it might get too hot in those pots.
your Gertrude checkel, not blooming, but being green and flowering is like my Pink Lemonade blue berry bush. last year, the leaves were full and green and no berries. it is 7 years old. this year, i did nothing for it, and it was crazy, the plant had the most berries it had every created.
Wow, I hope that they do better next year. When they did bloom, they were so pretty; and I like the neon one. Do you do anything with the rose petals? Thank you for keeping us company !
I don’t do anything with the petals, I just tossed them on the ground did heading. I have a feeling in the next year or two I will be so overwhelmed with blooms I’ll have to figure out something to do with them all lol maybe I’ll make potpourri!
Hmm.. I find it extremely odd that almost all your roses are having blooming issues. Have you pruned the roses? What’s your feeding and watering schedule. Are they in full sun or shade and if so how many hours. I have 37 DA roses in pots and only had issues with one . I’m in zone 7a.
Well for me, not blooming is the criteria for performance. I can handle occasional black spot or pests. Out of my 33 David Austins and 39 other roses, it's just that small handful that don't bloom. The 27 in pots were watered daily with drip irrigation, about 7 minutes, which is about a gallon a rose. A few got 8 hours of sun, some late afternoon shade (those did the best) , the majority were 12+ hours, full sun, I"m thinking it was too hot in the pots, 97º days with high humidity. I was feeding every 2 weeks. Most were not pruned, they are all first year roses. If there were SOME blooms, I did deadhead. I have moved some to other locations and plan on putting a few in the ground...we'll see if they. take off year 2!
I live in the Memphis area... I have 7 Claire Austin's 😂 that I bought this past spring. They are all in the ground. They love just a few hours of sun, and flower like crazy. There uis one or 2 that gets a lot of sun. The new growth gets burned off so those don't do quite as good. I've grown to like Harlow Carr. At first I didn't like it because it was too thorny. But it will really start to produce blooms once it gets established and they are very healthy and fragrant. I have the same issue with Emily Bronte that you do. It grows and I love the shape of the bush lol. But it just doesn't bloom that often. When it does it's beautiful and fragrant. I also have the same issue with the lady of shallot. Tiny leaves and tiny blooms. I'm going to see what happens next year before I do anything. It may take a while to get established Gertrude has been okay for me so far.
I finally had 1 TINY bloom on Gertrude and a spray of pretty flowers on my Claire...I hope I learn to like Harlow. But my other DAs are sooooo easy and lovely! But if Claire does well with only a few hours of sun, I have the perfect spot for her in the ground! I'll try moving her this winter.
My 4 Claire Austin's that have done the best are on a path surrounded with walls. They only get 3-4 hours of direct sun and no sun otherwise. I mean, they're not amazing, but they're always having a few blooms and have grown to 5-6 ft tall. And I've only had them for four months. I don't get much fragrance from it, although some people say it smells amazing. The blooms are large and cupped. My Gertrude seems to do better in sun. I read a lot of stuff about putting it in part shade, so I put it on that path but I mentioned above...but it seems to not produce new growth very quick. But when it was in full sun, a lot of the new growth would burn, but at least it would produce blooms. My best performing David Austin by far has been Gabriel Oak. Others like Olivia, Silas Marner, Molineaux, and Poets Wife have been quite good as well. But Gabriel Oak is always performing. My worst is 1)Lady of Shallot. I have 2 planted 18 inches apart. A few small blooms here and there. I bought one for my sister and it hasn't done well either. But maybe it takes a while to get established. 2) Eustacia Vye. I've tried both of them in sun and shade and in pots and ground. They just don't bloom very often and mine have not been disease resistant like they say. Maybe next year... This was my first summer with David Austins, so things could easily change next spring😂. Good luck with yours.
@@howard2031 I have Gabriel Oak coming in the spring. My second year DAs that I put in the ground are by far the best. They stopped producing octopus canes and have a wonderful shape and are covered in blooms (The Alnwick and Carding Mill). My Windermere has had 2 beautiful flushes but not as many as the other 2. It's still in a pot though, I'm putting in the ground this fall.
I spent hundreds of dollars on DA roses after 3 years I dug them all up and threw them away I don't like roses that drop their blooms when you touch them all the blooms where on the ground .

Lisa, what perfect timing for you to post..my favorite gardener. A beautiful 😍 diversion from thinking about "Miss Helene" 🌧️🌀 ⛈️ 😁
I hope you and your family are far away from the storm!

I just love roses!

Yes, almost all of them will be in the ground or are already in the ground emptying up my pots for my next batch of rose deliveries in the spring lol

I’m hoping that’s the case, sometimes I think we’re too impatient with our plants but it’s hard when other ones do so well right away.

plant some Burleburg pink roses, I have only one, but it is my favorite bush. I thought I saw one in your vid, but it is hard to tell.
I do not have that rose but I am going to Google it right now!
I spent hundreds of dollars on DA roses after 3 years I dug them all up and threw them away I don't like roses that drop their blooms when you touch them all the blooms where on the ground .
It’s funny, I was just saying I wish one of my longer case life roses WOULD drop petals, because I’m left with an old wilted rose until I deadhead. 😂
