My Young Modern Cottage Garden

  • I have always wanted a cottage garden. The problem is I live in the suburbs of CA with a modern-style home.....not the best backdrop for a cottage garden. So I am hoping to mix the craziness of a cottage garden, with a formal modern garden to create a MODERN STYLE COTTAGE GARDEN!
    Cottage gardens are usually densely planted, with curved colorful beds. Shrubs, perennials, fruits and vegetables are all grown together. Modern gardens have straight lines, with each plant carefully selected. They are planted in straight lines and groups. The decor is always kept to a minimum.
    So check out how this young garden was put together using a mix of both styles. I have lots of David Austin roses including Olivia Austin, Emily Bronte and Desdemona. I have several hydrangeas including the Incrediball and Oakleaf. You will also see salvia caradonna, nepeta walkers low, ornamental grasses and a new salvia called shell dancer. I list the plant names, what went into the plant selections and what the garden will look like this time next year. Enjoy!

    I love your garden! It’s lovely!
    You might over time bump your borders out from the fence to give it more cottage-y feel. A staggered line of bushes is going to give you a much more dense/lush/exuberant feeling in the garden vs a linear planting. Plus, like you’ve already seen with your Gaura-Perrenials want some depth to the bed when they’re happy. They’ll fill it out! And it’s these staggered layers and happy full-size plants that really give off that cottage vibe.

    • @intheglenn
      @intheglenn  3 месяца назад

      The plan is to def bump out the garden beds, but for now the kiddos love the grass. In time as they slowly stop using it, I plant to add a modern koi pond close to the house and bump those beds out 3-4 ft. The plans are bursting already and the beds should have no soil by May. Very excited! Thanks for your tips and ideas :0)

    Beautiful gardens! I think if you're planting things that have blooms with interesting shapes or very geometric shapes or plants with growth habits in interesting or bold shapes, the cottage theme will absolutely work with modern architecture!
    I was thinking, "oooh, he should put guara in his garden and then you showed those! 😄 I've had Whirling Butterflies, which is supposed to get 3-4' and would get 4-5' for me here in south central Texas. 😄 I think when you live in a mild climate, plant sizes are more of a suggestion than a rule. 🤣 Those Incrediball hydrangeas are outstanding!! Amazing! Spectacular! You have a really good eye for garden layout and plant selection! Glad I happened across your video, I will definitely check out some of the varieties you mentioned. Very interested in those gardenias as a "boxwood" substitute!

      Deb, thank you.....your kind words are very very appreciated. ❤The garden has a long way to go, but I am very hopeful for next year. YES! When I was looking for inspiration and studying cottage gardens, I noticed most of them were located in zones 4-6. It's easy to tell because their hydrangeas are in full sun and often plants like coral bells and hostas are listed as sun perennials....they would get roasted in full sun here 😆

      After all the rain, half of the backyard was nothing but 3ft weeds bc the small lawn failed when it was so dry. Am now looking at a lawn alternative. Am rambling a bit, so I'll end for now. Thanks again :)
