    My grandmother had one of these, as well as my mother!
    On the inside case, there were red, tassles, a couole of inches long..Silky, soft.. (I have only the inside box now..)
    Always loved these boxes for sentimental reasons both family members gone now..
    I don't think you showed all the products you used, as I remember., for beginners , like me.

      Ahh yes I am guilty of cutting out important parts sometimes 😅 I used a very fine filler for the chips. Black gloss spray paint for the colour. Water based gloss varnish for the top coat. The cleaning was just regular dish soap and water. Navy blue corduroy for the fabric placed in with regular PVA glue.

    Nice job! Was really hoping to hear the music play when you opened the lid. My dad gave me one very similar for Christmas when I was about 8 yrs old, but mine had a tiny dancing ballerina inside who popped up and pirouetted to the music. I think those little rings on the interior lids had red tassel pulls to open the lids.

    • @ejwoodhouserestorations2796

      Thank you very much 🙂 you can listen to the music at the end of the video just incase you missed it! That sounds like a wonderfull gift, do you still have the box? Very interesting, I would have had no idea if you had not told me. Thank you for sharing!😀👍

    • @joacatmcd
      @joacatmcd Год назад +2

      I also know this box, red tassels yes, the box in the video was missing the gadget that starts and stops the music, its also the piece that pops up the dancer when the lid opens. Other things missing (you don't know if not had an original to compare) gold margins around the abalone on lid, gold tracery on inside mirror which is a copy of image thats on top of lid. Alas, that water based finish 'may' fail in time, the original finish is lacquer. That all said, it turned out fabulous! 👍👍👍

    Kudos to you friend! That's quite a project. I acquired one today. I was shocked when I took it apart to find the original Toshiba batteries still inside!
    The music mechanism was wound too tight so off I went...time to give it a new life. Took it apart and pushed on a few things and wallah! Music. Not quite sure what the batteries are for, to magnify the sound I presume.
    Does the box have inlaid abalone on all edges? Mine does. The hinges are kind of goofy. That's where attention is needed the most, and a good cleaning. I also found the original key to the lock on front! Sweet!!
    Anyways, thanks for the post. It gave me confidence to tackle mine.

    • @ejwoodhouserestorations2796
      @ejwoodhouserestorations2796  Год назад

      Sorry for the late reply Susan! Yea it’s a bit finicky restoring these. Wow that’s amazing, I didn’t know they came with batteries I thought they were all wind ups.
      Not too sure why it would have batteries, I would imagine resonance of the box amplifies the sound, but I could be wrong.
      Your lucky to get one with the inlay still intact, I’ve seen ones missing tassels, handles, artwork rubbed off. I’m really not sure if they were made as duplicates of each other or just pieces have gone missing. As most have very different elements about them.
      Anyway I hope it goes well and a i believe you can do it. If you run into any trouble just shoot me a message😀👍

      The mechanism was working without issues before the restoration, just a little dusty. The only thing that was missing was the wire stopper that starts the flywheel when you open the box to have the music play automatically. You can listen to the entire tune at 23:16.

    • @ejwoodhouserestorations2796

      Very much appreciated! ☺️ hmmmm I would try to pry it off with a very thin palette knife. You can use a piece of cloth under the knife to prevent damage. If it’s glued on you may want to try heating it up very carefully, and try gently prying it off. Sometimes damages are inevitable to repair or to gain access.

    • @ejwoodhouserestorations2796
      @ejwoodhouserestorations2796  Год назад +1

      Not a problem at all Ian thank you for watching. That sounds like a tough one. I would try prying it out with a thin palette knife. It’s probably glued on underneath though so I would recommend slowly heating it up and try softening the glue. If not id just remove the mirror entirely by breaking it into small pieces and replacing it. I would recommend trying to clean it first and see if that fixes the issue.

    I am undertaking a similar reatoration including wiring in new led lights (mine has a moving rickshaw and two lights inside), which isnt a problem, but i do have a couple questions about your thoughts on painting:
    For the plain black areas i intend to follow your lead. Some filler along marred edges, a light sanding, a spray paint acrylic paint/primer and possibly some bottled gloss acrylic over that to even up....
    But the top of mine has a gold painted border that is damaged. I was thinking i could just tape off, lightly scuff with fine grit, and put a good opaque enamel or acrylic paint over that. To seal it all, im not sure if i should put a layer of shellac first so i can lightly scuff the whole thing before using a spray on clear acrylic topcoat or just go straight with the acrylic topcoat (im worried that without scuffing, the waterbased acrylic coat might not stick well to whatever the original finisb is. Lacquer?). Your thoughts on that would be really appreciated. Also, mine has pleated pink felt inside that's mostly intact but theres a small stain or two. What would you recommend that might lift the stain without damaging or altering the fabric color? Soft toothbrush with maybe like an oxy-compound for colors or something? Just warm water? (On felt? Feel like it needs to be some sort of dry cleaning agent).
    That being asked, beautiful job man. Please write back!

      I would suggest checking if there is any blockages in the gears, there may be a piece of dust or something similar blocking the turning motion so give it a good clean. You can buy replacement parts if the aftermarket winder seems to be the issue. Here is a link to some common replacement parts www.clockshop.com.au/music-boxes/music-box-parts/
      Also check that the wire stopper isn’t obstructing the flywheel.

    I salute you! 🫡 you have a lot of patience. BTW, I have a round table, app. 40 + cms. It's from Mexico, I believe from the State of Michoacan. This is black, with the same lacquered black paint as the box you fixed, with a beautiful design that starts in the middle, (a huge basket with tons of flowers).
    It belonged to my Mom. But when they moved to another country, the poor table lost a leg, there were 3 legs and there was a long one coming down from under the table's center, and the 3 legs came out from it. Ther have an "S" form and come out like spider legs from the end of that long one. (Hope you understand.)
    One of the S legs is off, it doesn't fit anymore in its place, it seems like it is swollen. The top of the table can be folded and that's what makes it uns-table.
    I brought it home. I put something on the table, and went out, when I came back, it was on the floor. A big chunk of the edge of the table was broken, the paint "fell" 😢 and I kept the table it just because it was my Mom's heirloom to me.
    Could you please tell me what soap you used to clean it and the water + soap ratio?
    What glue can I use to glue the broken leg and part of the round table, too?

      Very much appreciated cris. Ohh no 😞I feel your pain. Repairing this type of damage can be quite difficult id suggest using a reputable restorer as some equipment is needed. However if your willing to give it a shot I will list my suggestions. Use a pva glue, I use titebond 2. You will need to find a way of clamping the broken joints together, you can buy your self some clamps 🗜️ just make sure you get ones with rubber tips and ensure the broken joints are making contact (glue squeezing out) just use regular dish soap and water, a teaspoon in a cup of water is sufficient. Anyway if you have any issues just shoot me a message. 👍🙂

    Hi I wanted to try to contact you about restoring a Chinese Jewlry box I would sell it to you for $40 and you could restore it and sell it for much more. It is missing the doors and hinges and it is much larger than that one in this video.
