Beautiful restoration, I agree with the owner that it was the right call to keep that gorgeous carved seat that replaced the original cane. The finished product was well worth the work it took to get there! Also Hans is such a gorgeous kitty, I adore is little ear fluffs. While I am sure he’s already gotten a bit of an ego please let him know that we think he’s just handsome here. With best wishes from me and my two kitties!
Thank you Kathleen. I do apologise for the delay in response. Haha yes I do have to keep his ego in check, he likes checking his ear fluff in the mirror 🤣 Will do 👍 give a big pet from me to both of your kitties. Best wishes from me and Hans 😺🙂
My grandparents had a few of these chairs - all of them had those pressed/embossed seats, not sure if they were originally cane as I never checked! The blind stamp you couldn't make out was "THONET AUSTRIA".
Very interesting, I wonder if the pressed seats were a factory replacement as the cane seat had a 5 year lifespan. Ahhhh i can read it now! Thank you that, it was really bugging me haha 👍🙂
@@ejwoodhouserestorations2796 I bought 4 of them back in the 70s and they were painted black. A nightmare to strip them. I finally gave up and repainted them white even though I wanted them as natural and beautiful as you made yours. Thank you for the inspiration :)
@@sistersarann3819 I really understand your pain, the paint is unbelievably stubborn. I don’t blame you for painting them. Thank you for sharing, I always love reading other peoples experiences 🙂
Yea the owner is pretty set on the carved seat. I think the solid carved seat is a nice replacement, you can actually still buy these chairs online and customise the seat which is pretty cool 👍🙂
Hi there! Really impressive work, well done. Im currently doing similar chair but i think little bit older as on the label is written Ungvar wich i believe is the previous company. It has quite holes from woodworms but i think they're gone now (still one of the legs doesn't look good). Im not sure to treat it with something or not. Would you recommend that step? Thank you!
Hello! Thank you Radosveta. Very cool! I’m going to check that company out. For any type of tunnelling damage, I’d fill it with epoxy just to make sure the structural stability is maintained. As the leg may already be severely weakened. If your not sure the bugs are gone you can soak the leg in turpentine or methylated spirits for a day.
Beautiful work. I'm trying to restore a similar Thonet chair and this was very helpful. Do you have any recommendations for a stain that would restore the wood to its original finish? Would the jarrah stain you used for the seat be a good option (and how did you dilute it)? Thank you!
Hey Jen, a Jarrah would definitely be similar and look great. Although it was quite dark I think a walnut may look more similar, you would have to do some testing. Be sure to sand at least up to 240grit, or else the stain will pool in deeper scratches. I diluted it with feast Watsons colour reducer, although you can just use mineral spirits it’s basically the same thing. With water based stain just dilute with water. Thank you for watching! 👍🙂
It’s actually good, it’s got a decent sized hopper, however I know it would be better for smaller scale work as you would have to fill it up less frequently. Overall not bad, I’d recommend it.
. @ejwoodhouserestorations2796 Hi! I'm also curious what did you use in the blaster? Was that mineral spirts as well? Or something else...Thanks! I have some old bentwood I'm wanting to strip..
Hello there, you certainly can. I used a satin oil based varnish. The exact product is Cabot’s oil based varnish, I think it’s only made in Australia, but you can use any brand. I diluted it by 10% which I would recommend with all varnishes. 👍🙂
The label you couldn't work out. Try taking a hi res photo, then in Photoshop or similar, turn it negative, or monochrome, and sometimes it reveals more detail, likewise, alter the contrast. If you don't have Photoshop, pm me and I can have a go for you if you wish.
That’s a fantastic idea. I actually do have photoshop, well an old version. I will give it a shot, if I stuff it up happy for you to decode it for me 🙂👍
@@ejwoodhouserestorations2796great, good luck, I have CS6, so equally PSenile! I used to do the same for a pottery collector trying to identify the backstamp on the bottom of pots. Didn't always work but worth a try.

Hello, I am popping in to say that the long stemmed flowers on the seat looked like a stylized version of a Calla Lily, in the center towards the bottom I couldn’t make out if it was meant to be a bow or another flower. If it’s meant to be a flower then it looks like a dogwood blossom as they were quite common on mid century table linens. Fun fact both of those flowers can mean rebirth and resurrection, the Calla Lily can also mean faithfulness and beauty while dogwood blooms mean durability and reliability.
Thonet must be the same colour over all!! Sorry! It is an original and must be one dark colour and visible imprint on the sit. The two colour is specific for Art Deco, a late periode of time!
This is definitely not an original Thonet No. 14 chair. Thonet never used visible screws on the braces from the seat frame to the backrest or on the back chair legs. The screws were always camouflaged and therefore invisible. This is a replica.
I love the wood grain look! Beautiful work.
Thank you Cynthia! I apologise for the delay. 👍🙂
Yes, a great restoration of that bentwood chair. Congrats.
Thanks again curly, very much appreciated 👍🙂
Once again, I throughly enjoy watching talented craftsman give new life to old, yucky pieces. Marvelous job.❤
Cheers Christina, that paint was a bit ghastly looking. Now you can see the pretty wood! 👍
Beautiful work and Thonet bent wood chair.

my thonet rocker was painted black and had a cane seat -- i rocked all my 6 grandsons in it -- all long gone
Sounds like they served you well. I’d love to get my hands on a thonet rocker. Thank you for sharing I enjoyed the read 👍🙂
You truly are a master restorer. I learned some things from this. Nice job.

Looks much better, but a true restoration would have also included weaving a caned seat like it originally had.
Thanks Michael 😀 that is true. The owner was pretty set on keeping the carved seat. I would love to try some weaving though in the future. 👍🙂

*O trabalho ficou muito bom, mas creio que ficaria melhor com a madeira escurecida para seu tom original...*
Thank you Romeu, I can certainly understand your view point. I think a nice walnut would look similar to the old finish 👍

That’s actually a great observation, I’d like to know as well. Would probably need a flower expert as it’s fairly tarnished. 👍🙂
