As an ex restorer- conservator of antique furniture for over 35 years this piece is exactly the type of job I would have relished . Not necessarily for the work involved but rather its provenance and its place in British society at that time.
Wow! The spice box is super cool, but the care, respect, and knowledge you gave is absolutely awesome. I'm so glad You Tube showed me your channel. I'm a new fan, for sure!
It is so refreshing to see that you didn't sand this beautiful little box down to the bare wood and make it look "new" and call that restored! Wonderful job! Bravo! 😊
What an absolute honor to be trusted with something that old and sentimental. I love the care and respect you showed for a relic such as this! Beautiful piece, beautifully restored! ❤❤
This is the first your videos that I've seen, but I'll be following you from now on. It was not only a pleasure to watch; it was also a tutorial, to teach and instruct those of us who are sick of seeing, beautiful wood covered in paint (for profit)! Thank you for sharing your craftsmanship! 👍
When something is that old, it has been reworked on in every inch. Yet it has essentially survived all the warping and wearing being used day after day for 5 centuries . I am so happy to see your painstaking attention to detail and patience in fixing previous mistakes. Wonderful job!
When I seem some of the terrible channels on here with hundreds of thousands of subscribers I am befuddled as to how you have so few. It's a very good channel with some well-considered and skilful restoration. I will do my part and spread the word.
@thecottackworkshop I will tell you why that is - the camera work is very uncomfortable. I don’t want to be critical, but hopefully it will be taken as constructive because I do think the work is good. Like many people, I watch the woodworking videos to relax, and this made my head hurt. Sorry.
I think part of the reason is people want to see a big change... but when the channel actually properly restores old pieces, there isn't a huge change... so people are more likely to watch channels that don't restore the pieces properly but instead go for the big visual change.
Beautifully restored! The best part was you didn’t strip it down n sanded each piece. You left so much of the patina. You fixed areas that could be fixed n done correctly. I love the new little knobs you put on it. I agree they look more original too. I’ve never seen that style so small. Katy must be very proud of this piece. I hope it continues to be passed down in each generation n taken care of with much love. ♥️♥️♥️♥️😊👍👍👍👍🌟
The restoration brings it back to life. Your treatment of this piece was more to its original state. I like the new drawer lining and handles better too. I hope the owner will use it for it's designed purpose. Your work is very good, thank you for talking us through the restoration.
I love to hear you “ talking to yourself” and to let us listen to you working things out and talking us through it. Beautiful job! You’ve just become one of my favourite Chanel’s - along with Thomas Johnson, flipping drawers, AT restoration and Mayfield restoration.
I love to watch craftsman hands as they work on restorations. Their knowledge and care is so obvious in their fluid , careful movements. Baumgarten Art Restorations also has some fascinating videos that show the attention to detail that it takes to repair the wear and tear of time on beautiful pieces. Lovely work, thank you.
Beautifully done. I would have kept with the dark green drawer liners. Your attention to detail and respectful restoration is very admirable. Hard to believe that spices were once SO EXPENSIVE that they had to be kept under lock and key! I loved this video today! Thank you ✨️
Beautiful restoration! Truly lovingly done! A personal story about the white paint flecks being on every item... Many years ago I worked at store that sold firearms. Almost every antique firearm had those same paint flecks. Always white. It was so rare to see them without the white paint flecks we would actually point out "hey, no white paint on this one!"
Ohhh I’m so glad I stumbled across your channel with this video! Keep them coming - you are incredibly talented and so respectful of the piece’s history 😊
That is true master craftsmanship. Very sympathetically restored and ready for another few hundred years. How many would just have sanded the history away and varnished it in a 21st century façade. Toffee also seemed to approve … 🐈
Absolutely beautiful and you did an excellent job in restoring it. This could be a museum piece. Great piece of history. I enjoyed the video. Thank you.
Such an interesting restoration to watch. All the thought and planning you put into this spice box, its history, fascinating! Thank you for sharing this I was thoroughly invested in you completing the project and not destroying the patina. Really wonderful video and wonderful restoration!
Nice restoration and it was ready for it, I used to be in Antique trade and a nice giveaway for its age showed itself whilst i was looking at the small drawers and any old antique dealers will have spotted what i am saying but not giving anything away and if you dont know you dont, but a very nice early piece.
I found you somehow and amazing work. I like how you maintain the originality and leave the patinas of the years. I watch a person that has a cat just like you but his is a kitten.
This was so interesting. I loved seeing your conservative approach with this piece. You stabilized and cleaned it while respecting it's age and patina. Subscribed!
That is a lovely old piece Bruce and you've done a wonderful job of restoration on it. Brought back to life without loosing any of its previous past. Good call on the drawer pulls. I can imagine that the owner was very pleased with the result. Toffee seemed to think that you'd done a good job too! Thanks for the upload.
That piece would be right at home in some of the preserved houses in my backyard, Newport, RI. My mothers forebears (Laughton / Lawton) came here with a grant from Chuck I, circa 1638. A great correct restoration. Narragansett Bay
First time visiting your channel, and now I’m hooked! Beautiful restoration. Will share with my family. I gave my sister an antique spice box a few years ago and she loves it. She will love your channel.
Your cat said that those pulls need to be removed. He’s a cutie! Well Done Restoration. Gentle, respectful and understanding the history of the piece requires that the flaws must be preserved too.
It's so nice to see how such wonderful old furniture can shine again. A person who understands this and achieves it with skill and expertise is a master of his trade. Masters, it's a pleasure to watch you. PS: more bonus points for the pretty cat. I love cats!😍😻
Good job. Split pin pulleys would probably have been the most appropriate handles for the drawers. Thanks to your work the beautiful Spice Box has gained another 369 years of life. Thanks for sharing the step-by-step restoration process. I'm looking forward to enjoying your videos. Cheers
This is the first time I’ve seen a spice cabinet, know they must have been existing, the only one near is it the apothecary box. Thanks for sharing such a unique piece
I don't even know where to begin... First, I just discovered your channel, and I'm so glad I did. I love how you preserve the piece. Phenomenal work. And, lastly, your cat is beautiful ❤ Can't wait to watch more!
Hello from Texas, USA. Wonderful job. Such care taken on preserving the history of the piece. I'm watching you on T.V. while creating future heirloom quilts on my 1910 Singer Lotus treadle machine. It sews beautifully but the cabinet needs help. The top looks terrible but I can live with that for now. It was manufactured in Scotland, so it's been on quite a journey.
Fantastic to hear - have you seen my Singer restorations? I'm guessing so. They are wonderful to work with and I'm so glad you are getting use out of one now.
This has to be the coolest furniture restoration I've ever seen. I really wasn't thrilled when you said you were going to leave the unoriginal pulls; so when you realized there was a problem with them and you opted for replacing them, I looked forward to what you were going to replace them with. Those little pulls you put in are delightful. I think it would be a conversation piece anywhere it was taken. Did the owner tell you what she was going to put in it?
Very well done! I was not sure about watching the video but I loved it. You took such care and appeared to know what you were doing. The result is great. Learnt a lot and also bought some Murphy's for the pieces I want to work on to get them ready. Must have taken a while to reduce all the work to just a 41.19 video. Have subscribed. Hope to watch and learn some more. Thanks.
That is nicely done. Very beautiful. Since the pulls were added latter and you replaced the inside ones, I think you should have replaced the one on the outside door also to match the new ones on the inside.
Yes I agree - I have a spare pull and want the owner to agree but I am also conscious they have had the old cabinet on display for decades and “remember” the old style. I’ll leave it to them but agree with you!
Absolutely fascinating to watch this respectful restoration. I'm a spice blender and would love a cabinet llike this. Currently my spice box is a silky oak sideboard though, and full to bulging 😂😂
This is my mum's cabinet. She's delighted with the repair and we're so glad to see it restored. Many many thanks. Katy
Hi Katy - your so welcome, I am really happy it will have a good home
What a lovely heirloom! I hope you add your own note for history.
@@TheCottackWorkshopcan you please tell me what you put on the paper? You said you preserved it.
@@fdort3971 I didn't add anything to the paper, simply left it in place untouched.
@@TheCottackWorkshop thanks
Most people that do restorations want to make the piece new. The age is what makes the piece special. Thank you for not going to those extremes.
