    Hi, let me give you some info on your chest? the chest is Victorian c1870 made out of yellow pine which would of been scrumbeld to look like Oak/Mahogany/Walnut, Basically it's was a poor mans chest that couldn't afford the real thing, The beading round the drawers was put on at a later date, The turned feet have been cut down and they have added wooden drawer nobs (which are Victorian) to make the length up, These chests are worth a lot of money in original condition because many of them have been stripped over the years to the natural pine and waxed because it was fashionable at the time

      I was getting ready to comment that the beaded trim was almost certainly added later, My mom used the same trim in the 70s to “decorate” the doors on an old cabinet she refinished

    Handsome Piece! A Little too Dark for Me Personally but You Really made the Wood Grain Shine! So Nice. The New Handles aren't Quite right. Too Flat. I Think Something Similar in Size and Shape to the Originals but in Metal. You Make a Very Good Spokesperson (Yes I did watch the Commercial)! I'm not Surprised, You have a Great Positive Attitude and Communication Skills! Mmmm, Cookie!😊😀🍪🍪🍪😋

    It doesn’t look good. You should apply first pre stain conditioner after sanding. This step prevents blotching.

      @flipitnation  3 месяца назад +2

      I think it looks as I was hoping, your opinion of it not looking good is quite rude but I'm a big boy and my feelings are not hurt 😂 A lot of the blotching was due to leaving intentionally leaving some of the original patina. But yes, a conditioner sounds like something I will consider next time. Cheers

    While you have done a good job with cleaning & preserving, the stain seems to have a lot of color variance, which is not typical to Victorian finishes. Pine, maple, & a few other woods commonly have this problem when stained. A coat of shellac under the stain, as a general rule, will help to even out the stain variance. However, you likely need to apply some toner or a color finish coat to unify the stain color. There were pieces of Victorian furiture that had wooden knobs. Because the piece has faux coloring to mirror a more expensive wood, they were likely metal with a Victorian style.

    Looks horrible. The stain is terrible, patchy and too dark. The wooden border around the drawers needs to be removed, it’s not original. Brass handles don’t match.

      Aren’t you a treat. For someone that likes cats, I’m surprised you don’t have an ounce of kindness in your approach. Just nasty. It’s a shame your attempt at tearing me down brings you a sense of gratification.

    I think this is quite the remarkable result, given the starting point. I like the hardware. Excellent stain choice to mask some of the challenging bits of this piece. I wonder if those two wooden pieces above the drawers are original.

      Thank you very much! I wondered that too, they were made from oak and were covering some imperfections so likely not original. Cheers :)

    Hand sawn dovetails! Cool! Dont give up on the old locks. They are pretty simple, and over the years i have collected old keys at sales, junk shops etc. i can almost always find a key that fits now. Enough oil and the locks usually start to work. Then i take my old key to a lock shop and get a copy. Came out great! I would switch over to flat head screws when you get around to it, those old knobs will be just the thing on another piece. You have great taste!

    It certainly looks better than before.
