    The whole "you can only build on top of Windows" and "you can change anything in Linux" thing perfectly displays the difference between the two. With Windows, Microsoft just kept building on top of legacy code and they never did a full rewrite, and they never designed Windows NT to be anything but a GUI OS in a way they've seen it, but that led to a certain standard being established which is why something like AutoHotkey can exist.
    Linux is a CLI OS at heart that just so happens to be able to do GUI work because anything can be tacked on top of it, which gives immense freedom as to how you want to build your OS, but it also leads to it being an unstandardized chaos. The X11 vs Wayland debacle comes to mind. This is something as simple as rendering windows, but it's a divisive problem in the community. On Windows you just have DWM, it does the job and that's about it.
    Both of these approaches have their own benefits and drawbacks, and none of them is superior. They both serve different purposes for different use cases.

      DWM is better than DWM.
      DWM has tiling, monocle mode, float, tagging, and is incredibly fast.
      DWM has workspaces (like tagging, but less versatile) and is preinstalled with Windows.
      The only benefit Windows has is native pro apps. I say that as someone who has used Windows at least twice as long as I've used Linux-based OSes. Windows peaked at 7 and has been getting worse and worse ever since.

      @@encycl07pedia- DWM =/= DWM. On Windows it's a display server. On Linux it's a window manager. On Linux I'd have to consider if I want to go with X11 or Wayland, on Windows I don't have that issue, the more restrictive nature of it has standardized the basics, and Linux seems to be allergic to any form of standardization at a detriment of it's usability.

    • @encycl07pedia-
      @encycl07pedia- Месяц назад

      @@supra107 The problem is you're treating GNU/Linux as one OS when it's actually many. There's a lot of overlap, sure, but to act like they're all the same is not accurate. You're rarely going to run into usability issues due to lack of standardization if you only use one family (most are based on either Debian, Slackware, or Red Hat). Even then, the initial install is a boilerplate that you can rebuild any way you like. It'd be weird, but you can add yum and remove apt as a package manager, for example.
      I've only used Wayland on one install and the only reason I noticed it is because it said so on the login screen. X11 is still the main standard (AFAIK), though Wayland is growing. That's not nearly the issue you think it is. I mean for stuff like viewing photos (fim, links2) or playing videos (mplayer) I often just use framebuffer without even loading up a display server. I've had entire computing sessions that lasted hours without one.
      I'm having to use Windows 11 at work. It's so much slower. It feels like trying to run with 20-pound ankle weights. I even installed FancyWM to try to mitigate time spent resizing/reordering windows, but it's still a definitively worse experience than DWM.

    I have gone through a couple of rounds trying to daily drive Komorebi, not because it wasn't working and I didn't enjoy it but just because I couldn't figure out how to configure it properly. I am currently giving it another shot and having more success and it feels so nice finally having a tiling workflow on Windows. I am a huge fan of the project and hope it continues to be developed. I think its worth giving a shot for anyone who feels comfortable with the configuration process.

    OpenSuse is the only distro that can handle all my hardware. I have the latest and greatest hardware. Including audio DAC and 3 x 4k Monitor. One monitor need to be "portrait" And flipped. I did try 10+ top distros. Only opensuse fit my needs. Very solid distro and detect every hardware and work well in virtual environment as well. (hyper-V) and v,ware workstation. I will add that my dealy driver is windows server as workstation, 2nd is opensuse

    I use an AHK script to run NirCmd on startup to disable the taskbar completely, then I have a few different Rainmeter skins in my collection that can act as customizable "taskbar replacements" (I just use Win+Tab or Alt+Tab to cycle between open windows). Pair that with PowerToys Run and you have a clean distraction-free setup far from the default Windows experience.

    • @WVWVW1
      @WVWVW1 4 месяца назад

      AHK? NirCmd? What do you recommend to use with Rainmeter for a cleaner experience?

    • @massgrave8x
      @massgrave8x 4 месяца назад

      @@WVWVW1 AHK = AutoHotKey. Right now in Rainmeter I'm using Droptop.
      NirCmd you can find online, it's just a CLI executable that you can run with all kinds of parameters to do different things. I created a batch file that runs on startup, mine looks like this, which will disable the taskbar entirely:
      "C:\Program Files\NirCmd
      ircmd.exe" win trans class Shell_TrayWnd 256
      Running the following instead will restore the taskbar back to normal:
      "C:\Program Files\NirCmd
      ircmd.exe" win trans class Shell_TrayWnd 255
      I use AHK to trigger each (plus a few other things) using custom hotkeys so I can bring the taskbar back if I need it.

    6:14 About long paths, I was reading the source code of a script, and the other was a code that was checking if the path was a long path or a normal path and based on that if was doing some things. So, if that's the case I think changing it to a long path by default would be a breaking change.

    Such an amazing bit of meta-commentary there.
    Thank you for this analysis. I’ve been learning about tiling window managers and thinking it would greatly increase my productivity, but I’m stuck on Windows because of work. Looking for a solution and this looks like it can help, even if its’s more of a Coors Light solution.

    Your comparison of Windows vs. Linux and the experiences on each are what I try to market of "functional" versus "drop-in" replacement. Linux can do anything Windows can do (functional), and more, typically, but it won't work or feel the same way (drop-in).

    How did you get Powershell to load in only 600ms? It's takes over a second on my 5800X. Compare to konsole with fish on Linux in about 100ms.

    The main reason to not enable long path in windows is because a lot of apps are designed and only work with this path limit. This fix only affects explorer. Sure, you can now create a 500 character path, but excel will fail after 218 no matter what.
    Windows does not enable this by default, because it thinks allowing users to create/move files with explorer that wont work if opened is a bad idea. And I agree, non technical users should not have it enabled, particularly because non technical users are constantly using excel and similar programs that will probably poop the bed if they try to use paths longer than 200.
    Even for technical users, I dont really care. no sane directory structure I have ever seen uses anywhere near 255.

    I used to run some Japanese tiler along with the LiteStep shell most of the alternative Windows shells and window managers died during the transition to 64bit.
    I remember asking about it on the LiteStep and BlackBox mailing lists/forums about the time XP x64 came out.
    Basically, everyone was waiting for everyone else to start working on the wow64 crap. In the end it all started way too late most just gave up or switched to Linux.

    i dont understand linux people's obsession with windows tiling. wayland cant even display VSTi plugins correctly. whats the point having all the VSTi window tiled when you cant even click on any buttons in it? blame wine, right? anybody doing professional music productions could make their protools/cubase/ableton works properly in linux? i mean everybody in windows have been making music for ages without tiling windows ability. what about audio crackles? it seem that you could get audio crackles even if you use 700 dollars CPUs in linux. do linux have proprietary drivers for the most commonly used sound cards in audio mastering realm? i mean, systemd even haywires because i plugged in a windows based USB modem. how do you expect, professional in any entertainment industry could ever in linux make use of the hardwares/softwares that only have windows supports?
    how about doing artwork design? does that ever need tiling any windows? is tiling windows boost workflows? i could only think it makes sense for coders. as for those who work in multimedia work , they only want their window to be in its CORRECT SCALE/aspect ratio. they rather use multiple monitors for multiple window. imagine that you would have to fit VSTi interface(which have their own aspect ratio) into whatever window aspect ratio and cram it using wayland along a mixer interface window that being forced to view in vertically extended window into the SAME MONITOR. just ask yourselves this, WHY DONT PROTOOLS/CUBASE/ABLETON HAS ANY LINUX SUPPORTS?
    im not even a tinkerer. the only thing i want to customize is just the theme. but one thing for sure is, i cant find linux supports for stuff i need to use. and if i force it to use windows ones with wine , it will have problems. this isnt about just gaming. i just provide one example from music production standpoint.
    i dont think my critics will push anybody in linux to finally complete linux. the mentality simply isnt there in linux developers thats why most linux components technically still in "ALPHA" the entire time. i wonder when will linux OS finally have a finished product.
    people who havent used linux didnt know that things have been like this FOREVER in linux. linux is the OS that never got completed. hardware companies reluctant(beside AMD) to support linux because linux technically HAS NO PRODUCT. there is technically NO real OS product in linux platform yet. they all a "work in progress". for decades. and the denials are too strong.
    also, just maybe, maybe those evil employers in red hat who pushes their coders to finish certain tasks at an imperative time limit actually WANTS to see their OS COMPLETED. maybe. thats makes me can also be considered evil by linux devs. for nagging them to complete linux. i just want people in the world to move out of microsoft's clamping.

      Having windows get out of your way is cool. Either I need a window besides another window so I open it in the same workspace, or I need it (basically) fullscreen so I open it in a new workspace. My text editor is fully keyboard driven as is my browser with an extension, so I don't need a mouse for coding - usually. I do agree though: you will not have a great experience in mouse focused apps (if that makes sense) and ableton is such app imo. You use the keyboard for shortcuts, yes, but you can't fully use the Program with a keyboard.
      (speculation, idk if this is true ->) There is more money in the other 2 popular Desktop OS alternatives. The things that are made for linux is often made by a dedicated community with.... less financial support. So... comparing them might be a bit.. ambitious.

    • @supra107
      @supra107 4 месяца назад

      If you're delving into music producing, you're not going to use Linux, and you're definitely not going to use a tiling window manager. You're gonna go with either Windows or Mac. And that's fine, because Linux isn't meant for every use case imaginable.

  • @akashtriz

    At Chris Titus,
    Bro make your own free to use tiling manager b4 criticizing a noble minded dude who has made so much efforts for the community of windows 11 users.
    I get that you run your windows in a VM and can tile it using your Arch+whatever tiling manager setup but thats hardly doable on most average windows laptops.
    Lots of Linux distros still have printer setup issues and many clients need windows app support and development than for linux apps.
    So I am sticking to windows and komorebi on my lappy.
    Also before hating on the gaps, check the man pages, there are ways to lessen the komorebi gaps as of latest Komorebi version.
