MY GOO!
There's a lot of important bands that people never give credit to when it comes to the multiple different levels of Midwest emo. For old school Midwest emo, the band Seam is NEVER mentioned or even acknowledged, and they were godfathers when it comes to the creation of Midwest emo. Having music that ranges from soft, twinkly guitars with spoken, whispery vocals, to heavy distorted guitars, all played in alternate tunings and open tunings. They were doing this all the way back in 1990, and with Sooyoung Park even showing signs of it in his previous band Bitch Magnet all the way back in the late 80s. For the Midwest Revival scene there is the band Make Me, who, as far as I've researched seem to be the first to combine noodly, twinkly guitars with the raw heavy screaming. They were maybe singlehandedly the reason for Merchant Ships, Midwest Pen Pals, etc existence, with Merchant Ships referencing them in one of their songs "Emo Songs" using the lyrics "suck it up, baby boy" from Make Me's song "Snail Trails." Using it in the same exact composition and style as Make Me. As well as having in their Myspace bio "Do you like Make Me?". The guitarist, Nick Stutsman from those bands also would go to the shows that Make Me and Boy Problems (Make Me's Danny Sgrizzi and Harrison Bergeron's Kevin DeFranco's band after Make Me broke up) and ask them about all of their tunings and play styles.
this a monument bro
I like this pivot, Dan. Keep em coming.
Swiss Army Wife mentioned 🙌
Thank you Fran Dampton!
I laughed a little too long at AmericanMike99 and capNtim2k tbh I could see them using those names as legit gamer tags lol
Awakebutstillinbed and Home Is Where remind me of Joan of Arc, Tim Kinsella’s band after Cap’n Jazz; members are switched around depending the needs of the song and sometimes another band is made just fit some the sound of certain songs, still with a rotating door of members.
Another fun note about Tim and Mike Kinsella is that while Mike embraced and jokes about the term emo at his Owen shows, Tim like Guy Picciotto, rejects the term and being associated with it…all while flipping his hair out of his face and writing songs about being weird, alone and wanting to d1e lol
Great video! Loved it!
Hiw & absib forever ❤
Quinn from red sun. This is gnarly
Dude! I've been bumping best buds like crazy these days
@@danframpt0n so cool to me that people know we exist. I need more long form emo content please‼️‼️‼️
23:33 k that’s the best band name ever
🥞🥞🥞 amazing job, awesome video 🥞🥞🥞
Hey CF1
Midwest emo musical skill level:
Guitar: Berklee level knowledge
Bass: start learning it at the age of 1 minute
Drums: must be at least as skilled as Steve Gadd, Mangini and Bozzio to write one song
Vocals: *let’s just rip off Blink 182 for every band*
Seriously….
This is good shit.
A bit late but lets not forget just how much midwest emo has spread. You mentioned White Surf n such, but its even made its way to Russia! Bands like Bird Bones and Aesthetics Across The Color Line are gonna go down in history.
Emo is the best genre 🔥🔥🔥
Let’s get cookin
6:30 Emo was coined by Thrasher Magazine as a new label for the Revolution Summer bands. Many may kniw if Ian Mackay making a comment about that exact thrasher article while playing an Embrace show.
Thanks for the run down of the scene...
But...
Pop Punk started in the 80's in the USA? Wrap your ears around "Singles going Steady" from The Buzzcocks. Formed Manchester, UK, late 1970's (because they were putting together a gig and needed as support band). Also consider The Undertones and The Skids (though their scottish accents may need translation). The form is pretty much crystalised by them.
Man, hot mulligan GET me
.………………………………………END GANG
I have a pretty good emo accent
Is that Shannon from awakebutstillinbed on the cover?
It sure is
Wird..🦅,or for the lack of a better...
Home is where have their comments turned off on the channel why?
I never realized American football was that old. I thought that shit came out in like 2015
My friend has a midwest emo band called livestock who id recommend checking out
My goo! Hahahahaha
Great vid! Redbars waiting tho
for what, though 🤔
Love awake, but they’re from San Jose, not Berkeley. Did a couple shows in Berkeley though 😅
she moved and now claims Berkeley
After watching this I felt Ike you missed some bands that could bridge the gaps and have done stuff that you didn’t think were done before. You should check out Algernon Cadwallader, Saetia, Comadre, La Bella.
🫡
Saetia for sure ... Legendary
Why do people always forget about Mineral T_T
erm what about the 2020s popularization of skramz and emo violence? ☝️🤓
Funny to mention storytelling and not mention Tim Kasher or Cursive.
Cursive just dropped a new album for Run For Cover Records
A shame you skipped all of the late 2000s to early 2010s bands that dominated the DIY - snowing, street smart cyclist, cstvt, into it over it, prawn, tiny moving parts, grown ups, algernon cadwallader, merchant ships, glocca mora just to name a few (also mostly Philly)
😭😭😭
@@danframpt0n enjoyed the vid though. mostly throwing it out there for the kids new to the genre watching your vids so they can check out those bands.
🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞
🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞
cool video! check out my Chicago band Rotundos. its like shoe gaze/midwest emo post-hardcore.
I can not express how much I can't stand hardcore music haha I need melody.. Jaz Coleman said it the best in 1980 I need the melody makes me feel human I I I
sucks for you hardcore has some of the greatest records ever made
modern baseball has little to no musical connection to midwest emo, doesnt make sense to call it that
if you really want to label bands as "midwest revival" bands like snowing, algernon cadwallader, old gray, midwest pen pals seem more fitting.
the reason why people call bands like modern baseball or the front bottoms midwest emo is because these bands gained popularity outside of the DIY scene, and uninitiated people think any DIY emo is midwest emo
also its kind of reductive to reduce 90s emo to the kinsella brothers, American Football was NOT the genre defining midwest emo album everyone says it is, it was a step away from EMO and post hardcore if anything, it did go on to influence emo bands to come but the album itself is barely emo, indie if anything.
24:51 I need to change my name to trshcanjam
I have never liked MCR
