You're using Nether Portals Wrong

- Nether Portals let you move at 8x the speed, so doing the fastest travel method in the nether should be the fastest way to travel...right?
In this video we discuss possible optimizations for traveling in Minecraft that although simple, I haven't seen anyone take advantage of.

Re: "What about boats on blue ice?"
In the overworld, blue ice boats only go ~73 m/s, but a maxed dolphin tunnel goes 144 m/s.
In the nether: with the portal cooldown, blue ice boats are still slower up to a distance of 1500 blocks (which is too long to build a tunnel anyway, past that, just use the nether)
WITHOUT the portal cooldown - yes, blue ice boats are faster. But you would need to set up a system in which you could seamlessly ride between portals. This was added after the video, hence why its not mentioned.
Sorry but dolphin tunnels in the nether are the fastest of all.
😭
Try making one and come back to me
@@the2bros693glitch the water, make a tube, bring dolphins. Voila
Isn’t a boat on blue ice in the nether far better than a dolphin tunnel?
Of course there’s always that ~16 second portal time… but 600m/s (75m/s times 8 due to nether travel) is unmatched over long distances.
Dolphin tunnels are extremely expensive and one of the most annoying things to build. Nobody’s using “Nether portals wrong”… Blue Ice boat nether hubs are just way better than Dolphin tunnels.
For long distances, yes. Blue ice is better, but only past 1500 blocks. Anything under and dolphin tunnels are still faster. In 1.21, the portal cooldown can be removed, thus making blue ice boats better if you have a seamless portal-boat system.
@@ntader but what if we made a dolphin tunnel in the nether say to travel 5000 blocks in the nether so 40000 blocks in the over world well how fast would that be?
@@The_Lelouch can you get water into the nether?
@@shreychaudhary4477 Yes you can. Create your world in 1.12 and do falling block overwriting then update the world to 1.20. You can then move the water wherever you want in the nether using flying machines. Kind of janky but definitely worth doing for a lot of reasons. (not because of this absolutely stupid dolphin tunnel idea, just use an ender pearl stasis chamber, they're super easy to build.)
@@poppinlochnesshopster3249 at that point just make the stasis in the overworld
thank you man now i am going to go build a dolphin tunnel that let's me travel 6900 blocks in 20 seconds 👍
👍
Nether travel starts to be good when the travel distances get 4 or more digits long.
Especially nether ice subways between the spawn and player bases
This video may need an update with 1.21 - in which if you are on an entity portals drop the 4 second wait. Also a minecart is an entity and will keep momentum.
6:44 ntader has evolved to be capable of fighting his brother and a chicken at the same time
Does anyone use the nether to travel less than like 500-1000 blocks?
I sometimes use it to drop down deep in caves quickly, but it’s a one way trip down
The realm I’m in connects spawn which is around -200 x and 0 z with -1700 x 100 z and -3000 x -200 z using nether portals. It turns a 10 minute walk into a 1 minute walk
I was sure this channel had 100k+ subs... but damn....
well deserved man! Worth a sub!
Welcome to the channel!:)
As always, another AMAZING video! Thanks so much for all the good content so far!
Thank you so much for making this bro!!! I was actually thinking about the in depth details of travel in minecraft and thinking about making the same calculations you did. Thank you so much again!!
Glad it helped!
IMHO this is unfair, that minecarts is so slow
1.21.2 snapshots teasing a potential top speed of 1 km/s (or 8 km/s effectively in the Nether with no portal cooldown). Probably won't happen, but a man can dream...
@@GSBarlev 8 km per second it is like enough to go to orbit :-)
hey nice video, but the same could be said about ice boats or other methods that dont stop your movement, but slow it. its less of an effect, but it still effects shorter distances
Thats true, and a very good point. I should’ve been more general in that section, but it applies to other methods as well
With the new snapshot the 8 second load time is now gone.
Yup, now for short distances just pull oud a minecart with a nether portal
Getting in a vehicle and then through the portal then out of it then enter the transport method then get in another vehicle then enter the portal then out is probably not very convenient though
Amazing calculations done at 4:04!!! Thank you for the calculations, they were extremely helpful!!!
Im glad you were able to follow! That was a tricky one!!!
BROOOO, get this man more consistent viewers. you deserve it. this video was great.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it:)
I thought everyone knew not to take a flight to visit your local walmart.
its the same idea.
I built a dolphin pathway for going 50 block (it's in my storage system). while it will probably never save the amount of time that I spent making it it is really fun.
I argue that setting up a dolphin tunnel to go 2,000 blocks is slower than just running/jumping/walking the distance without having to build the tunnel.
Yeah but it saves you time when you use that road more than 5 times.

warning future viewers: there is infact a post-credits scene after 0:41!! Thank you ntader for the extra content!
i found this when i was searching "join my google meet" on youtube and picked last hour... lol anyways good video
I did not expect this to be how your voice would sound, 👍not bad, also thanks for the info
Amazing video as always! Now i just have to replace the hundreds of nether portals with just a couple of dolphin tunnels...
This will be a pain, but it's fineee
Good luck!
@@ntader Thank you lol!
This video is about to blow up. Glad I'm early!
that's some high quality Minecraft content
Now the penalty is gone if you’re riding something
Bruh who even uses nether portals to travel 100 blocks?
A serious min-maxer.
It would have been really helpful for the demonstration if you just made a graph, the sheets and picture works well, it would just have been a bit more clear, but it was still a great video!
I thought about it! The problem I had was that some intercepts would be super far out (nether portals at 2000), and I had a hard time making the graph look good and readable for the video:( But youre right, graphs would have worked too, thanks for your comment!
@@ntader Tried to make my own and i see what you mean now
You can easlily make a chunk loader with a portal and minecarts as well
Just make a dolphin tunnel in the nether and you can have light speed travel
No water :(

@@ntader you kinda forgot you can place ice in the nether, and boats move very fast on ice. Many servers have those nether ice subways

Riding pig = fastest travel, (when you apply tnt)
This is the type of research they should be doing in schools 😤
so much hate, it might not be practical but very well put together video and definitely useful for long term servers
@@Iceyze Thanks!
thank you for such useful information, without you, Id still be traveling 32 block via a nether portal 4 blocks away, but now that I know how slow it is I wont do it anymore
you missed a chance to use some linear graphs for the more mathsy viewers but still cool
dolphin tunnels in the nether be like
underrated
I just use nether Portales to get from my base to the neather to the end faster
So would rails through the nether be faster than rails in the overworld?
Most likely, yes
n00ber portal
what is a dolphin tunnel???
Does any of this apply at all when portal cooldown's turned off ?
Ehh not as much. Much easier to figure out without the cooldown

You made an 8 minutes long video with lots of shots and editing and voice over to tell us that nether portal is only worth it if you're travelling long distances. Else use elytra with rockets.
You're welcome everyone.
