NOT TRUE. One time i pulled into a gas station and this guy just started to pick through trash as I got out of my car. Kept going at it until I got back in my car and left. As I'm leaving, he conveniently stops and leaves the trash can empty-handed. I realized he did this on purpose to make me feel sorry for him from a distance. Even if they're really homeless, 95% of the time in miami they will spend it on booze or crack cocaine. Other 5% is food.

The lines are long. And REAL homeless family's come for food and supplies. Then you get the people in rich clothes and care who get in line because their greed won't let them pass up something free. These idiots spoil it for the real ones in need. We had a non profit clothing donation box in Fla. Set up for drive through donations. It was getting robbed. We set up a camera. A gift card for food or other needs is better because sometimes people won't eat food that is given to them because of possible contamination... However, we did offer a piece of Apple pie from a restaurant to a guy flying a sign & he refused it. That one I did call the Sheriff on. The Sheriff asked where the Apple pie was & then where the guy was. My husband was physically blocked by 5 police officers from entering a Surgeons Office he had an appointment with in the United States. We've been held at gun point & threatened to be shot by police in the United States near where an Australian citizen was murdered by police. I wear scar's on the back of my head from when I nearly lost my life shortly after the kidnapping of my children and the theft of my identity at that time. My husband has 6 Bronze Star's among other Honors. We asked for the criminals living in my husband's 4 bedroom house to be arrested but the criminals were living in the beautiful home so they must be the nice people. Wrong Wrong Wrong!!! My husband's first wife is among the missing...not maybe you don't remember who you slept next to for over 20 years. Even since the first of the year someone else has been shopping for a vehicle using our contact information in the same County my husband's first wife was last seen alive. @Jordan Jess I think ppl are concerned that the "next job" is more panhandling, when other options are open. i.e.: I worked at a great shelter where we took in families/women, (men stay at the S.ARMY) for a month. It's a large, remodeled home, and the clients signed a contract to agree to look for work. The home provided all meals, clothing, childcare, diapers, etc. for 30 days. All money earned at the job went into a savings acct. After 30 days, it was used as a deposit to transition into an apartment across the street. If the clients could stand on their own, they were moved into NEW duplexes, with all deposits paid, etc. It was so nice to see ppl who were living in their cars come in out of the cold & end up in new homes, all via charity.☺ Good luck to you.💗

I won't give these people money but I will offer them food. I once had a young man approach me when I walked out of Walgreens and he asked me for some money so he could get something to eat. I gave him the 2 McDonald's Breakfast Meals I had bought for my daughters. He broke down in tears and started eating. I reached into my wallet and gave him some cash. That's the only time I've given money because I knew without a doubt he was truly suffering. But this woman begging the walmart lot hit me again a week later out of gas again and I told her to GTFO of the lot as I took her picture and told her I'm showing it to security!
Well her car a nice Ford F250 sure did lay the rubber down as she put the pedal down. I also got the tag nu ber and all the walmarts have her picture, truck color, make and tag.

I have an interesting story for you. I spent the last 17 years of my life pursuing addictions. I was sheltered by my rich parents and it got to a point where I was kicked out and became homeless for 2 years. I slept on sidewalks, lived in shelters, ate out of trash cans, was prey for the drug dealers and gang members, and lived with no hope. Anytime anyone saw me down and out and gave me food or money I cried cause I saw someone actually cared. Today I am 5 and 1/2 months clean off of drugs and I'm a psychology student.
Being homeless is no joke. Most people who become homeless stay that way. I think a good punishment for these scammers would be forced to help the homeless or be homeless themselves for a given time.
When you're homeless all the things you took for granted before your dilemma become very hard to come by. Want a shower? Good luck with that. Want a place to go to the bathroom? There's a fence in an alleyway with your name on it. It's freezing cold outside and you might die from hypothermia? Well, most people think you are worthless and if you die your body probably wont be found anytime soon and you'll end up in a morgue with no name and your loved ones will forever wonder where you went off to.

This was the most degrading thing I ever experienced & had to do to survive. The looks and comments I got were humiliating. I did, however, receieve & appreciated the kindhearted generosity of many people, & I now volunteer & do alot of humanitarian work to give back and help others, the way so many did for me. I am now successful, have a family, & have peace in my heart. I find this disgusting & disturbing. I just do not understand the mindset of such people, especially those portraying to be Vets. I knew some very humble, lovable homeless Vets, & to even think someone would take enduring the trauma they have been through for personal gain is truly appalling. My heart goes out to all the beautiful, yet tradgic lives I had the privilege of being friends with and knowing while my time homeless. @@Bree128MOST of these people are on social security disability, plenty of them abuse drugs while on social security disability which would explain where their money goes and then there is legit homeless people and usually you can tell really easily!
I was homeless living out of my 2017 Ford fiesta while working full time but I still had a few places to stay occasionally and I didn't even have the time to stand on a street corner asking people for money! (CHILD SUPPORT) is why I rarely have a steady home plus undiagnosed (REAL) health problems so I keep losing jobs and since my problems are real and not an act doctors will not help me, they would rather put dead beats on welfare and social security for (nutty problems) they do not have any prescribe them drugs they can and often do sell which would explain the new vehicles that some of these people have but ironically do not work plus the panhandling probably adds up and since these people are losers with no lives they don't mind begging for money! I look at my situation a lot differently, I call off of work because of chronic (pain) no employer cares because no doctor will write out anything explaining my circumstances and family court doesn't care so they just take 55% of my income and also give it to my ex who does not work a real job at least but will (babysit) here and there since the best she can do is play house all her pathetic life.
My opinion is if you hand out money you should only be doing this in front of a homeless shelter or you should be able to tell that, that person looks homeless and has a (tent) they're living out of or they're staying out of their car and with a little bit of walking and talking it shouldn't be hard to get a read on them...

They don't pay income tax, use ebt to feed themselves, and steal anything else they need but can't get for free through assistance programs so they're not paying any taxes on anything. All the money they get from handouts goes to their drug habit. Usually a large portion of their ebt gets traded for drugs too, $2 of food stamps is worth $1 of whatever their chemical of choice is.

In my lengthy years of experience, I have discovered there are two types of homeless people. 1. The Economically disadvantaged, and 2. the Career homeless. The economically disadvantaged will not be panhandling, they will be accepting anything they can get. The career homeless are the ones who choose to be in the charade because, as one career homeless guy once told me, "I can get up to $300 per day and I only have to worry about my food and my beer." The career homeless have one objective, separate you from your money. And they will use any device to do it. A crutch, a wheel chair, a leg brace worn outside of the pants, a stutter, and a made up deformity. My advice, follow your heart, but be aware of these facts.

I was a first responder for almost 20 years. 99% of "homeless" people want to be where they are. I know many would argue but I've actually gone and sat down and talked with them. They all have interesting stories...if they're really true. I understand that it's the nature of most human beings to want to help others they perceive as needing help, so I get it. Folks would do well to remember that (if you have a job) you are paying a large percentage in taxes that is supposedly used for programs to help these people. If they truly wanted to improve their situation they could easily take advantage of these programs that will pay for everything (and I do mean everything), even reeducation if you want. All they have to do is stay sober and the vast majority don't want anything to do with that. We would be doing them a far greater service by directing them to the nearest social center that is equipped, staffed and funded to help them regain control and no longer be homeless. Even take them if they are really willing to do what it takes to change their situation. If you still feel that you must continue to give money and food to these folks then do yourself a favor and stick around for a few minutes to see what happens to your donation. More often than not your food donation is placed to the side while more panhandling is done and when they get what they really want (cash money) they forget about your food and run to the nearest liquor store and/or drug dealer. Though I have many stories myself I prefer the one my wife tells. She was traveling on the interstate and needed fuel. Her oldest daughter, who was about 13 or 14 at the time, was with her. They exited the interstate and while waiting at the light off of the interstate ramp her daughter saw a "homeless" man with a sign stating he was hungry and to please help. Her daughter asked if she could give the "homeless" man some of her hard earned allowance. My wife protested but not wanting to appear heartless to a "homeless" person in front of her daughter and, of course, you want to teach your children to be caring (I think teaching them to be wise is more important but that's just my opinion). Anyway, she allowed her to give this man money and she did so. They went on to the gas station with her daughter feeling really good about the good deed she had done. While at the gas station they went inside (because it was also a convenient store) and low and behold there stood the "homeless" man in the checkout line with a twelve pack in hand. She had given him all of her money. She thought he might get some food or a room but no, what he really wanted with her allowance, that she so freely gave him, was more beer. Food would lessen the effect of the alcohol so he bought none of that. The look on her face when she discovered what the world is really like was saddening. Enabling is not helping. The money that we freely give via paycheck deduction is more than adequate to deal with the problem. The thing that cannot be accomplished by throwing money at it is getting those that need those programs to actually use those programs.

I use to work at Circle K in Hattiesburg, Mississippi between 2003 to 2007. After Hurricane Katrina, we had a lot of problems with homelessness around the store. Sometimes on my shift, I would allow some of the homeless to take some food, such as hotdogs, that I was about to throw away before cleaning the equipment, and if they had their own cup, I would allow the to get some coffee or soda from the fast bar.
One homeless man was trying to make enough money by panhandling in order to get back to his home state of Oregon. I told him that he could be arrested if he continues to panhandle, and that there was another legal way to make money.
I knew of the law that was being used to penalize anyone panhandling. It is located, in all places, in the federal laws for the US postal service. The law basically states that if person A gives person B say $1, then person B should return the favor by giving something of equal or greater value to person A. If not, then it is a crime. This law is the basis for anti - panhandling crimes.
After I told the homeless man this, he wondered what he could do in order to stay on the right side of the law. I told him to go to a nearby Walmart's, and purchase some cheap pencils and pens. Afterwards, he should sell the pencils for $0.50, and the pens for $1. I also told him not to sell the pencils or pens anywhere near any retail store which actually sells pencils or pens because they just might call the police on him just to get him driven away.
About a month later, he came back to my store saying that he had made more than enough money to purchase his bus ticket as well as buy himself enough food and drink for the journey to Oregon. He told me that if he was ever in any further need of money after he gets home, he will know how to go about doing it legally.

I was going to a Tim Hortons when a guy standing outside said in a soft and quiet tone “can you help me get a coffee and a donut?” I asked him which kind as i would go in and buy it for him. He just stood there and stared at me for a couple seconds before telling me he actually wants money cause he trying to save up for a meal at a nearby KFC. I said how much is that? He said its over $10. I told him i can buy him a meal from here and still get him the coffee and donut. He patted my shoulder and said “thats ok bro but thanks anyway” i went in and got my coffee and when i went out he started asking others the same thing “can you help me get a coffee and a donut?”...

I normally give homeless people food and no money, but sadly some are really not happy with it :(
Once, there was a homeless lady, she asked me for money, because she was hungry. I didn't have any money, but I told her I would get her some food. She started screaming that she wanted money, because she needed a place to stay for the night and food. She didn't stop screaming and yelling at me, police had to take her away. Half year ago there was a homeless man, he said he was hungry, I told him I was going to buy him an apple, his response was ''I don't want an apple, I prefer some energy drinks or beer'. So, I just walked off, without buying him anything. A few months ago when it was very cold and raining, a homeless man came up to me and told me he needed money for some food. I felt bad for him, so I told him I would buy him food, when I came back with some bread, milk and fruit he was calling someone with his brand new Iphone......
I am not rich, because I am a just student and if I can help people I would always try, but 6/10 homeless people don't appreciate it when I try to help them. I understand that most of them have some kind of (mental or drugs) problem, but it's not motivating at al.

I have to take umbrage with #1. At 3:30AM at a motel in Arizona, I bumped into a woman who stated she was homeless. I was departing the motel early to continue a long road trip. The gal asked if she could occupy my room to take a shower and get a couple hours sleep. I said, "No." If she took the keys to my room, I would have been responsible for any theft or damage to the room. Instead, I offered to pay for a room for her. She quickly declined! As soon as some good hearted passenger gave him the money, he exited the train before it left the station. I'd see the same guy almost every night with the same story. I'd call him out on it and tell people not to give him anything and they'd look at me like I was the bad guy. The last time I saw him I blurted out his story before he had a chance to, "NO nobody has $6 so you can make it home to Middletown" the guy just left the train.

I felt sorry for him.I had recently received money and decided to pay it forward. I gave the old man $20.00 and he seemed surprised. A few days later I saw him, walking with his artificial leg on and dressed nice. I could of been upset but I just remembered how good I felt giving to what I thought was doing good. I will not be giving any homeless person money again. I read or heard by giving money to the homeless it just prolongs them being homeless. I don't know why, but I want to tell this little story. In 1994, I was 19 and my then-boyfriend was 24. We were approaching the gate to our apartment one evening when I saw a cat next to the small trash receptacle just outside.
As I was crouched down, petting the cat, a car pulled up, stopped abruptly, and this fellow got out and handed me a ten-dollar bill. I looked up at him in surprise and said, "WHAT???", and then looked at my boyfriend. The fellow said, "Take care of yourselves", rushed back to his car, got in and drove away. I noticed a lady with the fellow, all smiles at the good deed.
I stood up and asked the boyfriend, "Why did they do that"? They were still at the stop sign in clear sight when we entered the gate to our apartment.
I can only imagine that they were just as confused as we were at that same moment, when they realised that I wasn't homeless and going through trash - just, petting a cat.

Number (9) I remember when it happened. I live there and always seen her out on the street harassing ppl for money. Eventually she was exposed for not actually being homeless. She was locked up over it and eventually was back out on streets begging again shortly after her release! Only difference is she was begging at different locations
