for pencils that keep breaking on you, throw them into a microwave for about 10 to 12 seconds. It melts the inner core some what so they don't break so much. It does work so give it a try!!!

@@candyncakes7893 I tried it, but only for about 5 seconds or so, not any longer (I am still afraid of it catching on fire) and it does get nice and soft, it doesn't break at much and it was a lot more pleasant to color with! But if you have extra time you can also leave them out for a while in the sun (if you are like me and afraid of burning something)

@@gianpinheirodepaula9253 I have never tried this on water color pencils but maybe it will work. I have only tried this on my prisma pencils, Marco Raffine' and Faber Castel's. 10-12 seconds is enough to melt the cores so that it mends a crack. And yes, it really works!!

Here is a tip for sharpening watercolor (and regular colored pencils): rotate the SHARPENER AROUND the pencil-holding the pencil in one position, NOT rotating the pencil inside the sharpener. This helps keep the soft "leads" from breaking inside the wooden outer pencil.

I've moved away from sharpeners for watercolour pencils, I find them too wasteful. The core is valuable colour but each time we put it in a sharpener, more than %50 of the cone we create goes in the bin. Unlike working with normal colour pencils, we don't always need a sharp point and in fact I prefer to side shade as it produces less retained pencil marks. We don't need to fill the divots and get rid of the white bits as we do in colour pencil. We get rid of them when we apply water. I sharpen watercolour pencils with a sharp knife (Scalpel with a standard 10A blade) and only par back the wood to expose core. Rotating the pencil as I side shade, retains a point naturally without any waste and gives me more exposed core for picking up colour with a wet brush when needed. This more bullet shaped tip I find more versatile, giving me smoother laydown, less frequent need to sharpen and sufficient point when I need it. Since I stopped using a sharpener about 5 years ago, I have found my watercolour pencils last way longer and I get virtually no breakage.

OMG, i am facepalming myself so hard right now. I always loved the idea of watercolorpencils and i own more than i could justify (especially 'cause i didn't use them), but i could never make them work and did not understand why I would use a watercolor pencil when i could use pans or tubes - all it did was smudging, looking muddy or pale/cheapish. I just never archieved a smooth transition from one color to the next. To be fair to myself - i looked up some tutorials but none of them said to work from light to dark (or i just didn't catch it?!). I just colored it in very rough, did not care to work in circles or from light to dark. Well - i tried it your way a few minutes ago and this tip is as much a life saver as it is a reason to gringe at myself. THANK YOU ALICE! Now i get it and maybe I could enjoy my wc pencils more once inktober is over. :D

Thank you! Regarding Derwent, the pencils i have, are not really water color but a dye. It is set once dry. Very specialized...at least the ones i have. They are very intense, which i love in some of my work, but it is not for everyone or every picture. There are watercolor paints like that, too. We find over time what our own style is and which media assists us in our expression. I have fun mixing them, as you did here. For me, i love the explosions of colors that watercolor offers. I think it is so exciting to just see them bloom. When dry, they look different ant then I decide how to use them for a picture. It is like reading clouds, i guess. I use larger pieces and if i do not like the picture, i cut the large piece into 4x5s and look again! It can be very interesting what happens, so never throw a painting away. Use the cards asbackgfounds for greeting cards.

I don't know if you mentioned the paper weight - I buy the 140 lb. no matter what the brand. And I will use washi tape to tape down the paper to lessen warping.
