Lol am i the only one that was using them all wrong (i dipped the pencils in water and started coloring, no brushes whatsoever) 😂😂😂
No lol
Literally the reason I searched for this video 💀💀💀
sorry but I just couldn't help but laugh lol.....nothing personal!!! 😁
No, you are not the only one who doesn't know how to use watercolor pencils. I've been using them all wrong for years. I'm so glad I found this video.
Lol, same here,I looked up this video, because I knew something was wrong 🤔
Love it. I'm new to watercolor painting and this video thought me a lot. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for doing this. I learned a lot
Thank you! very helpful.
I agree, a very helpful video. At 68 I am an old new art student. I am slowly understanding layering and your video was another "A ha" moment. Understanding the whole process helps me be patient and to take my time. Thank you.

Wow, something new 2me😮
Bravo🎉❤this!
Perfectly timed for me to see a year later, when I'm ready and eager to get started with my new full set of Faber Castel Albrecht Durer Watercolor pencils 120 that will arrive on this coming Monday. I also want to try the techniques shown using my original Derwent Inktense 72 pencils. A dream of mine is to be able to get the new 28 Inktense colors introduced in by Derwent in 2023!
Finally, feel like I have a better idea of how to use them properly
You and me both
Great video, thank you so much for making it. I just want to add one thing for anyone who is new to watercolor pencils. You can blend dark to light, but it has to be done in a different way than going light to dark (which is what's shown in the video). It works well if you use small strokes side to side and wash off the brush frequently. While this method does make it easier to accidentally bring pigment too far down into the light area, I've found that it also gives you more control over not letting darker pigment bleed into already-wet light areas (which is a common issue that is even present in the video example).
Wonderful video. This is my first time using water colour pencils and the technique you have is just amazing and very skilful. Hopefully I am
able to get the most of my new Fabriano water colours. Love your video!

I still have my Bryunzeel watercolor pencils I got from my uncle at my hospital bed when I was 12. Never took to the watercoloring side of it, I simply hadn’t thought about them being watercolor pencils and their benefits. Recently I’ve rediscovered them and your video has given me some enthusiasm to use them like this. I am a very light colorist due to my muscle illness and don’t find them very pigmented but maybe I need to layer more so I’ll try that. If I still don’t like them at least I now know which pencils are worth buying. Your succulent is gorgeous btw
What a clever uncle giving you a wonderful present to keep your mind off hospital but you won't make a mess. ❤
Loved this! so many helpful tips for a beginner! I too am an elder (73) just beginning to explore art. I have tried many mediums but keep coming back to the colored water pencils. Thank you so much.
77 here, still learning.
Haven’t used watercolor pencils in a while, might play around with them today with these techniques
F funny, I was playing with my arteza woodless w/colour pencils last night!
Helpful, but would be good to see the brushes you talk about during the discussion of materials….
Gosh, I lift the color off the pencil with a wet brush. I can even create a wash and I can hold 3 or 4 colors in my left hand lifting/mixing different colors. Totally different I guess. The great big advantage is no pencil strokes on the paper. Oh, this is using Derwent AQUAtone woodless pencil that are solid pigment. Love them! Forgot to mention, I can also create a little travel pallet by marking the pencil pigment heavily onto thick paper. Then lift color off of that for quick little sketches. I feel like this tutorial totally skips this other method of using pencils. (which I find best.
I have some of the pencils. I put off doing any painting since surgeries. I just tried wetting the watercolor pencil and can get darker colors that way. I think they are pretty and create a smooth look and softer.
I guess I need to learn how to draw first. Thank you for showing all the techniques!
Clear and concise tutorial for beginners and for refreshing basic skills! 🎨
I remember the original How-to video from 2018! 💐I was still in high school at that time and I appreciate your updated take on the tutorial. I'm also fond of an older tutorial on how to make textures with watercolors, including the plastic wrap and sponge method. Have you discovered new ways to make watercolor texture over the last few years? It would be great to see how you use other materials to make textures now.
CHEESE!
I like your simple way of explaining please don’t change your style it’s easy to follow and clear instructions from one Tutor to another. Thank you
I have used the Koh-I-Noor brand of watercolor pencils. I thought when I was younger that they were the only brand that made them! I still have a very good collection of them. I have since invested in the Albrecht Durer pencils when doing more fine art that was intended for sale! Wonderful examples Alice you created a new wonderful video!
CHEESE!
I absolutely love that video you made at that time. Definitely helped me understand the basics of how to layer and paint with watercolors (well w/pencils anyway 😊). And I did praise you for it when my work wasn’t coming out the way I want to and was watching it while I was painting. Now this video is in my playlists. So glad you decided to give a more in-depth tutorial to your steps this time around. ❤🤟🏾😎🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰❤
CHEESE!
Excellent tutorial.....thank you ! I bought these pencils for my grand daughter and wanted to know how to use them to show her.......crafty grandma !!
I've seen people suggesting the wet on dry method of dipping your pencils. When I tried it, I was like "Oh this is so pretty.... for a few strokes, and then it goes back to being a pencil." I came to this video hoping to find out what I was doing wrong, and it apparently was that whole method!
My first how to video on watercolor pencils and it was very helpful! I learned a great deal.
Up to this point I've only been using watercolor pencils for super fine details in my watercolor pieces (such as small twigs on trees, individual hairs or eyelashes, etc.) but after watching this I think I'm going to try a whole WC pencil piece. Thank you!! 🙏☺️
I never thought to combine the two. Now I feel foolish lol. But this was worth watching just for your comment….thx
CHEESE!
Such a well produced and very educational video. Thank you for sharing your creative process and providing a valuable learning opportunity for many artists. Wishing you a truly wonderful day ahead.
Thanks for just getting to it without wasting too much time on self promotional chat at the start like some folks do.
Just beginning with watercolour pencils and found this video very helpful. Thank you. xo
CHEESE!
Go from lightest to darkest for the gradient... talk about a light bulb moment. Thank you!
Great video, talks way too fast for me to easily concentrate
thank you so much the blending from light to dark really works wonders!!
Very helpful tips. Clear instructions. Thank youuuu so much.
It seems like water color pencils are somewhat pointless, or maybe I'm not understanding. Instead of being a tool (like a brush) it is more like a material (like paint or ink). I appreciate your video, but I am still not sold on the pencils. Why not just use water color paints?
It's great for quick sketching, and they're easy to carry around (just need the pencils and A water brush for plein air). You also have the option of using them for mixed media, by using pencil on top of the watercolour if you want. You can also use them to sketch out a watercolour painting instead of graphite, as graphite can muddy your picture.
This video was very helpful. I few years ago, I went to a watercolor pencil workshop, but it didn't cover as much as you did in your video. It left me feeling unsure of myself so I didn't pursue it any further. Your video, though, has inspired me to continue on.
I bought the pencils but have been afraid to use them. Thank You!
Thank you for making this easy to understand video. I have watercolor pencils but didn’t really know how to use them.
Such a helpful but simply put tutorial…..this is absolutely the most helpful video that I’ve watched and I have searched and searched for this very thing, for the longest!!! Thank you so, so much!!!!
Especially the part about the hard edges!! Geez….why has everyone not shared these details? You are such a wonderful help, and I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate this!!
OMG. I'm a Newbie to watercolor pencils and I just swatched out 72 new watercolor pencils and I was doing the exact opposite of what your video suggested. From wrong paper, wrong technique, everything was wrong...I wish I had found your video first before struggling for almost 6 freaking hours 🥴🙄 THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this! This was so very helpful and gave thorough instructions on what & what NOT to do for us Newbies 🙏😊❤
Very helpful! I am ordering my first set of watercolor pencils so your tips will come in handy :) Thanks so much!
CHEESE!
❤❤❤THANK YOU FOR THIS TUTORIAL!!
So happy to find this. I’m bedbound so wanted to try to pencils. Less fuss and muss on bedtray.
The succulent was 🤩 but enjoyed the entire video. I’ll be watching a few times 😊. Thank you. 🙏
So cool thank you. Is there anyway to be closer up to the paper so we can see up close what it’s doing?
Thank you for sharing this how-to video. I want to try water coloring on my embroidery projects.
Im not new to water color pencils, but i learned new things about them with this. Thanks!!
Big like for this video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Interesting and helpful techniques, but oh, do I have trouble listening to her voice. So grating and if I hear "watercolourpencil" said again, I will go mad! Please use pronouns! Thanks.
People actually thought to dip the pencil in the water?? I have never even thought of that route.
If nobody tells them, how should they know? How good you are so smart. Your comment is a bit discriminating
i am today years old when i found out why it is called (water)color pencils
Like it! Question: if blending is the most challenging part, would using a stiffer brush help with that? Thank you!
I have learnt more in this video than I have learnt in over a year of trying to use water coloured pencils. Thank you! I am now subscribed to your channel. ❤🇨🇦
CHEESE!
Thank you so much! Very educational. Clear and easy to follow. Alice is quite engaging. 😊
CHEESE!
Obvious this is not for me as it seems pointless. Happy psinting to others.😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤
It sounds good but really hard to see on ur paper. Might not want yo use light colored pencils for the demo on this. Sorry but i really cant follow as i cant really see what u r talking about.
Hullo Alice!! I am 46 and just starting to get into different types of Drawing Techniques. Your videos are so simple to understand and follow. Thank you so much for the time you take to reach out to all artists and share your talents!
CHEESE!
Thank you so much for this video I wasn’t aware that we can do layer on layer with water color art and the tip about hard line and not working on a leaf that’s right next the other was beautiful
Great video, loved it!
Hi i want to ask you 2 things are those woodless watercolour pencils you are using and how is the strathmore watercolour paper like to use
Thank you! This was super helpful and I'm now excited about trying out the watercolor pencils I recently bought.
Question: I am noticing that your Arteza pencils leads do not seem to be in wood like my Faber-Castell. Is that because the whole pencil is pigment? (I hope I explained my question to be understandable ) :)
Same question. Please answer when you can. 🙂
Yes, this is a woodless pencil. She mentions it at the beginning. I have the Arteza watercolour pencils with wood, and I'm really enjoying them. They're not crazy expensive either. I have a huge set!
This is an excellent, easy to understand presentation. Thank you very much for simplifying the challenge of a new medium.
PLEASE speak in a normal pace- not racing.
Very helpful video!!!
Can you use mind media paper?
You can take of the brush and it's better
Where to buy supp;ies - can you place limks?
very helpful. Thank you!
are they really water colour pencils ?
Question when you layer does the under layer lift up and reactivate. Ex when you put the light green then added water and let it dry but then you add a dark green on top and use water does that light green reactivate
Yes so be careful!
Im making my coyote mask rn!!
I put my watercolor pencils back into my drawer. I will now take my pencils out and start to create. Not knowing, I did wet my pencils. Thank You......
Oh y goodness!!!!! This video is amazing! Thank you, so much, for sharing. Subscribing!!!
Thank you! This is a super helpful tutorial on watercolor pencils. I have the Artesia set and wasn't really inspired by it... I just picked up a 72 set from ARTISTO after watching a review from Lindsay The Frugal Crafter. I find the range of colors really inspiring, and it has renewed my enthusiasm for trying these out. LOL, if I watched your video first, I probably could have saved $20! Still, not sorry. ❤ 😂
Yes, the only one! LOL😂
While I found this video informative I don't care to learn how to paint. I will be purchasing the artiza watercolors for scrapbooking. I will just enjoy doodling colors. I appreciated all your techniques but was way to above my head. I can't even draw a stick figure. Basically you answered my question about how they are used. Like others I thought you dip them in water. Wishing you well on your channel.❤
Yayyy!!!
That was very helpful, thank you!
Bought a set of 120 watercolour pencils without knowing that this is how they are supposed to be used. So i was just colouring in the normal way like any pencils! Though i did wonder why they weren't blending very well! 😂

You have a new subscriber Alice. Thanks for sharing and demonstrating so clearly and concisely all the highlights of your message and presentation. Exceptionally well done with just the right emphasis on each aspect of the subject to get started. I'm excited and looking forward to getting really comfortable with all of my water friendly pencils. Namely Albrecht Durer and Inktense. Thanks again!
Excellent work, and I’m buying watercolor pencils, now! So fun to learn something new!
Thank you!!!!❤
Is Faber Castle a fine brand for water colour pencils?
yes very good
Very nice tutorial
Oh my goodness. I am so doing this. All these years fussing with coptic pens trying to blend my colored pencils. Thank you!
Don’t want to sound ignorant, but what do you mean by gradient? I only know that’s a math term. Does it mean something different in art?
it's a fade, from dark to light or one color to the other!
@@HulloAlice
Thanks, Alice!
Cheers, I could have wasted so much time if I hadn't of watched this video, very helpful.
Ok. Wow. Although I currently have a migraine, I dragged my butt to my table with the watercolor pencils. I did your technique blending from the light to dark instead of the opposite. You are so right and it looks so good!! I’ve been tempted to pitch the darn things with frustration and disappointment because I wanted to love them. Now I do. Thank you.
Man, after watching this I realize that simply using watercolor is by far easier than using watercolor pencils.
Very Helpful…….Thank You. Gayle in New Jersey. 🙅♂️
Thank you very much for these extremely helpful tips 🙏
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thanks your video was simple and to the point, excellent use of my time!
This is a gem of a video, I too started by dipping lol ❤your explanations are so good, I enjoyed watching you sketch and create. Thank you for sharing.😊
Thank you. I enjoyed your informative video on how to use watercolor pencils. I am looking forward to trying it out soon.
Thanks 🙏🏻 I have a box of watercolour pencils but haven’t had much success so far. Will be trying the technique you have shown! 😊
Thanks for teaching techniques and then using them . Appreciate your wisdom 😊
Watercolour is the bane of my existence but I need to learn it for my art class so this was really helpful for me ! ! !
New to watercolor pencils. This was very helpful. I just ordered some WC pencils and am excited, and a little more prepared to use them. Grateful, from Oregon!
I used to use mine like a travel pallet. Tap the end with a water brush, and you've got an easy, no mess travel set that fits in a pencil case.
This is a great tutorial 🫒🐦🫒🍇 Thank you. 😊 I have a much better idea now how to work with them.
Great video. It was super helpful. Thank you.
Oh no your not the only one doing it wrong ! Lol. Im so happy i came across this video!!!❤
Very helpful and enlightening tips! Thank you!!
Yeah i'm a beginner with water colors so this is very helpful. Also yesterday I try'd doing it with no tutorial or information on it at all so I used my regular sketching paper and didn't know how to blend and it ended up ruin like 6 papers underneath it so if you don't want that to happen I make sure to listen to the part where she says to use watercolor paper trust me it was a disaster.
Explained very simply. Thank you so much. 😊x
