Best Watercolor Pencils - 26 Brands Tested! Who Do You Think Won?

  • What are the best watercolor pencils? And what are the worst? Watch as Steve and I run the "Battle of the Watercolor Pencils" where we test 26 different brands to see who comes out on top!
Our goal in doing this watercolor pencil testing was to find the best watercolor pencils for Colorists (NOT necessarily for Watercolorists.) This is an important distinction because what is important to a Watercolorist may not be important to a Colorist and visa-versa.
For example, we not only wanted to know how each of these watercolor products performed when wet, but also how they performed dry-similar to how one might use them in a coloring book.
    HOW IT WORKS
    • First, we purchased several popular brands of watercolor pencils including Faber-Castell, Caran d'Ache, Arteza, Prismacolor and more!
    • Then we swatched all of the pencils in one of our watercolor swatch books (over 800 swatches total!)
    www.coloringbliss.com/product...
    • Next we created a watercolor pencil testing worksheet upon which we tested and scored all 26 brands.
    www.coloringbliss.com/waterco...
    • Finally, we tallied all of the scores to come up with the best and worst watercolor pencils.

I came here to look for a new brand of watercolor pencils I had Staedtler Karat Aquarell for many years I did not use them to color but in watercolor painting when needed a fine line or fine details. Lately I wanted to use them in coloring books or printed paper ( I bought the cardstock you recommended a long time ago ) I can use the w/c pencils on inkjet as long as it is not freshly printed. I found the pencils a bit scratchy and thought that Arteza would be better.
After all your work and thanks for it, I decided that I will stick to the Karat because I can not afford the Albrecht Durer, and, if I want to w/c I will use my w/c in tube or tub, Than you, you saved me some money. These days money is a rare fantasy.

I'm here for the second time.
The first time was when the video came out just of curiosity and now because I have seen some videos more to how to use watercolor pencil. Watercolor pencils have always been a little bit of mystery and confusing to me but after I have see some videos of "In the studio with Michele Webber" I think I ready to go for it. Maybe.
Just have to decide witch brand I should buy.
I have some watercolor pencils from "of brand", some old Faber-Castell studio grade and what Scrawlr Box have send to me that last year.
I don't remember with brand came i first place I this video so I will watch again. And I think must see what the difference are among all Faber-Castell's brand. (Magnus I know.)

I have 36 Albretcht Dürer and yeah, they really worth it. And they are usually twice, three times cheaper than Caran D’ache ones. Really love them and absolutely recommend, even if you don’t know how to use water techniques on coloring properly, because they color perfectly without it too. Just way too stunning.

Thanks for the comprehensive comparison! I have a tip to get some mojo back out of those Derwent Watercolour pencils. If you gesso your page first, the gesso tooth takes more pigment from the pencil tip and allows for CONSIDERABLY more vibrancy and the blending is much better also. Even when I sand down the tooth, it's still way better than on the paper directly. I was about to bin these pencils in frustration but may even keep them now as the colour range is not bad. I've been using Liquitex transparent gesso.

Thank you so much for this amazing swatch-off! I was so excited to see such a thorough comparison of the "top" watercolor pencils as I have a couple of different brands in my Jacksons's shopping cart (who else always has an art cart (or several) at a store online filled with goodies!?) and was hoping to click the buy button once I found out which was the winner! Thank you again for all your efforts, I really appreciate all the testing, research, and info :)

This makes me SO happy. I'm only upset that it took me so long to find your channel. I am so grateful for how thorough this video, research and testing is. It also confirmed that my Albrecht Durer and Inktense are absolutely worth it. Hopefully I can use your research to prove to my husband that I am not getting swindled and that I'm getting top quality for my top dollar. While I LOVE Luminance and Prismacolor for my regular pencil work, I am a watercolor painter at the end of the day, line work being a close second. And I have never regretted buying Inktense or Albrecht Durer. Along with my watercolor paints and inks (that have taken me like 17 years to collect) I finally have my ideal collection. Hearing you say these 2 are the best just confirms my own use and makes me feel so much better.

  • @lisathaviu1154

I normally use Inktense as my drawing layer of my watercolor paintings. I use Sepia Ink but I find that if I fully activate the drawing part and let it dry, it’s permanent and don’t lift. Based on your preference for the Magnus, you might want to check out the Inktense blocks, which come in small and large. The white Inktense block is way more opaque than the pencil version. It’s worth having for corrections and highlights. If it’s properly activated, you can paint right over the top. One thing notable about the Caran D’Ache is that all of the pigment dissolves when properly activated. The other notable thing is that you will need a second mortgage on your house to buy them.

Same. I have the Suprasoft and the Monduelez and the Supracolors are way better. It is like painting with really saturated paint. I have to agree. As a professional artist I swear by Caran d'Ache and use them more than any other brand by miles. it's Nov 2022 at the time of writing this, so some time after your post, and just bought a 76 box of Museum Aquarelle after testing a few single colours and I rate them very very high. I also use Supracolor II, Pablo and Prismalo Aquarelle - they are all premium pencils for good reason.

Wow what a thorough testing process you did! This was very helpful. I'm wondering why you chose to use the soft Mimik brush. When I use my watercolor pencils, I use a firmer synthetic brush or a Pentel Aquash waterbrush and find that color dissolves more easily with that type of brush. I'm going to look for those Albrecht Durer Magnus pencils. Thanks for sharing!

My 72 set of Inktense pencils have been worth every single cent I paid for them. Michael's will have decent deals. If someone is looking into these, I do understand that it is an investment as far as pencils. But also, they're like luxury pencils and they do every single thing you want them to and more. They have a ton of uses and a lot of qualities that make them different from other watercolor pencils. If and when you have the extra money to invest.... then these are the ones.

My favorite water soluble products: Derwent - Inktense, Caran D’ache - Supracolors Soft, Caran D’ache - Neocolors 2 Derwent- Graphitint. (I use these the most, they are all different products, not necessarily pencils but I use them together)
    My favorites watercolor pencils are:
    1.Caran D’ache - Supracolors Soft
2.Caran D’ache - Museum Aquaralle (A little better than the supracolors, but way too expensive, so I don’t use them often)
    3.Faber Castell - Albrecht Durer

I am SO tickled to find out that the two brands in which I invested in detail (and which I use ALL of the time), ended up ranking #1 and #2 in your extremely thorough and accurate testing/ranking of the Battle of the Watercolor Pencils! I started in watercolor as my medium back in 2011, when I took up art as a hobby, and after I was introduced to watercolor pencils, I spent most of my time with them instead of my little watercolor tubes. Thank you so much for taking the time to complete this valuable and insightful ranking!

Loved your detailed review and especially how you and Steve share the same passion and work together so wonderfully. It’s very beautiful to see you guys finish each other’s sentences or how he knows the exact word you’re looking for. I think I enjoy the interaction between you two as much as the reviews. Okay, as a watercolor artist primarily I mostly agreed with you about the pencils. I have the full set of Albrecht durer and yes amazing. I also have generals, inktense and inktense blocks, (omgosh are they amazing). I also use the caran d’ache water soluble crayons and the suprasoft are an incredible component to use with those, but I’d have to say the museum aquarelle are a tie for 1st for me. I use them alongside the luminescence pencils and again are just that extra key component. As I’m sure you can already tell, lightfast is extremely important to me for the work that I do. I’m drawing my own pieces here, and it’s so incredibly important that they don’t fade. I got into art after my only child, my beautiful son, passed away at 11yrs old. At first I was on gobs of medication, I just couldn’t cope, but I only grew more despondent. Art changed my life and now I pour all my passion into it. I was an artist prior, but nothing like what I am now. Because now it’s really all that I have that keep me sane and gives me hope. I can’t imagine all the hours you guys put into this, but maybe in the future you can add lightfast to your star rating and see if that might change the top contenders? I pretty much only use my general’s when I’m making cards for family, but the others are for my art. I know you put many hours into your coloring and I think it’s possible that other artists might care that all the hours they spend on a piece isn’t going to fade out after a few years and that’s why caran d’ache and derwent are always going to be on the top of the list. Some of those just aren’t meant for dry work and even though the color payoff seems lackluster in regular derwent watercolor pencils, it’s going to remain while the others will fade. It’s just a suggestion and maybe a future project you and Steve can add to your list of reviews. Thank you again. I enjoy watching you guys.

I use Caran D’ache - Supracolor Soft on rare occasion.. I love my Graphitint. Yes, Steve Michel from Mind of watercolor uses these for portraits! He also uses Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencils: They are quite lightfast. The only one on your list that's not actually a true watercolor paint pencil is Inktense because its made with ink and sets up unmovable once totally activated and dry. No different than other mediums not watercolor but are activated by water, and dries solid, like Acrylic or water soluble oils. The important issue for me for watercolor of any kind is lightfastness. If its not rated high lightfastness, its the bottom of the barrel. if its not lightfast its not number 1. Thanks for sharing!

I appreciate your thorough testing! I would like to add that with Inktense pencils one thing that isn't mentioned is that they are fantastic for layering. Activate with water and let dry. Once dry add more color and activate with water for deeper color or shading. The layers don't blend into one another as the first layer is permanent. I know you don't think they are but in the case of bible journaling, it works great that way. It isn't watercolor paper so that may be the difference. Just a thought. Again, thanks for your incredible video!!! It helped me!

Man. I have to say I have a large set of both Albert Durer and Luminance, and I feel the Luminance is WAY better. I think of inktense as in their own space, and never use them solo, as they really are too intense by themselves for most things. Luminance is just melted butter. Durer is good and I like them, but don’t love them. They are my number 3 or 4. Luminance is my #1 and Inktense is my #2
Your tests are wonderful. They are a great place to start. BUT I would still recommend people try small purchases of 3-6 individual pencils of top rated brands to play with them: a red, blue, yellow and then maybe get another 1 to 3 pencils that just look joyful.

I wanted to thank you so much for your incredibly methodical review. I started out with cheaper brand pencils and soon discovered their limitations along with the enjoyment of watercolour pencils. I was really reluctant to pay the money for the big name brand untested. You helped me decide and so I got a set (36) of your #1 rated pencils today in the mail and quickly tested them out. What a DIFFERENCE! The leads are thicker and have a better feel in the hand. They blend so much better than the cheap ones with no pencil lines left over. It was your thorough testing methods that convinced me. Thanks so much.

Thank you for making this video. It was a great look at each brand of pencil. However, I will say that I personally love Derwent's watercolor pencils. I've really learned how to use them well, and I would even rate them above my Arteza expert watercolor pencil set. I think the DWC pencils flow better once water is added. I do also want to try the AD set. 👍 General's was a nice surprise! 👏

I am so glad Faber Castell Albrecht Durer came up on top it is my favourite of all time. I agree with you on Derwent watercolour pencils they changed a lot over the years I have three different sets 1st set had a gray barrel it was pretty good, 2nd set was with a light blue casting barrel and 3rd with the dark blue barrel I found it was very grainy when applying with water.

perhaps it's almost inevitable that a company making an 'intense' colour range will have their other offering be less 'intense' so there isn't a direct competition but rather a synergy when they're used together. Just a thought :)

First, I want to say that I found this video to be very informative and I enjoyed it very much.
After having done a ton of reading and research I recently decided to pull the trigger on the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencil Set, 120 Assorted Colors. I found the best price I could online, braced myself and hit the "pay now" button.
    $$-Ouch!-$$
Well... then I found your video. It was kind of like reading a mystery, wondering who done it and if I'd guessed right.
I haven't received my pencils yet, but after watching your review I am SUPER excited and feel much more confident in my decision and the buyers doubt/remorse is gone.
    Many Thanks!

Wonderful comprehensive review! Please do a Lyra/Rembrandt Aquarell Water Soluble Pencil sheet and compare it to the ones you've already rated. I would love to see how they compare before I decide to purchase. I am not a colorist in the sense that you are rating these, but a watercolorist that still sees the value of your review for how I use them with tube watercolors . The Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer and the Arteza Expert are the ones I own, so the very top rated and close to the bottom rated pencils. I also own the Derwent Inktense pans. Thanks for all your and Steve's hard work.

What a wonderful Job! Amazing! And helpful :-) I went to dig out my 'mix'n match' water-soluable colored pencils and found out that Caran d'Ache has two qualities. They are not equally soluable.
The 'regular' one is called 'Prismalo': after watering it, it still shows the marks on the paper where the pigment was laid down. The 'better' one though is whole different game. They call that line 'Supracolor soft'. The core has a buttery feel to it, it is highly pigmented, seems to me even a little more vibrant than the Prismacolor, it goes on paper very easily and the water does not have to do a lot of convincing... just one brushstroke allows the rich pigments to be released. Just wonderful! Unfortunately I have only a few strays of the Supracolor that made it into my random collection...
I felt bad for the Crayola :'/ But they also seem to have a line for adult artists that can hold its own. Thanks again for this epic undertaking! Greetings from Switzerland ;-)

I’m just getting interested in watercolours, so this info will come in real handy, if and when I want a better set. Right now, I’m using Crayola and like them, just wish there were more colours than the 36 count due to the brights and metallics in the pack are not watercolours, so you end up with just 20 decent colours. Thank you for all the time and effort you and your hubby put into testing all these. xo

An amazing job and great presentation! This kind of objective comparison is super helpful for anyone finding herself in the art supply store color pencil aisle staring at all of those brands. I was hoping that you would include the Caran d' Ache Neocolor II line in your comparison. I assume that for you, they don't qualify as "pencils". Their dimensions are those of crayons, but hey, the F-C Magnum line that you so love is thick as well.

The Koh-i-noor Mondeluz are fantastic pencils at a really affordable price. They are great whether you use them with wet media or not. I'd love some of those chunky Albrecht Durer Magnus, but at the moment coloured pencil is not a major part of my art practice and so it will have to wait.

    • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 Год назад

Mondeluz are nice but they fall closer into the kids pencils category. However, they have some colors that other brands don't produce, so I have added those to my Faber Castell sets and they work beautifully together!

    • @bluewren65
      @bluewren65 Год назад

@@greekveteran2715 I disagree that they are kids pencil quality. They are marketed at the serious artist market and I think the quality is there. There are many other artist grade pencils that don't work as well. They may not be up there with Faber Castell, but are perfectly adequate if you are using your pencils as sketching media and can't really justify a very high priced set for only intermittent and exploratory use.

I actually bought the Crayola pencils and some inexpensive watercolor paper to play with, but with more time on my hands now I've been thinking about upgrading my pencil set. Thank you so much for the video! Just watched which color pencils are the most pigmented, now watching this one.
Derwent inktense is like ink because after it's dry, it doesn't "lift" or wash out when rewetted - but honestly, in my case, most watercolor pencils don't do that either :D I love inktense vibrancy, so I got myself inktense blocks. Going to try putting them on a silk scarf.
I absolutely love Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils but don't have many, because bought regular Derwent watercolor pencils first, and oh well... Faber Castell's Albrecht Durer are much better and gradually i'll switch to them.

Hello, this video was very informative and it's hard to believe, but in my opinion, there is still missing a very important factor - LIGHTFASTNESS. If the pencils are great to work with and have strong pigmentation, that's fine, but this becomes irrelevant if colors (or some of them) will fade within weeks/months/years :). I appreciate all hard work you put into making this review! Probably it would last hours if describing exactly everything but I needed to mention it. For artists that sell or display their work it's important for it not to change with time passing. Thank you!

    • @silviateona4388
      @silviateona4388 3 года назад +3

I agree 100%, though, admittedly, if this video was aimed at "colorists", most, if not all of whom would use these pencils as a hobby, lightfastness might not be a priority. Regardless, I imagine it would still disappoint to find a piece you have worked hard on is fading.
If you're selling work, though, yes, lightfastness is everything.
That said, even though I bought an expensive 60 Albrecht Dürer set, relying on their "highest degree of lightfastness" rating, I've had to put 27 of them away (including all the reds, except one flesh tone and sanguine), since they have a lightfastness rating of II, meaning "average", which is not acceptable. Lightfast red pigments are rare even in high end watercolours.
I've bought a few touted as lightfast Museum Aquarelle reds to compensate, but time will tell how accurate that rating is 🤨.
Apparently, even some of the AD rated "I" have been found to fade in independant tests, so how trustworthy these rating actually are, is a whole other can of worms.
Sorry, I felt like venting 😬 Just had to put away two ✌️ expensive red Daniel Smith watercolor tubes rated as "excellent lightfastness" by the brand, yet recently found by independant tests to be as fugitive as the infamous (though gorgeous) Opera Pink 😬😫

@@silviateona4388 Thank you for this answer. Well, that's bad news if we cannot always trust the producer, but I am still hoping in most cases the 'excellent LF' means something! :) And if this subject appears in reviews maybe the companies would also care more.

You always blow my mind qith the incredible details, tips and results. I have a 36 set of FC Albrecht Durer and this year I may piecemeal the rest. Last year was Polychromous and Goldfaber. I love!!! Derwent Inktense pencils, blocks and 'wateecolor'pan sets 1 & 2. I have Derwent Cumberland and Derwent Rexel wc pencils from 1981-ish and the colors are sharp when wet or dry. Love Arteza's, woodless which work way better with odorless mineral spirits and don't lose color as water dilutes and oms just blends what's there. I have a 12-set Caran D'Ache from 1980-ish and only this year realized they are wc...major duh. Kimberly rocks, another 1980's set. The wood on these old sets is dry and I keep shavings (same as Derwent) for washes, mixed with mediums for art journaling and crafting and gel prints. So much to learn... At least in Heaven...
