- Just because I couldn't find this anywhere, here's Paul F. Tompkins' appearance in "There Will be Blood". I must admit that I didn't recognize him at all until I watched it again after knowing he was in the film, and I've got to say he was not funny at all in this role. Although I think he could square off against John C. Reilly in an acting off any day

It's about a guy who's trying to hold together a meeting.
+Sarah Cooper Daniel Day Lewis rounds out the cast.
Sarah Cooper worth a rental
He helped put the fire out
Haha agreed men simple as I say
Hold a meeting together
Paul F. Tompkins was absolutely riveting in this scene Daniel Day Lewis was also pretty good
which one was Paul?
I heard Paul f Tompkins took naps between the takes of this scene. I think underneath a counter on stage somewhere.
“So Daniel, how many smashed Pennie’s have you seen at one time?”
“Sit that woman down!” My fav line in the scene 😂
Back when people had sense
"SIT THAT WOMAN DOWN!"
MrCanuck009 my god that guys on fire 🤣
I saw Paul F Tompkins live recently, and at the opening applause he pointed up to someone in the balcony and yelled, “SIT DOWN, MA’AM!” I laughed so hard
thank you for this! burst out laughing when i heard "WE GAIN NOTHING BY LOSING OUR HEADS!"
Listening to him yelling in the background is amazing
MR PLAINVIEW cakeboss WE NEED YOU WE NEED YOU cakeboss cakeboss THERES NO CONFUSION
Ser Gregor Clegane I love you
There Will Be Blood: The story of one man's attempt to keep a meeting on track
"We gain nothing by losing our heads." I recognize that voice... thanks for isolating this clip
Lol ur mad
@@louisi247 ?
@@louisi247 How could you possibly think that comment was “mad”, out of all possible interpretations 😂
It was literally the most straightforward and neutral comment possible lmao
@@Luschan Yeah I weas retarded 3 years ago apprarently. Don't know what I was saying mad for. My mistake lmao
@@Luschan Yeah you're right. I've no idea what a younger 3 years me was thinking... I was being.... mad.
The scene exemplifies one of the most profound lessons I learned in sales. That, while you want as many deals as you can get, just as much as the prospect is vetting you it is important to also vet the prospect and see if their business is even worth acquiring. In this case, the disorganization of the township makes their oil not worth the headaches that would come with dealing with them. Great movie
That, and Paul F. Tompkins was hilarious on VH1's Best Week Ever.
You sure got all that right Sir.
Dealing with people that are difficult and uncooperative can also cause you to lose money in the deal.
These people will be more difficult to swindle. Theyre rowdy. Plainview doesn't like to be challenged.
Notice when Daniel offers to buy the Sunday ranch, Mr. Sunday is a pushover but Eli is not, and there is instant tension between them when Eli knows he's there for the oil but doesnt want to pay the price you would expect for land full of oil.
@@richhenry7540 These people are a bunch of rubes that simply do not know how to conduct business in a calm rational manner. Daniel stated his deal like any businessman would and the entire room erupted into a shouting match.
Screw that!
The first time I saw this scene I understood exactly what he meant when he said "I wouldn't take the lease now if you gave it to me as a gift."
I do sales too. And if I don't like you I am not selling you anything. People like these rubes are never satisfied no matter what you do for them. The last thing I need is someone like that.
There are too many other people out there that can do business in a civil way.
Lotta people in this comment threat talking like and relating to a guy who murders two people and alienates his adopted child by the end of the movie.
I just started reading "Oil!" By upton Sinclair. This is loosely based on that book but this monologue is almost word for word in the novel. I read it in his voice
In Upton Sinclair's voice?
@@JasonJBrunet US was natural soprano.
The best performance of this century.
Paul did a great job! He should be proud of himself!
YOU HELPED PUT OUT THE FIRE TOO
"We gain nothing by losing our heads!"
GOAT line, should have won the best supporting actor oscar.
“Things go by friendship in a rush like this” 👌
For as much of a bastard as Daniel Plainview is, I empathize with him a fair bit in this scene. I hate commotion more than I hate my kids going deaf.
He. Drinks. Your. MILKSHAKE! (sluuuurp) HE DRINKS IT UP!
It's a crime that there was no Best Supporting Actor nomination
Daniel Day Lewis would have been a shoo-in for it
Brilliant performance! It really is a movie about a guy trying to keep a meeting on track...
When I asked Paul F. Tompkins what he was known for, he referred me to this clip.
We gain nothing by losing our heads
This performance is so strong and magnetic, his voice is so hypnotozing that if I was one of those peasants I would have fallen by his words and give him the lease for a ridoculous price
You're taking about Paul f Tompkins right?
He wouldn't have taken it even if you have it to him as a gift
It's just the little things about this film that makes me think it's one of the best ever made. The shouting when it starts at around 1:08 is the most real I've ever heard in a film. I don't know how they did it.
Yes man so agree
That’s the directors vision
That’s his job. His muse. All of it
Because PTA is a genius
Sound design helps alot but I imagine they worked it out with actually lines and cadences too. Some of the shouting is too quiet to hear but the louder stuff is actually related to the scene.
What are the rules of Daniel day Lewis?
“You gave no business being here-SIT THAT WOMAM DOWN SIR!!!”
He definitely had at least three lines. Indeed he should be proud.
Masterful acting..and a compelling presentation too. I have to watch this movie again.
Paul F. Tompkins in There Will Be Blood is right up there with Todd Barry in The Wrestler in the pantheon of great film performances.
We gain nothing by losing our heads. Good one Paul!
I love that a camera starts focusing on the kid and then suddenly comes back to Daniel
It's a perfectly shot movie. The soundtrack is exceptional also.
The title to this video made me laugh. Love me some Paul F. Tompkins, it's so cool he got to act along side one of the best actors of our generation.
Mr. Peanutbutter
Yes! I am also been searching for this everywhere... Thanks for the clip and the upload!!l
"Erica!! Who let you out of the TB sanitorium!!"
He was outta there like Steve Martin
God, he id amazing here!! But i recognize his voice so well and can here him so much more clearly then everyone else it's surreal!
That was riveting. I think Mr. Tompkins employed the "Rules of Daniel Day Lewis" wonderfully. I was hoping to see the take where DDL yelled in his face. I mean, "is there anything worse?"
Instead they used the take where he *whispered* in his face, but with ferocious intent! That's even worse than getting yelled at!
Paul F Tompkins? What is this, a crossover episode??
I feel like this is an underappreciated comment.
The two people who gave a thumbs down must be pie lovers.
Clearly. Cake vs pie? Pshhh...
Cake will ALWAYS be superior to pie, because FROSTING.
sit that woman down sir!
Technicality no down boo over?!
Trey Marks Technicality no down boo over.
Trey Marks I love you
did daniel day lewis win best supporting actor for this?
GoreF1en4
I don't know if you were being sarcastic but he won Lead actor
DDL was nominated for best supporting, although in a bold and yet-to-be-repeated move, the academy gave it to Paul instead, making it his second win of the night for this very film. His first win of the night, of course, was for best lead in this film.
@@HL-hr4ox hahahah
Non-PFT fans are like wtf
One of the Best Films I have Ever seen.
"Things go by friendship in a rush like this."
I really liked that line ☺
mr. peanutbutter? what is this, a crossover episode?!
All I hear is Mr. Peanut Butter now...
How did I ever miss this? Thanks.
Most of what he's saying: "Let us discuss what the man is... Let's discuss what he has to say! There's lots to understand!" " If we lose... We gain nothing by losing our heads!" (inaudible) "Mr. Plainview! Please, Mr. Plainveiw!" "No, Mr. Plainview! No, where are you going?" "But we need you! We need you to begin-" "No no no! There's no confusion! If you just..."
What dose the guy in the white shirt and black waist coat say?
Basically Twitter back in the day
"I Was There Too" sent me here!
I was sent here too by I was there too
PizzaDinosaur I too was also sent here by I was there too
He really wanted to keep talking to Mr. Plainview, try to convince him to buy the plot, but at that moment he caught sight of his good friend Erica, who was wearing a jacket that could fit all her limbs, so he had to go over and chat.
And then someone saw Fabio and couldn't stop laughing...
"Ah, the taxes....the hand thing means the taxes...."
Paul f thompkins is hilarious
I can't help noticing the actor sitting in the chair in this clip with Paul F. Tomkins. The one with the hat.
One of my top ten movies a work of art
I think his performance in birthday dad is more emotional but this one isn't too bad
um its a joke....paul f Tompkins is a stand up comedian, he has a joke that the movie is about a guy(paul f tompkins) trying to keep a meeting on track. paul f tompkins was making a joke saying as if the movie was all about him even though he only has a 2 second role in the movie..get it?
Oh, it’s a joke. Because the actor is a stand up comedian. He tells jokes so he’d make a joke about the scene. He joked that the scene was about a man trying to keep a meeting on track. But that’s not really the main focus of the scene. And that’s where the joke is. I get it.
I guess this is what made Mr. Peanut Butter want to be an actor
"Just a little movie about a guy trying to hold a meeting together...Daniel Day Lewis rounds out the cast!" 😂
He should be really proud!
It was only much later that the man running that meeting would indeed become a boss himself... A Cake Boss.
DDL won best supporting in Gangs of New York and best actor in there will be blood and other awards so i see why people are confused. Daniel day is the best actor of our time.
You helped put out the fire too!
Why is there already an oil well further up the hill at the end?
Where can I see the full "Don't bully me daniel" scene?
Rich P there is a video around just search the I drink your milkshake scene
Mr Peanutbutter best performance
Daniel build the fire hell all by himself
if the rule you followed brought you this...of what use is the rule?
First dialogue of the film after 18 mins in.
I drink it evverrrryyy dayyy....my favourite line and I go insane laughing with this
Mr oilman didnt take the lease because of the one thing his charector hates more than anything, & that is competition.
His words make it clear later, he wants nobody to win. That plain slick bastard! And we later see him making perfect fools of decent folks in a small town.
What is this, a crossover episode?
This movie is so good that if I saw that in the cinema Id give it a standing ovation. Rarely does a film make me feel that way
I'd clap for this film like I clap after a flight.
HW acting like the real power behind the throne.
Lolll cake boss...
cake boss.
Cake boss!
who’s that dog?
He’s in this scene? His character Bernt mentions this scene in The Neighborhood Listen episode A Fog That Smells Like Chemicals. That’s funny
I go to the store for peanut brittle, and this is what i get??
look at all that black gold on his face....
oh
This is the guy in modern times who lays down the law. If you want to close the sale, be the guy who speaks justice
It's so weird that PFT did the entire scene barefoot.
He said he doesn’t drop tools and spend months fishing for them and in the next scene he does just that 😅
I'm a goo man you see
1:45 did he say "yo mr plainview"
Ayo was probably a word back then too
Do we move around a lot or stay still?! What are the rules of Daniel Day-Lewis?!?!
I like his smokey the bear hat
The really funny part is the out of focus guy constantly shouting and telling the woman to sit down, is the "Want a line of cocaine?!" guy from Superbad.
What's his name?
Tell ‘em about the hurt
Killers of the flower moon looks like it’s gonna be a good piece of cinema! But probably won’t out do there will be blood. But never know
Seen the movie about five times and I'd heard he was in it, but never spotted which one was him before. His face is barely visible.
Yepprd Oh, you're referring to a comment I made in response to somebody who was confused that I said he wasn't funny in this film. Believe me, I never meant to suggest that I thought my dumb comment impacted anybody's opinion of Paul's acting abilities
+John Doe Yeah, well what about that scene where he quotes Bill Hader in that "I drink your milkshake" SNL sketch? Explain that, genius
+John Doe I personally feel that it would be a bit redundant because I think there's a very similar scene already in the film. Plus I don't appear in any other scenes and I'm not an actor so it would probably just confuse the audience
+John Doe We'll just have to agree to disagree. Look, I'll admit that you have some very valid reasons to want to watch a stranger get murdered on screen, but in my opinion the scene you are describing would feel distractingly out of place and irrelevant.
I'm a little late to this comment thread but +Hannibalorjustrex is GOAT
I'm a little late to agree with you, but...
Paul F. Tompkins? Is this a crossover episode?
wow hes a great actor i could have sworn that was daniel day lewis
0:03 he looks like dutch from red dead redemption 2
anybody else feel like he's staring into your soul?
Brilliant scene
Although Thompson's account of his work on TWBB is funny, it also exaggerates the intensity of DDL during their interaction in that scene. Plainview is pretty mellow in this scene and his dismissal of Thompson's character is far from harsh or threatening. However, Thompson may have a point about DDL being like a panther who wandered onto the set. The panther doesn't have to be doing anything threatening; he could just be sitting there and people would be intimidated. In other words, a reputation (as well as an intensity of focus) can lead people (with insecurites) to assume that an actor of DDL's talent and focus would snap at them for interacting with him at all in-between takes.
Ronnie Sam Who is Thompson?
You've never heard of writer/comedian Paul F. Thompson?
Might’ve been different in person, as well. They shot the scenes several times, as well. It can sometimes be significantly different in person
They did several takes. Very often actors will try different readings of the same line to see how well it works. They went with the "low-simmering menace" take instead of "volcanic fury." Either way, it worked, because Daniel Day Lewis is the most intense person on the planet of Earth.
haha! EXACTLY!
(me too)
1:00 - 1:08
He was funny as hell in this role
We gain nothing by losing our heads.
What's he playing with in his mouth?
Dynomitedanee cocaine
What is this, a crossover episode?!?
