    What a dreadful review! Describing the car as an EV (twice) is misleading. You wouldn't group it in with a Nissan LEAF to a customer. Off hand comments like, "I don't like the idea of non plug-in hybrids, cos their pointless" and "I suppose it works for city driving, but to get the max efficiency you'd need a plug-in hybrid" just showed bias and misunderstanding. The 'close your eyes' game demonstrated nothing, the findings weren't even even discussed. And the "I can't wait for the Type-R" from everyone at the end just made it sound like Top Gear! If I was seriously buying an EV or Hybrid the Type-R wouldn't even be in the discussion. This review wouldn't help a genuine car buyer.

    I can’t help but feel the comments about plug-in hybrids being better aren’t quite right. If you have a short commute, and can charge at home and the office then yes; they’re great. But if you don’t keep them always charged up or do a long journey and deplete the battery - you’re just lugging around extra weight and end up with a car less efficient than a normal petrol or diesel counterpart. The Civic is by far the better option for most people I think!

    • @thechairman74
      @thechairman74 Год назад +5

      Yeah unfortunately there is no way that we can strike a compromise here. This Civic hybrid is actually rather ingenious but lacking a battery, it requires a real time source of power, and thus combustion is necessary. Clearly this is not a long term solution if you are assuming combustible fuels are unavailable. However, no one wants to fully commit to battery based electric propulsion because that's kind of a compromise too. Battery material is not inexhaustible, and is highly environmentally damaging to mine and manufacture. I think this is all a case of no one really wanting to admit, that while electric propulsion is the only obvious way to go, pun intended, there is no fully viable long term solution other than a fully electrified road network. I don't think anyone wants to contemplate the astronomical amount of money required to build that.

    • @callummccubbing4506
      @callummccubbing4506 Год назад +1

      Are you not doing the same thing here though? The only reason that engine is there is to charge the electric motors, it's just added weight isn't it? It doesn't make sense to be tbh

    • @thechairman74
      @thechairman74 Год назад

      @@callummccubbing4506 I think that the reason why the engine is being used as an electrical generator is that it is likely more efficient to do so because there are less losses through using a transmission and the engine can operate at its most efficient power range more often (not most economic, because it is not driving the wheels). I'd be curious to see what is the comparison in terms of fuel efficiency using this manner of propulsion versus IC engine directly driving the wheels.

    • @moonsapling
      @moonsapling Год назад +3

      @@thechairman74 In the case of the Civic, it does not have a transmission. No - it has a clutch that onky engages at highway speeds IF ever needed. Most of the time the engine is only ran as a generator and not connected to the wheels by any means.
      The Civic is more of an electric car with a generator on board - its simply designed like that. And having an engine means you can stop, put fuel in and carry on with your roadtrip. You have the freedom. You also have the freedom to drive in the city 98% on electricity keeping the city fresh.
      For me nor pure ICEs, nor full BEVs are the right solutions. In my eyes hybrid does the job better for a greater clientelle.

    • @thechairman74
      @thechairman74 Год назад +1

    The opinions in this video felt very uniformed. For example, HEV vs PHEV. They completely ignored the PHEV downside of lugging several hundreds of kilos of batteries around when they’re empty. Jason also kept banging on about the lack of a turbo on the 2-litre engine. It’s only there to charge the batteries! I feel they missed the point.

  • @samekemark9191

    Plato got it wrong saying it doesn’t have enough grunt having a 2-litre NA with an tiny electric engine to back it up, that is not how works on the present Honda hybrids. 😂😂😂 It is powered by the electric engine which is rather powerful (184hp/135kW) and it gets its electricity power from the combustion engine, only at certain speeds (80-120 kph) the combustion engine is connected to the drivetrain and propels the car. That is why this is different to most other hybrids.

    > Synthetic leather - actually good, no need to hurt animals.
    > Not a turbo engine - this solution provides class leading performance with low emissions and great fuel economy.
    > Decent handling - other reviewers actually like handling. Are you comparing to BMW or Porsche that's not in this class?
    > Old school because it's not phev - how can you acknowledge that not everyone has access to home charging and still punish for not being something you need. It's like "I like Porsches and this is worse, so I will give it a 7". And some real reviewers would argue that PHEVs don't make sense, because you are trying to make something more eco by adding so much more complexity and weight to an ICE car and it would make more sense to just skip this step and commit for a full EV.

  • @robtyman4281
    @robtyman4281 Год назад +65

    I've watched quite a few reviews of this new Civic. Reviews of it here in the UK, in the US, and in Australia. And they ALL cannot believe what a great car it is. Many of them loved how it drove, and appreciated the quality feel inside, not to mention how intuitive the touch screen was, and the clever driver assists it uses.
    The previous gen Civic was a mess to put it bluntly - ugly as anything, clunky looking. And only appealed to certain kinds of men....you know the ones I mean. Exactly. The kind who thought the Subaru Impreza was cool, and probably still own one or know someone who does.
    This Civic has a refined, mature look - everything the previous generation did NOT have. And for me that's a huge step forward. The Civic has grown up.....and about b****y time. It had played the overgrown boy racer' role for far too long. It was getting tiring tbh.
    This car may not stand out on the road, but that's no bad thing. At least it's not another anonymous blob that has no real style....but which more and more people seem to prefer now. Personally I don't really get SUV's - still. But that's just me evidently.
    This new Civic has a great dashboard - not too cluttered, but not frighteningly minimal either like that of Tesla cars.
    It also looks fun to drive, and you can tell it's the kind of car that won't let you down. The Fifth Gear team - you may not like the new Civic, but it seems an awful lot of people do. And that's what really matters.
    That guy with the grey hair and glasses ain't half annoying btw. Like a shouty, close minded car reviewer of old who would prefer to just drive ridiculously expensive sports cars ....that may be great to drive, but have a poorly laid out dashboard, and which are unreliable as hell.
    I think the new Civic is a game changer. Forget Tesla. And who needs an SUV, when a hatchback is this good?

Little mention was made of the fact that for most lower speed driving the car is running on electricity. At fast speeds it drives directly from the main engine. That is quite a feat of engineering. Poor review and full of mistakes. Perhaps Plato needs a reboot. Is there really any point in closing your eyes and trying to guess what mode it's in ? Honda have played a blinder with this car, the technology is very clever but it's unobtrusive which is exactly how it should be. I'd choose this over a Plug-in hybrid because of the economy and convenience. A Plug-in only makes sense if you do short trips and can charge at home easily. On longer trips you're lugging around a heavy battery and getting poor consumption.

  • @Maochan81
    @Maochan81 3 месяца назад +1

    Absolutely ignored the fact that this family hatchback does 0-100 in under 7 seconds and has a crazy low fuel consumption at the same time. Most plugin hybrids have a terrible consumption once the tiny battery is empty, because of the small engine in a heavy car.

    What a partial review. Every journalist praises this car, for its performance, consumption and not to mention the fact that it is Best in it’s class so phak in compare it to the competitors. Never mentioned the Mercedes and BMWs you guys drove how cheap plastic seats they have except AMG or M series /package but complains about an environmentalist econobox ….
    Never mentioned that this is technically an electric car charged by the gasoline engine as a unique drivetrain on the market …

    Let's say you're going in a 800 miles trip,you drive 30-50 miles on electric,and then what?
    You stop to plug it?
    Buy an electric then!

Some of the reviewers in this team do not appear to have a clue about what they are supposed to be reviewing, and apart from Jason Plato do they have any vehicle engineering knowledge? The advantage of this re gen hybrid over a plug in is the lack of weight in carrying around a huge battery. Just one example.

    Yes these people know how to drive cars but have limited knowledge about the engineering and every day use. This Civic is by far the best in class due to its very clever hybrid system (which wasn't mentioned in detail in the review) , Hondas reliability, build quality and customer service. Jason there are many vehicles on the market with faux leather (plastic seats) on the top of the range models some of them costing many thousands of pounds more than the Honda.

    This is the poorest review of the new Civic I've seen so far. But maybe that isn't the real intention behind this "production". Perhaps it is supposed to be
    a "comedy" or a parody of serious testing. Unfortunately, it isn't even funny but rather annoying on the whole. There are so many wrong statements in this video, like many others have already remarked. And what's this ranting about hyenas supposed to mean? The silhouette of the new Civic is that of an elegant sports car with a fastback . It reminds me of an Audi A5, just a bit shorter in length. Not even the aesthetic verdicts in this video are worth a penny. This is crap, not journalism.
