      @fzriow 2 месяца назад

@@adamwhite9304its because of the benefit in kind discount. If your a director and already max out your dividend payout and further money you take is 40% tax. So getting a taycan on personal finance is like giving yourself an 2k payrise a month without any tax and reduction on corporation tax, it makes it insanely cheap if you have a successful business. You can't really buy them through your business unless you can justify why your business needs it.

@@adamwhite9304generally they are not as you would need to justify to HMRC why you need a personal car bought for you through the buisness. A lot are leased personally due to the massive benefit in kind discount which essentially makes it 40% cheaper if you have a successful business and you've already maxed out your dividend pay. Also paying yourself more reduces corporation tax so saves you another 19% there

I bought a used Tacan 4S this past year. It had already lost 50% of its original value so it ended up being a good deal. For the cost it was the nicest and best performing car I could get. And the sports car I traded in was costing me $450 a month in gas. Here in Texas the average cost per KW is significantly lower than mentioned in this video. I have only used public chargers a hand full of times when on a road trip. So far it is one of the best cars I have ever owned.

It's not just about the newest version, if you have an EV that's been used for a few years, its battery health will degrade meaning it achieves less range. You could potentially drive a ICE car for 100,000+ miles with very little maintenance, not the case with EVs. We'll all be "upgrading" and sending our old cars to landfill more often.

The mileage isn't the main or biggest driver of battery life, as much as age & where it operates over its life span.
Hell, some people put 180,000 miles on a vehicle they use for work within 5/6 years. The average driver in the USA drives 15,000 miles a year. If you drive a lot 20,000 a year is nothing when you use it for work.
Plus, What is the life expectancy of an EV battery?
      between eight and 12 years
Plan on a service life of between eight and 12 years if your EV is regularly used in more extreme conditions. These are states with severe summers like desert states AZ part of California or winters, like they get in Chicago, or the Great Lakes area of the United States
Minimize the batteries at 100% state of charge
Electric cars already have installed with a battery management system that avoids them being charged and discharged at the extreme state of charge. Keeping the state of battery charge, from 0 percent to 100 percent , also improves the performance of the battery life of your vehicle. Even though a full charge will give you the maximum operating time, it is never a good idea for the overall lifespan of your battery.
Ev batteries like to be used & doing so extends the cars battery lifespan. Your vehicles batteries doesn't like fast charging or sitting on 100% charging.
Control the optimal battery state of charge during long storage
EVs that are parked or stored with an empty or full battery also degrades the battery.

This is a very complicated subject, where practically everyone's usage of their vehicle is different, so Mr Shmee's point about weighing up all the factors around electric car ownership is absolutely crucial. We have a home charger, which is seldom used because my wife's Kia EV6 gets charged FOC at her office via mainly their solar panels. Her previous employer offered the same. The car has been 100% reliable, which has a lot to do with the huge reduction in complexity over an ICE car. It's a real pleasure to drive on normal roads, i.e. not those quiet country lanes you see RUclips car reviewers using.
On the odd occasion we do a journey over 250 miles, being early birds we leave home early & plan where we'll stop for a fast charge, the car charging to 80% in eighteen minutes. A real no-brainer. Regarding battery life, as another poster mentions with a bit of care it'll last for many years, and even if it dropped to half its capacity the car would still be perfectly fine for my wife's use.

I also get 3 years free charging at any Electrify America charging station and free charging at my Porsche dealership. Since I use the car primarily within a 100 mile radius from my home, I rarely have to avail myself to those services. Thanks for an insightful analysis. As you pointed out the experience of running an EV depends very much on where you live, your typical pattern of car use and whether you are an enthusiast - and therefore inclined to change your vehicles regularly. Every potential buyer is on a spectrum of EV suitability. There are people with negative experiences. But let me illustrate what it is like to be in a near-ideal situation. We live in sub-tropical Australia, have 12 kW of reliable solar and 80% of our EV charging is electricity that we generate. The remainder is supercharger fees at 70 cents (36 pence)/ kWh. Our 2019 Tesla Model 3 P- has covered 120,000, still has a reliable 440 km of range and has never been ‘serviced’. We are on our third set of tyres, have replaced the 12-volt battery and wiper blades. That is all - literally. The brake pads are still in good shape. The car is a little scruffy after 5 years of constant use, and has depreciated a lot. But I don’t care. I am not interested in selling. The car is comfortable, safe, quick and very cheap transport.

As for production costs VW was losing money on all EV's it sold, plus they don't make as much on servicing them so is it any wonder they don't really want to sell them to us. I've owned an EV for three years now. 95% of my charging is done at home while I sleep. It has a range of over 300 miles (far more than I ever do without taking a break) and when I stop at a rapid charger it goes to 80% in the time it takes me to have a pee and a coffee, a little longer if I need 100%. It's very fast, clean and doesn't stink like a diesel. Because I charge at home, it's far cheaper to run than an equivalent petrol. I'll be sticking with EV's for my next car. I enjoy older, heavily depreciated premium and sports cars with proper engines, which is why I’ve had almost forty of them in the last twenty years, mostly Mercedes.
When I look at these newer sports cars like most McLaren, I feel sorry for the guys’ insecurities and extreme depreciation, often funded by finance. I would never touch any car from the last ten or fifteen years and I’d never spend more than £10-20k on any older car used as a daily driver. That budget still covers the C63 E55/63 and many V8 or even V12 German premiums or the exotics.
An A8 or CLS/S-Class or an SL at £5-15k could almost match the specs of the sort of cars people get themselves into hideous debt for. They are a lot more comfortable and reliable, too. Without insecurities and desperately feeding their ego, so many people could get decent cars well within their means and focus on what is more important in life.
Motoring and being able to travel across continents for very little is a blessing.
What is happening to the industry and generally, in the world economy and governance is a dark, intentionally destructive rearrangement of resources and industries, with civil liberties heavily affected. They don’t want us to drive anything, anywhere and EVs are just a vehicle to achieve this. Hard times are coming. It’s time to reflect and seek more meaning in life.

Public charging ups the kw hour cost to c 31p on the supercharger network. No where near the figures you stated. For your use case you made a poor choice both in choice of type of EV and your location.

Part of the reason for depreciation is also how quickly the technology is evolving, look at the capabilities of the latest version of the Taycan vs the original, look at the cost curve of lithium ion batteries. But the thing is that this is likely to bleed over to ALL cars - as EV's develop rapidly where is the market going to be for old fashioned petrol-burning cars that still work in the same way as 20 years ago? They will also look obsolete. So the disruption to the market will end up making all cars depreciate in value more quickly than they used to IMO, that's just a consequence of this transition..

Don’t want to not pick but… You get 3 miles per kWh with Taycan which gets you close to 6 for £1.5 which is better than your quoted 4 miles on Ferrari. Besides its location and charger specific, .80p is higher tariff that BP is charging for their fast chargers but there are plenty of cheaper ones - including if you subscribe with them you get 20% off. One point stands though - your electricity will be always cheaper, much cheaper.
As to used car price - taycan wasn’t worth 160k to start with - just because they ask that much doesn’t mean it does. The electric car prices need to come down as this is the biggest issue holding people back. I’m not going pay 200-300 more on lease over ICE if I’m not even gonna save that much monthly on running it. Simple math. People, especially these days, look at that first and foremost.

      1. You charge at home, better yet if you have special cheap night tariff
      2. You drive a lot - absolute min 10k a year
Taycan isn’t economical choice, never was, it’s a Porsche that performs like a super car and that’s how they priced it. But obviously contrary to ICE models - battery doesn’t last forever and still is very very costly to replace. Personally- it seems to be one of the EVs done right that I would love to own, money no object. But looking at used car market - 4 years old - you can get a really nice car for 60k.

I know several people who are saving so much with their purchase of new Model 3's that their monthly payment to own is less than their equivalent gas bill was on their car so essentially the car is free to them plus that model does not depreciate as much as a Mercedes E class, BMW 5 series which is their direct competitor. Your lame analogy of it being a "phone" is just retarded but you know that

Because here in the states the oil co's have masive influence in politics as well as media. The highly iognorant and easily mentally manipulated cannot afford EV's therefore in order to protect their fragile ego's they latch onto the stupid rumors such as:
The catch fire - completely wrong of course go look at the number of fires on EV's versus ICE cars EV's are a tiny fraction
EV's completely lose their range in the cold - BS. Tesla's lose only a very small percentage of their range
"Range anxiety" - Lucids can get >500 mile range, Tesla's usually get >#20 miles range which is comperable to most ICe cars, Teslas and most other EV's warn drivers of range constantly and map where the neaarest chargers are plus there is only a msall percentage of people who drive over 300 miles per trip. In most parts of the US chargers are plentiful, easy to operaate, cheap, and pretty quick to get the car to 80%
Nobody wants an EV - EV's are by far the largest growing and fastest growing segment of the car industry. Again pure ignorance
"Sales have slowed/those who wanted one bought one - ugh! Of course sales have slowed as a percentage. IF 100K pople bought one in 2017 and 10K bought one the year prior that is 1000% growth. 2022 they sold 918K EV's in the US then in 2023 1.4MM that is an increase of 60% so rate of growth slowed a it had to otherwise they'd have to sell 9MM to keep the rate of growth which was impossible but keep in mind that is still 500K more EV's year over year which is amazing.
EV's cannot sustain due to the electrical grids - pure 100% stupidity. Yes they can, they in no way put a high bruden on the grid. The vast majority are charged late at night/early morning when electricity is chepa and readily available you can program when your car charges so as to minimize it's cost to you.
EV's weigh so much they ruin the roads - more completel ignorance. Most EV's are within 5% of their ICE counterparts such as BMW, Mercedes, even Toyota Camry or Accord go look it up.

Good report. We are not in the same league but we wanted to try an electric car alongside our ICE cars, of which we have four. We eventually went for a 2020 BMW i3S. Having recently installed solar at our home we can often charge the car from 30% for free but even on a low night tariff that cost is sub £3.00. We use it all the time and seldom drive our ICE cars, however, I think what is having a dramatic effect on EV sales is the ridiculous cost of outside charging. As you mention, costs can be up to £0.80p per kwh which is verging on daylight robbery. I think the Government should step in and set limits to electricity costs and bring them more in-line with domestic rates.

And they are not for everyone, if you live in a city they are great and really comfortable, but the reality is that since the tech is so new, newer models make older models deprecate really fast.

No, your biggest issue is believing it's a much bigger problem than it actually is...... The NTSB in the US, recorded 180'000 ICE car fires during 2022. Tesla's own statistics show that out of around 6 million Teslas so far produced over 11 years, only around 250 have caught fire Worldwide..... As a comparison, around 300 petrol and diesel cars catch fire *each day* in the UK....

    • @jimsteinway695

@@Brian-om2hhthat’s BS. ICE fires are easily extinguished AND they don’t start by themselves. EVs can run away thermally ignite and take down a whole,e structure because they are very difficult to put out. We’ve had three EV fires in our town this year with not one reported gas fire. I’m an engineer and worked with lipo batteries in my business we had 11 fires start while charging or just by themselves.
ICE cars require HEAT to ignite. But they can’t create their own heat. EVs and lithium batteries can create their own heat and start fires by themselves.

They only work for a specific market, home owner with off road parking and a home charger, and change their cars often, say every 3 years. So the customers that can afford them, the wealthy. And that isn't typical of the average motorists. Great video Tim

People have woken up to some basic facts (1) China is building coal fired power stations at a significant rate e.g. 2 per week were permitted in 2022 and an additional 47.4GW of coal power capacity came online in 2023. This increase accounted for two-thirds of the global rise in operating coal power capacity, which climbed 2% to 2,130GW. China's 70.2GW of construction that was underway in 2023 represents 19-times more than the rest of the world's 3.7GW. (2) EVs simply don't work for a lot of people. (3) Norway is not the exemplar, its unique, it is a tiny country in terms of population with a vast amount of hydro-electricity on tap. (4) EVs in Europe are more about relationships to energy sovereignty than environmental considerations e.g. Russia turning off the gas supply. (5) People are now aware we live in a goldilocks interglacial period caused by natural global warming and cooling cycles.

Loved this video, explaining the current EV market conditions and the various factors that affect the demand for EV, in general. So essentially, government mandates have been put in place to tax those who currently own a higher end EV to cut their losses, which originated from the actual drop in demand for those higher end EVs, and also regular model EVs, as well. The case of passing over the loss to the consumer because demand for a particular product “vehicle type” has declined. Glad to see you were able to make sound decisions to cut your actual loss on some of these EV’s, Tim. Car ownership and collections truly are another type of investment for those that can afford it. The economics behind a car collection as diverse as your portfolio, is very interesting, to say the least. Insightful and entertaining, you should do more uploads focusing on the background details/financials of owning a supercar collection. Have a great weekend, Tim. 🏎️🍾🏎️
