I have to give these guys credit: These amp guys have some guts to do this.
BluesLicks101
They weren't smiling much during the test ... they kinda all sound the same. Square wave.
Blug was my favorite guy since he had the most scientific approach and cool German accent. Plus he makes impressive portable amps in a pedal size but expensive.
@@ThemFuzzyMonsters It appears all these amp gurus have a certain gnarl and midrange voicing they like. They don't like the harsh upper mids of Marshall and want some body in the low mids, but they don't want the low end too flabby.
@@ThemFuzzyMonsters because with the configurability of the amps combined with the fact that they were left as configured by people who didn't have their own amp to configure lol...a better test would be put everything at noon little bit o reverb and then ask them which one is theirs. I bet they would be able to nail it in a heartbeat as well as possibly identify some of the competitors - also wouldn't have the ear memory confusing first 12 minutes where mostly what happened was the creation of a shitload of cognitive dissonance prior to an intense analytical performance...LOL again.
skunkproductionsMLA
I agree ... at the same time Distortion being a square wave so they all face the same sonic wall, especially with high gain. So, as you described, they all go for the same sort of EQ/sound it is doomed to end-up in a similar turf, and there is no way out.
Blu guitar already sounded fantastic before he even touched a knob :O
To me that and the HK were the worst of the bunch.
A couple of them sounded quite the same. Thomas is right there. He couldn't recognize it.
I also have a Bulguitar and it's amazing that you can put that thing on your pedalboard.
all preference. i could tell the revv and the bluguitar. i liked the blu, laboga and the revv. i listen to the grain of the distortion i like it tight clear and bright/spanky, you can make it warm or round or ratty from there, not so much vice versa. the blu instantly was closest to what i like. the engl sounded the worst here but it has a ton of options, barely scratched the surface and and we can't underestimate speaker/cab, it could benefit from being ran through an engl cab. personally i don't go for amps that sound too specific to themselves. like the revv sounds like a revv the hk sounds like the hk black spirit series, the friedman sound like a friedman, engl sounds like an engl, but that's fine if it's what you like. all preference
Pay attention people
Notice how NONE of these guys turned the gain all the way up.
which just goes to show that the best tone setting minds in the world.... must all be chumps. how else am I going to mask my flawed playing?
@@szatanovsky just don't forget to add a noise suppressor and 808 to that
Cause you know......you need more gain on an amp that's built for high gain
Because they are whimps and posers that should leave the hall
@@StuntcatTV you guys seem to not like metal that very much
Why would I crank up the gain all the way on a high gain amplifier? Who does that? You turn up the gain all the way on "vintage" or mid gain amplifiers, because it sounds great. Bur not on high gain stuff. My 2203 with the gain all the way up and a Boss SD-1 almost reaches gain territories that the ENGL starts with in the Lead channel :D
Would have been fun also to see each tweak their own amps to demonstrate what they thought was the best tone it could make. Of course, how you tweak an amp to fit in with your band is probably different than how you'd have it set in studio isolation.
YEEEES
Agree +1
Agreed, but nobody knows these beasts like they do.
Thanks so much for including me in this bro!!!
Sammy Boller new sub! 👍
“I purposely did not pick my own amp....thought that made better sense” - Dave Friedman
“Best sounding for me was MY amp......because I know my tone” - Revv.
I understand both statements, makes sense!
Friedman is saying "I know my stuff, but I can appreciate this other sound/amp as well"
Revv was saying "I love the sound of my own amp, that's why I build them so for sure it's my favorite"
I wouldn't expect an Amp builder not to like their own creation so that's fine and understandable to me.
I'd imagine Friedman also thinks his amp is the best (IMO his amps are the best I've played though after watching this video I really need to try out an ENGL), I think he was just meaning that it would be a more interesting comment for him to choose a different one.
I'd like to see the same thing, but with dirt pedal builders.
JHS will do this I'm sure.
There is a video where I believe 5 or so pedal builders brought three or so pedals and each person could pick one out of the 15 or so pedals for a pedal board, but not one of their own pedals.
Fran Blanche is right here on RUclips.
what about with only Tube-Screamer type of circuit ?
How almost every builder chose the Revv 100p as the best sounding one/best tweak! 🤣
Awesome job Jay and Dan!
yeah that is cool and I want a Revv 7-40 amp.
It sounded really good, great amp.
This was a great idea for a video Jay! Brilliant! Had a blast watching this. Blown away by that Blu Amp. Wow!
This was an awesome idea but rough execution, I look forward to seeing more videos like this.
Wow this video is pure awesomeness, great idea! About the tweaking: I think these amplifiers sounded pretty good with the default settings, but the amp designers definitely made them better.
Great use of the guests and gear J! Super fun video, thoroughly enjoyed this, keep up the great work my man!
I love Dave Friedman's approach "Just hearing and you ears, listen and turn your knobs" since that is how I dial in my amps so if a master amp builder has that then I am on the right path. Revv is my favorite new amp builder. Love ENGL as well.
Great vid! Love seeing all the amp designers together ,trying to set each other's amps!
RUclips closed captioning called him Sammy Ebola. 😂
What a great bunch of geniuses. No egos just a common love and quest for tone. I just got the Bluguitar amp 1 Mercury and it sounds insane. Hard to describe but it is the sound i have been looking for. Would be happy to own any of the amps in this contest though. It really is splitting hairs with how good they sound.
Good job, jay.
I like the bluguitar. Sounded good prior to tweaking.
I watched this video with a happy smile. Thank you for making this video.
I like no.2 fridman amp. sound like a rocky mountain.
This is one of best videos with all of you guys that weekend!
they all sounded great ... super interesting to see that all this highend amps sound incredible already, but is all about how you tweek them ..
This was really great ! ! nice to see comp meet and have fun !
Wow- amazing that you organized this.
This is awesome on so many levels!!! 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
This was an awesome video. What a room chock full of “amperage” goodness! Thanks all!
The ONLY one I could guess, was the H&K, because I'm not comfortable how sputtery and scabby it's distortion sounds, lol. All the others were quite similar, some had a tad more balls. Surprisingly alike, actually. One of the most informative vids from this gathering I've seen.
Yes, H and K is fizzy as fuck, owned two and they both were gone quickly.
@WORST CHANNEL EVER You never heard any refer to an amp having a fizzy top end? Its really hard to describe.
@WORST CHANNEL EVER You get a lot of high end harmonics that create a "fizzy" tone which sounds like the word... "ffffzzzzz". Many amps will have this if the gain and treble are cranked too high, but other amps just tend to be "fizzy" by nature.
@WORST CHANNEL EVER No, this has nothing to do with noise.
This is brilliant. What a great idea for a video!
I think everyone of those amps are amazing. But my 2 favorite sounding amps were the Friedman and Blug Irodium.
HUGE RESPECT to the guys for beeing so honest!
They were all great sports about everything. Awesome dudes all around.
As soon as the engl turned on he really didn’t have to adjust anything it sounded wonderful.
They all sounded great! Thank you.
I am not on the Freidman bandwagon and thought some of them sounded fizzy. But in this one the BE seems to stay closest to the classic Marshall sound while solving some of the issues with them like bass flubbiness and slow response when saturated. The BE retained the crisp treble and clarity in the mids and highs really well, while also managing to be dynamic and not bottom end fart out. It had its own well defined place in the frequency range, which would help place it in a mix. What was best though is a matter of taste. I was surprised how good the Blu amp sounded. I liked the Revv too, but it strayed from the Marshall thing. Not a bad thing to do, but Marshall is the sound of rock and the benchmark to me. I really like the late 70s JMP MkII with the master volume.
The Friedman and Rev stood out in this. Friedman vintage sounds, Rev for Modern. The Blu and Black Spirit have a lot of variables so they can win potentially with more fooling with.
It helps when you start with a bunch of heads that cost more than my car.
That was hilarious, entertaining and instructive. Loved it!
What people should take from this video: All these amps are absolutely great and will get the job done. They sound very similar and people have to remember that the cabinet actually makes all the difference. What amp you choose depends on what features you need, watts and budget. Excellent video!
Very cool video. I have a Friedman Amp and as you notice, very little movement was needed, that Revv amp sounded outstanding as well. Hughs and Kettner, fizzy as shit, that should have been the give away.
What an awesome idea for a video! It would've been nice for them to have a bit more time, but it was still great!
Props to the amp guys for doing this 👍
Great idea to make such a video. Congrats to Henning and especially to Jay for being the perfect "moderator".
Respect for the amp developers to make time free for this session! My amp verdict: Who doesn't want to have them all? :-)
Harald Engels it proves that guitar that a lot of thread heads are full of shit
Awesome. But now i like Friedman and Revv (i playd some times at HG )))
At first I sensed some tension with all the amp makers sitting there. In all honesty, each one probably wants to be the best at what they do.
That said, everyone is on the same team. Team let's all make killer amps!
Awesome you got them to do and they all seem really cool
Thanks everyone who took part, all of the amps sound fantastic. Great video
Great guys and fantastic sports :)
How in the world does Henning get these guys to do this 🤔$$$$$? I was surprised that the ENGLE with all the knob twisting basically sounded the same the whole time. Glad to see the Thomas Blug amp hold its own.
Sheer f-cking tenacity probably
Henning is probably the most self-motivated and hard working cat in our community. He sold every single one of us on this vision and I loved every second of it :)
He's got the photos.
Some of the knobs he turned on the Engl were not engaged, so they didn't have an effect at all :D But still, can confirm from my Savage Mk1, the EQ is somewhat limited in its range
Best video from the whole event :) Cheers for having us on Jay! Next year: clean tones?!
Definitely clean tones :)
Hughes & Kettner you guys build incredible amps! There wasn’t a bad amp in the whole bunch of them, but there’s something special about a H&K.
Thanks Adam, we do try our best - glad you're into it! And cheers to Martin from Engl for dialing ours in like a beast this time too :)
I would criticize, or praise, but I have never been able to try any of these amps. I think I would be happy with any of them. They did a great job tweaking them too.
Blug and Friedman , Rev Amos sounded great ,
I think the cab makes almost all of them sound similar! I only knew #2 (Friedman) because of the lower gain setting.
Friedman was too easy to spot because of the lower gain tweak. Some amps like engl and h&k with so many channels and switches..too difficult to tweak in 30s.
All sound quite similar because of the huge importance of the cabinet-mic.
The BE 100 Deluxe has the lower gain structure tweak on the back of the amp. The last switch he used was channel switch to plexi channel from BE channel, which negated all of his knob tweakings he did because plexi has separate tone controls. I have the amp its wicked good.
What impressed me the most: two non-tube amps kept up quite admirably! Really dug how I could hear the sag in the Black Spirit.
SeanPierceJohnson the HK sounded the worst imho
this video was such a sick idea, must have been hell to coordinate tho
Haha, it really was nuts behind the scenes. We even had to delay the shooting by a day to work out all the logistics. However, all of these guys were so supportive of the concept and were great in moving their schedule around to make it work. Too much fun!
Revv & Friedman heads sounded the best - they all are top notch high gain builders - BluGuitar is pretty damn impressive for its size & technological advancements though. Great group of people & fun experiment.
Awesome show and what a great idea!
Awesome ! ! Wish there were also designers from Vox - Orange - Marshall - Blackstar - Laney - Hiwatt - Fender there too ! But i guess that would lead to a Fight , Loi !
I loved Amps 3, 4 and 5 ..Thought #4 was the best overall but was shocked that #3 was the Bluguitar Amp1 which I thought was 2nd best - thing sounds killer for $800 compared to the others that cost a fortune anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 !
Thomas Blug is the Strat Jester of Hoboken. The man can play.
They did well. They all sounded great, and just subtle differences.
Props to Laboga. Might be the odd man out here. I've always wanted a "fat and dark" Marshall. I honestly liked the Friedman but Laboga was like its smoother and darker version.
why don't you get marshall jtm45 or marshall vintage modern?
I have the Dirty Shirley...sounds amazing!
Great episode !
I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Blu sounded incredible. Every bit as good as the real tube amps. The H&K sounded awful.
woah dude someone that agrees with me
The Blug Amp _is_ a real tube amp... In a way ...
But I agree, it sounds great.
@@revylokesh1783 only the preamp, and it's class D which is unusual to say the least for audio
I thought the H&K sounded terrible too, and I picked it out of the blind test immediately.
I agree. The H&K (at least how it was dialed in in this clip) sounded terrible.
Thats a cool idea! Another GSone highlight.
New sub here... Great video jlj... I like to see content like this...🤘
2 and 4 for me punch eq . rock n roll 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Same.
They all sounded very similar, low volume high gain preamp fizz.........
The nervousness on the Hughes and Kettner fellow. Lol
Some people just don’t like the spotlight. They build amps in a basement for a reason haha. Sounds great to me.
he is probably thinking about the talk with the staff later....where did we go wrong? his amp sounds quite crappy on it's own but compared to friedman and revv...the only good thing about hk is looks i love the blue light.
@@yaniv-nos-tubes That's the real reason most people buy their amps. I was so glad when I was able to get rid of my Grandmeister 40. They really sound like shite
All good , but for me the Freidman and Rev be my picks of pref .
No. 2, the Friedman, has a clarity to it that sets it apart from the others. There's a good reason why Friedman is considered the top dog in the market today.
That's really cool - how could I not have seen that? 👍😄
One of the most fun vids I've made :)
@@JayLeonardJ You always seem to have so much fun when you are playing the guitar and what you are doing is sooo much fun and inspiration to watch. ❤
I already knew the Freidman and Lavoca weren't my sound, but was surprised the H&K sounded so poor. REVV surprised me. I've been keen on ENGL Powerballs and 5150 III's for the past decade or so. I will keep my eye on Revv
Check out deizel
When I had the pleasure of testing the Revv generator it was a great sounding amp, given its enormous price, but something in the attack of it didnt feel right. When playing, I couldnt feel the amp and the amp did not respond that well to my intentions. Kinda hard to explain but there are definitely better amps out there for less price.
i dont think the friedman sounds the best, but it sounded the most unique of all the amps. that impresses me.
I like alle the amps, but I assume the ENGL is probably the hardest one to tweek within a minute. The Rev and the Friedman stood out a little bit.
Great group of amps and amp designers.
Blug and his amp are the bomb.
For me this video shows that it doesn't matters which amp you are playing if even the builders are to able to recognize their amp. So it's the best to find the sweet spot of the amp and have fun!
All those amps sounded really good.
I liked the Friedman, BluGuitar and Revv.
Edit: Surprised how good the BluGuitar amp sounded.
“Listen” best advice
The hard reality, the more gain there is the more they all sound the same. I am not sure that it was a pleasant exercise for the designers, they were clearly laughing more at the beginning, when they thought that there product's tone was more unique than it turned-out to be. The fact most could not differentiate their amp in a line-up is not good marketing.
They also went through the same cab, so that reduces a lot the sonic differences between amps. Many amps have more sounds than the one dialed in, so you could make them sound quite differently anyway.
Great stuff! Friedman sounded best to me followed closely by Blug...
Great video : ) Thanks for sharing.!
Best amp video this year
the blu and the revv are sick
The low end grind on number five was absolutely unreal
They’re all pretty close in terms of distorted tone, but in terms of practicality, the Blug by a long shot. It’s the only one you can take as carry-on on a plane so you don’t have to use a flogged backline rental POS.
#1 for me... over the internet.Look , to all you guys. It means a lot to all of us that you come together to do this. We do understand that there are many variables that can make changes for each to be OUR sound. Because of you unselfishness we are all winners.Thank you.
Thank you man! Really appreciate the post :)
I wasn’t nuts about the H&K, but if I were shopping for a new amp, the rest sounded similar enough for me to simply go with whichever of 1-5 is the cheapest.
They were preset to sound similar before these guys spent 30 seconds to tweak them. I have the Friedman Be 100 deluxe and its capable of much much more tonal variety than just that one. Its based off Marshall jvm 800 but with modern gain and low end but also has a plexi channel. The Engl has a more modern aggressive attack to it. Doesnt sound like Friedman at all to me. I have Engls as well. Hughes and Kettner sounded like a modeler to me, not familiar with that one.
Bluguitar Amp 1 for you then. It’s a sleeper amp.
awesome video!!
Awesome!
Brilliant concept.
That was fun Jay :0)
Skill par excellence. Magicians.
I love how at 7:46 Richard from H and K ruthlessly goes for the mid scoop
RUTHLESSLY
I think my favourites was the engl savage and the revv generator
Close caption changed Sammy’s last name to Ebola 😷 REVV Rules!!!
All the amps are great but I’m holding out for the triple power amp Revv for a WDW solution in one head 🌊🏜🌊🤩
To truly be a fair contest:
1. they should have had one person dial in the same sound
2. set them all at 12
3. Have each rep set up their preferred setting.
This was setup weird and didnt have a clear output. Everything sounded like it was under a blanket.
The more you think about the video the more you notice that it could actually have been quite informative and usefull, but it isn't. It is obvious that whoever planned this didn't put any efford whatsoever into the video
It's supposed to be entertaining, not scientific.
I get it, which why I clicked to begin with, but the arrangement was a bomb.
I really like the Laboga amp after this I’ll check more out by them
Wow I got a perfect score! Hahaha love this video
Revv and friedman tone for the win
Give Thomas Blug the Guitar and nearly EVERY Amp sounds perfect! :)
