Don’t remember when but miyazaki became the company president of fromsoft after ds1 but still acts as director/producer for basically every souls game. It’s almost like projects turn out better when management actually understand what their team is making and know what they want in the end

The evergaols are optional also, another example of organic difficulty. And FromSoftware made the design decision to spawn your runes outside of the optional fight if you die - meaning you lose nothing by giving these bosses a try.
Thank god for that !!
Yeah it was a better design choice than what they did in DS3
But what about bosses like margit and other dungeon bosses, i wished they also left the runes outside the boss gate
Easily one of the best games ever made. The level of detail is beyond staggering. The"lands between" seems like a real place. Even how you "learn" spells: it makes sense in the game's universe, and it feels like you personally "know" the spell. This shit is insane. This is the apex of what an open world video game can be.

Fun history fact for everyone mispronouncing Evergaol: Gaol is how the word "Jail" was spelt for centuries up until the early 1800s, when book publishing within the USA became so popular that the American spellings of English words started to take over as the accustomed way to write these words. In Elden Ring, when you are doing a Evergaol bossfight, you are fighting a prisoner sentenced for eternity.
You even hear Blackguard tell how he was in "gaol" with Dungeater, and pronounces it "jail".
Makes it fun when some Evergaols have Stonesword key goblins, and you then technically just remove one of the locks that would keep them in, just to make their life sentence a death sentence >:D

The key to a sucessful game is a FINISHED GAME. Not an early access game with constant updates.
But was it finished tho?
I'm surprised you didnt mention the flasks refilling when finishing a group of enemies out in the overworld... allowing you to truly explore and follow your fancy without worrying if you're stocked up on flasks.
There is something like that in ds3 but it's a lot more rare and less generous
Dude, when I discovered that I was so pumped.
I think it is natural and acceptable for people to 'not care' beyond baseline success. That allows for a very healthy range of choices and reactions ranging from "you failed to even give the most basic shit" to "under no circumstances were you required to do this, but you did so anyways". Miyazaki & co may not be everyone's cup of tea, but as someone who abandoned Bloodborne on release only to come back later due to the RUclips lore community and become absolutely addicted to the entire franchise, holy shit my guy, FromSoft is like the AboveAndBeyond train that has no brakes. They are the living embodiment of the long, hard, sure road to success; they've shown unapologetic commitment tempered by disciplined authenticity, a humble love for the moments of joy and awe their games have virtually become a byproduct for, as well as a dash of malicious, predatory, grounded realism.
In a way, FromSoft acts a lot like a real-life cell or immune system in the critical ways that are abjectly lacking in the majority of the industry. Namely, once FromSoft decides what is good, they have stayed true to that vision regardless of peer pressures. For Demon's Souls (OG game), it was the Vice President of Sony saying the game was dogshit. For Sekiro, it was seemingly every games propagandist *cough* I mean journalist and their brother/uncle/mother/daughter. A cell without a cell wall is the most inclusive thing on earth. It is also dead without exception. Likewise an immune system is trusted absolutely with defense of the greater whole and must be absolutely ruthless in its simple recognition of what is/isn't 'the body'. The immune system isn't attacking anything as much as it is simply reinforcing the original image of what the body should be. If you choose to paint a picture and another brush comes along and actively interferes with your vision, yeeting it off your canvas is the most basic possible requirement to self-validating your vision as a painter, if you will. Within the uncompromising harshness of these borders, however, there is a true opportunity for life in abundance to take root and flourish. Souls players KNOW the sheer "come, taste, and see that it is good" X factor under the 'git gud' surface, which is why I think so many players readily hop into the gatekeeping trenches. It isn't arbitrary - it is a voluntary sanity check for those who can't be told why overcoming adversity is a good thing - we all have to experience it to truly taste and see it is good for ourselves in a way that words alone will always fail to convey.
Sorry for the rant. The long & short of it I guess is that there's probably nothing I love more than someone who chooses to do an unbidden good thing, above and beyond any expectation of duty or reward, especially when done in the face of peer pressures/when it is explicitly unpopular/when doing such will earn you open scorn & ridicule. FromSoft seems to manage an incredible resilience overall to both internal rot (level of effort and love they pour into their games; e.g. dare I say the Souls games HAVE soul) and external rot (coercive, manipulative, ill-fated influences to conform or otherwise abandon FromSoft's chosen principles).

When you play Elden Ring you can see the passion, soul and effort they put in. They took everything they learned from previous titles and expanded on it. All for the same price as the previous games. Meanwhile EA did the complete opposite with Battlefield 2042, charged up to $120, and didn't even have a scoreboard on release. Fromsoft is still making mostly finished games.
I truly think Fromsoft has made entirely “completed” games. Not that they’re not sometimes missing content but that the games ARE what they envisioned when they’re released not months later or at the end of their lives. Everything we get after is bonus stuff.

The fact that this game, while being heavily single-player focused is STILL pulling in 700-800k players over 3 weeks after release constantly on Steam alone is really telling.
Tbf, the multiplayer in this game (although a bit clunky) is incredible, obviously playing with friends is great but invading someone and being able to act and feel like an in-game boss yourself and fighting against players with wildly different sets, skill, classes, and playstyles is incredible, plus using the already beautiful and incredibly wide array of backdrops, areas and locations in this game make every invasion so unique and incredible, or frustrating of course, but still, the things you can experience in this game are incredible.

The reason FromSoft keeps making good games is that Miyazaki is at the helm and he is a creative visionary. When you have a creative at the head in a creativity based industry rather than just another fucking suit, things tend to go well.
Yep. Miyazaki has flat out lied to upper management/business in order to implement mechanics and features in the souls games. Wheras any other dev team would have just just rolled over and let the business-side tell them what to do.
For example, Miyazaki didn’t tell upper management about the “souls” system when he was working on demons souls, because he knew they would tell him to remove it. They also asked him to not include the praise the sun gesture in dark souls, because they said it was “too uncool”.

These “Souls” games aren’t really for me, but I LOVE how this game has managed to be such a success and has had the ability to bring so many people together. It’s nice that a game developer for once has decided to actually finish a game that was also a new IP and LOOK what happened! Huge respect to FromSoftware and Act Man, hope you’re still enjoying your distraction to your work lmaooo

@@t2av159 it’s more just a distaste for specific genres, really. I personally love coop and roguelike games, but have little to no interest in RTS and moba games. And y’know, bein like that is perfectly okay, as the person isn’t saying they’re bad, just going out and stating “eh, I tend to get much more enjoyment out of other genres than I typically do from games like these”. No need to judge them for being like that
I think there’s something about a newly released title that, not only lives up to the hype, but completely surpasses it that just blew everyone away.
Miyazaki and his team at FromSoftware are truly god sends. Ever since Dark Souls 1 in 2011, they just don’t miss. The games have been either awarded Games of The Year (DS2, DS3 for the Golden Joystick Award; Sekiro, Elden Ring for Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards). Even games like DS1 and Bloodborne that didn’t win any GoTY award, they are still hailed as one of the greats of this generation.
Hell, even though Armored Core 6 most likely won’t be winning GoTY for 2023, it still shows that FromSoftware and Miyazaki respect their roots and the fans who’s been with them since the beginning. I mean, the entire SoulsBorne franchise is them paying homage to their first game, King’s Field
Imagine how many people played elden ring and just found out about bloodborne and Dark Souls.. i m legit happy for them...
I got Bloodborne for free on psplus and bought Sekiro thinking it was Ghost of Tsushima so I got both on my library. I never played either however. Having such a great time on this game, I'm definitely gonna go back to them and try em out.

If you didn’t know: Miyazaki got the idea for player summons when his car got stuck in the snow and some strangers happened along and helped him push the car out and then disappeared into the night.

This game has most of what makes Skyrim and TW3 so popular in the FromSoft form and with their absolute peak combat. The exploration makes me feel like a kid watching the LOTR trilogy at the movies. Everything is huge and theres so much environmental storytelling that casual gamers wont ever appreciate. This is a great review for an equally as great game.
I love this game.
I always stayed away from Souls Like games because I always heard they were super hard, but I’m so glad I gave this a shot. I beat the game for the first time at around 140 hours because I did almost all of the side bosses and tried getting all the weapons and armor sets before I took on the last boss. Now at 240 hours and almost finishing my first New Game+ and I am still having a blast. I haven’t played anything else since I got this game.
It really sucks when you see reviews of people who gave up on the game at the Tree Sentinel because they are missing out on such a great game.
I have played this game for about 100 hours, and I still haven't seen my first ending. There are so many things to do and find! The amount of content is just so rich that you just can't seem to stop playing it...
It has been such a long time since I had this much fun with! Even with some of the flaws that the game has, I still think that this is one of the best games of the decade.
I agree, i mean all games that are considered the greatest of all time have flaws and this is up there with them.
And all this without......DLC!!! LOL

If Elden Ring had quest markers telling you where to go, you wouldn't be exploring, you'd be on a field trip with a tour guide showing you what they want you to see.
tell that to ubisoft
Not necessarilly
No one is really asking for quest markers or UbiSoft style/MMO vomit all over the map. That's just RUclipsrs needing something to talk about claiming "THEY" want it. Who's they? Its a strawman. We have custom markers to help somewhat and the NPC patch was VERY welcome. Many would have loved a simple quest log of sorts to keep track, because the writing is cryptic enough, especially when most of the quests refer to places or things you haven't even seen yet, so you have no frame of reference. Google solves that, but it would be nice to stay in-game. Look what Last of Us and Uncharted did with their journals. Extremely well crafted and immersive. It would have fit right in here. Its not like there are that many quests, so an artfully created journal of your interactions with NPC would have been 100X better. But then that's what WIKIs are for and FromSoft knows the players would do their job for them=)
Markers showing what you have discovered is what I want. They already do it for points of interest, and they just implemented it for some NPCs and merchants, which is good. It doesn't take away from the discovery of things, but does help the player remember things that would be impossible to remember otherwise without a wiki, guide, or notepad.
All they need to do from a quest perspective and let you look up the last lines of dialogue NPCs said to you so you can try to continue quests. The fact the game doesn't give you that is a huge oversight.
@@AlexTaldren They literally already have markers for things you've discovered. Open your map and place them manually
Elden Ring is like how Doom Eternal was. Defied the modern gaming trends and just perfected what it did well in the past
@Hare75 The Lowly Tarnish You're absolutely correct but just like 2020 and 2021 Doom, Infinite, and Elden Ring will all be the winners for those years in the hearts of us gamers. 🙏🙏🙏

@Hare75 The Lowly Tarnish Who cares? As long as great games make money that's all that matters. The game awards are worse than the Oscars.
Both Doom Eternal and Elden Ring are somehow exactly what I want a video game to be like.
This is one of my favorite games of all time, if not my absolute favorite. I do truly think it is almost perfection. The one single mechanic I despise in this game is how long your character is knocked down after an attack from a boss.
The first time I opened that transporter chest in aghel lake is something I will never forget
Don't feel bad, 100 hours in and I just realized you can rest at the round table. 140 hours and I beat the game, thought I fought every boss and went on NPC cleanup. Found 3 new bosses during that. Finally NG2 after 160 hours. It's a BIG game with much to do. My advice for mewcomers, take your time to comb areas. You will be rewarded for your efforts

Fromsoft is one of those companies that, in my opinion, has always deserved this type of success just because of how creative they have been with this genre and essentially birthing the soulsborne genre. It brings so much joy seeing all the praise elden ring gets.
“in my opinion”
People should really stop saying this and have more confidence in what they are saying. No “ifs” and “buts”, FromSoft absolutely deserves that success. I can think if every other company a decade ago, and they’ve all stagnated since. But they’ve always made new games even knowing Dark Souls success. That IP in every other companies hands would have been milked to death and its direction would have been absolutely destroyed because every current major game companies always chase current trends to put into their game.
Look at Demon Souls remake. The graphics look really good, but they sacrificed the art direction the game had. And the UI and menus look like absolute MMO tier garbage with no aesthetic.
It’s insane to say how it’s a breath of fresh air seeing a video game company that actually wants to make a game first and foremost. The game industry really has regressed a lot.
They sold 3 times more than they expected. And that's a massive win for all of us cause it proves that games don't have to hold our hand, have top notch graphics and above all no bullshit microtransactions.

Letting me go wherever i want and do whatever i want is so freeing and doesn't make me feel like im wasting time not continuing the main quest. Beautiful game and im more than happy it got game of the year
16:02 this is the perfect choice for background music. Skyrim suffered this issue where every boss encounter or area felt more or less the same in terms of difficulty, it made exploring more tedious and less rewarding. That’s why there are so many mods on the nexus to fix it. This is one of the main reasons why I like to say elden ring is a genuine open world game. You get rewarded for exploring and there’s so much stuff to do. Hell even if you’re not trying to explore and just speedrun your way to items and gear to finish a character build. (me on my seventh playthrough.) you will still find yourself genuinely exploring on the way to your items and end up even finding new things you haven’t found before.
Thanks for illustrating that point for me
What makes Elden Ring so engaging is precisely one of its biggest criticisms: the lack of quest markers. Because the map doesn’t tell you anything, every inch of terrain has the potential to hold something special. So every step you take is net discovery. Everything feels truly uncharted and worth venturing into, with the looming threat of death at every corner.
On Ubisoft games, everything is already marked. When you already know *exactly* where you need to go, why bother with anything else? And thus their maps end up feeling like barren wastelands from the start, no matter how large and bloated they make them. They’re shallow and linear and not worth exploring.

Elden Ring is my first Souls Game and I’m genuinely having a blast. I vowed to never touch a Souls game in the past because I didn’t want to spend my hard earned money to get my ass kicked and have a terrible time. I never saw the appeal in a game that was touted to be so ungodly difficult. I saw all the hype and acclaim for Elden Ring and decided to give it a go and I am in love. Sure, it’s hard. But what I love is that it isn’t impossible. I can actually do it. The satisfaction you feel when you clap a boss that was giving you trouble is second to none. It’s a very beautiful game and the open world is doused in mystery and has me really hooked on this world’s lore and the going ons. The community aspect is also something I didn’t expect from Elden Ring. Everyone is so supportive and the knowledge that people are suffering with me, and that people have conquered the roadblocks I’m facing motivates me to do better as well. I love the collaborative strength of the Elden Ring community because I never feel alone when I’m playing. Even though the reason why I never touched souls games before was the difficulty, the satisfaction that comes from the difficulty is what truly makes this game amazing.
EDIT: I beat the game! Thank you for all your support!
souls fans always said that the difficulty of these games were hard but fair, and once you got the mechanics down it wasn't even that hard, but the difficulty was greatly exaggerated by being a meme and by people who didn't play the game. also yeah the community is great, the message of congratulations or 'i did it!' after beating a hard boss or the classic 'don't give up skeleton' they always made me feel part of a community that supports each other. I love reading comments from people new to the genre, I hope you have a good time
Truely said, brother. I barely touched a FromSoft game until now with ER. I didn't expect to be playing 100 hours of the friggin thing, yet I am. There's still moments I want to tear my hair out, but balanced out with moments of triumph, that shudder in your breath telling you succeeded against something mighty.
And, in both beauty and beastly, the game just looks goddamn gorgeous.
All it took was a new coat of paint to get your money so clearly it couldn't have been all that
Welcome to the club m8, good to have you! The past Souls games are pretty tough, but they aren’t exactly “impossible” either, try em out when you finish with Elden Ring
That's exactly why we love those games too much, they don't feel impossible, but they're hard and require you to best yourself to stand upon foe after foe. And every successful encounter makes you feel absolutely great, and every defeat makes you want to go back and do better next time, to study the movement and the timing of your enemies go overcome them. That's what I love about these games, and if you like them I'm sure you'll love them as well. Try Dark Souls one or Bloodborne. Both of them are great games from Fromsoftware.
I’m surprised. TheActMan truly hit most of the important points. This can be the easiest souls but only if you use the right equipment (this community including me is stubborn and will make the game more challenging for ourself).
Talking about how Elden Ring has DNA from the previous entry is such a beautiful statement, I would add that from Bloodborne the caves from Elden Ring with a boss at the end is a clear reference to Chalice Dungeons!
I’ve seen many reviews of the souls game, actually many reviews from back in the day praised having to a difficult and time-consuming run back to fight the boss, but I prefer ActMan’s positive take, let us respawn near the boss and we will make the decision of learning the move-set of a long fight or come back once we are overleveled.
Elden Ring can only really be easy if yeah, your overleveled or boost runes. Trying to play the normal way and progressing from level 1-10+ zones, then 10-20+ etc is actually hard asf because you can die in like 1 or 2 hits from almost anything lmao.
Dude, this video is so on the nose it’s incredible. Awesome video man; definitely worth a subscribe.
Love the Castlevania music in the background!
I absolutely love that there is no quest markers besides for objectives like the Volcano Manor quest line. I think its a good idea mostly because I am not going from quest to quest constantly. Like as much as I love games like Xenoblade Chronicles the constant quest and quest markers become a hassle. Elden Ring is more focused on the world which is why I also love BOTW.
Skyrim is like the sweet in-between. Quest markers can be disabled individually.
I do like the addition of showing where npcs are. Could never remember where all those merchants were
Same, I really got into JRPGs these past couple of years but I get exhausted by the quest fests. Especially when you can literally see the quests, so you feel you miss out if you don't see them. In Souls games, even if you miss npcs and quests it doesn't matter cause you don't even know they exist lol. Elden Ring has made an embarrassment out of the rest of """modern gaming""" by being so incredibly good while also having zero ways to extract additional money from the player. I completely agree that despite reaching crazy levels of hype, Elden Ring somehow still exceeded expectations. I also agree about the difficulty being tuned just right. The game is undoubtedly hard, but it seems like Fromsoft finally eased up on punishing the player and wasting their time. Elden Ring has virtually no padding in the form of running back to the boss but still manages to have over twice the content of any previous game. They totally could have charged $70 for the game given how much there is to do (not to mention the development time of over 4 years), but they didn't, and that's extremely admirable.
After more than 100 hours, I have no major issues with Elden Ring. The worst thing I can say about it is that sometimes it feels TOO big, overwhelmingly so, such that it's hard to commit to any one direction because there are so many branching paths. Obviously this problem will solve itself once I've finished the game and have grown familiar with all the areas. I really am over the moon with how amazing the game is and I'm very happy that Fromsoft is enjoying its incredible success.
Well said
Well said but no shit tbh. Former gen oldschool devs who have been around forever are the greatest. Nothing compares to the xbox 360 era in the modern online world plain and simple. These mainstream ps4 new gen fans and developers that AAA teams have been letting in/hiring over the years would never understand what makes a great simple game thats not some boring graphics or walking simulator that feels like an interactive movie rather than a actual game.
@@Slurpified An interactive movie can be an actual game, nice goalpost move tho.
@@Slurpified Sorry but that just isn't true. It's not the developer's fault that modern games suck, it's the fault of the corporate leadership who will do anything to maximize profits. This includes rushing games out the door unfinished, aggressive microtransactions, and cutting out pieces of the game to sell as DLC. Games with "boring" graphics and interactive movie games are what sell well. I'm not interested in them either but those games appeal to the largest possible audience and therefore make the most money.
Back in the day the only way to make money was to release a good game. With the advent of DLC and microtransactions that is no longer the case. Unfortunately the best way to make money now is to pump out mediocre games, market the shit out of them, and load them full of monetization.
Didn't they literally charge $70 though? I paid 70 digitally on Xbox.
This is also why I love monster hunter, they get so much criticism about not having hp bars. Even if they are dangerously close now. And also no easy mode.
When that announcement trailer dropped this game was all I could think about throughout the radio silence, then we finally got gameplay, then it was all I could talk about and then it finally released, and now it’s all I could play.
Elden Ring is a perfect example of "Executing it by the book."
it captured everything that made the Dark Souls games incredible, and upped it just a tiny bit with an open world mechanic instead of the linear coridors, which instantly was a hit with the fans!
and the size of this open world of course paves the way for more and powerful foes to best, and also LARGER foes as well! after all, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. *and my GOD is it satisfying to see a giant enemy fall after a long and strenious battle!*
I truly hope Elden Ring will signal to other developers and publishers that single player games can very much be profitable when done right!
They're gonna get the wrong signal and copy FromSoft again
Lol, Elden Ring has co-op and pvp. I love the game, but it's not the best example to hold up for single player games.
@@GeraltofRivia22 but it’s not a live service games
@@toshibiswas3115 you know the argument isn't single player or live service, right?
Elden Ring isn't a live service, but it has some live service elements. Just recently they released a patch that buffed and nerfed equipment, and added some npcs and extended other npc questlines.
Not going to happen. Elden Ring is extremely successful, yes, but microtransactions are still FAR more profitable while requiring far less investment and risk. EA, Activision, Ubisoft, and Take-Two make almost all of their money from microtransactions now.
Until and unless you can convince the masses to stop buying this garbage, microtransactions and live service will never go away.
I was very unsure if Elden Ring would be for me. But after actually trying to learn how to play, I'm in love.
