Leon Sex Appeal Kennedy has returned to fight ganados and chew bubblegum, and he's all out of gum. In what ways has Capcom improved on the RE4 formula? And how have they screwed parts of it up? Despite being a masterpiece of gameplay, the story is not as impressive...
I really like that leon often pulls out his guns, doing press checks, readying his weapons. Keeps you on edge as we've been conditioned that when a game does this, there's enemies nearby. Great way to add tension.
I like the change from Leon holding handguns next to his head like a super tacticool spy to the low ready position by the holster, and the developers accounting for +1 in the chamber. I never thought Resident Evil would ever have realistic firearm handling, but it's a subtle detail that makes Leon actually feel like a trained agent
The addition of Luis envisioning himself as Don Quixote adds a layer of tragedy to his character. He feels responsible for the Las Plagas infection; he wants to be the hero and save the world, because in his mind it is the only way he can make up for what he's done. And even though Saddler and Salazar were eventually defeated, Luis unfortunately never got to see that. He never knew whether Leon won.
31:55 They cut every single conversation between Krauser and Ada in the Remake because Remake Krauser isn't working for Wesker. In the original RE4, Ada and Krauser were cooperating (to a certain point) because both of them were working for Wesker to obtain the Las Plagas sample from Saddler. In the Remake, only Ada is working for Wesker; Krauser was working for Saddler from the start of the game, so it makes sense that Remake Ada and Remake Krauser never speak to each other or even encounter one another.
No, Krauser first worked for Wesker to gather evidence that Saddler's crossier could control The Plagas. Krauser had to infiltrate Los Iluminados and work for Saddler, kidnapping Ashley as part of the deal. The issue was that he had become obsessed with The Plagas and had injected himself with one. Wesker decided to send Ada in case Krauser betrayed him and to obtain a sample of The Plagas from Luis because he was slow in completing his mission. Finally, Ada killed Krauser and sent a fake sample of Las Plagas to Wesker, who obtained it from Krauser's corpse.
Evidenced by some random fact I need to confirm but seems like Krauser father also worked or was linked to the prison island (there is a gravestone marked there).
But definetely feels like plot hole that those 2 never even became suspicious or aware of one another, at least they could have added a note regarding that.
@@Robck27 While still unconfirmed there's a high chance of Krauser still working for Wesker. At least initially. 1. How does Krauser knew about Los Illuminados? Krauser is smart but he isn't as smart to know about this secret organization. It makes sense afrer Operation Javier, he was approached by Wesker to spy on Los Illuminados however when Krauser infiltrated Spain, he became part of the cult. 2. Despite Ada and Krauser not interacting at all (unfortunately) , Ada seemingly knew Krauser. And so does Wesker. When Ada calls Wesker while tailing Krauser she says "Krauser has the Amber." and not "A Man called Krauser has the Amber." . It suggests that Wesker knew who Krauser was. Why would Wesker know Krauser if he was just an American Soldier unless Krauser might have worked for Wesker between the events of Operation Javier and Resident Evil 4. 3. And another small detail is that when Ada informs Wesker about Krauser, Wesker takes a pause before saying something. That pause suggests if not confirms that Krauser was once working for Wesker but have seemingly betrayed him. 4. A small detail in the scene where Ada is trying to Snipe Krauser, as the Cutscene ends and Wesker looks at Krauser, you can see Krauser slightly tilts his head, seemingly towards Wesker. And Wesker smiles. Krauser may acknowledge that Wesker is here to take control of Amber. 5. Near the end of seperate ways, you can find a Note which states he ordered Heavy Duty Firearms to fight Leon and also "a third party he thinks he knows." . Even if he got the message hours before Leon or Ada arrived, why would he say he thinks he knows. Simple suggestion is that he was previously working for Wesker. 6. This might be getting in fanfiction territory but I don't think Krauser died after the battle. A man with Dominant strain of Plaga slained by a stab doesn't square. Maybe even after Krauser's betrayal, Wesker respected him and took him. Wesker could have easily taken Saddler's Top Plaga but he chose Krauser's. Krauser may have resisted but Wesker pacified him.
@@turell0 no he never worked for weaker in the remake. In separate ways there is even a note of Krauser preparing cause he senses some sort of third party at work which means he didn’t know of weaker.
I personally loved what they did with Chief Mendez. He has this tragic backstory being a chief that taught kids math and English; dining with different familie each night to hear their concerns and advice; befriending Luis after his grandfather asked him to kill him after he got infected, all of which ends tragically when he just becomes a pawn to saddler. The original Mendez is gone, and what we see, is just a shell of him being controlled by the plaga. It’s sad.
I agree. I don't disagree with Act Man about Salazar and Saddler (although I think they changed the whole "anti-American" shtick into Saddler being more genuine about the plagas hivemind bringing peace which I don't think was bad either) but it's interesting that he would have preferred Mendez to be the basically giant nothing he was in the original game rather than a villain with an actual backstory that informs how he acts and speaks in the game. It's not Shakespeare but it does at least give you something. Seeing all the newly added backstory for the villagers in general makes you feel even worse when you get to the credits and all the pictures of the village in better times.
@@thebadwolf3088 I think he comes across as more menacing here due to the contrast between who he was, and who he currently is. Plus, from Luis’ perspective, all these great people he grew up with are now just mindless shells. The logs you read I’m the village, and the chiefs manor, shed a lot of light on this. It’s really cool.
@@MaximumLaryngitis What I have a problem with is the inconsistency. In the original it was apparent that Mendez basically sold out his fellow villagers for power. In this one you have several documents showing how caring he was towards everyone and now suddenly he is on board with the whole thing?! Just like that? And it is stated that like in the original he has the control plaga which means he retains his free will. I'm not saying you can't do tragic villains (although it's becoming more and more cliche and I much more prefer just a great evil for evils sake bad guy) but having a guy caring about his flock and then suddenly being a-ok with this whole parasite thing is jarringly inconsistent. Maybe there has been a story behind it. Maybe Saddler really did manage to corrupt him but it's never shown and that's what pisses me off about it. Say what you will about the simplicity of the original but it worked. And it was a joy to fight him too because it felt like you were avenging the innocent villagers in some way.
Definitely. It's like they took the mechanics and features of Resident Evil 6, in this case for Leon's campaign, but implemented them in a relatively more reasonable manner.
@@Tyler-ko8dp they fixed that by making the game more difficult. It still retains the tension through other things, and it’s honestly harder than the original, while making it more smooth and fun to play.
I don't understand this as I find her far worse in this version. I never even bothered using her armor in the original but here I always do. Character wise she's better but in game she's far worse because she is always following you whereas you could have her stay in a safe spot in the og version.
Austen Thomsen, you clearly have not play the Original RE4. Ashely was never useless, just annoying. She helped a lot more in the O-RE4 than she did in RE4-R. But this is capcom's fault for taking out some of her major roles in the game such as the truck chase scene.
32:22 For the part about Ada not talking to Krauser, in the remake the story was changed for Krauser with the fact that he isnt working for Wesker anymore. He found Los Illuminados on his own on a hunt for power after Operarion Javier and isnt an inside man for Wesker
@@astonmartini6970 Your not wrong, but he was meant to be a foil for Leon in the remake. After Operation Javier Krauser saw the power of POW's and Bioweapons so he went searching for a way to obtain that power by using said bioweapons/POW's, Leon on the other hand saw the same things but instead of wanting to embrace the power he worked to find a way to fight it and trained using his own strength to overcome the odds instead of using a cheat to get stronger. Their final fight is a fight between Student and Teacher as well as a fight of Morals. One person cheated to get their strength while the other worked for it
@@hadendotexe that's a great way to put it. But Operation Javier is also different and retconned in a way where Krauser was there with his group of men over just it being Leon and Krauser there and finding Manuela. I find it more sad on the older operation javier that Krauser was injured from being imapled by Manuela's mutated mother and he felt helpless. Of course in his mind when he speaks to himself and tells leon to help him. Of course he becomes corrupted slowly after seeing how powerful manuela and javier are with the virus. The og quote of "we're merely two sides of the same coin" hits different too after playing darkside chronicles. Its just more me though, i preferred when Leon and Krauser were old squadmates and Krauser calling him Comrade over them being a student and teacher relationship. Even if it makes more sense on Leon's knife skills being good and krauser being fleshed out more (because obviously when RE4 OG came out, no one knew Krauser and darkside chronicles didnt come until 4 years later)
Yeah they genuinely don’t know one another anymore. They also changed the Operation Javier storyline now but I guess it really didn’t matter too much tbh lol
My fav Ashley interactions gameplay wise are when you return to the meeting hall in the castle, if you cross the chandeliers and activate the emblem on the opposite side for the door without hitting the first one, Ashley will run over and activate it for you. If you leap down to get the treasure without creating the ladder shortcut - which would seriously mess you up if you were alone. Ashley will also drop the ladder for you. She's just the best.
Ashely in the remake is so much better in both gameplay and character. She isn’t annoying, and a hinderance to your fun like in OG. She’s very well written, endearing, and helpful like you stated. I found myself very attached to her over the course of the game. So much so i felt something was missing when replaying the sections of RE4 remake before finding her
@@XenogearSolidis that near the end? I ran super quick and she let go off the wheel and that bad guy with the infected things inside them plummeted to their demise. That was super cool.
31:56 That's because they changed Krauser's role in the story. He's no longer working for Wesker and acting as a pawn for him, but now he reached Los Iluminados by himself after Operation Javier. Him talking to Ada would make no sense and I'm glad they decided that the story is more important than fan service because this change makes Krauser a much better character
About Ada and Leon, I think it makes sense for them to be more distant with the revised story. They both changed, people keep talking about how Leon is portrayed well to have been actually affected by the events of RE2 but no one seems to remember that,,,,, Ada was also there???????? And it makes sense that she too would be affected???????? It would make sense that meeting Leon would affect her personality, and maybe the GUILT of using Leon would make it so that she no longer feels comfortable flirting with him because it would obviously *immediately* make it seem like she is once again only trying to use him. Maybe she wants to distance herself from who she was back then? Or, it only applies to Leon, she cares about him so she doesn't want to hurt him any more than necessary.
It makes sense for Leon to change, but Ada? Not feeling guilt whatsoever is literally the core of her personality. *(SPOILERS)* In OG RE2, she flirted with a researcher solely to spy on Umbrella and didn't hesitate to point a gun at Leon the second he found out she was a spy, despite the bond they built up throughout the game. In OG RE4, you can tell Ada cares about Leon and saves him a few times, but in the end she still pointed a gun at him to retrieve the Las Plagas sample, abandoned him on the island and put him in danger by self-destructing that same island. Why? Because she had a mission to accomplish. Keep in mind that Ada was already an experienced spy in RE2 while Leon was just a rookie cop. Sure, she cares about Leon, but she doesn't let that get in the way of her mission and she feels no remorse from manipulating people to reach her ends. That's what makes her good at her job.
@@thefoolishgmodcube2644..... But that doesn't apply to the remakes....... And not even so much the original games either........ The point is that Leon is someone so pure and altruistic that it makes even Ada doubt her actions. We see this especially well in the end of RE4 remake, she offers Leon a spot in the helicopter, AND after leaving she asks Wesker what he wants with the amber and then tells the pilot to change course because she no longer wants to fulfill her job. Not to mention even in the og RE4 she literally risks her life and position by going against Krauser in order to save Leon, she actively goes against Wesker's orders to protect him, to keep Leon alive. We see just how uncomfortable she gets when Wesker tells her to kill Leon! Also I am just,,,,,,, I'm convinced her aiming her gun at Leon was pure bluff, she would not have gone through with it. If she was such a cut-throat spy she would have just killed him, not risk that he for example destroys the sample rather than hand it to her. I don't remember enough about og RE2 to say anything about that, but I'm pretty sure a lot of the nuance to her actions was lost in technological limitations with poorer sound quality and lack of facial animation. In RE2 remake tho we also see her lower her gun, she doesn't WANT to hurt Leon. And even in og I argue that her not killing Leon is already a sign of hesitation, not hesitating would be straight up killing him. Raising the gun, self preservation, seeing if Leon is going to do something. Shooting him, killing him, that's what a spy should do after their cover is blown, but she doesn't do that.
@@ShieniLicksOnLemons I'm aware she doesn't want to kill Leon. Like I said, she does care about him, but she doesn't abandon her mission over it. Krauser was different because she couldn't convince Wesker to not kill Leon, so she had no choice but to put Krauser down without Wesker's knowledge. She still completed her mission at the end despite almost jinxing it over Leon. The goal of pointing her gun at Leon wasn't to kill him but to get him to give her the sample. It was a bluff like you said. She still loves Leon, but she had a job to do. At the end of Leon A she doesn't hesitate to force Leon at gunpoint to give her the G virus sample. She did try to distance Leon from the labs so he doesn't find out about her and the sample prior to this, and she did lower her gun because she couldn't bring herself to actually shoot him. She clearly didn't want to do this, but she did it anyway, threatening Leon to get what she wants. She loves Leon, but she does manipulate or threaten him if he gets in the way of the mission. This is also proven in Leon B when she kisses and helps Leon at the very end because in that scenario Leon doesn't know about her being a spy, so there was no need to threaten him then. As for your concerns about RE2's technical limitations, the sound quality and lack of facial animations didn't get in the way of presenting Ada's character. The voice acting was enough to show what kind of character she is. When you see Ada for the first time, she sounds cold and the song that plays gives her a mysterious vibe. When she's injured, she sounds more emotional and tells Leon to leave her in order to save himself. However, when Leon has the sample and she raises her gun at him, we're back to cold and even angry Ada. Then, Ada gets shot, falls over the railing and is grabbed by Leon. Now it's back to emotional Ada. No facial animations, no 48000 hz sound quality. In OG RE4, she doesn't show signs of remorse when she forces Leon to give her the Las Plagas sample. She teases him with a "Sorry Leon" and runs off with the sample. Although this is a polar opposite of the OG RE2 gunpoint where she clearly felt bad for threatening Leon. So either she hardened since Raccoon City or it was a retcon on the writers' part. My point is that even though OG Ada clearly loves Leon, she's not above manipulating or threatening him in order to complete the mission. That's what I mean by lack of guilt. It doesn't seem so rampant in the RE4 remake, but at least there's a small hint of manipulation when she called Leon "predictable" in one cutscene. I don't know much about RE2 remake Ada since I haven't made it this far in the game yet, but seeing a video titled "Resident Evil 2 Remake - Ada Wong Betrays Leon" popping up in my recommended shows that she still has no problem stabbing Leon in the back when it's necessary.
Luiz death being called "just as good as in the original" is an insult. Luiz in og re4 is just there. He is there for the house fight and then to die 5 meters before you find Ashley with barely any impact.. In the remake they embrace the b movie flair fully and it results in Luiz death actually resonating with me. The Idea that he did not live long enough to actually make a difference from his works with umbrella having mostly regrets at the end is one of the deeper and genuine moments in the entire series.
Fr. Luis is 1000 times a better character in the remake. Leon saying “you were a fine knight don quiote.” Is super heavy and his character is pretty much improved in everyway
Yeah. Everyone has their preference and their like, but Act Man vision of Luis kinda weird. Luis in Original is so mysterious and even his pass is really foggy and unconclusive, and when Luis dies by Saddler in Original, the fact that Leon expresive to Luis death, is over dramatic to say the least, this guy just came and go and then dissapear Halfway of the gane and die instantly. While we got Luis in Remake where his character is more brazen and intresting, the fact that his background and his guilt of turning the entire Village that he knows into a Hive Mind broke him. The fact that he rejects Ada instally for Redemption by helping Aslhey and Leon too remove Plaga is such a Heroic moment, a banter we have in the mine and in the shooting range really flash the bond between Leon trauma and hatred towards Umbrella in Racoon City incidents and Luis former allegiance too Umbrella and Los Illuminados to try and repair his mistake is a great combination of characters. Even Leon respect him and thanked him after the Plaga is removed. Luis is tragic character, his vision too redeem himself is shattered, but not in vain, because of him Ashley and Leon have a second chance and Ada as cold blooded as she is, realize how dangerous Plaga is and broke any deals with Wesker.
Unless I’m mistaken Krauser only ever calls Leon rookie until the very end. To me this is him showing Leon that he no longer sees him as a lesser man and accepting that he was outmatched. He doesn’t whine about his “promised” future where he would be all powerful but instead dies with dignity, somewhat proud of Leon for beating him
This is one of the things that the remake absolutely does better. At the cost of being reserved about how they handle the bigger villains, like Salazar and Saddler and even Mendez, opting to put more of their backstory into collectables and files as opposed to being upfront (such as with the comms calls) It made room for the more important characters to leon's development, such as Ashley, Luis, and Krauser, to be awesome as hell. Krauser and Luis's deaths have actual meaning, as opposed to one being reused and one being absolutely useless respectively. It's so good.
I always was mad at Leon for being so stupid with Ada in the original. In this one he pushes her away because he feels that he cannot trust her with good reason. Instead they make the romantic tension between him and Ashley much more prevalent. I prefer this change. It feels much more realistic and makes a lot more sense. It emphasizes the classic Knight rescuing a Princess story foundation.
@@thousandyoung Exactly. It’s brilliant. Ashley is actually feminine and Leon is actually Masculine. It’s brilliant. I am doing a third playthrough using mods to make Ashley dressed like a Princess and Leon wears actual Shining armor and I replaced his knife with a sword. Using mods I increased its range so it’s like an actual sword now. I am basically doing a modded knife only run now. It’s really challenging though
Honestly I like this change too and I love this time Leon is just very nice to Ashley and serious to anybody else unlike the og but the thing is in the ogre2 which the Leon B Ada and Leon seperated very tragic which Ada sacrifice herself to save him and never use his feelings to obtain the g virus she got it from Sherry's pendant but that shit re2r ruined almost evey character and it makes much more sense to distrust ada
I like how the remake tackled Ashleys relationship with him, she's clearly developing feelings for him as the game progresses while Leon keeps it professional and politely rejects her at the end. A much better change compared to Ashley randomly trying to f*ck at the end of the game (don't blame her tho).
Well the thing is, in the remake it isn’t just the scenes being cut but parts of the story have indeed changed. Not in small ways either, in the remake Krauser doesn’t work for wesker, luis isn’t just a scientist but he also was a villager when he was younger, Ada and Leon haven’t met together since raccoon city. And possibly a lot of other changes, hopefully this explains some missing scenes.
I think it is sorta confirmed because Krauser says Los Illuminados(LI) saved him(fixed his hand) not Wesker. I guess you can say who directed him towards LI in the first place then yeah we don’t know that yet. Also operation Javier was changed so we don’t know if Krauser got to know about Wesker there like he does in the original operation Javier.
Luis is the same as the OG though. The remake just made it more clearly by actually showing his past trace living as one of the villagers. The OG was more cryptic about it. The actual change is he's a scientist working for umbrella, making the remake had more connection to the past entries compared to the OG
I’m past the honeymoon phase, and honestly I think I’m ready to call it my new favorite game of all time, surpassing Halo 2. I’ve already beaten the game twice, and it’s rare for me to play a game twice, let alone within a month, especially when it’s 10+ hours! 10/10 for me
@@TheActMan it deserves it. It’s been so long since a game just tried to be fun! Sucks you didn’t enjoy the story as much, but I’m glad you still had fun as well!
I’m really glad you enjoyed Nick Apostolides’s voice acting for Leon! It’s so wholesome to see that Nick is such a fan of the original RE4 too. Pays off great here
@@Prawnsly Exact same thing happened with me haha, I assumed they must have brought back the same voice actor, but I looked it up and was surprised to find out they're different people.
I've already commented on this before, but, the voice acting for certain characters is just better in the original. Leon, Luis, Saddler, Salazar, Ada, and Krauser, we're all good in the original. In the remake, Ashley is given better time. Both Luis's and Leon's are flips of a coin which you'd prefer. Mendez is better, Salazar is debatable, Saddler got butchered in the remake, Krauser's voice acting really dragged compared to the clean original, and Ada...yeah, we don't talk about it. But you don't mind it on new game + runs since you probably skip it anyways.
I *love* some of the story changes : 1. Luis seeing himself as Don Quiote is a pretty genius change cause , keep in mind, that's a story of a foolish (and possibly mentally ill?) old man trying to obsessively hold on to fantasies of heroism and knighthood. Meaning that Luis, although he genuinely wanted to fix his mistake, knew deep down that what he was doing was a fool's errand and that he wasn't the hero of the story. 2. Krauser having a motivation of his own, entirely separate from Wekser does give him more agency as a character. 3. The added lore bits on both Mendez and Salazar are *great* We learn that the former was a self-educated, wise village leader who brought about a small golden age by opening them to the outside world, that and his connection to Luis makes his fall that much more tragic. Him becoming a mindless puppet of the Plaga, completely devoid of the intelligence and care he used to have makes his fate damn sad Hell, even very late into his assimilation, all he could write about in his journal was the suffering the villagers were going through and how they were being sent away to be used in horrible experiments And for Salazar we learned that he was *always* mocked for his stature and while he had always been a spitefull, sadistic little shit; this *does* give us some insight on the circumstances of *how* he turned out the way he did. And throughout his boss fight, he basically projects onto Leon, insulting him with probably the same remarks that he heard people call him and/or he thinks about himself 4. Saddler is an *interesting* change though, as I have no clue if its better than the original or not. The original was a blatant villain and he was honest about it. He wanted to control the entire world mind, body and soul for his own ambitions. He was a fun villain and that was perfectly okay for the tone the original was going for. Remake Saddler though *genuinely* seems to believe that he was doing the world a favor. That the Plaga were a gift in comparison to the war, suffering and aimless cruelty of the world. Obviously, he was unhinged. But it does ask the question of where Saddler ends and the Plaga parasyte begins. Is he just another meatpuppet for the hive mind? Does *he* have control over it? Or are the two fused together on such a fundimental level that there's no difference anymore? We'll never *really* know...
Saddler’s change is honestly a great change. In the original, he was your typical mustache twirling villain of the week type. In the remake, he is a religious nutcase that is honestly unsettling and imposing. The truth is in real life, there are people like Saddler who are so consumed by their beliefs and dedication to forcing their view of morality on people which is what he wants to do as he sees himself as a savior and not the bad guy.
I kinda understand why they had the other verdugo disappear since it adds some mystery to the story that can be resolved through separate ways. I always enjoyed that game mode but the boss fights were all just reused assets with saddlers grunting being his only piece of dialogue. Hopefully the new one will be more polished with a unique verdugo/saddler fight.
Interesting enough uncovering some documents reveal that the Verdugo is also called the U3 so I would think that after Ada beats the second Verdugo it would mutate into a creature similar to the OG U3. Like the documents are from the scientist who worked for Salazar who experimented on the Housemaid and turned her into Salazar’s right hand, The Verdugo, it ended with him saying that he calls it the U3 and Salazar needs a left hand to assist him. My assumption is that he turned himself into it and the missing Verdugo will mutate into the OG U3.
That was my thing. I finished my complete playthrough of the og RE4 shortly before separate ways was announced. I chalked up most of the removed sections to being moved to Separate ways, and I was right. The sewers, the Verdugo, half the castle segments, etc.
The only reason I can think that so many of those contextual cutscenes were cut from the game was because the writers wanted the players to experience the narrative ONLY from Leon’s perspective. He wouldn’t know about Ada and Krauser working together, so we never see it. I’m not saying one version is better than another. But it makes sense why we don’t see it in this game.
@@GigaGanon2 ah, that’s right. Forgot about that. Weird we got that one but no others. Actually it’s funny you point that out because that cutscene was in the original separate ways. So why was it put in the main game when we didn’t get any other cutscenes outside of Leon’s view?
I also noticed that they actually throw more enemies in your way on Hardcore and Professional difficulty. For example, after the Salazar boss fight when you ride the elevator down there are two Armaduras waiting to surprise you in that hallway where the Merchant is and where you find the boat for the Island.
Oh yeah. On hardcore mode, when you fight the big wolf sub boss. There’s a bull head ganado with the hammer there. And 2-3 other regular ganados. That is a problem area in chapter 5. When I watched a stream on normal difficulty it was JUST the wolf!
38:23 Nick Apostolides’ favorite game was the original RE4, and he got to meet Paul Mercier to get tips if an RE4 remake ever happened He was just living his dream job, he put his whole heart out for this
My two biggest complaints were them leaving out the part where Leon shoots the bell while falling down the well and pissing Salazar off, and the melting face when the bugs spit acid you and kill you. They still do it in the remake, but it doesn't show Leon's face actually melting, which was brutal in the original.
Yeah same here with shooting the bell lmao, huge missed opportunity as well considering you CAN shoot the little speakers that he talks to you through the castle and whilst it still stops him mid-dialogue, he just laughs instead lol, was hoping he'd get all pissy.
In regards to the death scenes, it makes sense that they removed Luis killing you if you shot him, as in this gameplay it's rather easy to accidentally shoot him in the chaos of battle.
I think the main reason that all of the conversations between Krauser and Ada were not in the remake is because they kept Wesker a secret until the post credit scene, whereas in the original game Wesker was already established when Ada and Leon first met.
Regarding Leon almost stabbing Ada during their first encounter; I was under the impression that they both knew what they were doing and it was like a cheesy "dance" of sorts. I've seen the same thing happen in movies between spies who have history. They both predict the other's movements and attack patterns because they know eachother so well and I think that's what they were going for.
uh...pretty dangerous dance lol. i just got done with the original and it wasn't nearly as dangerous as that was. also it's a shame they cut out leons line during that fight ada: "put your hands where i can see them" leon: "sorry, but following a woman's lead just isn't my style" (proceeds to disarm ada)
I like that this dance, Leon's like "I'm not fucking around anymore" and probably would be okay if he's just plugging her with a K-Bar. Overall Leon's attitude to Ada looks and feels better as in the end, he denies her ride. But that said, getting in with a person who at least tried to kill you once is kinda hot.
While I do kinda miss some of the original but now cut areas, i feel that the majority of the areas that were cut were very over the top and unrealistic. So with their removal, comes a much more grounded experience which i think is probably for the best. Also with the changes to charactets and Villains, again i feel the campy feel was dropped for a more realistic rendition of their original selves. However, apart from Ada, if you read all of the files you learn more about each characters background. Luis originally coming from the village, leaving when his grandfather died, working at umbrella and coming back and eventually wanting to right his wrongs. Méndez is still threatening, however he used to be a paternal figure to the village as well as a leader, he cared for his people, he took pictures to capture every aspect of his village and it's growth, which he was so proud of, now under saddlers control he is nothing but a puppet. Same for Ramon being sick and twisted. You can learn a lot about Saddlers family from environmental storytelling on the island. And also losing face to face interactions works here, because they aren't flashbacks to Saddler, but messages he's sending out through the almost hivemind conscious of the ganados that he controls. Since Leon is infected he sees the messages that Saddler sends to his people and as the game progresses each vision/message, becomes clearer and less fuzzy as Leon becomes more infected.
I played the demo in my living room with my family around me, they don’t like violent video games but Leon’s voice and dialog made them giggle and enjoy watching me play
Honestly one of the best remakes to ever be released. It adds so much from the original and allows for loads of replay value. I'm already on my 10th playthrough. I can't wait to watch the video!
One of my favorite parts is the reason Ashley can't shoot Leon is because she's got a stovepipe. Someone on the team actually did their research for how guns can get jammed. Leon gets the gun back and clears the jam. Maybe I'm in the minority but I like Saddler's portrayal in Remake. I wish we did see more of him like you said. His model is freaky looking now and he does more than just cackle at you. His smile is weird and unnerving. I hate the "modern audiences" garbage too but the original came out in a time when anti-American/anti-Western religious terrorism was on the fore of everyone's mind. Sadder using a fictional cult to pursue his political ends (there's notes about this in the original too) fits with that period without specifically targeting Muslims or Branch Davidians or whoever.
Saddler was portrayed very well in the Remake. Just that it would have been better to introduce him to Leon at the church rather than so late in the game. The O-RE4 got it right by bringing him in and out throughout the story while the Remake only brings him in at the last location.
Not a stovepipe. The gun jammed because she is limpwristing it which caused a failure to feed. You can see in the cutscene that the slide didnt go fully forward.
@@harryvuemedia Yeah he came in so late in the game it was a little underwhelming. I always thought his introduction in the original was awkward but it came at the right time. Saddler in the remake feels shoehorned in at the end.
@@teehee3657 It did feel awkward but better to introduce Sadler earlier than later. All we have to go on by is the village talking about him and worshipping his portraits. He would have been a great villain getting more screen time throughout the series taunting Leon and Ashely. Likely when RE4 gets another remake in the next 30 years, they will fix his role,
The Resident Evil 4 remake features several smart choices that help it feel true to the original, but also shapes the adventure into something that overall feels more cohesive, modern, and thrilling than ever. It’s a stellar example of how to revitalise a classic
I think most of the cut parts were to help with pacing. Especially since a lot of people say the island is the worst part of the original and I agree that it definitely has the most sloppy pacing in the original. That being said I do miss the big car ride, lava tower room, and chaingun room. I do understand why they cut it tho
I will say that things like the lava room are just a net loss. I love RE4 remake as an experience, and Separate ways adds SO much back, but some of the areas are *just* gone, and that does suck a little bit. But much like the area with the crates you have to jump across, they likely cut it completely cause it was an area heavily reliant on quick time events.
Ok I’m going to defend some of the game elements because after all the stuff released it makes sense to look back. 1. A good portion of cut content returns in the Seperate Ways DLC, including the U-3 boss fight. 2. Krauser is not working for Wesker in this game, which is referenced in notes in the game when he believes there is a third party interference, so of course he and Ada has no interaction. 3. Leon isn’t flirting in this game with Ada because he has no trust for her, which is due to not only the events of Raccoon city but also due to his PTSD and being forced to work for the US Government. 4. Krauser’s backstory was changed due to Operation Javier no longer being a mission with only him and Leon and getting his arm injured, but instead has him losing his entire squad, which is noted when you visit his tent and see the mission report and dog tags. 5. Sadler as the main leader of this operation would NOT want to be out in the open, so of course he would send others to handle the amber retrieval. 6. The verdugo does not need to be told to go after Leon as he is also infected with Las Plaga, which is a hive mind parasite. Why would an actual order need to be given if the hive mind relays all information which is also why Sadler would not need to make an appearance.
So the thing about Krauser killing Luis in this version of the game is instead of working for wesker, Krauser now works for Saddler. Which means Saddler commanded him to take out Luis. It doesn't take away from the fact that he is a very much background villain. Just thought i'd clear up your misunderstanding during that part.
@@ISetYourFaceOnFire Hard disagree. The bingo line was delivered fine imo, the only characters who have questionable voice acting to me are Krauser and Ada (but are still tolerable). Ashley and Luis feel upgraded in their voices imo, they sound way more real. While RE4 Leon cannot be replaced, RE4R Leon's voice works perfectly for the Leon they wrote.
I didn’t think it was possible to improve upon perfection, but this remake somehow did that (beat the original a few days ago for the first time, and now playing the new one. I really do think I appreciate it a lot more because of my experience with the classic)
I'm 100 hours in. I completed 100% of the game, and I still can't stop playing It. That just tells you how good it is. Capcom not only managed to capture the essence of the original but expanded upon it in every way they needed to it.
I’d say the version of Leon we get here is a more straight follow up to his portrayal in RE2 remake. Maybe Ada, too. The way he’s a little pissed about the way she used him and her reaction to the way he regards her now.
This is definitely my game of the year, and I really loved it a lot. What I disliked were the voices that sometimes glitched, like Ashleys voice or the sellers voice. Also, textures were sometimes very bad and had to load during the cutscenes. Other than that, I loved it.
It’s great seeing how Ashley becomes more assertive/sure of her self as the game progresses. Leon’s acknowledgement of Ashley’s growth is wholesome as well.
RE4 Has that same amazing feeling that Metal Gear Rising does. They both have that fun cheese on them and all the characters have that special attitude about them.
@@dr.loomis4221 Early 2010 game character attitude, it is hard to describe, but it feels like all characters were just in there for the fun of it while trying to be super cool.
It’s so so perfect, also the first encounter with the blind guy in the castle was so much scarier and well done in the remake. The chains making noise. The gameplay had real tension it was insane
You have bad taste. Anyone who says this is a 10/10 game let alone remake is high or just extremely clouded by nostalgia or hype. I'm a die hard re fan as well love the nu re too.
Shooting while moving, turn while running, doing different melee attacks and parrying with enemies made the gameplay so much more fun and smooth. Respect for the developers🔥♥️🙏
I think the Verdugo coming after you was more tense as it made you question if it was actually gonna happen the same way this time around. And the other one obviously being saved for the Seperate Ways DLC. And Saddler showing up to kill Luis and then just leaving you in my opinion was more stupid back then. At least Krauser tries to kill you right after he just stabbed Luis. Saddler showing up even at the Church while letting you leave with Ashley made no sense in the original. Here you only see him take Ashley once and leaves you alive, but at least it happens just once. And Leon trying to stab Ada is not out of character this time around. You gotta keep in mind that this dude suffers from PTSD. In the original he was way too calm and cool for a guy who survived Racoon City. His approach to a lot of situations has changed because of that and the harsh training he was put through.
I kinda agree. Though I would like to point out even if Ada didn’t try to dodge Leon would’ve stopped. He is a highly trained basically super agent, you have any doubt he can easily fake that? If she didn’t try to dodge he definitely would’ve stopped just short of her neck. He wasn’t really trying to stab her, he was trying to catch her off guard, so he can gain the upper hand. To ask her questions. Which he does. Because in the remake he has no idea why Ada is here unlike the OG where he atleast knows she’s here for Wesker’s job.
Sadly with the addition of the parry, the verdugo fight became a joke xD you can literally just stand in front of him, parrying all his attacks (provided you have the knife durability fully upgraded) and headshotting him with the red9 (or any weapon really but i just used my pistol for it for ammo economy... i guess i should have used the magnum for time efficiency but still). It meant i just stood in the room and killed him first time just by staggering him with 3 headshots, parrying his attacks, repeat until dead. Also he gets VERY confused by doors in the remake xD But otherwise it was amazing and honestly i don't mind the parry making combat feel really easy if you time it right, because on pro mode the timing window for parries is limited to perfect parries anyway... which years of dark souls games and sekiro trained me for perfectly. I also have the knife which never breaks now so i am UNSTOPPABLE! MWAHAHAHA!!!
@@NateTheScot I found the Verdugo fight in the original to be a joke. When i did it I expected it to be harder than the remake, but I found it to be easier because you don’t need to time the cryo attacks, if he’s in the same room he will get hit every time. Ammo is also abundant in the original and I just magnumed him to death in about 2 minutes.
@@amberhernandez Tbh, as a person that hasn't played any Resident Evil games until very recently(they scared the shit out of me when I was little lol), most of his opinions on the story beats are very nostalgia-driven. Most of the changes have the precise purpose of making the remake more somber and horror-like than the OG, they are not really trying to bring 100% of the OG back. Capcom wants to make the new RE7-8 and the remakes feel as part of the same universe since the new ones have been very successful, so stuff like the dumbass traps, the video calls with the villains, comical villain scenes, shitty VA with even shittier spanish accents, over the top stuff in cutscenes and similar crap had to be cut out. For example Luis now has more personality, is written to feel more empathetic and make you feel interested and attached to his character, so having a shitty comment about a kidnapped woman's titts as his introductory line to her literally doesn't fit his new personality and it immediately alienates a part of the players.
Another cut part you didn't mention was the radio tower scene in the original RE4. Granted, I think it was optional, but it still made sense because it eventually led to Mike finding where Leon is.
For me, the remake is up there if not surpassing the original as one of my favorite games of all time (hopefully it’s not just the honeymoon phase haha). Love the darker tones they took and how fleshed out they made Leon, Luis, and above all Ashley. Made me not roll my eyes at her and an amazing partner through the game. Plus…. let’s not forget about the Regenerator’s even being more horrifying in the remake. The disturbing, alien-like music, them SPRINTING at you…. brrrr Also, hot take, but I feel like they’re setting up Ada’s more down-trodden character for Separate Ways. Didn’t mind her design here but still greatly prefer the original character
20:27 As a die hard OG RE4 fan/player, something I loved about the remake was that a lot of the stuff they cut out, are in a sense actually still in the game! When you get to the house after the farm for the first time, go around it and look to your left, you'll actually see the "gondola ride" or what ever it's called.
To be fair though that just disappointed me more because i saw it in the daytime when you first visit the farm and thought "oh cool i'll be going up there later" and then never did.
@@harryvuemedia Look i'm not going to lie, the gondola ride was really boring. There is a bunch of enemies that are basically standing still that you only have to shoot once to kill. Even on professional it offers no challenge whatsoever.
I found a little easter egg throughout the remake with Salazar. At 29:00 you mention they got rid of that which i didnt like but in the remake, in the times he does talk to you, if you can see the megaphone its coming out of, you can shoot it and he'll stop all of his dialoge and laugh. Its 100% tied to that.
I enjoy it a lot how the game doesn't take itself insanely seriously. I like how it's cheesy and it can poke fun at itself, while knowing how to slow itself down and let you feel it's horror and more serious moments. It's very good at balancing between the two to give a player a break from, "omg what the fuck was that thing", at a monster, to saying, "omg what the fuck was that thing" at one of Leon's one liners.
@@Dark_Brandon_2024 That’s either bait, or you genuinely think that the youtuber’s going to care that someone who didn’t care to watch the video, unsubbed him from the title alone. Comical.
@@slysamuel5902 To be specific, pre-unsubbed and will check it out when i have time. It is not a bait and i wasn't addressing my comment to the Act Man but to the head commenter. To be honest, he would be not the first one to silence the game's critical flaws which made me really hate this game, if the suggestive title of the video is right.
What I also appreciate and enjoyed about this game was the localization of the ganadors' speech. Some of the ganadors use "leísmo" which is a characteristic of the Spanish spoken in some parts of Spain. Normally, in Spanish we would say "lo voy a romper a pedazos" (I'll you into break up into pieces). "Lo" is to identify the direct object, while "le" is used to identity the indirect object. An example of each would be "lo quiero dar" (I want to give it) and "le quiero dar..." (I want to give him/her). As you can see, the second sentence is missing a direct object. Leísmo is essentially replacing "lo" and "la" with "le" and so it gives the feeling of you actually being in Spain a more authentic feel. So you'd hear "le voy a romper a pedazos" (I'm going to break him into pieces) throughout the game. On top of that, depending on the section, the ganadors are properly programmed to say either "te voy a romper a pedazos" or "os voy a romper a pedazos" depeding on whether Leon is alone or accompanied by someone. Basically, the first phrase refers to a singular object while the second refers to plural. Lastly, they use the conjugation of vosotros throughout the entire game unlike in the original where the localization was questionable and laughable especially if you spoke Spanish. So they would now say something like "sé que estáis ahí" (I know that you both/all are there) and it sounds great. Vosotros is the plural informal form of you (as in "you both" or "you all") I hope my explanation wasn't too confusing considering that it's 3 am and I'm tired x). Fun fact: I also speak Russian and decided to do a playthrough in Russian to see how things were localized in the game and listen to the performance of the actors. Games are rarely dubbed in Russian so it was a delight for me. The ganadors still spoke Spanish so it gave that aura of mystery instead of just outright dubbing them and ruining the immersion. I would like to play it in Japanese, too. Maybe I'll make an update here in the future.
Capcom really committed in improving the Spanish voice acting. Like there are so many variations and inflections on even the casual phrases like "detrás de ti, imbecil" or "a cubierto" (and I noticed them from getting killed a lot in my first playthrough, in Hardcore lol). Then when I finished the game and viewed the credits, I didn't anticipate there would be a long list of names for the Spanish background voices. I really appreciate they took the time to make sure everything is Castilian Spanish and not Mexican/Latinoamerican Spanish as in the OG.
I heard some people say that while the Spanish is obviously way, way better than the original, some of the accents still sound off... is that true, or is everything pretty much spot-on? Just curious.
@@jackkendall6420 In my experience having worked with Spaniards or having them as classmates, the accents are fine and I'd even say authentic. The contour in their speech definitely reflects that of a Spaniard, or someone who sounds like they're from Spain. I'll say this: there are linguistic variations in Spain. So someone from Andalucía (region in the Southern Spain) sounds different than from someone from Barcelona (Northern Spain). Think someone from East Coast and West coast in the U.S. with inflections, pronunciation of words, etc. That's basically what I'm referring to. Maybe some people have only been exposed to a certain region and that's why they say that the speech sounds off? I hope that enlightened a bit. =)
@@AlanJonesu No, that was a great response! Thank you! It possibly being a regional thing definitely makes sense. Though I don't think I'll hold it against Capcom for getting it wrong at that level, ha.
I personally liked the first conversation between Leon and Luis more in the remake than in the original. In the original the conversation felt incredibly static, they were both sort of sitting there and it felt like Leon had zero agency to try and escape and was instead more interested in conversing with this random local. Yes there's the suspension building shot of the Ganado approaching the building which is an excellent use of the old "Bomb Under The Table" trick but the movement shown in the remake elevates it a lot for me. The way Leon immediately goes to escape and doesn't really care about what Luis has to say until he mentions Ashley shows how dedicated Leon is to his mission and the sudden tug to pull Luis face-to-face was an amazingly choreographed scene.
The cutscene in 31:20, its definitely not better in OG, for one i'm pretty sure the Ganado that appear suddenly is just a guard keeping watch outside the door and heard all the commotion happening, went to look, see they're trying to escape and attacked them. Meanwhile in the OG, why was this random axe man coming towards them with the sole purpose of killing them RIGHT AFTER they injected Leon with the Plaga? It doesn't make sense, like the devs put Leon and Luis in this situation and didn't how to get them out so they make this random Ganado go to them to kill them just so he can set them free. At least in the Remake Leon and Luis were actively trying to escape and that's what cause the ganado to appear.
I don't know if it's just me, but I like the character clothing changes for Ada. I remember playing OG RE4 and loving her dress, but her current attire still gives off a fem fatale vibe while also seeming much more practical in a combat situation compared to the dress. Beyond that, your review encapsulates everything else perfectly I feel, I do find it to be my favorite RE game atm.
@@PhantomMiria22 I wouldn't even say that, I watched bricky's review and he made a fairly good point about the VA. Not exact quotes, but he mentioned that usually if something seems off in that department, it's not always the actress/actors fault, could also be script and direction. She delivered some good lines here and there, and probably because they didn't do enough takes or used the wrong ones instead of better delivery it makes it appear flat. That's just how I see it though, I think she did her job well but I'll admit it doesn't exactly fit the character.
@@Laz_Lu Nah her VA isn't actually a professional Voice Actor and it shows. She is an actor not a voice actor, very different. Like they already have the perfect Ada with the VA from RE2 Remake but capcom being capcom, they have history of not recasting unionized VA so they go with an actor instead.
@@PhantomMiria22 definitely a script issue cause I think her voice sounds fine, like its tone and pitch and whatnot, but she had no riveting lines, nothing to really support her decisions in the game. In fact, while playing, I thought they'd have a chapter where Ada has some sort of interaction with Ashley in place of leon to show that she 1. Isnt just a mercenary without morals and 2. actually has a romantic affection towards leon and as a result would kind of, second handedly support his endeavors. idk maybe the seperate ways dlc will provide this sort of character development.
@@joeyramirez6422 Though some line came out fine, it's the tone and pitch that ruin it for me. Especially the boat ride between her and Leon, she sounds as if she loath leon
i absolutely loved the remake. One thing i was surprised about was the sound design of the weapons. Some iconic weapon sounds like the reloading of the bolt action rifle was missing but the meaty sound of all the weapons were really cool. Also rip Red 9 Reload Animation
I think you mean RIP Broken Butterfly reload animation. The Red 9 is mostly the same due to a clip being used still. The bolt action rifle reload animation is different as well.
That first encounter with Iron-Maiden, 10/10. Because in the old game the IM was a complete separate monster from regenerators. It caught me completely off guard.
I loved the banter between Leon and Ashley as you’re moving throughout the game. It really feels like they care about each other and are trying their best to work as team considering the crazy circumstances.
This remake is like when people used to tell oral stories before writing existed. It’s broadly the same, but there are tiny details that are new or changed. A slightly different masterpiece is still a masterpiece.
It's so funny that you said the changes felt out of place, where I felt like in the original ... they were out of place. Like Leon meets Saddler twice before the island, and has the chance to unload on him, but doesn't because the plot doesn't want you to do that just yet. Also, the villains don't facetime Leon, instead Ada and Luis do, which makes more sense. The relationship between Leon and Ada is much more grounded in reality, like he doesn't indulge her sexual advances even though she gives it a go because he doesn't trust her AT ALL after RE2, which like you said only came out 4 years ago so why would he totally forget all of that and how completely bamboozled he was. Also, he actually asks if she's changed after seeing Luis die and feeling bad that he may have really gone hard on Ada because yes, people do change. I mean, I love the OG but it makes no damn sense a lot of times. Saddler has all of these goons working for him like Mendez and Salazar and yet goes to run errands by himself, I see that he thinks he's not a boss but a leader... strange for a guy running literally a hive mind. Luis lies about being a cop to Leon just to get Leon to trust him, yeek! Luis dies so freaking fast we have no idea why Leon is screaming his lungs out after Luis dies... like I laugh at it NGL. Also, he just lets Saddler walk away again even though the plaga is still in early stage, and he could have resisted. In the remake, Ada doesn't know why exactly she's doing what she's doing, like she knows she shouldn't be literally putting Leon first and her mission second but hey that Leonussy got her acting unwise, and the worst part is... he doesn't even trust her. She has no history with Krauser because Krauser here doesn't work with Wesker, he betrayed his home country after having a crisis of faith seeing his men die in South America during Operation Javier. Krauser's story is with Leon, no reason for him to know Ada or interact with her. Luis stole the sample to give it to Ada in exchange for protection, Krauser tracked Luis and killed him for Saddler, his new "master" whose cause he's voluntarily joined to get revenge on the country that abandoned him and got his men killed. I mean, this story makes a lot more sense, and takes itself seriously, without losing the goofy charm or the hyper "manly" quality. Like I've said before, it's Michael Bay's "the rock". There's no jab taken at the U.S. and the U.S. government because it's 2020s, not Y2K, and we're not scrambling to find a justification for invading Iraq or to laugh at the U.S.'s "incompetence and overconfidence"... It was over 20 years ago. Leon is not in the least bit douchy in the remake, and I get why. But hey, the OG is gold, I admit to that. It is a product of its time though. You rock a blonde wig better than I do good sir, kudos to that.
The Verdugo that leon fights in the remake is the one leon shoots at when he watches Ashley get kidnapped from the balcony. The Verdugo looks back at leon before walking away, so my guess is that it held a grudge for even attempting to fight back and later came back for the boss fight.
The exploit of the door thing was in RE village too. And actually it was not only a door but imaginary line on open area almost. Enemies just stopped and turned around and walked away. Killed so much of them like that. :D
Act Man was so happy and got the last laugh when QuantumTV got arrested, that he graced us with another awesome review of one of the best remakes of one of the best games of all time
Thing is, we might not be out of the woods yet. I fear that we’re about to get successors and the likely candidates are Synthetic Man, Quartering, and Average One Gaming. It’s like the post credit of Quantumania but the stadium is full of people who think like Quantum.
the best thing about the act man videos is that he genuinely feels like your buddy who is as excited about the game as you are. a true and honest gamer, not just a journalist.
This review was solid. However, Krauser in the remake is actually working directly working under Saddler, NOT Wesker. So Krauser would realistically not know Ada since he's not working with them. Also Leon has absolutely no reason to be romantic with Ada considering the events of the re2 remake. They just switched up Leon and Ada from being romantic to being close people from unusual circumstances.
I believe the AI treating doors as thresholds is intentional. It was also the case in RE2Make, because in RE2 original each door was a loading screen so the AI wasn't supposed to be able to follow you through them. There are still specific doors that can be busted through by zombies, but most of them are barriers that keep them away. It's gamey but the RE team has never shied away from sacrificing immersion for the sake of making sure the gameplay is not frustrating.
11:25 I totally agree with that incredible music. Though as a former trumpet player, when I hear the bonus theme kick in in the shooting range, I'm too busy cringing and feeling like my lungs will explode just listening to that trumpet going wild. It would take more training than you'd think to pull that off. And even more air. The answer is always *air* in brass.
I have to say, the ambient background noise and the faithfulness to a lot of the great stuff from the original really gives this game a lot of soul! I daresay one would have to go out of their way to nitpick or, heaven forbid, *doctor* footage of this game to show anything otherwise!
I mean I like the original over the remake too, but if you're fooled by obvious doctoring and bad faith editing that's debunked by just, y'know, going to those places in the game and comparing them to the video, could I interest you in some oceanside property in Nevada? I'll cut you a great deal.
Love how it stay true to the original as Capcom mentioned. It still is the campy action flick but this remake brought the "horror" in the survival horror genre with it's atmosphere
I think it’s pretty obvious that CAPCOM put literally all its focus into gameplay design, and that any changes made to the story were specifically made to fit the gameplay and atmosphere. While I am sad that a lot of content was cut, with how different and serious the remake’s atmosphere is I just don’t think it was possible for CAPCOP to keep those scenes in without completely obliterating the players immersion from orbit.
I disagree with your point about the “flashbacks”, I felt as if they gave saddler a feeling as if he’s always watching you, that combined with his more ominous appearance made him much more threatening to me. 31:40 you literally see the trail the guy could have taken considering the exit is guarded by multiple Ganados. (If you play the game)
The flashbacks work in the original too they were just complimented with cutscenes of them in-person and in front of Leon, you know? I feel like the balance worked better in the OG
@@TheActMan The first scene in the church with Saddler after finding Ashley is not a flashback, it happens in real time. Both Ashley and Leon hear Saddler give orders because they have the parasite in them. This establishes that people with the parasite are mind controlled by Saddler and that Leon and Ashley could suffer the same fate soon.
I really like the changes to Ada, personally. She feels more like someone who's trapped in a bad relationship and is being forced to do things she disagrees with, but at this point she's so embedded in that life that she sees absolutely no way out of it. It may not be as entertaining on a surface level, but I think there's some added depth to her performance that makes you feel for her. She acts "robotic" because she has to be in order to hide her regret (which you DO hear in her voice). Definitely agreed that the backlash against her voice actress is infuriating. I don't know why people insist on being so awful.
Honestly it sounds to me like her audio is being recorded by a 10 year old mic. It’s unfortunate that it seems like the audio team either ran out of time with the va or just said “good enough” and move on
I feel with some of the changes they made, it tried to put you in Leon’s shoes a lot more, like Leon wouldn’t know that Salazar sent Verdugo 1 after him because he’s absent from that little dialect and that’s why Verdugo 1 comes seemingly out of nowhere and the same can be said for the hook with Del Lago and the Villager with Luis. I agree with the cut content stuff because if you ask me the more cut content in the game = more game which I’d prefer, especially because Verdugo 2 disappears
Also the game not telling you beforehand that Verdugo comes for you makes the encounter more surprising. They are just different setups, both work well.
With all due respect, I can see and hear the complex dynamics of Ada. And it’s understandable that Leon would not immediately trust her after finding out she’s a merc and a liar. He does know she tries to help but is also wary of her. Also Luis, Leon, and Raccoon City all had a major impact on her. Also, Luis not being a straight perv right off the back endears people to him more.
Engaging combat -> treasure collection -> better guns -> Engaging combat ->... This gameplay loop repeats itself troughout the whole game, only being briefly stopped to do the ocasional puzzle (helping keep the loop fresh) These are my two cents at least
23:27 Here's what's up with villains Chief Mendez (big cheese): he was once a passionate leader and chief of the village area who saw the villagers getting diagnosed with something referred to as madness, then he let zealots of Saddler inject them with some he thought is the cure so they became one with the las plagas. Now he will do anything do anything his lord wants and he will do it himself, saddler wants leon on his side so chief injects leon with the srynge that contained the plaga then he interrupts leon in his own house and tries to chase leon and Ashley and capture her by himself and of course tries to kill in the boss fight when becomes to big of a nusense and doesn't use digital intercoms because he's a villager Ramon Salazar: Unlike Mendez It's in Salazar's nature to send someone to do his biding because one: he's insecure little bitch and two: he is only interested in to be in Saddler's favor and he simply doesn't want to deal with leon so he tries bribing leon into taking Ashley away and he tries to do it by force he tries killing him throwing down to a pit sends a Verdugo after him meanwhile violating Ashley by accelerating the process of mutation and fights leon head on and doesn't use an intercom anymore because he is too traditional Osman Saddler: his ultimate goal is to send an infected Ashley into America so he can "share the gift" with the rest of the world, which was the ultimate goal of his ancestors. The reason he stays behind is because he has the highest ranking plaga and can control the ganados, the zealots, and the soldiers, so thought out the game, he takes command of everyone to kill you and kidnap Ashley and show how powerful he is through mind controlling both leon and Ashley and through a hive mind system (which you referred to as flashbacks) he always keeps his cool and tries to convince leon plaga is the way to go and talks good of his religion until in the end when he gets angry and let plaga take control of him mutate him in the final boss And he doesn't use intercom because he doesn't need one So yeah, they clearly took some actions regarding their task at hand
I feel like he let nostalgia shroud his judgment on these villains. "Prescence" isn't having them be there in person even if it's stupid. It's feeling like they are there doing all these horrible things even if they aren't physically there. That's the point of the microphones, notes, and Hallucinations. It's there to show you that they have that very presence.
This remake is the first video game I’ve played in the 25 years I’ve been playing video games where I actually felt the experience was up to par with a classic novel or epic film like the LotR trilogy. I consider it one of the greatest video games ever made.
14:46 Took the words right outta my mouth, man! It's crazy how the game that popularized QTEs in the first place is still TO THIS DAY the one that did them the best.
I would say another good thing to consider making this an amazing remake is that it doesn't try to replace the original. It exists along side it like two twins wearing the same clothes yet have different personalities but both are still fun and great people to hang around.
The thing about Ashley is her AI is kinda weird because sometimes when you're fight she run into the crowd and she runs infront of wherever your aiming sometimes
really well done video! nice touch to have leon himself reviewing his game! Since i played the first game multiple times i feel like i get some of the problems you have but there are things i disagree, like the radio calls i think it makes sense they dont make an appearence, they showed presence sure but didnt really make sense in my view for them to call leon and keep telling their plans. Another thing is saddler, i think its more menacing and/or mysterious, you see him because of your connection with this terrible parasite, the villains and common enemies mention him, ask for help from him, so he feels like that big bad boss of all thats trying to stop and kill you. There are some other things i disagree, like the slow motion cutscenes i honestly think its better without it, but opinions are opinions, and this is just a nice video to watch and listen to made by a fan, gotta respect that.
Remake's ending clears up a confusion many people had with the original involving Ada and her "employer" so here's hoping that Ada Wong's DLC gets jammed pack with content (hope it's Assignment Ada Wong + Separate Ways + more) and a better performance from Lily Gao (Ada Wong's new VA, same actress from Welcome to Raccoon City's 2 minute post credit scene).
RE4R was the first Resident Evil game I played and now I’ve played RE7, RE8, RE2R, RE3R, and RE5. I can’t believe I’ve been holding out on this franchise for so long. I seriously can’t find a single flaw with RE4R. It’s one of my favorite games of all time.
RE4 (2005) is one of my favorite games of all time, I was a child when it came out, and I've replayed it countless times throughout the years as I grew up... So I think I have some weight when I say RE4 is a near flawless remake that demonstrates how 'modernising' a game *should* be done. I played the remake non-stop until I 100% all the challenges. Was worth every minute. The developers have pulled off what we thought was impossible.

@The Meme Who Cried Boi yeah, it's a legit strategy now to leave one in the chamber now for a faster reload. They did a good job with this remake.
really wish he wouldn't holster the gun on his own, adds more time having to unholster then aim and often gets me hit
@@Copperscaled Probably because he's more of a melee build. Parry first shoot later lol

Its very cool that Luis and Leon fight two giants just like Don Quixote
Nah dont worry, he was cheering on Leon from Heaven.
That is already implied in the original no?

@@Robck27
While still unconfirmed there's a high chance of Krauser still working for Wesker.
@@MaximumLaryngitis he was more menacing in the original, specially with the severe consequences speech
Wait theres lore in this game?
The ability to move around and shoot while parrying really makes Leon feel like so much more of a badass
Definitely. It's like they took the mechanics and features of Resident Evil 6, in this case for Leon's campaign, but implemented them in a relatively more reasonable manner.
it makes it less intense IMO, in turn being easier for the player.
It really makes you feel like Leon Kennedy
@@Tyler-ko8dp they fixed that by making the game more difficult. It still retains the tension through other things, and it’s honestly harder than the original, while making it more smooth and fun to play.

I like the twinge of jealousy from Ashley when Leon tells her that Ada isn't the kind of girl to "roll over that easy".
32:22 For the part about Ada not talking to Krauser, in the remake the story was changed for Krauser with the fact that he isnt working for Wesker anymore. He found Los Illuminados on his own on a hunt for power after Operarion Javier and isnt an inside man for Wesker
That almost just makes Krauser more one dimensional only looking for power instead of a double crosser for Wesker
One person cheated to get their strength while the other worked for it
@@hadendotexe "BOW" not "POW"
Iron Maiden and the bridge, I thank her for that one too.
I didn't even know about the ladder one ! I always ran and did it myself just in case 😅
Ashely in the remake is so much better in both gameplay and character. She isn’t annoying, and a hinderance to your fun like in OG. She’s very well written, endearing, and helpful like you stated. That's because they changed Krauser's role in the story. He's no longer working for Wesker and acting as a pawn for him, but now he reached Los Iluminados by himself after Operation Javier. Him talking to Ada would make no sense and I'm glad they decided that the story is more important than fan service because this change makes Krauser a much better character

Yeah, I think Act Man assumed the plot was the same with minor differences, despite their being genuinely major ones throughout the story
Yeah their relationship in this game feels way more real.
This is a lot of "maybe's" I'm seeing.
Original Ada and Leon was better.
Dude just riding on nostalgia with re4, when he can not admit even that that Luis is better in remake like other things in remake sre better
@@gregrenox9644 well he did said that it was because nostalgia moment.
The one time I had to absolutely and utterly disagree with Actman. He can't disrespect my boy Luis like that
Unless I’m mistaken Krauser only ever calls Leon rookie until the very end.
At the cost of being reserved about how they handle the bigger villains, like Salazar and Saddler and even Mendez, opting to put more of their backstory into collectables and files as opposed to being upfront (such as with the comms calls)
It made room for the more important characters to leon's development, such as Ashley, Luis, and Krauser, to be awesome as hell.
Isn't that what all Progressive Media hate these Days? XD
@@thousandyoung Exactly. It’s brilliant. Ashley is actually feminine and Leon is actually Masculine. It’s brilliant. I like how the remake tackled Ashleys relationship with him, she's clearly developing feelings for him as the game progresses while Leon keeps it professional and politely rejects her at the end.
Krauser isn’t fully confirmed not to work for Wesker in this game. We should wait for separate ways to know for sure.
@@andrewrogers3067 I know, but I feel like it's more likely. Due to how little interaction if any between krauser and ada. Only time will tell
@@Prawnsly Exact same thing happened with me haha, I assumed they must have brought back the same voice actor, but I looked it up and was surprised to find out they're different people.
@Huwhite Death nah you just have no idea what good voice acting is
I've already commented on this before, but, the voice acting for certain characters is just better in the original.
I *love* some of the story changes :
3. The added lore bits on both Mendez and Salazar are *great*
We learn that the former was a self-educated, wise village leader who brought about a small golden age by opening them to the outside world, that and his connection to Luis makes his fall that much more tragic. Him becoming a mindless puppet of the Plaga, completely devoid of the intelligence and care he used to have makes his fate damn sad
Hell, even very late into his assimilation, all he could write about in his journal was the suffering the villagers were going through and how they were being sent away to be used in horrible experiments
And for Salazar we learned that he was *always* mocked for his stature and while he had always been a spitefull, sadistic little shit; this *does* give us some insight on the circumstances of *how* he turned out the way he did.
And throughout his boss fight, he basically projects onto Leon, insulting him with probably the same remarks that he heard people call him and/or he thinks about himself
@@J1R629 Tbh, i think it makes him really less memorable since the religious nutcase is already a far more cliche type of villain.
I think they’re going to replace the Krauser fight with the Verdugo
Interesting enough uncovering some documents reveal that the Verdugo is also called the U3 so I would think that after Ada beats the second Verdugo it would mutate into a creature similar to the OG U3. Like the documents are from the scientist who worked for Salazar who experimented on the Housemaid and turned her into Salazar’s right hand, The Verdugo, it ended with him saying that he calls it the U3 and Salazar needs a left hand to assist him. My assumption is that he turned himself into it and the missing Verdugo will mutate into the OG U3.
Yup, they certainly answered that question about the other "Verdugo's" disappearance in Separate Ways.
@@TheMasterUnity yk you're not entirely wrong.
That was my thing. I finished my complete playthrough of the og RE4 shortly before separate ways was announced.
I chalked up most of the removed sections to being moved to Separate ways, and I was right. The sewers, the Verdugo, half the castle segments, etc.
I love what they did with Louis' character, giving him a more active role. The Don Quixote reference as his send-off was the chef's kiss
Was so good.
Remake has a scene with just Luis and Ada together. No Leon perspective there.
I always thought the reason for the cut content is to help the pacing (since the story is more serious now)
@@GigaGanon2I feel like separate ways is going to give us the contextual scenes. Sucks you gotta pay for it to get more story though
@@GigaGanon2 ah, that’s right. Forgot about that. Weird we got that one but no others.
Actually it’s funny you point that out because that cutscene was in the original separate ways. So why was it put in the main game when we didn’t get any other cutscenes outside of Leon’s view?
@@viniciusgoulart5077 That could be part of it too.
38:23 Nick Apostolides’ favorite game was the original RE4, and he got to meet Paul Mercier to get tips if an RE4 remake ever happened
He was just living his dream job, he put his whole heart out for this
My two biggest complaints were them leaving out the part where Leon shoots the bell while falling down the well and pissing Salazar off, and the melting face when the bugs spit acid you and kill you.
@@licensetoshredlol, i always shot it every time i found it and hoped he would get pissed
I miss the minethrower and two-routes after the cabin.
Also they'll probably be in the Ada dlc.
@lefteron6804 my guess is either the dlc or RE5 remake...if Capcom is planning for that.
No, the reason is that krauser has nothing to do with wesker in the remake
@@ShikiRyougi05 Also that.
Wesker literally has a call with ada halfway through the game lmao
Regarding Leon almost stabbing Ada during their first encounter; I was under the impression that they both knew what they were doing and it was like a cheesy "dance" of sorts. I've seen the same thing happen in movies between spies who have history. They both predict the other's movements and attack patterns because they know eachother so well and I think that's what they were going for.
uh...pretty dangerous dance lol. i just got done with the original and it wasn't nearly as dangerous as that was. also it's a shame they cut out leons line during that fight
ada: "put your hands where i can see them"
leon: "sorry, but following a woman's lead just isn't my style" (proceeds to disarm ada)
Yeah the encounter in the first game is a lot better. They don't have a dance. They have a check & mate
Yeah but...they don't know each other well.
I think you're reading in too much
I like that this dance, Leon's like "I'm not fucking around anymore" and probably would be okay if he's just plugging her with a K-Bar.

That's fair but that wouldn't be necessary if they changed his relationship with Wesker
Luis is one of the best parts about the remake. They were able to me him even more likeable, making his death even more painful.
X,w
I hated his VA though that may be more of a familiarity thing and a small price to pay.
@@hustler666100 The voice acting across the board for the remake was absolute downgrade. The bingo line was a clear indication of this.
@@hustler666100Meh

Some of these made me pause and actually think, so kudos. It's hard to break through the rose tint, especially when it comes to RE4.
True, but then again I think Mike mentions Hunnigan requesting it to evac Leon and Ashley this time around
@@ReizokoRyu But how did Hunnigan know about Leon's exact location in the island? Their transmission got cut off way back in the castle section.

The disturbing, alien-like music, them SPRINTING at you…. brrrr
Also, hot take, but I feel like they’re setting up Ada’s more down-trodden character for Separate Ways.
@@NateTheScot I wouldn’t be surprised if you use it in separate ways
heck no! The Gondola ride was fun to do. Capcom likely took it out because it was too much work for them.

Darn. I didn't expect any likes. Had I the skills for video editing, I would've recorded all of my examples in order to illustrate them properly.
Ada visually is fine. Her VA just fell flat as hell.

Never played the original or any RE game before RE4 remake. The game is incredible.
You rock a blonde wig better than I do good sir, kudos to that.
i couldn't agree more

Thanks guys, you're the best! 😊
Definitely agree all these things missing make the game better in my opinion
The Verdugo that leon fights in the remake is the one leon shoots at when he watches Ashley get kidnapped from the balcony. The Verdugo looks back at leon before walking away, so my guess is that it held a grudge for even attempting to fight back and later came back for the boss fight.
What happened to the other Verdugo?
@@nota13xxsweaponsupplier7 Seperate ways DLC probably. Called U3. Which Ada will fight most likely if it happens
@@nota13xxsweaponsupplier7 The Pesanta/U3? Assumed it will be saved for a potential DLC for Ada.
@@Lady_Cinder damn there’s an ada dlc coming? What other dlc’s are coming?
@@nota13xxsweaponsupplier7 probably more mercenaries, and maybe a playable Luis story
Would you say they are as bad as him now? I don't really watch their content however iam familiar with their reputations
@@lukestephenson2324 They’re just as bad as him. Quantum may have opened a dangerous precedent for these kinds of RUclipsrs.
@fulcrum6760 what type of stuff have they done. Sorry I know this might be an odd question but iam not very familiar with them.
the best thing about the act man videos is that he genuinely feels like your buddy who is as excited about the game as you are. a true and honest gamer, not just a journalist.
21:04 Not all but quite a few of the sections you're referring to were in the dlc.
They cut the radio, funny one of the best things you can do with your villains is to give them a radio so they can taunt you whenever they want.
Been waiting for this Act Man! Your analysis and opinions were always spot on! Keep these videos steady and coming!
Thank you, kind sir! I hope you enjoy it
2:25 , best meme in RE. The Redfield bloodline MUST be continued.

I totally agree with that incredible music. Though as a former trumpet player, when I hear the bonus theme kick in in the shooting range, I'm too busy cringing and feeling like my lungs will explode just listening to that trumpet going wild. It would take more training than you'd think to pull that off. And even more air. The answer is always *air* in brass.
No way did my man just ref the Redfield Lineage memes.
I have to say, the ambient background noise and the faithfulness to a lot of the great stuff from the original really gives this game a lot of soul! I daresay one would have to go out of their way to nitpick or, heaven forbid, *doctor* footage of this game to show anything otherwise!
@Rick Ross that was anythint but “fair side by side” comparison u fanboy
@Rick Ross "fair"
@@TheActMan fair enough, I just feel as if they made saddler much more threatening (not a better character)
@@OGP2293 I know, that’s why I said “flashbacks”
You adding “no thanks, bro” after Ashley wanted to shagg has give you an instant subscriber! I was hoping that was added in 😅
I really like the changes to Ada, personally.
It’s unfortunate that it seems like the audio team either ran out of time with the va or just said “good enough” and move on
The DLC is out and it's amazing btw
"the more cut content in the game = more game"
Uh... that's not how that works.
That's not how any of that works ever.
@@cuttrogue agreed
@@NateTheScot well yeah it does, if there’s more of the cut content that got cut gets added to the game, it means there’s more of a game to play
The replayability of this game is insane. I dunno what's so addicting about it.
Engaging combat -> treasure collection -> better guns -> Engaging combat ->...
This gameplay loop repeats itself troughout the whole game, only being briefly stopped to do the ocasional puzzle (helping keep the loop fresh)
These are my two cents at least

Here's what's up with villains
Chief Mendez (big cheese): he was once a passionate leader and chief of the village area who saw the villagers getting diagnosed with something referred to as madness, then he let zealots of Saddler inject them with some he thought is the cure so they became one with the las plagas. Now he will do anything do anything his lord wants and he will do it himself, saddler wants leon on his side so chief injects leon with the srynge that contained the plaga then he interrupts leon in his own house and tries to chase leon and Ashley and capture her by himself and of course tries to kill in the boss fight when becomes to big of a nusense and doesn't use digital intercoms because he's a villager
Ramon Salazar: Unlike Mendez It's in Salazar's nature to send someone to do his biding because one: he's insecure little bitch and two: he is only interested in to be in Saddler's favor and he simply doesn't want to deal with leon so he tries bribing leon into taking Ashley away and he tries to do it by force he tries killing him throwing down to a pit sends a Verdugo after him meanwhile violating Ashley by accelerating the process of mutation and fights leon head on and doesn't use an intercom anymore because he is too traditional
Osman Saddler: his ultimate goal is to send an infected Ashley into America so he can "share the gift" with the rest of the world, which was the ultimate goal of his ancestors. The reason he stays behind is because he has the highest ranking plaga and can control the ganados, the zealots, and the soldiers, so thought out the game, he takes command of everyone to kill you and kidnap Ashley and show how powerful he is through mind controlling both leon and Ashley and through a hive mind system (which you referred to as flashbacks) he always keeps his cool and tries to convince leon plaga is the way to go and talks good of his religion until in the end when he gets angry and let plaga take control of him mutate him in the final boss
And he doesn't use intercom because he doesn't need one
So yeah, they clearly took some actions regarding their task at hand
I feel like he let nostalgia shroud his judgment on these villains. "Prescence" isn't having them be there in person even if it's stupid. It's feeling like they are there doing all these horrible things even if they aren't physically there. That's the point of the microphones, notes, and Hallucinations. It's there to show you that they have that very presence.
What’s interesting is that some of the stuff you mentioned that got cut was added back for Ada’s Separate Ways DLC
Well... The Yakuza series in my opinion is the one with the best QTEs
NOO,RE4 og messed up QTEs on Pro diff
The fact they managed to make both the original, and the remake this amazing is unreal
I would say another good thing to consider making this an amazing remake is that it doesn't try to replace the original. It exists along side it like two twins wearing the same clothes yet have different personalities but both are still fun and great people to hang around.
And that's why you can enjoy both easily
Not the original RE4?
@@thebadwolf3088 no, I haven’t played it yet but I will eventually
Go play better games. Manhunt 2 is more scarier than any Resident Evil.
Saddler's scene weren't flashbacks. They're telephatic visions. It's like saddler wants leon to see what he sees.
Salazars voice acting during his boss fight is truly PHENOMENAL
Edit: Guts ♥️
If you play the game in Japanese, i swear Salazar sounds like Brook from One Piece
