Thank you so much for uplaoding this! Hope this blows up and people can truly appreciate how much better Rodney was than his competition at this age, maybe you need to upload second place so people can see the difference haha.
@Svedo Per Welinder got 2nd place at this contest. And he had beaten Rodney in one contest a couple of years earlier. There were a lot of very accomplished freestyle skaters in that era. Just because Rodney won the most contests doesn't mean that there weren't other amazing skaters. You can see some of Per Welinder's run at about 17 min in this video: ruclips.net/video/Yfyqt8PxiWU/видео.html
@@80sFreestyle Thanks for the reply. I certainly didn't mean to sound disrespectful to other skaters. I watchedr Per in that short clip and it was very impressive, I was a little surprised. Though there's still a clear difference, even just in how clean/polished the tricks were, also how old was Rodney when he lost to Per? I imagine quite young.
I think most will fail to realize how difficult it was to do that routine on board with no concave, and tiny tail. Forget that though, Rodney was one of the few guys who started skating. Long live the king, and our blond bangs!
It happens so fast and the quality is so bad that it's hard for me to tell, but did he do a rolling handstand "heelflip", as opposed to the usual kickflip direction, which would've obviously been more sensible.

who's here after tony hawks talking about it on "Hawk vs Wolf Clips"?
This is the most colorful real life video ive ever seen. The 80s seems so awesome
Best skateboarder who ever lived!
I thought this was a demo until I heard the judge call out how much time he had left🤣 i cant imagine competing against him😮
I see Rodney performing during these early years. He was like Michael Jordan at the time for us Skaters! ❤
The energy there is magnetic!!! What a time to be alive!
Nobody could replicate that.

@@Blankp1anet Welinder beat Mullen for first place in 1983. So Rodney would have been around 17.
Imagine having to go next 😂

@@chaosultimamage Yes. Rodney did handstand fingerflips instead of regular handstand kickflips in this era.
@@80sFreestyle the GOAT
Yep. To this day, with all the current freestyle still happening I’ve never seen anyone else do handstand fingerflips. Only handstand kickflips

@@80sFreestyle it’s been a long time since I saw those clips. I’m not gonna be too hard on myself. Kudos to the rad and muscular Keith Renna!
Say less.
The the dude was.
Always on.
Thank your shirts. You got to witness it
Rodney Mullen is the goat
The best.
It’s crazy to see the younger generation think this is a new thing….. Rodney MULLEN!! Who he does mention ….. this style isn’t new.
WOW!
People knowing who Tony Hawk is but not Rodney Mullins, it’s like people knowing about Steph Curry and not Micheal Jordan. It’s a travesty.
It was nice to see Vancouver give Rodney the proper rock star treatment. He could feel the ❤️
