- I began experiencing issues with intermittent air conditioning and noticed that the engine temperature gauge went to 0 when this happened. After initial fears that my car was overheating, I was became annoyed that I didn't have AC. Replacing this sensor should provide the car with accurate readings and prevent it from shutting the AC compressor off.
FIRST: Try disconnecting the battery, waiting 60 seconds, then reconnecting it. If problem is still there, continue with replacement. Had the same issue, gauge dropped to cold, AC stopped working, but still ran fine. I replaced the CTS first before checking the battery, turned the car on and the gauge was still not working. It wasn’t until after I reset the batter it went back to normal. Hope this helps.
Lifesaver, i just did this and it worked!! Good shit 👍🏻
Just did it and it worked first try
Dude this worked for me as well. You saved me a hassle. This is why you always check the comments first, I haven't even watched the full video yet!
One year later and you still saveing life’s bro appreciate it it’s hot as fuck
Thanks
old post, but maybe this will help someone who searches later on this.
I started having the same issue with the temp gauge dropping to 0 intermittently and throwing the code p0128 for the Coolant Temp Sensor and A/C blowing hot. When code is cleared it will function properly for a random number of days. Replacing thermostat and CTS/ECT did not solve the issue. But during the last couple of months of troubleshooting the CTS another issue emerged. The brake light will stay on even when pedal isn't depressed and when it is depressed the brake lights go off. Cruise control will not work when experiencing this and will randomly throw ESC(stability control)and TCS(traction control system) All of this can ultimately be traced back to the TSB #08-05-22-009C (Intermittent Brake Lights) The issue is High Resistance due to "fretting corrosion" in the BCM C2 or X2. Final solution is to apply dielectric grease to the C2 connections on the BCM.
Hopefully this helps someone so they don't have to deal with the frustration and throwing random parts at it and hoping for a solution
I actually am having this issue and searched the videos. Saw your comment. I'll do that as well but will replace the sensor since I already ordered it and dont feel like sending it back lol
I have 2007 Malibu with 73K miles and today i started the car and AC is blowing hot air and few minutes later i notice my temp gauge is still reading 0. I found a PDF file online that is 13 pages long and explains how to comply with TSB #08-05-22-009C. I am going to give it a try, hopefully it fixes it. Thanks
These are two completely unrelated issues the brake lights are a recall
Thanks
And it did help later on! Thank you!
Don't know how anyone could dislike this video. You saved me a few hundred bucks. Thanks for posting!
Because he didn't state which engine he has in the title, the Malibu came with 3 very different engine options. I down voted this video as well since my Malibu has a totally different engine and I wasted my time here.
Just take off the coolant reservoir container(2 bolts) and you will be able to reach the ect sensor, not necessary to remove the engine cover ✌
Can confirm it works. A deep 19mm socket will fit on the sensor
@@matthewallen9005 would advise to change the thermostat too.. in most cases mine too the thermostat got stuck, resulting in engine overheating and killed the sensor
Thanks
Thanks for this, found your video via the thread on the Malibu forums. I'm about to replace the ECT sensor and thermostat simultaneously, as well as clean and attempt to waterproof (or at least condensation proof) the BCM connections. Fingers crossed.
Thanks for doing this video. This is exactly what is happening with my 2010 Malibu. I'm not brave enough to do this repair myself but at least I'll know something is up if the repair shop tells me that they have to take 10 hours to disassemble half the engine to get to the sensor.
Ay mike, thank you for video of (ect) sensor. Man I did everything right. just didn't (REBOOT BATTERY WISE) have a bro. Inlaw that said I didn't have to reboot, so I let it be. didn't work for 2 weeks, my girl sufferd, Anyhow its been on my mind since I saw yours video. today i talk to Mr. know it all, bro. inlaw that I was going to reboot battery and he actually agreed and did IT for me and guess what A/C.... HALLELUJAH, 🙏 THANXS MIKE . take care
Great video .... what tool and size did you use to get the old sensor out? Is there a bolt next to it holding it in place or use a deep socket?
Thank you for taking the time to produce this video I'm sure it'll be helpful to many as it has been to me . If you would allow me to make a suggestion; the left or right side, the front or back side of a vehicle is established as if one was sitting in the driver's seat. Therefore the engine coolant temperature sensor is actually on the left side of the engine.
Hey you can also just unbolt the windshield washer reservoir for access
Thanks my car wasnt blowing cool air, i took it to autizone for test and it fot 0018 and all it was was the connecter was disconnecter.
Did coolant run out when you removed the sensor? Did you drain coolant first?
Hi! Thank for taking time to create this video. I am having this exact issue with my 2010 Malibu LTZ. So, did it completely fix the problem?
Yes
Can some tell me where is the hybrid system as far hybrid battery and module located on 2009 Chevy Malibu 2.4 . Thanks !
Ders times when im driving the temp gauge goin down to 0 and then back to normal? Could it b the the Engine coolant sensor
Yes, it was the same with mine where it become frequent and ended up stuck permanently at zero. This caused my radiator fans to run at max rpms and a/c clutch didnt seem to be engaging. Replaced the ecs and thermostat together, the thermostat since most users in the forums I read mentioned that just replacing the ecs alone didn't fix it(the old thermostat did look in good condition but Im no mechanic, plus didnt want to make another trip to the spare parts shop).
Works fine now!!
You can reach the ecs by removing the radiator coolant reservoir (2 bolts), which will give you some wiggle room🙂✌
Hopefully this help cause my car is still blown cold air it only stopped once but starting blowing cold air again. so i got it checked and it said its a sensor problem
Did that permanently fix your ac problem?
@@lennoxcooper3881 yes
On my 2008 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ, the A/C does not blow cold air and the engine temperature gauge is always at the bottom (on C) whenever I run the car... But two weeks ago the A/C spontaneously started working and blowing very cold air, which only lasted for three days. Then the A/C stopped blowing cold air again, and the engine temperature gauge is still at the bottom. My check engine light is also on and I'm getting a reading to change the fuel tank pressure sensor... Do you think I may have the same problem as you were experiencing?
Daniel Wahl Definitely sounds like it. This was intermittent for me as well and sometimes triggered the check engine light but you might have another issue as well with the fuel tank.
@@MichaelReuter thanks for the video and info... how long did it take you to get the engine cover off after you loosened the screws in the video? And should I drain the refrigerant before I try to replace the engine coolant temperature sensor, or is that not necessary?
Daniel Wahl It probably only took a minute or two but it was suctioned on there so tight I did a lot of checking to make sure I wasn’t missing something else. I don’t think it’s worth the hassle to drain the coolant as long as you have the new sensor ready and can swap it quickly. Not much is going to leak out in a few seconds.
My 09 malibu doing the same thing and i got new thermostat and coolant sensor put in
How much did the sensor cost?
Some who told me about you need to replace the sensor plug only to solve the temp 0
A trick: you can watch movies on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching loads of movies recently.
@Franco Jonas Definitely, have been using flixzone} for since december myself :D
@Franco Jonas yea, been watching on Flixzone} for months myself :)
I changed the ect sensor already but i am still getiing the a bad reading on my temperature gage is it possible maybe thre thermostat is bad?
yes, possible
Maybe… just put the oil cap back on instead of stuffing it?
Thanks.. trying to fix my fiances car.. same thing.. when she was driving the temp gauge went down to 0 and the AC stopped blowing cold, just warm air coming out. Question though, what did it take to get the cover off? I seem to be struggling.. did you pull from any specific side that got it loose first?
Crimtide There are two clips on the back you have to pull it out of too. One is on the left corner and the other is straight on in line with the oil cap. Pull up in the front near that hose and try to wiggle it forward and to the right.
@@MichaelReuter Thanks! Will give it a shot later
Just carry a code scanner in ur car all times and Erase the code, car goes limp mode from check engine loght
i’m super late, but i’m having the same issue with my 2009 chevy malibu, check engine light, temp gauge not working, AC will blow but wont blow cold AC, i changed the part, and it’s still not working, i didn’t disconnect battery after changing it though, so could that still be the issue?
Try swapping your thermostat, it could be malfunctioning!!
I have the same issue
A couple months ago I started having same problem. Temp gauge went down to cold, a/c stopped working, and check engine light came on. Replaced the ECT sensor and issue still remained. Hmm maybe thermostat? Had the thermostat replaced as well and when I cleared the check engine light the gauge immediately jumped and read temperature. That only lasted a day then gauge went back down. I though it had to be the wiring to the temperature sensor checked it and all good. Cleared the check engine light and again gauge immediately reads temperature again. But it only lasts a day at the most before the problems happens again. Any ideas what else I can try? I want to avoid dealer at all costs.
I just recently bought a 2010 Chevy impala LT. Drove it for about 2 days then engine hot ac off came on. Replaced temperature sensor didn't fix the problem. Next day replaced thermostat and refilled and bleed system good. Still nothing scratched my head for awhile. I unplugged the harness for tempature sensor plugged in the old sensor. Touched the old sensor on the warm engine while running. Fans shut off and engine hot ac off went away. Was able to use air conditioning. So I'm assuming I got a faulty sensor. This will at least tell you if your wiring is messed up or you have a faulty sensor. Also was able to erase code that was permanently stored. Going to replace sensor again in the morning. To see if that fixes it all the way. Also dont forget to disconnect negative when you replace sensor or thermostat.
Any questions feel free to send an email.

Was you able to fix the problem
@@marlonperdue nah bro, mechanic wanted to replace my water pump at a cost of almost 800 and he said “most likely that might be it” I had enough and traded the car in for a newer Malibu.
@@angelvarela9428 How is the new Malibu working out for you. Thinking about getting rid of my 2010 Malibu as I am having the same Problems you are/were having.
(Side note: I have family with your last name pretty cool,I’m from California)
@@macck4350 hey there nice to meet you. I drive for Uber so my 2019 Malibu now has 103K miles on it. So far so good with no mechanical issues so far. It has been easy do maintenance on it and much more easy to replace a headlight bulb. If you’ve had to do that in your 2010 you know what I’m talking about.
Strangely enough I’m from California too. I must be long distant relative of your family as Varela is a very uncommon last name.
How did you pull (or twist) the air temperature sensor out of its holding compartment? I wasn’t able to get it out at all, but I plugged in the new one to the outlet and just let it hang... temperature gauge on the dash is still all the way on cold and A/C not blowing cold air. please advise.
The coolant temperature sensor? I used a ratchet.
@@MichaelReuter Does the temp sensor need to be twisted into the fitting that was leaking the radiator fluid to work effectively? And do you know what size ratchet you used to remove the defective coolant temp sensor. I wasn't able to remove the defective coolant temp sensor but I did plug in the wires to the new coolant temp sensor and let it hang, but temperature gauge on the dashboard are still on cold.
Daniel Wahl Yes, it needs to be tightened into the engine block. It senses the coolant temperature, not the air temperature. I’m not sure what size it is but you can disconnect the new sensor and see what fits on it before trying to take out the old one.
@@MichaelReuter I got it tightened into the engine block and plugged in to the wires... Engine temperature still stays on C all of the time and air conditioning doesn't blow cold air. Any follow up steps you would recommend? I appreciate the help.
Daniel Wahl That should do it. It’s possible you blew the new sensor running it in air instead of liquid.

Hey man l have chevy malibu 2012 n the temp gauge went down n the ac stopped blowing cold. You think is the same problem the you fix???
Salvador Rocha Very possibly. Those were the same symptoms my car had!
Michael Reuter this just happens today this morning whit my car
Michael Reuter n by the way do you speak Spanish?
Salvador Rocha A good test would be disconnecting the battery to reset the computer and seeing if that temporarily fixes it. I don’t. :(
Michael Reuter ok disconnect the battery first ?

How much is a etc sensor
~$25

No
Do you have to put any tape on the new sensor or should I put thread lock on it
Chevyhi I didn’t and haven’t seen any leaks in my garage but it’s not a bad idea.
Did the new sensor solve your problem?
For now it did. When I first put it in the temp gauge did fine the next day it went back to 0 and the ac stopped working. Today it's back working fine. So I don't know
GM service info says to use an RTV sealant on the sensor
@@natyvia your problem is from the sensor plug only
