Arlen lived right next door to my step dads parents. His cars were built and maintained in a lil 2 car garage. My dad's brother went on road to events with Arlen to help him crew the car. The Good Ole' days. I believe that this was Arlens first Mopar after Leaving his sponsor Knafel and their Pontiacs. Tin Indian

In the background at the very beginning is a 1964 Plymouth Max Wedge car named The Reverent Mr. Black. I sponsored a track rental in about 2013 at Island Dragway in NJ and this car showed up. I met the driver and spoke every word of the lyrics to the Kingston Trio song of the same name and he was amazed. It had all factory original alluminum front end parts and was a totally authentic factory race care. And to top it off, the driver was a real Baptist preacher, as was the Reverend Mr. Black in the song. He ran perior correct mid 11 second times at about 125 mph. I believe he would have done better but for the way oversize rear slicks that actuall slowed him down.

My friend Cliff " Kip " Gunther was the Mechanic for this team, he got NHRA mechanic of the year for this. He told me that they were having trouble with the shifter before the race and that the Hurst rep gave them a new shifter, and the is history. He said without that shifter They would not have won. Cliff was a great guy , he was not a bragger about this event in his life, but I can assure you Cliff did more than help out! I walked into his small home office when I first meet him, he was my Neighbor, That Trophy he won for Mechanic of the year was on a book case. When I saw it I ask him what that was , and he told me the story, that's when I got closer and read the tag. I told him I could not believe he was my neighbor, we read about guys like him when we were kids but never dreamed of meeting them. This was in the 90's that I new him. His family is still racing to this day I believe. He was always talking about his Nice who was a Racer also and how proud he was of her.

Chrysler wasn't playing around when they made those A-990 Hemi cars for Super Stock. They wanted that SS/A World Championship in a bad way. Love the sound of that 13 1/2:1 Hemi. Great video, thanks for posting.

Actually, the compression ratio on the 1965 A-990 super stockers was 12.5 to 1.

The class decals should have read S/SA as in Super/ Stock Automatic. He has is SS/A which is incorrect for the time period.
