The type you wear everyday you remove retainer before eating, brush your teeth and put it back, before going to sleep you brush your teeth and retainer. For after braces, personally I brush my teeth then my retainer the night and in morning I remove it.
Its definently fake, as someone who's had the displeasure of smelling thier own breath after not brushing a few days thanks to brace wax, I can confidently say that if he left it in for 5 years his breath would smell like a dead body, and when your breath smells so bad that you smell like a dark age peasant, people are gonna bring it up.

i was actually supposed to get a retainer at one point but this was at the beginning of the pandemic so the dentist actually couldn’t get it to me and my temporary retainer broke so it would pinch my tongue and it was sooo dirty and my front teeth ended up growing apart and now i have braces again my left front tooth kinda sticks outta my lip in photos :’)
