Everybody is in here complaining yet Buster still mixes heavy guitars and instruments in general better than most people in the industry. The pick attack and high end is important in a mix.
ESPECIALLY with low tunings. People dont realize how much you lose when you tune lower than drop a#
You really need to bring all that high end attack back in to make it feel pleasant but still sound grimy.
Its a constant balancing act
This is what I got from the video: Used amp sim to get scooped lower mids/boosted upper mids, added an overdrive pedal, then eq'd the guitar before the amp and added even more gain. Then he took the duplicated the DI, threw a Sans amp for a little bit of distortion to get it to 'gel' better with the distorted amp. Lastly, he phase aligned all the guitars for maximum low end in the mix.
Imo this is genius for getting clarity on a low guitar. In Jason Richardson's 'I' Taylor Larsen did something similar: He had a clean guitar, crunch guitar, and distorted guitar all layered together and balanced in the mix to add clarity. It works like a charm. Good job Odeholm!!!
Sure, it's a great way to get a strong heavy tone; but it's really not new, I forget how many amps Bob Rock used on the guitars on the Black Album.
Also, a Sans Amp is still an amp model, it's just a digital model of a solid state analogue model of a valve amp.
But it's definitely interesting to see the whole process of how to layer without phase cancellations, this wouldn't have been easy back in the days of tape.

I layer clean and crunch tones deep down beneath my djent tones; they aren’t loud enough to hear but if you were to mute the clean or crunch amp you miss it when it’s gone
This isn’t a new concept or genius… if it is, then I guess I’m a genius for running dual amps. Using one for an acoustic simulator pedal out to amp B and had that running the entire time during my live set back in 2005… 😂
Adding a single layer of an acoustic guitar has been pretty popular to do in a lot of pop/rock for a long time for this exact reason. To add clarity… anyways, I digress, I agree it does make for a great tone.
The band hired this engineer to mix their record for a reason: they like how he mixes.
Our personal opinions on whether or not this is a good guitar sound are irrelevant.
This particular technique produces a similar effect to doubling rhythm guitars with acoustics to add extra percussive attack, without the need for additional recording and editing: should be pretty useful, regardless of the genre.
Buster is actually the guitarist for HLB and drummer for Vildhjarta :)
funny how many people hating in this comment section actually have no idea what they are talking about, this guy created an incredible crushing guitar tone that would sit wonderfully in a mix, really great tip.

Why so much hate in the comment section? People complaining about free insight into professional production? That's new... If you don't like the tone it means that the music is not for you, simple. This tone needs to slay, needs to be crazy and it does all those things perfectly, it's all about the context - Bass, Drums, Vocals & sound design. Master of puppets' tone wouldn't really work here lads.. c'mon.

Bunch of old farts crying over a metal guitar tone haha, I wonder why they clicked in the first place? This is literally a 5150 with blended crunch tone. What's the matter with "overprocessing", I really need the answer, because I'm confused af right now
Seems like a useful way to get more pick attack and definition in low tuned tremolo sections as well. I'll have to try this using a SansAmp clone.
I found whatever bass processing you can do that gets the CLANK from a bass guitar works for this technique.
Just getting that pick attack to be apparent.
what clone can i use
One thing I’ll do on recordings to get it to sound heavy that I stole from the engineer who recorded Alice In Chains/jerry Cantrell:
take a bass guitar, thru a wah pedal fully engaged or toes to the floor, into a guitar amp, and mimic the guitar riff strictly on the D string of the bass, then blend that in subtly. It adds the thall, the wah gives you that nasty band passed mid range only snark and snarl that if you dial in just so subtly adds so much spank. But you need a bass to do it. There are no rules. Learn the rules so you can break them with a discerning ear
They also mic the back of his speakers on the open back guitar cabs to capture that woofy low end.
0:52 it`s that kind of sound you hear when switching between different radio waves and stopped on the one with a bad signal for no reason
Any sound can be a good sound in the right context. What sounds good on its own and what sounds good in a full mix are two entirely different things.

Thank you guys for this tutorial. I've been rolling the gain knob back for the "string" tone and definition in a single channel forever.
I've recently ran my Bass through an ABY where the audio interface catches on channel with:
Bass --> Hyperluminal comp --> Radial J48 (acting as ABY) --> Channel 1
Then J48 splits to my bass distortion unit and goes into channel 2.
I thought blending the tones produced a very desirable sound. So this tutorial is really intriguing for me to try with my 7 strings. So after watching this video I went out and bought a radial ABY and a new distortion unit. So I'm gonna try:
Guitar --> Radial [A]BY --> Line 6 POD XT Live (Distortion Patch I like)--> Channel 1 of the audio interface
Guitar --> Radial A[B]Y --> Distortion Unit with EQ --> Channel 2.
Also thanks for the tips on phase. It's something I have some phase inverters on my radial gear, and in the DAW too I believe. I'll need to educate myself a little more on this topic.

Is there another way to achieve a similar sound without the auto align plugin? Like would any phasing plugin work?
What I absolutely love about these DI tracks is you can hear the string buzzing and slapping against the frets. A lot of guys out there complain that you can’t “drop tune a guitar to baritone levels because it’s gets buzzy and flappy”, yet here we are in the DI also buzzing and flopping around on a baritone as well. Don’t believe influencers yall
He's mixing the guitar almost like a bass. Metal producers have been blending clean low end with a separate distorted mids track on bass for a long time. Buster is treating guitar that way, which makes sense considering his guitar is tuned to same pitch as standard bass tuning.
I love his approach. He has a sound designer's approach to metal production and just does whatever he wants, convention be damned.

@thisguy2973 Yep, really low tunings are pretty challenging to mix. When you get down to E1, you're definitely well beyond what traditional guitar signal chains and mix techniques can handle well.
Personally my happy place is C# standard/drop B. I find it still sounds and feels like a guitar, it works great on a standard scale, even with 10s or 11s, and it is plenty chunky. I have a baritone, but I prefer my standard scale guitars tuned low. If I had the skills to tweak an in the box tone like Buster is, maybe my baritone would work for me, but I just don't like the sounds my baritone guitar makes. It's too bright and sounds too much like a bass.

A lot of hate here, but he’s showing a cool trick. I work also with very low guitars and I think it’s pretty difficult so thanks! But what are you doing with that phasing?
Reducing comb filtering, time aligning the two sounds. In turn having the two sounds in parallel be more in phase and work together with more clarity out of the speakers.
I have done similar by also running the guitars though a clean amp
The Nolly plugin can get so narly. I'm interested in what cab IR he was using.
The IR's are from TSE X50 v2. He goes over which ones he likes in another video mixing Humanity's Last Breath, may be the same ones.
The engineer for spiritbox uses the stock IRs in Nolly, and focuses more on morphing the DI before the amp.
Anyone knows how to get autoalign to work properly?

We have a 6 string guitars(30 inch scale). And multi scale 7 string guitars(27.5/25)
Can we for example record on 6 string all rhythm parts, and all lead parts on multi scale guitars.

Not affiliated with URM, but by all means go ahead! This is more common than you think tbh
If I'm not wrong, the band Leprous uses those kind of 6 strings in the studio but 8 strings live cus they have to play leads.

Phase/time aligning a parallel bass amp and guitar amp for 1 low tuned guitar DI.
Also some EQ on the low mids of the DI before the amp so it's less muddy.
What's there to phase / time align when its the exact same DI tracks just being affected differently?
@@DingusMcBrungusthe use of different plugins even on the exact same signal just copied twice can introduce different amounts of latency. or at least that’s how it’s been explained to me. it’s negligible rly and seems to be more of a producer choice, not something thats going to make or break a whole production

Y’all should actually listen to the song before giving him shit for a guitar tone in solo. Mix-ready guitar tones especially in low-tuned chuggy stuff always sound like this so the other instruments can actually do their jobs.

People here don't know shit about crafting a guitar tone, dealing with phase issues and stuff. Shouldn't watch mixing tricks when they just want to hear the same pentatonic boomer lick, played using a lespaul through a marshall since the 80's. People really need to move on already.

Cool trick, but I must admit I'm really not a fan of that stringy attack sound on guitars. This seem to be a trend, but... Last LP from Carnifex probably uses that trick and I find their guitar tone so annoying. Question of taste I guess *shrug*
Go listen to his actual releases. In the context of a mix, it's absolutely devastating.

What are these bands gonna do live when they can't mix 10 plugins into their digital amps?
it is possible but not always necessary since recording and playing live are very different, you wont need this in depth tone sculpting in a live setting while it is important for an incredibly sonically pleasing recording.
you act like production is something new and only recently bands are reliant on it to sound great. They do the same thing as everybody else, have a different tone live
Modern modeling amps are pretty capable. You could definitely get close live. Plus nobody expects it to sound the same live. Did anyone say that about Jimi Hendrix with his backwards guitar tracks?

@whybother1478 I have come to the conclusion that amp sims are the future, and also producers like Buster are the future. You simply can't do what Buster is doing with analogue gear. Analogue has it's place, we all like it, but plugins are going places analogue can't go. The level of control snd the flexibility is unlimited.

Ehhhh no, it's going through a cab, and because it's a low tuned guitar he's trying to get back the stringiness by mixing the sound. Idk how you guys expect a guitar going through an Amp with distortion to sound amazing, this is how it'll sound when mixed with all the other instruments

@@PASHKULI sorry to break it to ya, but meshuggah producer has used over 4 other tracks for 1 bass tone as well as plenty of other tracks for thickening a single guitar tone. You gonna tell me that isn't "over done". This is how audio engineering works. You get a sound that sounds like noise but shows clarity once in a mix. It's not rocket science, and no you can't just use white noise to make a breakdown because that isn't a guitar. Everything comes from a source and all comes down to the mix
