Plagiarism, Homosexuality, Pastoral Integrity and the State of the SBC: An Interview With Jim Osman

  • **I made a mistake in this video. I said North Point Church, pastored by Andy Stanley, is an SBC church. It was just pointed out to me that it is nondenominational. I thought that it was SBC because Andy's father, Charles Stanley, was an SBC pastor for many years and was a former president of the SBC. I apologize for my error. The issues regarding the softening of the SBC on homosexuality, however, remain and are documented in this video and others.

    One comment on the issue of homosexuality - I spent about 20 years as a homosexual. God, in His great mercy opened my eyes one day and saved me 21 years ago. While I still struggle against my sin nature, let me say that I'd rather be in the relationship with my God & Savior than anyone here on earth. Justin, thank you so much for speaking to that man in your video and I pray he does come to the real Truth and Life that is Christ

      @KellyDeanBishopatgmaildotcom I think you have a valid point. It's much the same as the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus quoted the commandment "Thou shall not kill" but said that if you hate someone, you have committed murder. Good deeds are not enough. They must be good deeds done from the right motive. I think this is part of why we fall into the "But I'm a good person" trap. We tend to look solely at actions rather than motives. Of course, the only motives we can truly know are our own but we never lie as well as when we lie to ourselves. Just writing this makes me realize my own sin more than 10 mins ago. Excuse me while I go thank God for all of His mercy to me :)

      Litton did a few interviews last year about his sermon prep. In them, he sounds very much like JP does about the importance of studying the Word yourself. He also talks about how he doesn't steal others work or make up fake examples as if they are his own, and even brags about how deligent and creative he is with his sermons. This isn't about him or his team being lazy or careless... To boast like he does in that interview while still in the middle of that Romans series just shows a complete lack of integrity.

    I'm real dumb. I don't understand why anyone would want to give up their time with the Holy Spirit who is the revealer and energizer of the Gospel (and from Whom a deeper understanding of the redeeming death and resurrection of Jesus is provided), to a team of others who aren't given God's commission to pastor their fellowship. How does that work??? God anoints and appoints men to be shepherds of a group of believers and to know, love and commit to them. How clever of Jim to compare giving sermon preparation to others, with handing over the responsibility for loving his wife to others. Great analogy! These are the two great loves of Jim's life. He's clearly not going to give them to anyone else to care for! We must all fight for time to spend in His Word and long to be led to a deeper understanding of His glorious gift of Himself. Everything else is secondary. Everything else MUST BE secondary. The question has to be asked - who is Jesus to these men who steal from one another?? Do they think our God doesn't see what they're saying and doing?? Do they not know they are lying to the King of Kings and Almighty Creator of the Universe? A pastor's job in his sermons is to exposit scripture and encourage those in his care to search the scriptures for themselves and share the joy and privilege of learning about our wonderful God with others. Great video! Thank you Justin and Jim.

    Justin Peters is my dear friend and a mountain of a Godly man! Brother, you mean so much to me personally, and I praise God that He has given you the boldness to stand upon the truth for the sake of the glory of God and the proclamation and defense of the truth. Jim Osman is 100% correct that the leaders of the SBC are cowards and will not stand up against the sinfulness and wickedness that is being promoted inside the SBC. Jesus warned about those who loved money, fame, and power more than His sheep. John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters the flock. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and does not care about the sheep.

      Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
      Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
      And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

      And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
      And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

      Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

How do you justify interjecting false-memory stories into a sermon and maintain at the same time Biblical narratives are literally true. Fully agreed. The SBC, as a denomination/association, is being judged and disassembled by God. Any Bible believing SB church should obey Rev 18:4-5 (which has a specific context but the principle is throughout the Bible). If they want to join another association that is conservative, that is fine, or stand alone. A denomination, association, or parachurch ministry is a man-made entity, which can be helpful if it submits to biblical truth and principles. But if it doesn't it needs to become extinct. God has only designed the church to prevail against the gates of hell. But even a local church, if it becomes heretical, will be rejected by Christ (Rev 2:5, 3:16). The effort, time, money, etc. (politics, basically) spent trying to save the SBC would be far, far better spent doing other things, biblical things.

    • @SolaGratia.
      @SolaGratia. 3 года назад +8

      @@TheLincolnrailsplitt Yes, same here, and it's sad on more levels than just the obvious one of dishonesty. My parents met in Bible College a million years, and for most of my life, my dad pastored our church, so I watched him spend countless hours burning the midnight oil to pour over Bible translations, commentaries, books and anything valuable he could get his hands on.
      I mention that in this context, because my dad was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease a few years ago and his handwriting was one of the first things to go. I inherited my love of calligraphy by watching him write while preparing his sermons, and now he can barely walk or complete a fully coherent sentence. It's so hard to watch.
      My father is losing more of his motor functions almost everyday, it seems, but if you were to walk past his desk even now, you'd see his Bible open and a pen in hand to write down any notes that catch his attention. He can barely hold that pen anymore, but whatever strength he has left is given to chasing after God.
      When I heard about this plagiarism situation I think it shocked me so much because I can't understand how any fully abled pastor, teacher or ministry leader would want to farm his sermons out for sometime else to work on our complete, much less copy verbatim and sell them as his own words.
      My father can even barely stand up on his own and his handwriting is barely legible, but he's holding on to as much as he can when it comes to studying Scripture. And he's been studying it longer than most people have even been alive, because the Bible is to him a pearl of the greatest price. He genuinely treasures every moment he gets to spend with it.
      When my father goes to be with Lord, he's leaving behind him a massive treasure trove of nearly his entire life's work in the form of hundreds of tapes, thousands of pages of type written notes, videos of his sermons, and shelves full of spiral notebooks filled with practically everything he's ever learned since getting a Bible.
      Yes, plagiarism is deceitful and wrong, but what feels even worse to me that these men treated God's Word and sheep with wilful negligence, as if they couldn't be bothered to take either one seriously enough to do the work and research for themselves. And when they pass away, what are they leaving behind for their church or families to inherite and glean wisdom from after all those years of fulfilling the imperative to feed the Lords sheep? A collection of plagiarized sermons, many of which are still unbiblical and would serve the church best by being tossed in the trash?
      It's hard to wrap my brain around that. I don't understand how someone that's been given the incredible honor of shepherding the Lord's flock could treat it as though it's worth little more than weekly entertainment.
      I just don't understand it. 😔

    Well, it looks like the rank and file in the SBC pews will have to proceed prayerfully and be the ones to address these issues.

    “Do you know why being a serial killer won’t send you to hell? Because not being a serial killer doesn’t send you to heaven.” Imagine framing any kind of sin that way. Makes no sense at all.

      Alot doesn't make sense bc some of what we have been taught isn't true. When something doesn't make sense a red flag should go up---not (in some cases) bastardizing scripture to prove an agenda or hobby horse. Once you start believing everything without questioning then deception creeps in. There is not the scripture basis for this place called "hell". Neither is the several times edited scripture. JC preached love and forgiveness---period. Imagine if we just start there,

      @@koakat4340 Luke 16:19-31 (ESV) 19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house-- 28 for I have five brothers--so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”
