Didaché - Are We Worse Than The Pharisees?!? Jim Osman and I Respond to Daniel Kolenda

  • In the latest episode of the Didaché podcast, Justin Peters, alongside Jim Osman, delves into a critical response to Daniel Kolenda’s assertions regarding miracles within the charismatic movement. Justin and Jim analyze Kolenda’s comparison between New Testament miracles and modern-day charismatic claims, particularly focusing on the authenticity of such signs and wonders. They argue that true biblical miracles were undeniable, even to non-believers, while modern charismatic acts often resemble parlor tricks. The discussion further addresses the theological implications and the historical context of cessationism, emphasizing the importance of discerning genuine miracles from deceptive practices.

I received a supernatural healing from a 10 year alcohol dependence. I was a horrible raging alcoholic. The worst of the worst in my opinion. One morning 7 years ago I woke up and said to myself…” ENOUGH, no more”. I quit drinking overnight with no withdrawals. I have a wonderful testimony now. God knew my heart for freedom. Oh, how I praise HIM!

But an absolutely amazing miracle is when someone is raised from the dead! That is something you see time and again in Spirit filled charasmatic churches but you never, ever see it in these demonic Cessationist churches. That shows which churches are right and which ones are wrong, because only God can raise or bring the dead back to life!

2011 Daniel Kolenda was at an event in germany that I was present at. He proclaimed from stage that a girl in the crowd had suffered from a heart failure for a few years and that God was going to heal it that night. What do you know in a crowd of 6000+ peoplethere was a girl that fitted the exact description, but her heart failure continued and I think she died (not completely sure). The local newspaper of course devoured it and exposed him for it. The next year he didn't make a single of such proclamations.

You know, one time in my life, I had a very scary growth on the back of my right shoulder. Being housebound, I have to have Support Services that come in and help. My helper at that time's name was Joyce. Joyce saw this thing too. Neither one of us WANTED to admit what it looked like but I finally said "It looks like cancer, doesn't it?" and she looked sad and scared and said "yes". I looked for something similar online and it was cancer. So she took me to the doctor's office. We both saw it that morning. That afternoon in the doctor's office, he looked and said "where?" Joyce jumped out of her seat to show him while I was pointing over my shoulder. There was nothing there. There was no explanation for it, except that I had asked a few people to pray for me about it. I remember on the way home, I asked Joyce if maybe I had made it up, and she said "Well I didn't make it up! I saw it."
That is a miracle. Something you cannot explain. The healing is so complete you even doubt that there was a problem in the first place, then feel a little crazy thinking that because you KNOW there was a big scary problem and now it's just gone.

I appreciate Justin's comment in the Cessationist film: "The very fact that there is a debate is self evident proof that these sign gifts do not continue." This sentence says everything that needs to be said about this issue. If sign/wonder gifts continue today, there would be a plethora of substantive and verifiable evidence to examine which would shut down all further debate on the matter. But, we don't have such evidence, do we? Nope.

People like Daniel Kolenda see things in black and white.
Years ago at a charismatic chatting site, I had an exchange with a woman (one of the leaders of the website) after I wrote on a message board that God sometimes wants to heal today, but doesn't always do that. I twice made that point very clear.
Her reply was along the lines of, "How can you believe in a God who never heals today? I certainly don't!"
I replied, "I didn't say that God NEVER heals today, I said that he does not ALWAYS heal today. He sometimes does, sometimes does not."
Her reply: "Well, I certainly refuse to believe in a God who ever heals today!"
Words like "sometimes" were not part of her vocabulary. Her mind seemed to blot such terms out. It was either "always" or "never". In the world view of these people, there's simply no other camp.

Would love for someone to address this side topic with Kolenda because I think it's important as it relates to qualification as a pastor: Kolenda divorced his wife Rebekah in 2022 & remarried Elizabeth in 2023. This is not gossip, this is fact. And to be clear, this isnt meant to imply blame on Daniel because we simply don't know.
No reason or detail was given to his congregation or publicly - which for a pastor of his fame should be made available to at least some degree.
My intention is not to speculate on detail, but to reveal he has not only shown himself to be unqualified in handling the scripture, he is perhaps disqualified as he is not "the husband of one wife" nor "above reproach" in how he has publicly handled the matter (swept under the rug).
Divorce is serious and immediately remarrying provides no possibility for restoration of the 1st marriage, which was blessed with 5 kids. Moreover, non-disclosure of the reason and then wiping Rebekah's footprint is concerning. Wikipedia use to mention the divorce and even that is now deleted.

Back in about 1991 on a construction site in Foster City, CA a nailer named Tom fell through a hole just cut in the roof about 30' faced down to the concrete floor. I ran across the roof and down the ladder and to the fallen man. His head was cracked like a melon and he was not breathing. I laid my hand on him and as I did another new believer also laid his hand on him as I prayed " Jesus just save his life" . Immediately he started moving but was not conscious. I removed his nail bags and gave instructions to go to the office and call 911. Then I instructed carpenters to drive their cars to key points to guide the ambulance. They came and got him and went to hospital. Near the end of the day a rep came out to talk to us all. The spokesman said he had broken ribs, broken collar bone, broken ankles, broken fingers on both hands, broken thigh bone. I asked "what about his head?" . The man said, " oh, there is nothing wrong with his head." Wayne looked at me and said "Jesus saved his life!". Wayne and I saw his head with one eyeball hanging partly out and bleeding. Wayne went after work everyday and witnessed to that man. That was a miracle.

I am a cessationist that could be put into the category of "no miracles nowhere ever". But let me qualify that: there are things that happen that we have no explanation for. Most would, I guess, be content in calling such things miracles. But to me unexplainable does not equal a miracle. When someone comes and tells me a story about a miracle, they are placing a requirement, a burden, an obligation, a yoke, on me. They require me to believe them, or else I'm an evil meanie, who practically calls them a liar. I refuse to submit to that. That is tyranny. They have no right to require that of me. I have never had anything miraculous happen to me or anything even close, so that it could be even speculated whether or not it was a miracle or not. It is always someone else, who tells these stories. I can not know, because I don't have a miracle-o-meter. I can not know if they lie, or if they are insane, or if they are simply superstitious and impute greater meanings on things than the things deserve. So when someone says they are healed of cancer and doctors are amazed, I'm sceptical, because I can not know if they are representing the amazed doctors truthfully. In this area we operate completely with our own FALLIBLE judgement. Our own ability to parse our surroundings is deeply flawed. Humans brains misremember, synthesize information and generate false memories. Notoriously untrustworthy. I am obligated to believe the Biblical miracles, so I do. But I am not obligated to believe anyone's stories, so I happily won't.

This is my thought. Someones “experience”. Has nothing to do with my faith. It’s like some people and or churches, that angels are “appearing.” I am sure you think you are seeing something. But it’s not what you think. Even John in Revelations was told by an angel not to fall down and worship him. So yes, I am more in line with your thought. I do believe God can heal people. But whatever experience people have. Has nothing to do with my faith. It doesn’t increase my faith. I just stand on the WORD.

Homework for everybody: research Montanism. We’ve literally done this before and it was condemned as heresy. Why? Because it’s not biblical! Because that movement was started by a man who simply claimed to be great and people took his word for it. We’ve done this before. If it were of the Spirit it would have continued, but that movement died out completely. The church has always been cessationist because it recognized the mere fact that people could no longer do sign gifts. There was no command, not change in teaching, no official council to declare it. They just stopped with some situational exceptions when the Lord so chose, just as prophecy has historically stopped over long periods of time. Just because God stops doesn’t mean he’s incapable. If anything it’s a test to see who will continue in the foolishness of choosing experiences over the Word.

In the late 70's and early to mid 80's I attended a First Assembly of God church in New Castle PA for a total of 7 or 8 years. They spoke in "tongues" and preached the gifts of the spirit and I believed without question. A faith healer named Dale Everett visited the church for a couple weeks and one evening asked if anyone would like to be healed of anything. A girl I knew who attended the church for years who had one leg about six inches shorter than the other went forward. We all stood around her and the preacher while he held her out stretched legs while supporting them by her heels which were in the palm of his hand. He prayed and we prayed. Her leg shot out about 3 or 4 inches and then another 2 or 3 inches more until they were even. I knew her. She wasn't a plant and she walked out of there carrying her corrective heeled shoes. Was that a visible miracle? I also experienced a time when two people gave a tongue message one morning during a Sunday service. When the man spoke out in a "tongue", the typical gibberish utterance, I instantly heard or knew the entirety of the interpretation like a download in my mind or spirit. Then the interpreter spoke exactly what I had just understood and knew. After the service I told my experience to my friend who was the person that originally invited to the church and he said the same thing happened to him during g that service. That means that at least 3 of heard, knew or understood the same message at the same time. Here's the thing, the tongue speaker wasn't speaking to a foreign crowd, it wasn't a known tongue and the interpreter was a woman. At the time, back in 1987, I thought that really something. However, about ten years or so ago I started listening to John MacArthur on the radio while driving to work. He was really bashing churches like the one I used to go to. So, I started praying for the truth of my experience and whether today's speaking in tongues were real. John MacArthur proved to me with scripture what the truth is about the practice of speaking in tongues. I read his book Strange Fire and was educated on tongue speaking. Thank God for John MacArthur and his rock solid correct teaching of the scripture. So, what about the healing I witnessed and the tongue experience I had. Both were real. Was it God that healed the girl's leg and a demonic presence that inspired the tongue speaking and the knowing of the interpretation that was validated by others or what? It happened and was real. To this day I'm still perplexed by what happened and what I personally experienced.

Derren Brown grew up and attended a charismatic church. He then got into doing hypnotism at College. He noticed similarities between church and hypnosis. He also studied magic. He has appeared on Justin Brierly's Christian podcast in the past. He did a lot of TV shows exposing psychics and even had a seance show, which ticked the psychics off in Britain. He is an Atheist and he is homosexual but he's quite a decent chap. He's done some good exposes. It should be mentioned, however, that he is a total skeptic of the supernatural along the lines of James Randi. You have to be careful with "magicians" because they know they are lying when it suits them. Randi's documentary was called An Honest Liar. In the seance TV show that Derren Brown did, one of guys that took part went behind a curtain and completely freaked out and screamed like he was dying until Brown calmed him down. I truly believe that that man freaked out because he encountered a demonic entity. But Brown puts it down to hypnosis. It's interesting because I saw a show in Britain some years ago where he was a guest and the presenter asked him, "what is hypnosis?" and his reply was "I don't know".
