You should have gone sightseeing while you were there. :)
Spain is a wonderful country
I love the sentence: "Some spaniards come here to honor him. Others come to be sure he's still dead". You defined Spain more than you think. By the way, Franco is not there anymore.

Went to Madrid last summer. It was awesome. Now I feel like I wanna go back there again.
Loved Spain.....stationed there in the Navy. Visited all of Europe , nothing like Spain...there is just something about it.....mystical, romantic, erotic, modest....the food, the dances, the culture, the art, the vino...the food...fiestas galore....and the Spanish women.....wow.....nothing like it...just AMAZING. This video is about 20 years old...pre Atocha attack, pre migrants on the streets. Madrid is beautiful easy to walk and navigate city....and the best capital in Europe because all the high points are so easily accessible and acheap subway,or cab ride. A good first day orientation is to get on a HopOn Hop Off bus tour top level near Plaza del Sol and ride the circuit so you,can orient yourself to the location of the,Palace, El Retiro, Atocha train station, and the Prado.....
As a Spaniard I had forgotten how Spanish Madrid was. Now there's so many migrants. God do I wish we could go back.
when it comes to bull fights, anyone who isn't a vegetarian and says bull fighting is immoral is a hypocrite. at least the bulls get to die with some pride and beauty
The inquisition killed no more than 20,000 people in 3 centuries, the French killed 21,000 in Saint Bartholomew's massacre in 1572 yet the Spaniard got the bad reputation for intolerance. Folks accuses of heresy were allowed to name 10 men and women who hated them and if one was one of the 2 accusers they were set free.

Philippe the 2nd was not enigmatic or introverted. That is part of the so called "black legend". In fact, apart from being quite handsome, he was a very cultivated man, that spoke several languages, travelled a lot and was interested in arts an sciences. And yes, he was sincerely catholic, wich was, btw, mainstream at the time.
He was also a result of generations of inbreeding, religiously devout to the point of fanaticism, and lost his Invincible Armada against England.
¿A result of generations of inbreeding? Come on. And he was as devout as the average man in his time. You should study a bit before writing nonsense.
@@xwiirastusx no... No fanatic, but an spiritual and deeply catholic man. You called Invencible, but that's is the propagandistic name invented by England. How was it
It was great. I loved it & can't wait to go back . I was in Seville for 5 weeks. Also visited Granada & Cordoba, & spent 4 days in Madrid. Beautiful country. As a history major there is so much for me to see.
Bullfigting: it's just an art, it's not about the cruelty, it's just the aesthetics...
That was the most pretentious and lame excuse for this sport I've ever heard. I love everything about Spain but the bullfighting has got to go soon.
It's already being banned by some cities and bullfighting is quickly losing popularity as elders die giving way to youth.
These more ancient aspects of Spain are decaying for good.
Well, it is a complicated thing. I am Spanish and against, but I am also from Galicia. We do not really practice that thing there. I have never gone to see them, actually. So I do not feel free to say anything about it. My view as many others is that those guys will eventually die, and their tradition with them. Same logic towards the monarchy, though.
I am against the bullfighting. Never seen one before and don't wish to see one ever. In Cataluña we have enough sense to forbid it, and I don't understand why Madrid is so reluctant to do it.
But I really disagree with you on the last...I like the royal family, and besides the occasional criticism of the previous king I think most of Spain is actually happy with el rey y la reina. And we have a very promising future queen, Leonor, Princesa de Asturias 😊
Yes, lame excuse it is. It is no bravery fighting a bull with sword with others out to kill it. It is rather most cruel thing in Spaniards to see. In fact, unnecessary cruelty is part of their blood.
What i likes about europe in general is after the continent have been the central stage for massive devastating wars it finally settled its contradictions and differences and decided to live peacefully with all the different cultures and nations it has, rich history the birthplace of the western mighty empires, and stark charming contrasts.

I also did the day trip to San Lorenzo El Escorial, and I would actually recommend getting an Airbnb there and spending a night. It's a nice change from the hecticness of Madrid, you don't have to rush at the monastery palace, and you'll even get a better price

We are leaving tomorrow for a week there, Rick, thanks a lot, fantastic.
I like Madrid, but there is a small problem that may later irritate some women who do tourism there. It is their gastronomy. When my wife and I went there last year, we ate so much "jamon" that she gained a few extra pounds.
so food is that much tasty there ?
Yes it is, in fact it´s said that all the best fish first come to Madrid to Mercamadrid and then it is distributed around Spain. Similar with meat. I would say that it doesn´t matter where do you travel in spain, food is really nice and different between regions. Best tuna in Cadiz, best meat in Asturias, best prawns in Huelva, best Cochinillo in Segovia, Best cocido in Madrid... Come and enjoy, you will be very welcomed :)

if you wanna know the history of Spain then read history books, good history books, and not these kind of videos, where the topics, false myths and ignorance are very present
By the way, the most impressive thing in El Escorial is the phanteon, when you can feel the History of Spain in front of you, watching all those graves of the ancient monarchs and kings. Saludos desde España and Viva Filipinas
First of all, Madrid is a beautiful and enjoyable city and this video portraits it very well.
However, the choice of Valley of the Fallen as nearby visit is very unfortunate. I assume you were not well advised by your local partners. There are many other more beautiful attractions nearby, which don't have the political bias of this place. Please, get well informed about it.
And, please, understand that bullfighting is not so popular anymore. A big portion of the Spaniards are against this brutal tradition.
I don't think it is absurd to visit the Valley of the Fallen... After all it is just next to El Escorial, and that village is a MUST.

Lovely liveable capital. Beautiful.
pff... "Bullfighting is not about animal cruelty, it;s about art" :))) of course it could be about anything you'd like it to be in order to sustain your point of view
Ioana Gabur Bullfighting is very controversial in my country. I'm Spanish and I don't like it.
Ioana Gabur I agree with you. Anyone can support ANY point of view! I can think of 100 reasons why Bullfighting is AWESOME. Salutations from, USA!
Ioana Gabur You are right. I agree that it is crap. Imagine I skin him alive and tell him it's not murder or torture but about the intricacy of my carving skills and my surgical precision while skinning him.
Ioana Gabur i´m a spaniard and vegetarian. I hate bullfighting like many other spaniards. But the dude is right: people don´t go to a bullfight to see the animal suffer. In their hearts it is an art in witch the bullfighter dances with death in the form of a bull. In that way is a full experience of life and a moment of perfection in witch times stops. There is of course all the artistic ways of performing this encounter, but in it´s core it is a strange way of celebrating of life by acknowledging death, ether bull´s or bullfighter´s. In exceptional cases the most brave of bulls are "indultados", that mean are not killed and become themselves part of the legend. I personally desagree with this view, but it is what make people vibrate with the whole "fiesta".
MrCarlos0435 Thanks for elaborating and I see what you mean. I find it poetic but somewhat antiquated.
That guys reaction to the ham was priceless. I can think of a few expressions that matches.
Madrid isn't as popular as London, Paris, or Amsterdam, but it's a beautiful city. It's worth a visit.

yo he estado en el prado y hay muchisimos cuadros y esculturas, tantas que te aburres de tanta hermosura,es mas, hace falta mas de un dia entero para verlo tranquilamente
To be faire, the Louvre is stunning.
Well Spain is very seasoned, unless you visit in the summer or special occasions things that are impossible during those times can be emptier. Besides the Louvre in particular has huge renown all over the world, the French are far better at marketing and the Louvre is very easy to merchandise.
London is depressing and Amsterdam too.
