- Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2002 | In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous markets and go-for-Baroque palaces, while office workers surf in the Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the fairy-tale castles of "Mad" King Ludwig, and climb to the highest point in Germany atop the Zugspitze. Then we cross into Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #munich

Rick Steves, America's most respected authority on European travel, writes European travel guidebooks, and hosts travel shows on public television and public radio.
Rick Steve's is to traveling as Bob Ross was to painting...same type of relaxing narration...love it! and watch both.
Agree 100%. To know them is to love and admire them.
Yeah I agree, I don't even know why I like watching these but I do. I'm not a history guy at all, but these videos make it seem cool.
this is an old reply but i do agree.
@@xctf1230 i look at most of these following my ancestry. munich being one place out of many german towns/cities. can travel without spending a dime.
@@yamahonkawazuki yeah, our history teacher had us watch one for an assignment and thats how I got into it 😂
I homeschool and we are watching these as we "travel" to Germany 🇩🇪
Great idea 💡
One of my favorite places in Europe is Bavaria. Some of the best memories I have are there.
Same here! I was there last June with some family, and it was a dream come true for me. I had always wanted to go to Europe since I was young. We visited Munich, Stuttgart, Feldkirchen, stayed a night in Vienna, and went to Salzburg. I actually cried a few times while on the trip. It was breathtaking
I am currently on a RUclips tour of Europe, and Rick Steves is my guide.
His narration is very charming, knowledgeable nd great.
I am a travel RUclipsr in Kolkata. Kudos to you
Its great nd fantastic news Shantanu ji
Dear Rick, I live in Munich since many years now. Today an American friend sent me your video. I love it. Thank you so much for this wonderful presentation.
Hello Dr. Anna
4:25 the beer lady is immortalised in every rick steves’ europe intro😄😂
It doesn't get any better than Bavaria , the history , culture , Architechture & the wonderful people , then you have the Bavarian alps , just heavenly , The people of Bavaria have a lot to be proud of , all this from a scotsman
Having just come back from Munich, I am not sure to be more amazed of the art work and history or the fact that the city was completely rebuilt, including many works of art.
The view at 18:36 is some serious fantasy stuff.

Beautiful observations! Hello from Beverly Hills California
Good catch!
Bavaria is absolutely stunning. I was there 30 years ago. I visited the castles of Ludwig II. I remember sitting on the balcony of my hotel at night, looking out to see both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles light up at night. It really felt magical. I've been to Munich twice and it is such a great city. Would love to go back.
I’m going in June with some family. It has been a dream of mine since I was young to go to Europe. We are going to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
I like Rick Steves' narratives, so watching his programs is always a pleasure for me. And Munich is really a very nice visit. But I would add the "Deutches Museum". A unique museum
Deutsches Museum*
I have traveled far and wide, and Bavaria is without doubt the most beautiful place I have ever been.
Rick Steves has given us plenty of places to see and things to do over our many years if travel.
i think germany is such a beautiful country, i was there whille in the U.S ARMY, stationed in AUGSBURG, Visited MUNICH , and went to tour a castle but don,t remember the name. their small villages are so quaint and very clean, beautiful mountains, this was in 1952
Wow then you must be fairly old now!
When I was in Bavaria (65-66) I loved to drive the back roads on a day off of duty until I would find a gasthaus a la 'Cabaret' and have a lunch of sausage and kraut, a dollop of mustard, with a liter of bier. Nothing finer in the USA.
I can travel all over the world from the comfort of my home. I always love Rick Steve's Europe. He's truly authentic and has lasted through out the years.😎😎😎😎2018 and forever...
Munich great city and place of castles and mountains and marvellous views great trips. 1980/90s
Great Work by Rick Steves. Europe is full of Historic work and Greenery. I love Europe.
I hope the old charm of Bavaria is never step on by modern buildings and trendy living.....
Oh,really? Didn't know that... and I live there.
@JR Kipling that's just not true
JR Kipling Invasion may be the wrong term.
Dacron invasion definitely is the wrong term
@@danielguy851 Invation mostly make destruction, so yes. But keep hoping München never get any modern buildings in a greater amount...
Because of your excellent presentations, I have been able to travel around the world without setting my feet out of my country. Thank you very much.
I love all of Rick's European videos, but this one is my favorite, probably because my favorite European country is Germany, with Bavaria being my favorite part. He does a great job of sharing some epic highlights. I've been there twice in the past 12 months and I can't wait to go back!
Visited Munchen once recently and to me it was the nicest town in Germany (been to different parts over the years). One striking feature is that every eatery has beer and every time you eat you've gotta drink different beers in humongous mugs. Another striking fact is that no matter how many beers you drink a day, you never get drunk, unlike American beer, flat but alcoholic. A third striking feature is that the typical German (or what they consider Bavarian) homes are located in a small part of the town, the rest are typical new European design like boxed multi storey apartment buildings, each of different colors. The Marienplatz is the hub for people and is the main attraction for everyone.
I'm visiting Munich next week! I am incredibly excited, this is my first time on the main continent of Europe, it looks like the most beautiful place in the world!
+Conner Hendrick since your comment is 6 month old, i guess you vistited? how was it? ^^
Good for cycling and geocaching and exploring
This man got so amazed by Bavaria that keeps visiting it
@@isabellamori592 He got germanized. He doesn't respond anymore since it would be ineffiecent. :-|
Yes, the foundation, by Nature in the natural world and from there created by through Wagner and the nature of King Ludwig's inspired genius.
Bavaria was my favorite part of Germany. I miss many things about Germany such as October Fest and the beautiful Alps. Thanks Rick Steves for the tour and reliving my memories.
A bit of heaven on earth. We did Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Salzburg and would love to return.
Hey Doug....we are going there late fall (mid-November). How many days did you spend to visit all this region? And does traveling in late fall makes sense?
I've been there multiple times. There is basically hardly any snow anymore and temperatures are warm. Defenitely less tourists than in summer or xmas
***** Munich really rocks! did you travel there already?
Chris B Sure! this is a lovely region!
mid- November is the worst time to visit middle and northern Europe, concerning weather and many tourist locations are closed then. For example places in the nice nature are not able to visit. But the climate Change will give you a little chance that you can get nice weather even in November, but usually it is windy, rainy and cold +15 to -5 degrees Celsius.
Rick please keep on travelling and sharing! :)
Very beautiful country
Wonderful part of Germany, Munich is a great city wonderful food, beer and lots to see.

As somebody living in Berlin for now about 20 years, I can definitely deny.
Well, I personally think Berlin is terrible compared to Munich ;-) And I know many other folks from Berlin who share my opinion. So what exactly makes you think that yours is the right one? I guess it really is a matter of personal favor.
Well, I could at least give the same amount of arguments pro Munich and contra Berlin. But like I said, it is simply pointless to discuss something that completely basics on personal favor and preferences. Therefore, I find it somehow wrong to tell somebody "this is the better city because xxx...". Just let them find out for themselves :)
I was in Berlin several years ago my previous visit to that was many years before the Berlin Wall came down. I was amazed at the changes that had already been made and the way this great capital city was being returned to its former glory.
I wouldn't even attempt to compare Munich with Berlin both have their own attractions and I would urge people to visit both.
If you visit Berlin then prior to your visit go on the internet and book a visit to the Reichstag I gather it must be booked in advance so I was disappointed. However it is a city I plan on returning to, I want to do the river cruise along the Elbe and also repeat the Berlin city river cruise a wonderful way to see the city.
Thats what I meant, they both have their very special attractions :) and are pretty hard, if not impossible to compare
I'm so glad to find this series on RUclips !
Rick Steves does it again! Quality narration nuanced to suit the topic with interesting insights presented in plain speech. Masterful.
I am Indian, can not believe such beautiful places. Thanks a lot for Travelling dream places...... thanks !

When in the Army I lived for a year in Bad Aibling, about fifty miles east of Munich near the Austrian border at Salzburg. Fascinatingly beautiful part of the world. Watching this Steves' program reminds me of that area. I went to Munich many times but never to Salzburg. I wished I could have but that was during the Cold War, long before the European Union.
I miss the October Fest. One of the prettiest parts of Germany. I really would like to have that time back. The Alps are just breathtaking. I miss those nice peaceful days unlike in the world today. Thank you Mr. Rick Steves for bringing back the wonderful memories. Safe travels and adventures.
Just returned last Tuesday from an AMAZING 11-day adventure to Germany (and Austria). So many wonderful and beautiful things to see and do, and much to learn; my senses went into overload, lol. This was my first trip; I'm most definitley going back:)
Hello Katrina, how are you doing and how's the weather today?
Hello Katrina
Did you go solo?
I was born in Munich in a military hospital but now it is a German hospital. We lived in Hessen from 72 to 96 when my father was in the military and then worked for the military
I visite Bad Tôlz several years ago and was blown away by it . I even took in the street signs so when we missed the last train from Munich after the Oktoberfest we too a cab and I knew exactly where our our hotel was .Great country and hopefully one day I would love to get back for Christmas. I bet it's great that time of year as well . Greetings from a "New Yawkah"
Some say it's even better. ;)

@LagiNaLangAko23 yeah the far west is dying it's so incredibly sad. Germany now compared to a decade or more ago is so sad to see.

I learn about places like this, and I strongly feel that Bavaria, and Austria/Germany is my true home. Where the blood that flows within me had originated here.
Thanks Rick
Love you so much for the video.Bavaria is just like heaven.I was born in Frankfurt. But to me,Munchen is the sweetest European city.
Thanks Steve, you're the best! I travel with you....
We love Bavaria area, and falling in love with the Neuschwanstain Castle....such a beautiful castle. And the other one Linderhof also super pretty, small and elegant. love ... love...love it.

Thank you, Rick! Another fascinating, mouth-watering, magical mystery tour you have brought me.
Ich liebe mein Land und meine Heimat.
Beautiful city...
Thank u Rick! Your work is wonderful!
Been rewatching this 3 times to fall in love with Bavarian men and culture!
Thanks Steve!
Although a bit dated, Rick Steeves always provides very helpful information! Going to this area next month!!
I love this man's travelogues(?). If I ever won the lottery, I would retire in Bavaria...........in the Alps, of course. When I was stationed in Germany (1980-1982), I traveled to the Alps 4 or 5 times. I remember being up in the Alps and staying at a mountaintop gasthaus and seeing all the wildflowers and feeling the ambient beauty of the place. I traveled to a small village and watched the cows return from their high pasture and the way the cattle would stop when one of them would stop and get a drink of water at a fountain. When the cow was satiated, they would continue on, cow bells and all. What an enchanting place.
dear ricksteves im from the phillpines.. i been watching your video i really love scotland and germany my dream to go those place... but im no rich person.. see those place.. my dreams.. thanks...
Ahhhhhh Munchen (no umlauts on my keyboard)....many fond memories ! I was there in eintuasendneunzehnhundredsechsundseibsig, for give the spelling, for a high school German class trip. I learned so much about the history and language of Germany....the rides on the Ubahn in Munchen at night was fun...we rode all over the place...you could eat off the floors back then...the Germans were extremely clean back then...I don't know about now.
Love Bavarian Germany from the UK
Looking forward to my travels to Munich, one day soon. Thanks Rick!
Great to watch your video and see the places we have visited last year (2017) !!! We had a great time in Munich and really fun experience at Hofbräuhaus! And the castles were just breathtaking!
Munich really has a lot to offer! There are aswell a big zoo, the famous BMW museum,a great football stadium and for the younger people there are great place to go out ( without lederhosen !!) And the best thing : It isn't that expensive !!
but to live there it's the most expensive city in Germany
Such a wonderful place!
Great 👍

Looks like a great place that only needs to be visited once, must add it to the list of places to visit 😃
Awesome Steve. Thanks a lot for the exploration :) keep posting these type of videos for the world
