  • Rick Steves' Europe © 2002 | Cruising the Rhine River, we dodge riverboat traffic and the legendary Lorelei. After climbing castles and descending into dungeons, we relax with Rhine wine. We tour Burg Eltz - a lived-in castle where the noble lady still puts out fresh flowers. Then we enter the walled town of Rothenburg for Germany's best wood carving, a vivid dose of medieval punishment, and a tour with the night watchman of the town's lamp-lit ramparts. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #germany

    The company I worked for in Australia offered me a job in Germany back in 2005. I accepted and stayed for around 14 months and my apartment backed on to the Rhine. Every weekend I was off exploring the little towns of the Rhine and Mosel. Looking back now they were some of the happiest days of my life and I do miss Germany, it is so under promoted and underrated. If you ever have the chance to visit then do ....you will not be disappointed!

    In 2011 I rode a bicycle from Beijing to Amsterdam, riding along the Main and between Bingen and Boppard. I try to plan my bicycle trips with the UNESCO Heritage Site map as a guide. I was fascinated by all of the medieval tons and castles.

    The Burg Eltz is also my absolutely favourite Castle in Germany, maybe in the World❤

    • @LUIS-ox1bv
      @LUIS-ox1bv 10 месяцев назад

      Burg Eltz is strictly not a castle, but a fortified, family residence. It does not exhibit what would have denoted castle construction in Germany or in any other country in Europe.

    Why do we in the USA tear down the beautiful historical buildings and lose our charm?? They tore down a nice large library built in the 1960s to build a new one. I asked what was wrong with the present building. They said water problems or something like that. Not leaks. I said, what about the beautiful, huge buildings in Europe that they keep maintaining. They said I don't know.

      +MICHAEL DAVIS in the USA you have the boom-bust culture; as soon as something isn't profitable you tear it down or abandon it. There are 1,000s of abandoned buildings in the USA, anything from 100 years old to the 1970s, all having historical value, from train stations to vacation getaways, all rotting away.

    I was in Rüdesheim during August absolutely wonderful place. Marvelous cable car ride to the top giving you these spectacular views over the Rhine and the vineyards. Always the downer for me are the souvenier shops, you pick an item you like and find its made in China. It goes straight back on the shelf, I don't visit any country to buy a souvenier from China unless I am in China. There is nothing like finding the local hand crafts.

      Erin Maria i think Tridhos is absolutely right. If you visit a country you should support the local. And the locals should sell local goods in touristic places. No matter if it's for the authenticity (?), economy or the receiver of the souvenir... No offence to chinese products. But if i am on a visit to X, i wanna bring home something an honest fellow of X crafted! Souvenirs made in another country are sad, period to me.

    Very nostalgic watching this video. My wife and I lived in Germany for a year early seventies. Burg Eltz was one of our favorites. The day we were there, the German air force had decided to do to practice strafing runs up the hill toward the castle. Quite a memory of the mix of cultures and times.

    We lost so much of our herritage in the War, we don't want to loose any more of it. Most medieval buildings are protected by the "Denkmalschutz". It is prohibited to change them or their appearance. And repairs have to be done with the original techniques and materials. These places remind us of better times, before the 12 Nazi years that we justly paid with lives, land and the destruction of our identity. So we love and care for them.

    • @SecretStepDaddy
      @SecretStepDaddy 3 года назад

      Yea if it wasn’t for Hitler, Germany wouldn’t lose so much territories to Poland, France, Russia, Checkia. Most of those places would have been better off as part of Germany

    • @DLT-po6to
      @DLT-po6to 3 года назад +2

      @@SecretStepDaddy Well yeah we mainly lost the lands of Prussia, Pommern and Schlesien to poland, which was culturally very important to us. Especially Prussia (Preußen). Not to speak from the millions of germans who had to leave the land of their ancestors forever. But much worse than that or the destruction of our cities is the cultural damage. Its hard to be proud of your culture, people and your country if they have done things like the nazis did. There are many who still can't accept that. I love my country and am proud of the fact, that my people managed to rise out of total destruction to become one of the richest and most influential countries in europe. With help of our western friends, of course. The russians just pillaged us and turned a thrid of germany into a prison for 40 years. But in the end the 12 nazi years will forever stain our culture and our reputation.

    • @SecretStepDaddy
      @SecretStepDaddy 3 года назад

      @@DLT-po6to Thanks for your thoughtful response. It is a complicated history for sure. I find Germany to be the heart of Europe. I hope it’s culture survives into the future, while living peacefully with its neighbours.
      Globalization means many cultures and languages are disappearing and being replaced with a homogeneous global culture. I personally don’t like that. I prefer different cultures to exist into the future, but I can’t control of predict the future
