Yes, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close and Judy Davis were all probably told they weren't 'good looking enough' to make it in Hollywood, when all three are the three top actresses of the 1980s and are still working today with them still winning awards.
Surprised you didn't mention Judy Garland. Even after she got big, she was still considered "unattractive," forced to take diet pills and wear fake dentures. One of the many factors to her eventual breakdown and death.
Pretty telling that most of the women on the list who were told that they weren’t pretty enough for the industry were women of *Jewish ancestry* (Winona Ryder, Pink, Barbra Streisand, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kat Dennings), *women of color* (Mindy Kaling, Viola Davis), or women of *Southern European ancestry* (Nia Vardalos and Lady Gaga). 🤔🤔🤔 Apparently, to be “beautiful” in Hollywood is to be white, and of Western or Northern European ancestry.
Wow, I didn't realize that Meryl Streep had auditioned for the role that was played by Jessica Lange in The 1976 adaptation of King Kong And The reason why she didn't get the part is even more baffling
Screw the critics. Nobody has that right to tell someone about their beauty. Everyone has their own unique beauty. As long as you like what you see, work it don’t change it.
Not about being blonde or blue eyed honey. Winona Ryder is a natural blonde with blue eyes and many other actresses here have blue eyes and could easily dye their hair blonde if it was really that easy to get roles as a blonde. I doubt anyone would say Monica bellucci isn't pretty enough cause her hair is dark and eyes too.
The Color Purple proved that beauty is only skin deep. The more you learn about Celie, the more beautiful she becomes. No scene in ANY movie in my life of 61 years moves me like that scene when her children and sister return from Africa to reunite. This tough Texas woman is reduced to tears as soon as she says "probably some folks who lost their way"
Beauty is subjective... but Hollywood beauty isn't as subjective. They were told correctly: nearly all of these women aren't pretty enough... luckily they are all talented, brilliant people who are skilled enough to be cast for a reason beyond their looks.
I am sorry but how many blondes with big boobs and lip injections are respected in the industry? The ppl who cast females based on their "blond sex symbol" criteria are not looking for a good actress, they are looking for a sexy filler. To conclude, if all of these women fitted the Hollywood criteria, they would not have been as respected and acclaimed in the industry as they currently are and that's even more sad for all the talented blond chicks who get type cast in every dumb sexist comedy and have no room to grow.
wow all these women are beautiful and talented .....lady gaga is very attractive without all the costumes and makeup just plain brown hair little to no makep she is gorgeous
I loved the movie, Lucas!!! I saw it in the theater like 4 times... lmfaoooooo! I remember going to see Heathers in the theater. It was a pre-screening with the director. It was a pretty neat experience.
"Coventionally beautiul" - that is one of the most insulting expressions I've ever heard - "not pretty enough" - I think I'm sick of the word "enough".
And want to know the stupid thing about “conventionally beautiful “? It changes from era to era. No one can keep up. I’m considered ugly just because I don’t have a big butt , in the 90’s however I would’ve being “ideal” due to my waif like figure . Pretty stupid how one feature we have or don’t have can define us as beautiful or ugly for a certain era huh?
I remember my 14 year old ass watching 2 broke girls and I sometimes cried myself to sleep because I wished I was as beautiful as Kat Dennings. To think of it, to this day I still think she’s the most beautiful actresses I’ve ever seen. The fact that someone was actually blind enough to call her unattractive shocks me to my spinal cord
sometimes a not regular nose or a space between the tweth or other flaws can give something personal and fascinating....its called personality and it is a precious advantage
I just love the confidence and ultimately sense of pride and self preservation for these women to let themselves be themselves and make it anyways!!! Kate Winslet n Pink are fantastically gorgeous!! As are all these ladies. But I always fancied those two wonderful ladies!! 💯🌹🇨🇦❤️❤️
Hollywood has been such assholes for downplaying these gorgeous women like this....and God help me...why is Sandra Bullock not mentioned? Hollywood degraded her telling her she would never make it as a Lead, because she wasn't 'beautiful' enough. Then her performance in 'Speed' made them eat their tongues.
I watched this list to boost my confidence. Because seeing how many beautiful people, like ridiculously pretty people have been called ugly makes me angry but also think. We see ourselfes so much worse than we actually are.
@@dimidrugg9592 Well then it's their attitude. With a friendly smile on their lips they would probably look very different and pretty. Or it's just your subjective opinion? Lady Gaga never even caught my eye until I saw her in 'A Star is Born' with the messy brown hair and no makeup. Every time I saw her prior to this movie I thought she smacked of effort with all of the clown makeup. I can't be the only guy who thinks that. Her nose is mentioned in the movie but I hope in reality she knows she should never "fix" it. It's very pretty and perhaps her prettiest feature.
here to save you some time:)) 10- kate winslet 9- pink 8- kat dennings 7- nia vardalos 6- mindy kaling 5- viola davis 4- winona ryder 3- lady gaga 2- barbra streisand 1- meryl streep
I thought Streisand was beautiful in “The Way We Were” and clearly a LOT of people were convinced she could be Robert Redford’s love interest. When stars are TOO conventionally beautiful, it comes off as unrealistic.
Hollywood prefer blonde, blue-eyed-Anglo/Aryan looking, slender and with delicate features girl. I see pattern here, a lot of these women on the list are either brunette and or brown-eyed (except Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Pink) or typical/average weight and or mostly have sharp, masculine features (except for Winona Ryder).
Why is it only the women have to be pretty? In any case, all of these women are lovely. Winona especially has always been a stunner. Anyone who thinks Streisand is unattractive should check her out in “Funny Girl,” and “What’s Up, Doc.” She was stunning. Streep was homecoming Queen at her high school - apparently, they appreciated her beauty. And just WTF does Maxim hold as qualifications to deem ANYONE unsexy?!! Love to see the panel that determined that.
They're all gorgeous! They let their inside nature show on the outside and it lit them from within. Besides, why would you want them to all look "a certain way"? Then you could never tell one actress apart from another. Our differences make us beautiful. Life would be boring if we all looked the same.
My role models are babs and Meryl Streep. My mom's side of the family is Jewish. I was always bullied growing up for my nose. It was always the butt of everyone's joke. They used to call me hook nose and all sorts of other names. I used to always watch funny girl and just look at babs and admire how beautiful she is and how unapologetic she is about her looks. I used to always sing the line from her song "I'm the greatest star" that said "who's an American beauty rose with an American beauty nose!" with pride. As I got older, my sister in law started calling me Meryl, because she said I looked like her and reminded her of Meryl Streep. Which is one of her and mines favorite actresses. So I took that as a badge and I smile every time I see both women on the screen and whenever I sing a song from babs
My best friend is from Congo and has had people tell her because her skin is so dark she's ugly. I can't understand that. She's fucking gorgeous, as is Viola Davis. And if beauty wasn't enough, Viola Davis has an amazing energy about her, she just looks powerful.
Lady Gaga's nose is beautiful! I hope she doesn't attempt to "fix" it. As far as her looks go, she's adorable. I had no idea how she looked without the costumes and garish make-up.
Pretty is always subjective (although all of the mentioned celebrities are fucking gorgeous) but none of that matters when you got the TALENT. Gotta have them singing/acting *CHOPS* Edit: OH SHIT I FORGOT MINDY WAS A FUCKING WRITER FOR THE OFFICE TOO LIKE DAMN THAT SHOW IS FLAWLESS Edit Part 2: Thank fuck Barbra didn’t get a nose job because she looks great and HER VOICE WOULD HAVE BEEN FUCKED AND LOSING SOMEONE THAT FANTASTIC ON BROADWAY AND OFF WOULD HAVE CUT DEEP
Meryl Streep and also Glenn Close are great actors who dont fulfil the image of a beautiful breathtaking Hollywood Star and that is okay, because they are both GREAT actors beyond compare!
I can relate to the big feet. I have them too... You missed one. *Barbara Eden* was told by the movie studio that she was just "ok" in the looks department. Can you imagine someone telling our favorite Jeannie she's not that pretty? Insane... 🍾
I like to think that Meryl Streep sometimes late at night with a glass of wine sits there and laughs about how that one person calls her ugly while surrounded by her Academy Awards

Screw the critics. Nobody has that right to tell someone about their beauty. Everyone has their own unique beauty. As long as you like what you see, work it don’t change it.
All of these women are gorgeous. There’s definitely a pattern here. If you’re not a blonde, blue-eyed white woman, you’re not pretty enough. 😡
No they are just ugly lol, I seen plenty of hot non blonde and blue eye women and they do not look like the ones on the list.
Stop saying bullshits about Winona Ryder . She is brunette and her eyes are brown . I mean wtf you saw that they are blue ? ............
@@alissincatlandac3259 yer right. They are brown, my mistake. She is a natural blonde according to her.
Amy B I’m a blonde blueish eyed woman and I’m told I’m ugly .
Winona Ryder and Lea Michele!?
They’re both stunning!
Viola Davis is a bad ass. No one plays a strong overlord better. She was the whole show in "Suicide Squad".
No one should be criticized by looks. Where's equality?
Starsteps to heaven lmao
They think men aren't judged on their looks which is definitely not true at all.
The Patriarch maybe a little but I see way more ugly male actors
lady gaga is absolutely stunning. so is every other woman on this list. people are crazy for saying they aren’t beautiful enough.
Octavia Spencer is another star who was told this and flourished despite the criticism. I think I heard it on the podcast she did with Sam Jones.
Kate Winslet isn't average looking. She's pretty.
Shes very average looking, many people would agree.
Judy Garland should be on this list too.
Two words: Whoopi Goldeberg. I can't imagine the stuff she went through.
She looks great in Ghosts of Mississippi, I don't love the way she presents herself, however. It's her choice.
"You shore is ugly!" Lol. Sorry. That was a quote from The Color Purple. I love Whoopi
The Color Purple proved that beauty is only skin deep. The more you learn about Celie, the more beautiful she becomes. No scene in ANY movie in my life of 61 years moves me like that scene when her children and sister return from Africa to reunite. This tough Texas woman is reduced to tears as soon as she says "probably some folks who lost their way"
Gaga looks good when she isn't all made up in wierd costumes.
kabir kabir How does it contradict it? The OP is saying that the gimmicks actually detract from her natural looks, which are really very beautiful.
The weird costumes were partially a result of her being told she wasn't naturally beautiful, though.
Hollywood must be blind, everybody on this list is beautiful!! 😍😍 how dare you!!!
These guys at Hollywood are nuts !!!! So many gorgeous women !!! What is wrong with you Hollywood ???
This barely scratches the surface as to why I loathe Hollywood.
Wait wait wait........Kate Winslet, Winona Ryder, Lady Gaga & Lupitia Neongo.......my fav. talented were rejected.
I loved the movie, Lucas!!! I saw it in the theater like 4 times... lmfaoooooo! I remember going to see Heathers in the theater. It was a pre-screening with the director. It was a pretty neat experience.
Looks don't matter, they're all unique and gorgeous in a way
And I’ve been told I look like a mix of Kat Dennings and Kate Winslet 🥰 I love them both
"Coventionally beautiul" - that is one of the most insulting expressions I've ever heard - "not pretty enough" - I think I'm sick of the word "enough".
I agree! Ya know, my mom used to use that term a LOT when I was growing up. Always hated it.
Or the other one: "Well, considering (insert not nice word) It's not so bad". It was always elongated too, like, consiiiiidering.
To me, telling a woman they're not pretty enough sounds very cruel.
This also demonstrates how toxic the politics in Hollywood are.
I agree, the entertainment industry can be incredibly shallow and fickle when it comes to beauty standards.
Telling any person he/she is ugly is pretty cruel, not only a woman.
Dimi Drug True but for a woman it’s worse, considering how much society values a woman only if she is pretty and young.
They Made Us Realize Even If Someone Says You Don't have It Don't Quit
✌Respect ✌
I watched this list to boost my confidence. Because seeing how many beautiful people, like ridiculously pretty people have been called ugly makes me angry but also think. We see ourselfes so much worse than we actually are.
That's not true. I know people who consider themselves beautiful/handsome, but are not.
@@dimidrugg9592 Well then it's their attitude. With a friendly smile on their lips they would probably look very different and pretty. Or it's just your subjective opinion? I, for example, don't recall ever thinking of a person as terribly ugly. But sure, some are more gorgeous or interesting to me. And i sometimes think of a person not as pretty as everybody else thinks. But mostly i realized i just didn't like their fake personality
@@dimidrugg9592 oh and also i obviously didn't mean everybody. Of course there are differences. I just meant there are a lot of very beautiful humans with low self-esteem. :)
@@dimidrugg9592 i agree. Every person has beautiful features that another one doesn't have
I think extraordinary noses are always beautiful because they make the face look so much more interesting.
I think all of them are actually pretty. Just cause they don't look like the typical face, doesn't mean they're ugly. Differences makes people unique
Jack James yeah
here to save you some time:))
10- kate winslet
9- pink
8- kat dennings
7- nia vardalos
6- mindy kaling
5- viola davis
4- winona ryder
3- lady gaga
2- barbra streisand
1- meryl streep
Kat Dennings is so pretty. She got nice full lips.
@Andy Salter LOL! I agree.
Elaine Snow “Why is it only the women have to be pretty?”
Because Hollywood is run by old white MEN!
Beethoven’s Fidelio so very true!
This gives me a bit more confidence to press forward because I feel like I would get similar commentary in pursuit of my dreams.
They're all gorgeous! They let their inside nature show on the outside and it lit them from within.
Besides, why would you want them to all look "a certain way"? Then you could never tell one actress apart from another. Our differences make us beautiful. Life would be boring if we all looked the same.
Hey @MsMojo , you should do top 10 WWE Women, past, present, and future. Don't forget AJ Lee
Who in their right mind thinks Meryl Streep is not GORGEOUS?! She is so beautiful
Sara Crumpler Dino De Laurentiis (the producer of the King Kong remake)
@@beethovensfidelio clearly not in their right mind though
My best friend is from Congo and has had people tell her because her skin is so dark she's ugly. I can't understand that. She's fucking gorgeous, as is Viola Davis. And if beauty wasn't enough, Viola Davis has an amazing energy about her, she just looks powerful.
Nay Flones You probably don’t understand because you’re white.
My mother used to always say "Beautiful is vanilla."
Wynona n Kate Winslet..oh come on Hollywood..they r both gorgeous!!!
Meryl Streep is gorgeous wth...
Lady Gaga's nose is beautiful! I hope she doesn't attempt to "fix" it. As far as her looks go, she's adorable. I had no idea how she looked without the costumes and garish make-up.
Viola Davis is my most favored actress. Screw you who puts her value into her looks (dark skin) She’s amazing. I watch everything that she touches
Pretty is always subjective (although all of the mentioned celebrities are fucking gorgeous) but none of that matters when you got the TALENT. Gotta have them singing/acting *CHOPS*
Edit: OH SHIT I FORGOT MINDY WAS A FUCKING WRITER FOR THE OFFICE TOO LIKE DAMN THAT SHOW IS FLAWLESS
Edit Part 2: Thank fuck Barbra didn’t get a nose job because she looks great and HER VOICE WOULD HAVE BEEN FUCKED AND LOSING SOMEONE THAT FANTASTIC ON BROADWAY AND OFF WOULD HAVE CUT DEEP
I actually enjoy P¡nk's music. That rebel sound was AWESOME!!!
I love Pink too.
Pretty is superficial, beauty is much more. It includes how a person looks, moves, acts...
For me Viola Davis was the most beautiful of this group.
Mindy Kaling graduated from college. She didn't leave college. We were in the same class.
Meryl Streep and also Glenn Close are great actors who dont fulfil the image of a beautiful breathtaking Hollywood Star and that is okay, because they are both GREAT actors beyond compare!
I'm as dark as Viola Davis and IDGAF if haters talk about me or if guys ignore me because they don't run my life .
I can relate to the big feet. I have them too...
You missed one.
*Barbara Eden* was told by the movie studio that she was just "ok" in the looks department.
Can you imagine someone telling our favorite Jeannie she's not that pretty? Insane... 🍾
