Because NAMM is vidcon. The medium has become the goal.
Not a stab at people that use social media youtube etc, but i get the feeling that music , expression and innovation have been replaced with people basically playing the piano on a fretboard. Reminds me of the skateboarding scene when it became a strange paint-by-numbers-olympic-dance-sport thing. No fun. Thats my half baked haven’t-had-coffee-yet “hot take”. Vidcon.

I dont know, maybe i am jaded because i just watched a video of the Ibanez booth where they basically became musicman. There is a strange thirst to cater to something that doesn’t exist ? I love people sharing skills, music and opinions on youtube. I love your channel. I love it when they become huuuuuuuge. But there is a hollow emptiness hovering somehow. I mean your channel really helped me, and even when i did not know what a “chapman” is i saw a dude with dreads making his own instruments and i was like “yeah, go get it rah!” We need some “rock” and youtube is keeping it alive in the popular mind. Buuuttttt it also feels like an “E! Behind the music” is about to happen. “WHEN RUclipsRS USED TO RULE THE WORLD”. Blah. Rant. Gonna get coffee. Your channel is vital and crucial and. I DO want to snag one of your pickups because i want to be part of this music diy selfpublish wave.

Haha, umm no, those guys are glorified guitar salesmen. If rock isn't dead, it's definitely on life support. Just look at the Grammy's last night. The only rock bands featured were either fossils, or it was Gary Clark Jr's terrible rock song. They even had Ozzy come up to give away the Grammy for best Rap/sung performance. I was like, wow they couldn't have him do the metal performance, or even the rock performance category? Yeah, Indy and country are huge right now, and they were basically non existent last night with the exception of a few fossils. But RUclipsrs are going to save us with their 10 minute commercials for gear or "10 things djent guitarists do" videos, or Scandinavian Satanic progressive porno grind on a banjo videos.

I think it's clear from watching Rob over the years and watching all this fallout that Rob transposed from being a guy who felt like he was lucky to be there to a guy who felt you should feel lucky that he's there. In the beginning when Rob first met Joe from Riff City at NAMM he was over the moon that Riff City was on board and as Rob was desperate to get retailers in the US to carry his guitars. A few other small retailers came on board as well but Riff City was different, Joe appeared to be fully invested. I think Rob was able to take advantage Joe's commitment. In some ways Rob reminds me of a high priced attorney, after a few years of billing $500 for even the simplest and smallest tasks you begin to get used to the idea that your time is highly valuable and what would seem like a simple, common task that you wouldn't think of charging for now is billed by the minute. Ultimately the problem that Rob is facing is he built his channel, brand, and company on his personality and appeal, which now has seen it's stock plummet. I'm interested to see how this continues to unfold and will check back with your channel and others in the future for any updates. Peace out.

Yep it sucks for Riff City. Good speculation there. Honestly I think Chappers will bounce back stronger and his channel will grow after a short term downturn. It doesn't mean that you can't or shouldn't morally criticise individuals (and here I wouldn't defend Chapman), but their business decisions are seldom a particularly telling expression of their moral characters. It's so funny how guys like Chapman think they are the future of guitar when in reality they're the ones killing it. What made those musicians of the past relevant was the fact that they were out there gigging, playing for real people making an impact in society, not making content for the nerd bedroom guitar community. And they did it by making exciting and daring music associated with great attitude and charisma. When i first saw Jimmy Page playing those loud cool riffs, sweating on stage with his low hanging Les Paul to a mesmerized audience, i though that was the coolest thing ever and it made me dream of being like that one day, and i'm still dreaming at age 41. Chapman is nothing like that, he's just a nerd, middle aged, slightly overweight bloke sitting down doing gear demos, there's nothing inspiring there. Even when i saw him play live with his bands the same discripion aplies, the only diference is him standing up. Don't get me wrong, i've seen many of Chapman's videos but only for informative reasons, never for the music or his charisma (actually i think Captain Lee is a lot more charismatic without even trying) . Sorry for the big rant but i too miss the days when music was exicting and relevant, and yes there are many great bands right now but they're not the nerdy lame bedroom youtube guitarists. The good bands are the ones still traveling around in shity vans, playing to half empty rooms for a couple of beers and gas money, strugling to survive totatly ignored by the "guitar comunity". Cheers man, keep fighting the vanilla sausage and calling out the bulshit.

I think guitar forums had a huge impact on the vanilla sausage aspect too. That's where the sm57 vintage 30 addiction really started doing the rounds. Mids mids mids rules etc etc. We need songwriting and swagger to come back to the guitar scene. Tone chasing and gear worship did a number on me but I want to learn from my mistakes.

Just do u. Dont give a crap about whats going on for other guys sure u can chime in like oh thats kewl but u have to ask urself are u dedicating urself to ur music or their music. Idolism in music especially for musicians is a major pitfall for them. U begin to find urself not even working towards ur own dreams and agendas. Other people/musicians will take advantage of ur inabibility to differentiate between what u want/need to do and their own agendas. U will find urself never fully accomplishing what u set out to accomplish. Most go into it with a clear goal but over time because of peoples influence in their lives by either indirect and/or direct means begins to rattle u down. Ur initial interests become warped to the point where u forget what u were truly interested in and what made it worthwhile. Its ok to collab but u have to draw the line when its no longer 50/50 even when ur not the one being taken advantage of if u see urself beginning to get more out of it and u know that its wrong than u need to either find a way to keep it 50/50 or move on so u dont become someone who begins to let other people do the things u can do. Only u know what u want. I dont understand designating others to things u can already do unless ur in a band which in that case its even amonst the band mates and everyone suggests around parts doesnt just make strictly their own part standalone. Partnerships where the whole meaning behind the word team is totally skewed. There should never be someone acting as a manager or leader in a 2 way or how much ever way project where ur not a band or act and taking advantage of the others involved in a way to where u can take a backseat and relax is not right. Think about it long term u can use all the people u have made bridges with until no one wants to be used by u anymore and those bridges collapse under u, or u can be used by almost everyone forever ignorant to it all and never able to go up in life with ur music. Some of the best ways are to push ur way in with no regard for the situation. Sieze the chaos and use ur music to trample the world. If u love ur music and i mean ur own music gives u that feeling(u know that feeling). Than others will feel it even more so. U dont need to do anything besides what u know is truly right inside ur heart as a musician. That should be the sharpest thing that pierces past all the meaninglessness that believing in false words from people who think they know u and have labled what ur capbable of as never changing or reaching the place they put as ur cieling. All u need to do is go higher. Phase those people out if u had a past relationship and u know they are bad news because if ur gunning for the biggest catch u can make in life than those are people who should get a bite. This platform is mixed in good and bad. For me when it comes to music especially guitar it feels like most everyone ive subbed to has just been a time killer. Ive found really unique channels where i ca listen to them but a majority of the ones i originally subbed to became less and less important. Music isnt dead. Rock isnt dead. Metal is by no ways by any means dead. But people are not taking it seriously. Its a huge mix uve got more commercial sounding metal and uve got some really technical/simple metal that cuts through it. It depends on what side of the coin are u for, Rock and Music too. U cant kill something that was never dead to begin with as long as Music exists and sound Metal will be here Rock will be here. Whether its popular depend on the effect of time and who comes forth to make big on keeping it in sight for many of the people who found the scene by unconventional means. Id never be playing heavier music if it werent for people saying check this out. In High School i was strictly Jazz/Blues/Rock. Finding Metal was a major game changer. It introduced me to more creative ways to play guitar and i stopped tuning my guitar to just standard or drop or open tunings. Theres a metal gig happening near my place, Motionless In White and Beartooth. Im gunna def. check it out. I support dudes who tour constantly.

Chapman has simply taken a small amount of media popularity, YT subscribers, he’s sold a small number of guitars, their figures aren’t threatening the big suppliers, he’s stretched all of that as far as possible and then started to believe his own hype. None of it was built on solid foundations, none of it was guaranteed. He made some ill judged public statements, he over stated his position, he ended up having a trial by social media and he was found wanting.
A shame, he could’ve been a positive influence, he could’ve collaborated widely with artists and content makers, instead he’s pissed it all away by letting his ego loose. I don’t think he’ll retain his subs, he has been sidelined by Andertons, they are now stronger without him.
He was never going to be the next fire and brimstone character, he’s simply not that influential.

Maybe Rob has an ego, like 100's of millions of other people, maybe he's just trying to portray a positivity to what you can achieve with hard work. @@mottosierra1372 I wouldn't say they're shit. I mean, I can't give an exhaustive review of the range, but I own an ML-2 standard and... it's absolutely worth the £350 I paid for it (sale price, yay).
That said, in the main, it's the manufacturer who deserves the credit for that, because they're actually building the damn things. Is it the best guitar I own? No. It Chappers a knob? Seems that way.

@@mottosierra1372 Well, a lot is subjective, that's true. I understand not wanting to take a punt on one without trying it out first - until 2018(I think), Andertns was the closest Chapman dealer to me, and that's like an 8 hour drive to get there.
On the points where you can be objective about a guitar - tuning stability and so on - I think it's on a par with similarly priced LTDs, Schecters and the like. Which are, so far as I'm aware, being made in the same factory anyway. And also good for the money.
It is, all things considered, a great time to be a guitarist on a budget.

First time seeing a video of yours, to my recollect. But I enjoy that your saying what’s on your mind, and that you are humble about some stuff. The only thing I didn’t like was the edited cuts of Chapman’s video. Taking some of that out of context(whilst I know that video was a little wild) makes it look worse than what he was explaining at the time. But there’s nothing wrong with people getting checked and then also standing up for themselves. RUclips isn’t just a past time. It’s peoples full time job. Sometimes you have to stand up for that shit too. Sometimes you make mistakes and need to be called out for em.

I actually bought a ML Pro Modern lunar, because I liked how it sounded being played by Rabea.
That guitar was one of the shittiest wastes of wood I ever purchased.

I checked out the ML1 Pro(strat-style)at a local music shop. It was a lifeless and unexciting dust-collector. I've come across as a decent amount of Korean and Indonesian-made guitars that had way more personality than a Chapman. Sorry you had to buy it to find out the hard way, but you live and learn!

Exactly what I’ve been saying. He could’ve kept Riff City in the loop. I’m no fan of Rob or Joe. I noticed an issue way back 2 yrs ago at namm when I saw Rob sitting outside of namm with his cronies. Joe walked by and Rob yelled hi Joe and Joe said hi and kept walking. Typically, Joe would have his face in that camera thinking he was a celebrity. They’re not celebrities. Imo. But I knew there was an issue with their relationship.

One drummer I play with sometimes is also a wrestling promoter.
A bit of Kayfabe can be entertaining in the live music world just like wrestling.
I've long suspected some of it goes on with youtube guys as well.
