    I've been recording in Sunlight several times (yep used the peavey for some over dubs of feedback) and that guitar tone you get there is something else. It is not just not about the gear, the mike, it is also about the relaxed situation and the discussions about Music, politics, way of living that appear in the result. Sunlight....

      Funny you should say that LG could replace Max. I have never thought about that really, but both of them is on my list of favorite metal vocalists. I like that they have more like harsh and agressive singing compared to like Deathcore vocals, it's more raw and sound less controlled than what it probably is.
      Others on my list is Phil Anselmo from Pantera (and 9000 other bands...), and Corey Taylor from Slipknot. They also have that agressive and just very harsh style of singing, that style is my favorite! 🤘

    I like the comment about LG "There's something wrong with that man. He's a beast". Totally agree. Have seen him live a few times and his voice is just massive. He's quite a small guy in stature, but just has a massive voice. The best thing is you can understand the lyrics he's singing too, which is unusual for such a heavy band. I love that man's voice

    My Bandit 112 red stripe is a very underrated metal machine. It’s not hard to dial in a great tone for thrash metal. I never use the clean channel. I put a tube screamer in front to tighten up the palm mutes. I have a Seymour Duncan SH-10 in the bridge as well. Which is a treble heavy pickup.
    You can get a fairly warm tone for a solid state if you want. Also the secret is back off the gain. You need less than you think. And yes, it sits well in a mix.

    Entombed's opus to me was 'To Ride, Shoot Straight And Speak The Truth'. First album I heard, bashed it, and everything else ended up being lesser to me. If you're looking for the tone from that album, and you have Amplitube, try this:
    HM2 with all dials maxed.
    Slash Gate - Dial at 1 O'Clock, Switch to FULL
    Amplitube Compressor Pedal - both dials around 12 O'Clock
    Mesa Dual Rectifier - Clean Channel
    Presence / Master / Gain at 12 O'Clock
    Bass - 1 O'Clock
    Mid - 9 O'Clock
    Treble - 2 O'Clock
    I haven't even started on tweaking the cabinet and mics.. and it's really close. Lots of room to dial in if you can hear differences and want to go further into tweaking. So fucking heavy. The Slash Gate really controls that fucking HM-2.. it's a great pedal.

      I know your heart and passion lies with extreme and old school metal, but maybe if you took a look at more contemporary metal/hard rock bands I think you could reach a wider audience. The "Sound like [Band X]" on Andertons get a ton of views, and you are basically the deep and detailed version of that. Maybe you can also work with modern manufacturers and push their gear. There's no shame in commercialization if it keeps you afloat and supports you.

    • @lordgraga
      @lordgraga 6 лет назад +6

      For example, your COT100 amp sounds awesome, but that's custom made right? You could get in touch with an amp manufacturer (let's say Victory) and use their gear instead. Besides getting a free amp-head, you could work a small deal for £X for each video you name drop the gear in. More importantly, when people search for that gear, your videos will pop up, leading to more organic traffic.

    • @lordgraga
      @lordgraga 6 лет назад +3

      Another: You insist on being 100% authentic to the gear they use as much of the time, but you *COULD* compare modern digital offerings to "the real deal". Ola Englund and Spectre Sound Studios does something like this some times.

    • @turaly0n
      @turaly0n 6 лет назад +2

      I think once you release the tonewood videos, you should see an increase in views/subs. I think that hits a wider audience than extreme metal. Also, more stuff like that Robert Johnson video. that was awesome.
      Also, should talk to the tone king. He's a nice guy that loves distortion.

    I think the trick to the Peavey Bandit is to run it as a clean platform and then run distrotrion pedals through it, even better if you stack 2 overdrive together like a RAT with a TS style pedal (set both at lower gains as the grit of the 2 together add up in the end). Maybe it doesn't sound good with the HM2? Or maybe try boosting the HM2 with something else before it. Great video btw!

    I love Entombed but for me, the best Swedish Death Metal guitar tone was undeniably on the album Into The Grave by Grave. They neither used the HM-2 nor a Marshall amp.
    They used a method that was generally used by some Death/Doom bands. They cranked up a channel jumped Fender Bassman head (all knobs at ten) plugged into a full stack of Marshall 4x12" cabs loaded with Greenbacks to make the amp go into a natural preamp and power amp overdrive, and push the speakers into break-up. Then they dirty boosted it further with a Boss DS-1.
    It was indeed a freakishly loud way of achieving the buzzsaw guitar tone, but as an advantage, their buzzsaw guitar tone was way sludgier, thicker, and heavier than other Swedish Death Metal bands. It'll be pretty crazy to recreate the Into The Grave set-up nowadays though because it'll be impractically loud.
    By the way, this is how a cranked up channel jumped Fender Bassman head sounds through Greenbacks without any pedals before it. When dirty boosted further by Boss DS-1 it produces the guitar tone heard on the Into The Grave album.

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE
      @CIRCLEOFTONE  6 лет назад

      Torment Yt yep. It’s easy though. Zero mixing/plugins/vst eq etc on guitars/bass. left right for guitars and bass down the middle. I make sure I get it right at the mic so I don’t have to mix. So if something lacks a frequency instead of looking for a VST parametric eq I reach for a mic that can hear that freq or move mics until I get it. I don’t even use a mastering plugin. EDIT: I do use a tape simulator VST now and then for the bands who went to tape. Nothing special though, it was the one that comes with Sonar platinum.
      Drums are ezdrummer 2 with about 7 additional kits that I mix n match.
      On vocals I used isotope nectar and breverb plus devillok.

    hello guy, always interesting your vids, good job. i've red a few years ago that "left hand path" was recorded with a peavey studio pro, an hm2 and a sd1 (2 tracks with hm2 and 1 with sd1). you can try to buy a bandit but not sure it will change anything.i've tried since many years the HM2 on several amps (tubes and not) and on each time, the HM2 sound taking overall each amp, no matter amp you choose, the HM2 is there.

    I was lucky to get an hm2 back in about '88 as my first and only pedal, had no idea how it compared with other pedals but it was named heavy metal so that was all I needed to know to choose it. Always played it with bass and gain maxxed and treble around 2/3 to 3/4 into a marshall with bass and treble maxxed and mid at zero. It was as close to the Bolt Thrower sound as I could get with what I had (no idea what my guitar was though, black with 'Celebrity' on the headstock). Not changed the settings on the HM2 in 30 years :D

    Great video, as always. I really enjoy this series. If I may utter a request, though... Would love to see a vid like this on Rammstein. Their guitar tone is unreal, especially on the older stuff and I don't know how they did it. Been trying to nail that tone for years, with moderate success at best. I believe, the secret is mostly - but not only - EQ and compression. Can't get it right, though.
    A video on this would make me so happy, but any pointer would be welcome. Anyone know anything? Some secret trick or equipment that they used? Thanks.

    Just a thought for future vids: I'm interested to know what tonal difference the ohm rating of a cab makes to the sound. I have a JCM900, OR120 and a Carlsbro valve head all of which are capable of 4, 8 or 16 ohm cabs... but what gives the best tone. I have always used 16 ohm cabs as someone once told me that was best for a highly driven guitar sound... but I'm sure you could make a great video explaining it all!

    By JCM800 do you mean a 2203? Does the COT-100 have the same amount of gain

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE
      @CIRCLEOFTONE  6 лет назад +3

      It’s not dead on. It’s a different circuit but voiced similar with the same level of gain. It’s a base for boosts. It’s hand-wired point to-point with solid copper core wiring and a pure to jack to preserve freqs. Plus it has a depth knob and a loop unlike a 2203. So put a TS9, RAT, distortion pedal etc to slam the front end and it’s like being kicked in the chest BUT has sweet tonality. Loads of character.
