TWO Months with the M1 Macbook Air: A Long Term Review
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 июн 2024
- This is the M1 Macbook Air. One of Apple’s computers to use the new M1 Apple Silicon processor. It looks nearly identical to the Macbook air from early 2020. But the similarities are only skin deep. So, the question today is, should you spend your hard earned money on the first generation Apple Silicon macs? Here are my thoughts on these new M1 Macs. Let’s get started with a little review.

10:35 Conclusion
Now let’s talk about usage. The webcam is still 720p but the colors and details look a little better than before thanks to the image processing of the new M1 that it adopted from the iphone and ipads, it’s not a drastic difference though. The mic I would say is okay. But because the macbook air is fan-less you will never hear the blaring of your laptops fans whirling up into maximum overdrive. The screen gets nice and bright. The keyboard no longer has the keyboard backlight controls on the function buttons and if you want to adjust the backlight, you’ll now have to open the quick settings panel by pressing this little sideways nintendo switch looking logo on the top right corner. As a previous owner of a 2016 Macbook pro with similar design, I’d be careful of the following things. 1. TSA, 2. Bracelets or watches. If you’re considering these macbooks, just know while these machines are built really well, with very little flexing on their bodies, they’re not prone to scratching or denting, which some people may love or hate. Now let’s talk about performance. The only times I managed to get it to thermal throttle or get hot is when I export a 4K youtube video kind of like the one you’re watching right now. That usually happens around 8-10 minutes into the export and performance drops. But in everyday usage, like web browsing, photo editing, and even video editing before exporting. It’s only warm. It’s only in those long sustained 100% cpu and gpu usage situations that it ever gets hot or throttles the performance. If you were looking at this for school work, or general computing, then I think you’d rarely throttle it. There’s also the fact that you can download iphone and ipad apps onto the M1 Macs now. Having support for these apps are cool, and I’m sure some of them are useful but because Macs in general don’t have touch screen displays, it makes it super difficult to use iOS apps that were made with touch in mind.
When a company makes a significant change to their product and how it works, and at the same time tries to maintain the same level of features, there has to be some issues right? This isn’t an extensive list, but just issues I’ve personally encountered. I’ve experienced the laptop crashing completely when downloading iphone and ipad apps that restarted the computer by itself. When I had the M1 Macbook pro, there was a large black spot that appeared in the bottom center right of the screen. It only went away if I restarted the laptop. I’ve had Final cut pro, cut the audio randomly while I’m editing. The only way to fix it is to either just wait a few minutes, or close FCP and re-open it. I’ve had issues with the trackpad going fully unresponsive, with the only way to fix it was to restart it. I’m sure with time these issues will be fixed, but it’s also fair to say, these issues exist right now, so as a buyer you should know about them. But luckily those seem to be all software issues that can be fixed over time. - Наука
Windows person here. Recently bought my first Mac, an M1 Air - very impressive machine!
Same
Indeed!
Why do you say it is more impressive?
@@melissamikaelson9650 Well, I didn’t say more impressive than anything per se, just that it’s very impressive (for me as a Windows guy) in terms of performance, battery life, and overall user experience.
@@namakudamono can you give any examples? I may consider switching from windows because I’m kind of unhappy with battery performance. I’ve gotten several laptops this year, a mix of windows and apple, all the battery lasted only a few hours. My current laptop lasts about 3 hours before running out of battery, and so do other windows laptops. I got a MacBook earlier this year and the battery ran out even faster, but someone told me you had to let it completely die and complete a charging cycle and the battery would last longer. Though I hadn’t tried that I just returned it.

I really like this video. Great editing and good audio! I would have a small suggestion - it's a minor thing but use a deflicker as the flickering takes away from the awesome b-roll. Also I had the impression that sometimes the video is laggy and it's not because of my internet connection, for example 4;02 - 4;08 is a bit choppy, but again, awesome work in general!
This video helped me make the decision to buy this PC!!
Also, I really appreciate your editing on this video - must have taken forever!!

I'm 100% a windows guy and still am, but can't deny how good these are. Got my wife one
Never thought I’d say I’m getting a Mac but I’m going in to get one tomorrow. Got my desktop for windows and being in tech/development Macs have some perks that are nice to have. Always liked them but their hardware was always somewhat lacking and never felt worth the price until now.

@Kiel Enrique hahaha
@@Shorty9856 For me, switching to Mac was a bit of a pain. for starters my courses in college were mainly windows based, not a lot of support for Mac, and what was on Mac was not the best. However programming isn't so bad on Mac, the screen size is to small though, overall I have mixed feelings, but I will say its not so bad. I may get the 16 inch and go with a windows desktop best of both worlds.
And thank you so much for making this video it made my decision a little bit easier. I love the amount of detail you went into and I believe you're the first one I've seen to explain what happens when older apps are converted. I didn't know there was a bouncing delay. Thanks again

Good review good realistic scenarios. Had my MacBook Air with 16 gigs now for two weeks, there's a few apps that have some problems with it, there's a few funky scenarios, but overall it's fabulous. Awesome review man. Summarized everything you need to know in a good concise way 👍
Ahhh thank you so much!! I’m considering getting the air & your vid helped a lot :)
Informative and great content 👍
Great video! I had both a Pro and an Air. I lean on internal speakers a lot more than most. I don't like to have airpods in when I'm working or just chilling. I ended up keeping the Pro because of that. It cost a little more, but I had also upgraded it to 16 Gig of RAM. I had an issue with it and was going to return it, but it ended up being a software bug. I had bought the air to replace it. Like you, it is super impressive. I wouldn't have been able to keep it longterm with those tinny speakers. However, if you don't use internal speakers, the air is a no brainer.
Good tip. Thanks.
I love my M1 Macbook Air, I had the previous Macbook Air with the Intel i5 and the performance improvements are well worth the update. Video editing in iMovie (about to try FCPX) is amazingly smooth and rendering is fast. I would highly recommend. I only have the 8GB version with 256GB of internal storage and love it.

I, a Windows user (although I have had time to extensively use macOS Mojave as I did have an old Mac), bought the M1 Air and it's been amazing so far! The battery life (even better with Low Power Mode on Monterey) and performance is great.
I'd recommend waiting for the new refreshes of the Air and the Pro as they'd be slightly better than 2020's but if you need one right now, go for it!
The only thing I miss is some game compatibility, specifically Valorant & Monster Hunter World but idm them that much. Minecraft runs at twice the speed of my old 2009 Mac Pro with no fans at all. Pretty impressive stuff.
Great and incredibly thorough review! I wanted to update my mid-2012 MacBook Pro and decided on the M1 MacBook Air.

Hi, would a casual use such as converting videos formats from avi to mp4, long hour video lectures or zoom calls, browsing the web and office be enough to thermal throttle this?
@@samuel99813 I am a Highschool student and I will be using this for my online classes between 9am-4pm and as far as I know you can use it for long hour video lectures etc. but i haven’t really tried converting video formats from avi to mp4. Great analysis. Thank you for this video.
Great video. I ended up selling my Mac mini that I hardly used anymore and got the MBP M1 16gb ram and 1tb for 2/3 of what I sold the Mac mini 2018. This machine is so worth it if you have an intel Mac that is a couple years old as the Intel Macs have not yet started to depreciate too much and if you wait there is a really good chance that your 13 inch fully loaded 2019 or 2018 Mac will lose most if not all of its value. I got the Pro for the fan even though I have yet to hear it when I am editing hours of footage. Its more of a peace of mind. Also I don't know why people hate the Touch Bar, have they used it with Final Cut Pro or customized it? its like an addition of keyboard shortcuts and makes so much sense when typing. I hope this helps anyone who is on the verge of choosing which M1 is for them.
you really showing off that ring in the intro 👀
*PS5 remote lmao
That ring tho
Ended up returning my base model M1 MBP for an Air with 512GB SSD and 16 GB RAM because they cost about the same. I rarely ever need 100% CPU performance for more than 2-3 minutes and for the week I’ve had my Pro, the only time I could get the fans to turn on was during Cinebench. Air is the best value for sure given the excellent thermal performance of M1
Great review!
I’ve had the same audio issue with FCPX!
How is this thing real, the performance to price ratio is not like Apple at all. What is going on...
World was ending so apple decided to do something for good
watch the reviews on the SSD'S IN 6-12 months. Apparently it writes a RIDICULOUS amount of data and can potentially cause the SSD to need replacing... this said i have the 2020 intel based macbook air and it's a REALLY good machine.
@@tweedle634 uhhh no
Probably cheaper to make because they have similar processors to iPhones and iPads.
Some of the “Apple tax” is actually an Intel tax. They take a big cut and will only reduce it if the manufacturer puts Intel stickers on the machine. Apple refuses, so they pay full price minus whatever volume discount
Getting the laptop this Friday I’m so excited!!!!
I have ordered today MacBook Air 512ssd gb, 8gb of ram, 8cpu and 8 gpu...

Haw is your macbook air still doing well?
I just compared similarly priced PC laptops and I must say the M1 Macbook Air is a great deal.
@@j.d6009 Not true.
@@j.d6009 well, I just said that there are better options. I wasn't clear, sorry.
The Base Option is a great option (8 GB 256 GB), there isn't any laptop at 999$ that can beat it! The only problem is the software compatibility (not that big of an issue, You have Rosetta for Emulations) and if you want to use Windows, you need to buy a license for 100$ (Parallels).
There is the G14, which costs less while being similarly equipped. It got more performance and more software compatibility. The battery isn't the best, that is for sure.
You might say 8 GB are enough, well yes but actually no. As everyone knows, The Mac uses a technique called Swapping (it's actually on every OS). It saves the stuff in the RAM, when not needed, onto the SSD. This shortens the lifespan of your SSD.
On most Windows Machines, you can yourself just change the SSD. But on Apple, you can change nothing. Everything is soldered.
I would actually wait. Many people have said that Zen 3 U-Series from AMD is better than the M1. Laptops with it are slowly coming onto the market.
Definitely one of the more professional and informative videos I’ve come across so far! Thanks for this! Thank you for the plain English non technical review. It was helpful. I’m looking for a replacement for my outdated 2010 Dell Inspiron 17 inch screen. I’m considering a MacBook because my wife has an older model MacBook Pro (that she rarely uses) and she and I have Apple iPhones and iPads.
