M1 MacBook Pro and Air review: Apple delivers

- Опубликовано: 8 авг 2024
- Apple has updated three Mac with its own M1 processors: the Macbook Air, the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, and the Mac mini. Will Intel-based apps run? Will they be fast? Will they live up to Apple's battery life claims? Nilay Patel and Dieter Bohn have a thousand questions, and almost all of them have been answered.

Selling a few old lenses to Adorama as we speak towards a M1 MacBook Pro.. We shall see...
Nope. Gen1 is a big no for me. M2, though? Sure.
I don’t think people actually understand how “RIDICULOUS“ this actually is..
a x86 app running with translated software and performing better than in a native system is !CRAZY! 🤯
Yeah this is really impressive stuff!
Exactly. This should be talkd about more. It's just ridiculous that non-native transpiled apps are performing better than they perform on x86 chips.
And that is how apple beats microsoft on arm chip race... this first gen arm chip already blew everything away unlike what happened to Surface Pro X last year
The only crazy thing here is that 720p camera 😂
@@USNEM Google used the same camera in the Pixel for 4 years... and just updated it with software... no reason to think that Apple can't do some of that here...
What is crazy is that this is the weakest chip Apple will ever make for a laptop. Next year’s 16 inch MacBook Pro is going to be a BEAST.
@Chrono they’re not gonna make a less powerful chip in a more expensive computer
@Chrono we all know that already.
My thoughts exactly, this is fantastic
I don’t think that 16 inch MacBook will be much difference
Maybe a m1x and ofc that 16 inch screen

Adding a touchscreen would add 9,999 premium to the price. They just making a breakthrough charging the same for m1 from intel. So why would they want to rush everything? Adding another trillion annually is what they do.
These solved almost every problems of arm chips in computers

None of us knew Intel has been ripping off humanity this badly until today
You must be referring to mostly Mac users because it’s been an ongoing battle in the tech community for a while. Pretty much everyone knows.
Imagine what apple will do lol
@@theartshow1476 yeah you are probably right, I thought the latest intel mac was the best they could do lol silly me.
@@theartshow1476 Nah, Mac users experienced it too when Intel didn‘t hold their huge promises on power efficient 10nm chips in 2016, which were supposed to be used for the 12“ fan-less MacBook. It was partly Intel‘s fault that the 12“ MacBook had to be discontinued. And now 4 years later Intel is still trying to deliver on those „efficient“ 10nm chips.
*Edit: admittedly, Intel‘s new 11th CPU is quite good and competes with TSMCs 7nm node. But a little too late to be taken seriously at that point. And whether that decent quad core CPU is even scalable remains to be seen. It‘ll have to if they want to have any chance in keeping up with AMD and Apple.
AMD has been demolishing Intel the last couple years too, especially with the most recently released Ryzen chips. It's like Intel isn't even trying any more. The company a shadow of its former self.
The script of this video, the direction, the editing, the music and of course the review itself can all be summarized with one word: "PRICELESS!". In my opinion, this video outshines almost every other past Verge video. To all the people who put this video together, keep it up! And, thanks.
Yeah the laptops are all nice and dandy but can we take a moment to appreciate how well made this video is? Y’all at The Verge need a raise.
What about adobe softwares we already own ? Will it run on this M1 MacBooks
Apple Silicon in Mac's looks really promising! This change could be huge, not just for Apple, but the whole industry in the coming years.
They're still grossly inferior to AMD's Zen 3 CPUs though, so no, not at all. The Verge are just known Apple fanboys.
@@xOogieBoogie3x AMD doesn't have Zen 3 laptop CPUs...
@@xOogieBoogie3x They should be worse than ZEN 3, if it weren’t, the M1 chip would be insane. Keep in mind that it will be the lowest end Apple Silicon chip for Mac’s so. Still tho, it got a more powerful single-core or at least it matches the single-core scores of ZEN 3 and this is while using 1/5 of the wattage. Apple are off to a very good start with Apple Silicon, now we just need to wait and see if they can scale it up to compete with AMD in desktop as well. If you don’t think the M1 chip is looking impressive than I don’t know what kind of insane performance gains you are expecting.

Steve Jobs died 9 years ago, but it's only today that I am convinced that Apple could live without him. They really can innovate.
I was convinced when they launched the iWatch and AirPods. Hopefully this leadership will continue into the future. Apple can best be described in two words: Innovative ecosystem
I agree
The move to its own processor is part of Jobs's plan in 2008 just a year after the launch of iPhone. Not only that, he predicted the move before he rejoined Apple
But they haven't, they even went with Steve jobs iphone design lol
@@The-Heart-Will-Testify Which was a rip of products from another company. Steve wasn’t magic. He just knew what he liked (and that’s probably the biggest understatement here).
This is mind blowing. Looking at how well ARM did on Windows, I didn’t have high hopes for Apple Silicon, and yet Apple has completely shattered my expectations.
Late comment but ARM never did well on Windows. Microsoft even stopped using ARM based chips on their Sufrace devices and started using Intel chips instead. Also they discontinued Windows 10X which never did run well on ARM based devices so not sure what do you mean by saying "Looking at how well ARM did on Windows" which never happened.

@@Shawn.Shooter you must be fun at parties.
Apple hardware engineers have done an amazing job. They got a lot of experience designing chips for the iPhone and now they applied it for the notebooks. Can't even wait for the second generation of these things.
I'm honestly so surprised that this went as well as it did. I wasn't expecting a dumpster fire or anything, but I was not really expecting much better than Intel based macs on non-native apps. Great job Apple. I have to say though, I had much higher hopes for the webcam after hearing about the better image processing. The main reason that webcams look so bad is the lack of a good strong ISP in normal computers. That truly is a dumpster fire.
That webcam problem is a hardware limitation. Excellent software and image processors can back up a below average hardware to a certain extent.
The problem isn't actually the hardware. It's the distance from the pcb. You see it with windows 2-in-1s. Their webcams are so much better than the laptops because the image data can be processed by the cpu directly. On laptops, the wired runs are via USB 2.0, which is terrible for latency and throughput.
I'm actually using the web cam, (I upgraded from a MacBook Pro i5) it's much better than on the previous Macs, these guys are lying basically, because unexpectedly they couldn't find any other faults with the M1!
Linus from linustechtips grumbles in the background about being sceptical...
@@jackdominiak445 it’s more about the fact that compared to almost every other laptop at similar price points you get a much better camera. It’s also the fact that more people are working at home and would expect a very good camera on a “Pro” machine rather than just an ok one. It’s apple being stingy again, as they are with reducing ports, and expensive r]RAM and storage upgrades. It’s right to call them out on this every single time rather than just accept it. Having said all that, these laptops and the apple mini are impressive, and I’m kind of tempted to get a Mac mini now. I see a lot of comments from windows users who are curious as well.
how do I get the content from my camera onto the macbook? I don't see a SD card tray

iOS apps being available on macOS could be huge for security and privacy. Banking for example. If I can use my banks iOS app on macOS, I don't have to go to their website in a web browser, where I could accidentally mistype the URL, or be subject to a browser exploit, man-in-the-middle or phishing attack etc.
Yeah but its not executed well, then not a great experience for the customer even if the alternative Is available.
@@RamMohammadJosephKaur I think it will be ok.

No. Most of the time you get "hacked", it's because you stupidly use stupid password, or put your password unencrypted digitally, or someone social engineers you, which is basically your fault.
See long story short. For a company like Apple, who charges such an exorbitant price for their products and services, they better be the best in class. That is expected from them. Nothing to be so geeked about.

Same here. Still rocking a mid 2014 pro. At the time it was a no brainer vs the Air, but now that I’m probably going to buy an M1, Air seems the way to go
Same here. Back in 2012 when I bought the retina Pro, the display of the Air alone was reason enough not to buy it. I’m gonna switch to an M1 Air now.
Air is the clear winner this round. Due to efficiency of the M1 chip, you get similar performance, similar battery life, and a similar screen for significantly cheaper. Based on what I’ve seen in this video, I don’t even see a need for the 2-port MacBook Pro to even exist. For example, Id much rather have the Air with 16GB of Unified memory for $1200, than pay $1300 for a base 2-port Pro. If you’re dead set on the Pro, it would definitely be worth it to wait for the upgraded AS chip with 4-ports and a higher performance ceiling.
